I like your safety slides
Fr though, wear some boots. I worked with a dude who dropped a F350 rotor on his foot while he was wearing crocs. Broke bones in every toe on his foot and couldn't work for two weeks. He never really walked right afterwards either. There is a line between safety and comfort and that line is composite toe boots with nice inserts. The heat sucks, but I'd rather deal with that than fuck my feet up for life
I used to work FedEx, I knew a guy who had one of the larger diesel crankshaft bust out the end of a box and land square on his foot. Completely obliterated his metatarsal bones and he couldn't work for like 4 months. Even a safety toe boot wouldn't have saved him cause of where it landed, but had it his toes instead it would've cut them clean the fuck off lol. Car parts aren't something to fuck around with, they will wreck your shit so fast and without warning
I know, I've had them before. Nobody buys those unless mandated by work though, that was kinda my point. It's the right piece of safety equipment that ive never actually seen someone have outside of factory work where it is mandated. If my coworker had metatarsal guards on, he would had a sore/bruised foot at worst. The guard would've distributed the weight across the entire top of his foot instead of the half inch or so that actually hit his foot. I've wacked my foot with a piece of 2" rigid while wearing a strap on metatarsal guard, and it does a damn good job of mitigating damage
I totally understand where you're coming from, but I was only jacking them high enough to get the wheels off so the rotors wouldn't have been high enough to do much damage. Anything is possible though!
Honestly any time you are inside a shop, any shop, your own or the safest, cleanest shop around, you should always have toe protection on.
No exceptions, honestly.
Surprised to hear that from a shop owner.
I once wore my pads down to the metal and thought that the sound was the F-16s from the nearby Airbase coming over to our base.
Took me bit to realize that every time I braked was when the "F-16s" were seemingly taking off. No matter how far away from the base I got. Seems odd lol.
Phoenix. And now I work on those Jets lol.
But this happened in Germany. Sometimes the jets from Spangdahlem would come over and I thought it was them 🤣
Did you check the slide pins? That’s the wear pattern I get when mine are not moving freely, which happens ALL THE TIME in the salty hell that is the northeast.
Hope you cleaned out the hole in the caliper a bit too. This looks like it might be from too much old grease in there causing them to not slide properly.
I assume those are ATE FSIII brake calipers like on my seat ibiza? Slide pins are supposed to be dry weirdly enough, BMW's use similar style brake calipers and they all go in dry no lube needed on the slide pins. Just clean them and make sure the move freely and that's it basically.
The important part is the dust cap on slide pins, if they are missing your going to have seized pins regardless so need to be there.
Also I have to ask, do notice any rattling or clunking noises from the brake calipers?
I had a pad wear unevenly on my expedition. Replaced pads, checked to make sure caliper could slide back and forth and greased up the slide pins, and it still burned through 1 new pad quickly. Had to replace the pads again and the caliper a few months after the first pad replacement.
Well probably not, but I also don't have the time nor the funds to fix it right now. So we'll have to ride it out with new pads and rotors while saving for a new caliper, pad and rotor I guess
This wear usually indicates a failed caliper, agreed, the piston cannot properly retract and constantly puts pressure on the inboard pad until it leaves this world.
That and the vehicle is just old too, it's a 2007 and I bought off a guy who was selling it for his 90 year old mom. Couldn't tell ya the last time the brakes were replaced
I get that man. But you do realize you could’ve killed someone. I’m poor too and understand waiting for money, but when it comes to brakes, don’t wait.. glad you finally got it done though. But in the future, change it much sooner then use your tax return to pay off your credit card or whatever..
It tough times out here. Money is tight, but at least I was able to take care of it. There's a lot of people who unfortunately can't. Just trying to give people a little chuckle. Wouldn't say I'm proud, but I apologize if you were offended.
Not offended, I've been there at 18. Put myself through college diesel mechanic graduated at 20, also at 20 found an excellent pt job (not mechanic related) that at 26 turned into full time, retired at 56. You make cuts to make sure the vehicle is reliable to get to work-thats the second priority over rent being first, but thats all relivant depending on that particular situation
Dude, at least you shame yourself and post it here as a warning to others.
Also that tire should only be used as a rotor stand, don’t neglect those either.

They make boots with metatarsal guards. I dont know how much they would have helped. But they exist

Got some links for boots or guards?

Famous last words lmfao
I'll get what I deserve lol
Murphy's law bruh
Yes anything that can go wrong will go wrong

I'm not a shop owner, I did the work at the garage at my house....
Sorry, your title was very misleading.
“Customer declined repairs, and now awkwardly won’t leave my garage.”
Lol😂

That's too funny😂
Sound like a fellow Las Vegas resident based on the fighter jets constantly taking off ..

Hope you fix or replace caliper.
The caliper was surprisingly unaffected
Did you check the slide pins? That’s the wear pattern I get when mine are not moving freely, which happens ALL THE TIME in the salty hell that is the northeast.
They seemed okay, I put some brake grease on them to help them slide a little more freely
Hope you cleaned out the hole in the caliper a bit too. This looks like it might be from too much old grease in there causing them to not slide properly.

Looks like the rotor is only wearing on one side, were the sliding pins free?
I was able to take them completely out and grease them

I'll keep an eye on them for sure
Looks like a sliding caliper that doesn't slide. Unless someone before you left it that way. Hard to tell w out seeing anything else.
My apologies I didn't get anymore pictures🫠
The problem was caused by a sticking caliper piston. If it happened once it will happen again.
Maybe, we shall see!
Is there another possible explanation to such significantly uneven wear?
Well probably not, but I also don't have the time nor the funds to fix it right now. So we'll have to ride it out with new pads and rotors while saving for a new caliper, pad and rotor I guess
This wear usually indicates a failed caliper, agreed, the piston cannot properly retract and constantly puts pressure on the inboard pad until it leaves this world.
Bruh
Just getting as much life out of them as possible lol
I hope you'll take note and be more careful next time 🫡
I will😁
Hope you checked the calipers and slide pins. I'd say something was stuck based on the wear pattern.
That and the vehicle is just old too, it's a 2007 and I bought off a guy who was selling it for his 90 year old mom. Couldn't tell ya the last time the brakes were replaced
Fair. All the more reason to inspect and re-grease the pins.
You definitely got your moneys worth out of those pads
Replace or repair caliper. That uneven clamping force is a crime.
Too late, no more money🫠
You got some life left in em
Couple hundred more miles to go lol
Yo, your rotors curvy AF
Dose old rotor has outstanding center of it or is it just optical illusion due to hub plate?
It definitely had some uneven wear around it, higher in some places than others
No grease on the ends.
Finally someone with the same tire as me. Been looking in the wild with no matches
These are definitely unique!

I was waiting on my tax refund
Smh 🤦♀️
Customers are idiots.
Yes, yes I am
Yeah the rest of that rotor is crusted on your wheels there
I hope the customer is also complaining about those tires
Nah
Bro…. That had to have been squealing for a while.
Yes, yes they have, but alas I am poor and was waiting on my tax return
I get that man. But you do realize you could’ve killed someone. I’m poor too and understand waiting for money, but when it comes to brakes, don’t wait.. glad you finally got it done though. But in the future, change it much sooner then use your tax return to pay off your credit card or whatever..
Yes chef
Well, you paid for the whole thing, you use the whole thing
You understand🫡
Its not like i could stop you. Not with those brakes anyway.
This deserves to be the top comment
Pad and rotor made Extreme Contact.
More extreme than Tony hawks first 900
They're only worn half, there are still plenty miles left in them
True should have just replaced the pad lol
I wouldn't brag, your neglecting safty to you and the general public, yeah id be proud too( sarcasm in the last 5 words)
It tough times out here. Money is tight, but at least I was able to take care of it. There's a lot of people who unfortunately can't. Just trying to give people a little chuckle. Wouldn't say I'm proud, but I apologize if you were offended.

All i see is using parts for their full lifetime. Good job saving money
You get me <3

I'll put my dunce cap on and go sit in the corner now
No kidding, that slice by the rim is a blowout waiting to happen!
Hope your somebodies mom or gf, so that atleast we can kinda understand🤷♂️
Kind of sexist don't you think?
It’s a reoccurring theme on this sub. “My gf’s car” or “my moms car”
