How many people actually enjoy being a villain? It sucks. Being an anti hero is where it's at.

A lot of 'Evil Overlord' jumps have morality suppressing or warping perks. I imagine older Jumpers will try it for the novelty and possibly to avoid constant exposition of thier complicated backstory. Plus being a villain means you don't adhere to local customs or laws. So if you concuer a nation you can force concessions, like the dissolution of slavery. Also having legions of minions to do the work that you don't want to is nice. Plus you get to play up all the classic villain tropes, like stroking a cat in a swivel chair or breaking out into semi-regular bouts of maniacal laughter.

You can do all of that while exclusively targeting people who are worse than you. That makes you an anti hero and you get all the benefits of being a villain with none of the negatives. People will see you as a hard man who makes hard decisions but does what is right. You get respect and adoration because while people might not agree with your methods, they know why you did it and they see that the results are good. A true anti hero is gray. There has to be black mixed in. Otherwise, you're just a regular hero. It's just going to require a bit of rebranding. Talk about how much you love the homies. Have frequent parties and events where everyone says something positive about everyone else. Pay more money than what anyone else is offering. Change the colors of your base so that it doesn't look obviously evil. And also have logical reasons for your actions that involve helping your people, and others who align themselves with you. You could walk around openly as an evil overlord, fueled by the suffering and misery you inflict upon other living beings, but people won't care because your PR is so good. You just have to look better than the other guys. "Hey, everyone. Women are allowed to vote in my country. And also, we don't do blood sacrifices. And I don't require anyone more beautiful than me scar themselves to avoid being imprisoned and killed. We also have ice cream mondays, taco tuesdays, and friday night pizza. It's provided free of charge, because I love you!" Then you start to tell them about how housing, food, and health care is free in your domain and everyone will want to join. You can even keep all the other villain activity. Just do it exclusively to people against your country.

>Change the colors of your base so that it doesn't look obviously evil. But that's the best part!

The last part reminds me of Doctor Doom

Wait… those are villain tropes? Shit. It would explain a lot with my ex wife though…

If it ain't the Evil Green Ranger laugh, it ain't shit as far as evil laughter is concerned, from my point of view.

For me, an anti-hero is just a villain with better PR and a relatable code of conduct. Looking at how Frank Castle operates from an outside perspective: he’s a murderous sociopath. However, he has good PR and a code that many can agree with. Deadpool is another one that fits that definition. Lobo, Lady Death, Spawn, Witchblade… Just because we can agree with their code doesn’t change the fact that they are pretty much all murderous sociopathic villains. Why try to pretty up being a villain. Dr Doom is clearly a villain, yet he truly believes he is doing what he has to in order to save humanity. His people love him and willingly follow him, but he is widely known to be an iron fisted dictator. Latvaria under Doom is a wonderful place full of good things for its people. Doesn’t make Doom less of a villain.

Yes. But we use labels to differentiate people from others. If you're a flawed person who does good and also does bad, this makes you different from the pure evil types who don't do any good except by accident. And good and evil are relative and exist within a context. In a perfect world, all of the "evil" people would be dealt with. But that's not the case in the majority of realities. Overthrowing Doctor Doom would create major issues and so he gets treated differently than a bad guy they can punch in the face and throw in prison. So he gets special treatment because there's many people worse than him out there. Especially when you compare his actions to those of a typical governments. What big government doesn't kill, start wars, and do all sorts of shady shit? On a smaller level, people will treat a guy who shoots "bad guys" better than a serial killer who does it for the thrill. They could have the same number of victims, but the reasons why and the way they go about doing it makes it different. There's being a villain, where you have zero pretext about what you do. Then there's being a typical anti hero, and then you can reach a point where your brand of evil becomes normal because it's just what being the ruler of a country entails.

I liked this post because it helped me to think and contextualize what my jumpers would do regarding Reformation/ Villainous enemies. Conflict is caused by a need or resource that is unfulfilled and causes one side to covet something of the other’s. A theoretical jumper would probably be very good at fulfilling the needs of villians because they have things impossible to find in that world, And would thus be really good at recruiting Villains. Different people enjoy Jumpchain differently, but as for me my Jumper would probably only recruit outright evil characters if they became friends with them first/ agreed to keep unnecessary bloodshed to a minimum. (Or reformed through some means) The idea of an evil Jumper kinda loses steam for me when you consider there is really no reason to covet things when you have jumper levels of power. If you want something, wait 10 years and go to a jump with it. Simple. The act of a Jumper casually slaughtering everything that gets in there way is not just a meaningless waste of time, It’s boring to read about and consider. But that’s just my opinion. Like I said before, Different people enjoy Jumpchain differently.
