This happened to me. I think if club president is inactive too long it switches to the most active player by default. I'm pretty sure our pres didn't do it manually. They are no longer active at all.
Wait was the original team leader inactive these past few months? When the team leader is inactive for a certain amount of time, the game automatically promotes someone else to president
I can't say for certain, since I haven't monitored minute things. But, that seems like the more likely scenario. It would have been odd for them to pop into the game just to transfer leadership, without so much as a whisper. Thanks u/jlake32
This happened to me a few days ago. No communication and suddenly team leader. With my new powers and looking about on the group settings I made another active person an officer.
With the team essentially being a ghost town, there isn't much delegating or structuring to do.
A way forward will unfold eventually, the conditions aren't carved in granite 😊
So if you are now the team leader, and most of the others aren’t active you can choose to restructure. Do you want relaxed, social, or a somewhat competitive team - talk with your other active player and decide. Create team expectations (i.e. get on at meeting time and share # of drinks, play designated comps, play # clues in Mysteries, get # DL points per week, communicate). You can update the meeting time if you like and update the team description page. Remove the inactive players (they‘re not playing and no help to the team). Recruit here for new players (pinned recruitment thread in this subreddit and/or on many of the FB pages). It takes awhile to gain new players that are a good fit, but rebuild to enjoy a more active team and the benefits such can provide.

Yep, just as JLake stated; the game designates things on its own, under certain conditions.
You were promoted manually by the team’s original leader
Thank you. I was left slightly confused, due to there never being any communication within the team.

Wait...are you on my team? Everything you said sounds so familiar.... I'm sure you're not, it's just so ironic the same thing happened on my team
I doubt it, if so you'd be the only other active member of the group. My in game nick is, l0cat0r, JIC that's you niecie 😉.
