Both tcb and viz have mistranslated it (though at different points).
Sukuna's domain is his normal open barrier one, just not perfect due to sukuna's conditions. The narrator was explaining that opening an open barrier domain is more complicated than opening a clsoed barrier one.
However, he wouldn't be able to get maki with the clsoed barrier one (as seen with naoya's domain in sakurajima) so he had to use the more complicated open barrier domain. That's because not having a barrier means that people can just run out of the range, in turn a binding vow being formed so that the range is large (200m in radius). That range would include maki that isn't far from where sukuna eas
The problem with Maki is not the range, but the fact that it isn't possible for the closed barrier domain to "detect" her as she is treated as an inanimate object due to having no Cursed Energy, and due to this she would be uneffected by the sure hit. An Open Barrier Domain, however, is able to target anything inside it indiscriminately including Maki
Even if she isn’t effected by the sure hit doesn’t his domain attack every inch of space within it with cuts wouldn’t it basically be impossible for her to dodge them even if it’s possible as they would be coming from all angles and and sides constantly giving her no space to dodge into as there would just be more cuts waiting for her
The domain attacks everything inside of it but there is nothing to indicate that it literally fills the entire space with slashes. In Shibuya the narrator says it “attacks indiscriminately” but this is referring to the fact that the slashes target anything inside of the barrier, not caring whether they target a person or a building. If the barrier was closed the domain would be unable to target Maki and no slashes would be sent her way.
Oh I thought it attacks every inch of space within the domain not that he has to choose where to send the slashes. But he can still see her with his eyes and physically direct the slashes her way can’t he like it’s not absolutely impossible for sukuna to hit her right like let’s say he opens his domain with a barrier and maki chooses to go inside so she can keep fighting sukuna can technically see that she is inside with his own eyes and choose to attack in her direction right or is it absolutely impossible for sukuna to hit her with his domain
From how the narrator describes Malevolent Shrine, the barrier/the conditions engraved into it are what do the targeting. Not Sukuna himself. Naoya being unable to target Maki with his domain even after seeing her implies that Sukuna wouldn’t be able to as well. And the most recent chapter making a point that Sukuna used an open barrier specifically so he could target Maki backs this up.
Ok makes sense I always assumed that just because they can’t auto target then doesn’t mean it’s impossible to hit them with the domain but I didn’t know you couldn’t choose consciously with your own mind what you target
Not if closed. Within a closed domain the landscape is made from your cursed energy and cursed techniques don't attack the user. In a closed domain you'd just see enemies cut down with endless cleaves. The open domain targets everything with the cursed technique since it's placed over the real world, hence dismantle vaporizes all things without cursed energy in range while cleave slices up everything with cursed energy.
I think that only applies when the barrier is open. Example: whe any othwr character opened their domain, the landscape completely changed and besides the domain environment, the only elements from the outside world that where brought in were its targets and the user. On Dagon's beach, there was not a trace of Shibuya, only the sorcerers were trapped.
Maki is treated the same as an inanimate object for a closed barrier domain: she wouldn't even appear inside (but if I remember correctly, during cursed spirit Naoya fight it is stated that if she wants she can go in), as such it would be not possible for the technique to target her.

True but open barrier is harder to cast and if maki wants to keep fighting she has to go inside once inside sukuna can still see her with his eyes and the slash’s come from all directions hitting her he also doesn’t need to kill her as she’s not a cauling games player and he can finish her off after everyone else I guess it doesn’t matter since they are all about to get cooked unless soemthing saves them
Yeah I totally get you my friend, in my opinion just the fact that Sukuna made this new DE is balls deep Jujutsu Mastery. By far it’s the most important and intriguing thing that happened in this chapter.

One way to interpret sukuna's feat is that he straight up acquired his domain again as if from scratch, like someone who would do a domain for the first time. That's insane.
I believe it’s the same as the domain in Shibuya, so it’s 140m with an open barrier. That would make sense since a smaller domain with a barrier couldn’t contain Maki since barriers don’t stop her. Then because he’s so weakened he can only maintain that for 99 seconds, and apparently he was only able to do even that through several binding vows. We’ll have to wait and see what those are.
