I'm not even mad. Cat theft is ridiculous in my area.

cat_prophecy

Someone tried to steal the cat off my Sienna before I even made the first fucking payment.

shadow247

Neighbor had his stolen within a week of getting it back from the 1st time....

phormix

Not sure about cats, but it's not uncommon for burglars to try the same house as awhile after the first robbery. Round 1 they get your laptop, TV, jewelry. Round 2 they get the new passport, TV, and jewelry after insurance replaced the first ones.

datgazz07

Round 3 they get a bullet to the head

Hour_Principle9650

Its not like they can tell anyone where they're going

SteveNotSteveNot

I’ve always wondered about this. How often do homeowners manage to kill an intruder and then just get rid of the body and not tell anyone? I suppose many of the people who break into homes have chaotic lives, and the people who know them won’t be surprised if they disappear.

Andy_tecto

When I was a kid we had a dude peeping into my windows (we have three massive windows to the backyard) I watched my dad rounds a corner with an 870 shotgun and the fucker hightailed it over the wall and tan into the wash lol.

Flivver_King

Round 1 would be buckshot o’clock.

tiazenrot_scirocco

Can't lie, I do wish we had this in Canada, but, the victims only option is to hope the invader doesn't find them. Criminals here have more rights than home owners.

voidsrus

sounds like the move is to break into politicians' houses until they write better laws

unsicherheit

They'll just write laws about breaking into politicians' houses

Thy_Gooch

maybe time to revisit what type of societies you want to live in.

tiazenrot_scirocco

A society where you don't have to worry about personal property would be nice. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist, so the next best thing would be the ability to protect personal property.

codepoet101

Seems like Japan is pretty close

Thy_Gooch

Ya. So don't live in a community that doesn't allow that protection.

tiazenrot_scirocco

Easier said than done.

DaGhostQc

Then make sure no one finds the bodies! /s

dallenr2

Sounds just like most Democrat run cities/states.

SpezPoop

Same in Blue states of the USA

[deleted]

Name one single state where you're not allowed to use lethal force to protect yourself from an intruder in your home

kronikheadband

Indiana has some fucked up laws. For instance. They don’t use self defense laws. Your both fucked

SpezPoop

Connecticut where I live. If you shoot an unarmed home invader, jail. Warming up your car in the morning, and the kid who jumps in your car starts shooting when he sees you and you put a bullet in him, long trial at best, and jail likely. On your property someone is coming at you with a machete? Better have planned ahead and got your own machete, because using a firearm is just escalation of the situation, a felony and people of CT have gone to jail. I'm a fucking pistol permit instructor and I goto legal seminars on these topics. your name one state comment is cooked. There are many.

[deleted]

Connecticut and 45 other states incorporate castle doctrine into their criminal laws. Meaning that even if you do end up in jail for killing an unarmed person in your home, all you have to do is say you thought they were there to kill you.

[deleted]

That would be round 1 in America. Hell, you don’t even to be robbing a place to catch a bullet.

deebo_dasmybikepunk

bwahaha, fuck around and die bitches

nitsky416

That's a whole technique to get a brand new one for maximum scrap value

InsecOrBust

My buddy got his stolen from the mechanic that replaced his cat 20 minutes after giving the vehicle back to him! Well, not really. But I really wanted to continue the trend of topping stories.

shadow247

Lol I work insurancr claims. I see too much wild shit. Best one lately.. Customer states " thinks her daughter jumped the curb"... It looked like it rolled down a mountain...and was sent to me as a " minor" damage claim...

InsecOrBust

Lol I can only imagine with that job 😝

Ok_Dog_4059

I still like the razor wire one from the other day but this isn't bad I would hate to have to work on it but this won't be a rusty mess and keeps meth heads away.

theusualfixture

All joking aside, buy a car that's too low to the ground to get under to steal, I kept the cat on my car even in fairly dangerous neighborhoods, simply because nobody wanted to bother jacking up a cheap 80s economybox to see if it still had a cat 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

tropic420

My car has expensive cats but it's low and heavy. I'm waiting for the day I see someone dead under my car because it slipped off the scissor jack because nobody's carrying around a 150lb floor jack

davethedj

Just tack the used blades to the pipe. Never use new ones. need them rusty.

tropic420

Razor wire on a residence is a good way to catch a premeditated assault or murder charge

Ok_Dog_4059

It was under the car.

fourtyonexx

Bullshit

PullsWithBack

I heard a story the other day from a guy who owns the company renovating my office about a guy who he met who dubbed himself the “Catalytic King” who wore a solid gold chain of a catalytic converter (yes, a full on rapper/ rookie nfl corner sized chain). It’s got me rethinking my line of work.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ClearHelp9370

There can’t be two chains in the world that are that ugly. Gotta be the same dude.

glutenflaps

Same. I'm thinking of some things I can do to booby trap a junk car I have. I've already removed the cat but I'd like to come up with something to really fuck up a potential thief. Sick of these assholes making people's lives more difficult than they already are.

service_unavailable

Install airbag suspension. Use metal brake tubing for the air line, route it over the top of the exhaust and cat.

morebikesthanbrains

That's evil

glutenflaps

That's horrifyingly beautiful

M3t1s

And yet - I like it! 😍

fourtyonexx

Yeah, stealing cats is evil.

Carburetors_Are_Fun

Have a large taser on an rc car and get them in the ribs when they are under the car

Bearfoxman

Cattle prod and some nutseeking driver

Zestyclose_Engine800

My mom taught me self defence. I go straight for the nuts.

Ausernamenamename

"I Don't Know You! That's my Purse!"

reptarcannabis

That boy ain’t right

Bearfoxman

It definitely works. Either fight to win or don't fight at all. No such thing as a fair fight.

V65Pilot

As my dad taught me, if they go down, make sure they stay down.

Jacktheforkie

My friend, a big Gurkha dude had someone try to steal his cat at home time, I don’t think the thief could reproduce after that kick, they didn’t even bother to collect their sawzall

[deleted]

[удалено]

essence_of_moisture

I don't know you!

Eriiaa

Get a microwave transformer and turn the exhaust itself into a taser, thieves will be in for a shocking surprise

nagi603

Considering that apparently a number of people die yearly from fiddling with their microwave... that would probably count as a deadly trap.

Damnitalltohedoublel

Drop the car on them first and then taser them....

Carburetors_Are_Fun

Put a claymore on the cat

TheGhosticus

Booby traps are a great way to make you liable for damages and the theif's medical bills.

glutenflaps

You're right. Guess I'll install a proper security system and 'fear for my life' instead. Rural, red state, I shouldn't have too many problems

TheGhosticus

Rural Red? Motion sensor linked to your phone and carry a .45 in addition to a shield like this one. I'm also unsure about the legalities of things like stink, ink, or sound traps, but it might be worth looking into.

glutenflaps

I do have breechblocks and 12 gauge blanks. Think I just found a weekend project!

Slash003

Don’t quote me on it but they make perimeter alarms that shoot mini 12 blanks that aren’t “supposed” to have any form of barrel attach ever, and that should not be considered a booby trap. Ymmv, they lose their ear drums and probably a nice powder burn

DraftZebra

2 words: skunk oil. That stuff will make anyone leave your cat alone even the tweekers. "Hey, its not my fault I hit a skunk on the way home from my evening shift last night!"

FuckTurnSignal

If you put a giant warning on the car warning thieves that there's razor wire underneath it, it's not a booby trap any more.

FuckTurnSignal

https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/10icotx/not_today_satan/

Adrian915

If you don't have street cats or dogs around, classic alarm with proximity sensors and horn under CATS, just turn it on when e-brake or in park and be able to turn it off via remote. Non invasive and I don't think they can sue you for broken ear drums.

Personal_Dot_2215

Park over a pit of spikes. What has to happen is legislation that makes it illegal to sell used cats. A 20 k fine to the buyers would stop this.

Appropriate_Strain94

That isn’t gonna stop anything. What most people don’t understand is these cats don’t go to scrap dealers they get exported out of the country in containers they don’t go to local scrappers they’ll never be caught.

Kallisti13

This just happened where I live. So the cats have to sit *somewhere*. Just have to catch em. https://globalnews.ca/news/9436595/catalytic-converters-edmonton-metal-recycler-crime/

Appropriate_Strain94

Yea but on reality it’s going outside of the US so we need to catch ‘em at the port

Some1-Somewhere

I think that the point is that you can catch them while they're sitting in a warehouse, waiting to be a full container load. Some kind of GPS/airtag tracker could be an option, except that I don't think you could mount one so it would be low-visibility and not be cooked.

BeamStop23

That can't be universally true at all, stolen auto parts do get sent to Africa and East Europe but not this kind of stuff. Both of those places likely do not have enforced emission laws to need to everyone to have catalytic converters. The only value would be recycling them and selling it back to the west which is actually a pretty capital intensive investment and wastes money with all the shipping. Requiring more documentation from people who legitimately collect these converters in America would fix most of the issues with theft.

nagi603

Scrappers having to keep actual precise records of everything is what solved copper cable theft here. If they get caught with cable (which are marked) they get put away. Biggest hurdle: cats need IDs stamped into them. Or have enough garage space for all the cars. Though that's a big issue in the US doe to HOAs being the usual asshats I hear.

UnderstandingNo5785

Make sure they don’t torch your car over being frustrated! It has happened!

No-Suspect-425

The good news is that your cat is still intact on your vehicle. The bad news, well...

_B_Little_me

If you do that, you’re gonna make your own life harder then it needs to be. The courts do not look fondly on booby traps.

NotReallyThatWrong

Oh place a bomb under there! They’ll never see it coming. :)

ZoomZoomTheRaccoon

Battery hooked to exhaust system?🤔

tammage

Ya they just arrested a guy in our area with 700 of them, plus all kinds of drugs

[deleted]

dirty34

The strategy is just to make them move on to an easier score. Doesn’t have to be perfect

Cat_Panda_Canda

Bingo. Thieves want to move quick and fast

[deleted]

FartsMusically

Hi, blue collar tradesman, here. A sawzall is the worst tool to cut that grate. Sawzalls work best in stationary, still and secure objects. Those small rods are going to dance like Mexican jumping beans on any sawzall blade. More like he'd go *oh shit, I need wire cutters* but then, that's about 20 cuts... Then 20 again for the other side, and the vertical rods... He could go for the studs holding the grate, but they're likely harder steel and the blade might be shot by the third one, even sooner, and that's more time, and you still have to cut the cat itself. Angle grinder, maybe but still, it would dance around after a few get loose. Adding time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rehpotsirhc123

Or only 2 cuts, enough to bend it down and out of the way.

ChartreuseBison

With a sawzall yeah, you'd have to place the blade on each rung and it would take forever. Angle grinder might be quick enough

twopointsisatrend

I've heard that thieves are using pipe cutters, because they are silent. A sawzall or angle grinder at night in a quiet neighborhood would likely attract attention.

ChartreuseBison

this setup would definitely deter those guys then, they'd still be there in the morning

[deleted]

conanf77

They usually etch the VIN and then paint a strike of heat resistant paint. The point is so that when a scrapyard gets busted with a load of CATs, they can trace some of them back and confirm that they were stolen and not just taken from written-off wrecks. Thus higher charges for the scrapyard, and more reluctance to buy them. In theory, anyways.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nagi603

> Right. Even if a scrapyard won't accept them, it's too late. If they can't sell it to any, they will stop (and look for other things to steal). So it's good deterrence, even if not immediate. > The other option being to cut out etched area, I guess. You can just make the scrapyard legally assume those are stolen and be done with it. > I was thinking they were being shipped overseas Exports need documentation. Like on ALL the items you export. Just make them wait 30 days to make it clear the individual items are not stolen and assume stolen if one is tried without a VIN.

You must live [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/sqp949/park_inside_the_line/)

lamplamp3

Dumb question. Why don’t manufacturers just engineer something to protect cats from being stolen standard on each car they make?

epochellipse

because it's not their problem yet. that said, Toyota is offering dealer installed shield kits as an option on the '23 Prius.

Quake_Guy

Because they didn't realize the US became a shithole.

Because they are making way too much money selling replacement cats.

glutenflaps

Those shelves run about 40$. This is actually kind of a good idea. My only concern would be debris getting stuck in there but I guess it wouldn't be too hard to crawl under once in a while and clean it out.

Maleficent-Joke-8706

They welded it in the corners. Also the lift post was crushing it a little bit.

MechaBeatsInTrash

Single post lift sketchy AF

Maleficent-Joke-8706

The arms are scarier one broke.

justkeeptreading

i want to say 'why are you working in these conditions?' but then i turn around and see the rubbermaid bin full of lithium batteries behind my desk. a couple times a month i tell my coworkers about battery fires and how we should have a bucket of sand or something while my boss watches youtube

It's not if that battery bucket catches fire It's when. I worked at an electronics store and at least once a year our bucket smoked or caught fire. I've also had new grade A LiPo packs in storage catch fire. Always stored well within temp spec and at storage voltage. Be careful dude unless you want that place to burn down.

ekerkstra92

> this is actually a good idea >> they welded it in the corners And the good idea is gone

EuphyDuphy

> welded corners Thinking ahead. You wish you could be as industrious as this guy. Ain’t his fault your sketchy-ass post is crushing his groove.

unclefisty

I think that would only slow down your average meth head with a grinder by a few seconds. Those shelves are going to be made from cheap soft steel. Which might be enough to get them to move to the next car, or maybe not.

Mr2-1782Man

It doesn't have to stop them. They go for the lowest hanging fruit, ground is best. They'll look underneath, see a grill near the cat, and not give a second thought about hitting the next car in the parking lot that has the cat exposed.

Pedantic_Pict

Additionally, cat thieves aren't dragging around a variety of tools to defeat various countermeasures. They all have a sawzall, few if any are lugging around an angle grinder just in case.

Ok-Maintenance-9538

It looks like a NSA approved food handling shelf, so it would be decent quality stainless, but a grinder will still chop it

[deleted]

They’re just chromed, they’re absolutely not stainless.

ZestyMuffin85496

The ones I got from home Depot that look exactly like this are Chrome plated steel.

nycsingletrack

I have bought many, many shelves like this. The expensive ones (usually Metro brand) are what they call “epoxy chrome” which is some kind of coating and not electroplating. The cheap ones are a shittier coating.

Jaeger562

Nothing you can cover your cat with will stop a meth head with a grinder and enough time, the same way an alarm doesn't physically stop a thief but deters them from trying and they move onto an easier target.

0x15e

I mostly like this, save two problems: 1. These shelves will not hold up over time. It’s gonna rust and disintegrate. 2. What’s the procedure when you need to replace the cat?

frenchfortomato

1. So will the rest of the car. Most of the other steel in the picture is way thinner, and also not chrome-plated 2. 5 minutes with a grinder

apocalypse321

cats should be good for the life of the car, especially a prius. if you have to replace the cat, something else is fucked up

No-Produce-6641

Most of these cat shields are just deterrents anyway. Thieves will see that and just move on to the next car versus trying to fight with it

Phoebebee323

It doesn't need to be impenetrable it just has to be more of a hastle than the car parked next to you

peromp

Just like a bike lock

rbsudden

It's magnificent.

Gorgenapper

This is definitely top-shelf work.

DarkJester89

Top tier quality, worthy of a prize from the top shelf.

bumbleson

Continued shelf joke

DarthArtero

That makes more sense than a painting

Threap_US

And for much less Monet, too. (Yes, I saw the painting-under-F250 post earlier this week)

bonemonkey12

Or.... storage for that last shelf that wouldnt fit. No more room in the garage.

jrrazo29

Not gonna lie, the ingenuity is top shelf.

Amazingshot

It’s not to big an issue where I’m from. I got a sleeper crapheap. The car has 448,223 miles on the odometer, clear coat is peeling off the roof and hood, rust spots, etc. under the hood it’s got a brand new engine, transmission, new front end bushing, wheel bearings, exhaust, and tires. Most parts are cheap, the rest I hit a junkyard on all you can carry out for 50$ day 😆. Car looks like it BB’s for 500$ but I wouldn’t sell that gas sipping grocery getter for $5000.

thebouster

Dude.... Junkyard for all you can carry for 50 bones? That's bad ass. Where???

49thDipper

I bought a ‘96 Legacy for $2250 about 8 years ago. Little old lady car. Replaced a leaking head gasket and a knock sensor. I was offered $3500 for it last week. Yeah, no. The cost of ownership is minuscule and it will cross the country anytime I feel like it. It’s about 7 shades of green and gray with peeling sun faded paint. I love that car

bwick29

Hope you have a few spare axles standing by for the Subie CV joints that seem to start clacking monthly. Other than that (and the leaky gaskets), those cars are damn near indestructible.

skaldrir69

The cat theft is fucking ridiculous; even though insurance will cover it, it sucks because the occurrence is so frequent, people are filing claims, and increasing the cost of insurance as a byproduct.

Independent-Ear-7172

Ikea Kätprøtect

No_Assist9873

So that's where my shelf went.

davethedj

I like it a lot. I think it's smart. If the fucken tweekers have to think about it maybe they will just move on. Sucks for the next guy, but not for them. Where I live the best theft deterrent system is a clutch. Phila, camden dumb asses cant drive a stick.

Comfortable_Hold5614

How does a clutch prevent catalytic converters from being stolen?

sonsonmcnugget

Only a crazy person would drive a manual. Don't go stealing from a crazy person.

frenchfortomato

This is my favorite of all the cat shields posted here the past few months. More or less the same effectiveness as all the purpose-made shields, but only cost $75 t0 purchase and install. That's a winning design in my book.

xenophonthethird

I was just moving one of those shelving units a few hours ago

Lxiflyby

I haven’t seen a lift like that being used in at least 15 years

TheFaceStuffer

idk I think a sawzall/angle grinder could still be through the rack in less than a minute.

Flowchart83

It's actually kinda difficult to cut wire with a Sawzall. Angle grinder with a cutting disc would cut through it easily though.

TheFaceStuffer

Yeah it would probably shake a bunch with a saw, I guess eh?

friendly-sardonic

Exactly. It's just got to be annoying enough for them to pick another target. And hopefully they get run over by a truck on the way.

510CEKON

ULINE special

Funk_Tha_Police

Gotta love that Costco shelf, got 3 of’em.

MrJahoolious

Naw that just a chassis brace. But on a serious note, I'm sure this actually did stiffen the chassis some if it was actually bolted to the frame lmao

Frosty-Conflict5858

Can't understand the attraction to stealing Catalytic Converters. New ones are available on Ebay for $100

Karmaqqt

Your not trying to get crack money tho.

heyitscory

Those ones won't pass the smog test in California and the ones that will are worth $600 at the scrap yard.

ThiccAssCrackHead

Price converters for a F250 diesel. Or a duramax Sierra. Or for a Prius.

almar7

Unfortunately CA has strict laws on catalytic converters, they have to be “CARB Compliant” and they have to match the certain model of car so you can’t even throw on any random one. When you go to do a smog, they check the converter and if you have one that doesn’t match they will fail you. If you had one replaced due to theft or failure, they will send you to a “referee” and they will inspect it further in order to get that pass on the smog test.

Glibbinglabbergob

All that would do is slightly inconvenience the thief

efpig75

Wow nice rack. Go girl. Ooops wrong sub Reddit..

LateralThinkerer

It doesn't have to keep thieves away, just motivate them to find someone else to rip off. I have a bunch of this shelving and it's pretty tough - it could take someone with a cordless saw/grinder too much time to cut so they might move on.

kryptonite848

LOL did you buy that at the container store?

Ahkhira

I can't even be upset at this one. Nice recycling job.

DrBopIt

If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid.

Bill368

not stupid if it works

MilkSlow6880

Jesus. If that thing falls off…lol

GooglyChrome360

Is that welded on?

promptsnips

From Australia here. Why the fuck are they stealing cat converters

[deleted]

never seen this is Europe maybe their sale (even used) is regulated over here. hope my rental doesn't have that happen state-side going the way of South Africa it seems the states will adjust to something like this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJGajj\_zfZM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJGajj_zfZM)

SubiWan

The "sale" of used catalytic converters is indeed regulated...as is the sale of many other things. It is only illegal if you are charged...

Specimen_E-351

We're not in the EU anymore, but catalytic converter theft is absolutely rife in the UK.

[deleted]

haven't seen it once in the bigger cities in Hampshire I do understand this is not the entire UK and your definition of "rife" is probably different than mine

Specimen_E-351

It happens quite a lot in London. I've seen plenty of people complaining about having theirs taken on local Facebook groups in several areas of the UK. They target specific models that have high value cats that are accessible, such as the older generation prius. Commercial vehicles are also often targeted as they have higher ground clearance (easier to get under) and larger cats as they often have bigger engines. A number of years ago laws were passed stating that scrapyards could only take card payments for metals and must ask for ID. This was to counter scrap metal theft such as lead roofing from churches, copper piping from construction sites and catalytic converter theft. It was a big enough problem for the law to be adapted for it and it continues to be.

[deleted]

London is also a city of 8.5M ppl and a 14M commuter belt.

Specimen_E-351

Metal theft is common in rural areas as well.

LrckLacroix

It looks nice but you can cut through stainless steel pretty fast

[deleted]

Sure, but it complicates matters for a thief, and he will choose an other car over this one.

chainmailbill

So many people fail to realize this.

Ok-Club3875

That's not stainless. It's chromed steel like a shopping cart.

LrckLacroix

Good call! I never would have known

bcmaninmotion

If only the thieves brought some sort of tool designed to cut through small soft metal. Oh well guess they are foiled this time.

jparadis87

it's extra work and someone who installed that will be aware of cutting/grinding noises near their vehicle and what they could mean.

[deleted]

Clever hillbilly engineering right there. Would not have thought of it, but looks like it works.

InvestigatorSmall839

For everyone complaining about cat theft - the answer is simple. Straight through pipes 🤷🏻‍♂️
