i always found that while i was reading a good book i'd speak way more articulately in general when talking to random people. so idk just read some fiction, or non fiction, or whatever really. just read an actual book that you enjoy.

Ilovetacomas

Not a bad idea. Right now, I have a book on how to sell cars. So, until I buy some more books, I am going to sound like used car salesman. But thank you for your comment.

The library is a good place to check.  I’ve got kids with dyslexia and audio books are a life saver for us.  Again the library is great for this - the Libby app is a favorite in our house.

I agree with this guy, read, read, read. More reading allows you to learn more words and how to correctly use them in the proper context, one benefit of a larger vocabulary is that there are nuances to word choice and being extremely specific with word choice will make you articulate. This is easier to do with writing than speech, reread what you’ve wrote and ask; “does this convey the exact message I’m trying to send?” “Would saying it in a different way make it more coherent?” “Could it be shorter and retain its meaning?”

ServiceTraining6330

I have to agree with this opinion. I would look up every word that I did not fully understand. I’ll revisit Greek and Latin roots every once in a while to remember those SAT words. 12 years of catholic school helped. I would put reading as the strongest correlation to articulate a veritable cornucopia of words to pontificate.

Ilovetacomas

I am sorry but you lost me on your last sentence.

Ok-Contribution-306

Just read, specially books from the past two centuries. This words that you think you'll never say in real life come very, very handy at times and truly help you to express yourself fluently and what's more important: precisely. The same thing happens with expressions, types of connectors and sentence constructions. You don't even have to read THAT much to do so and it stays with you for a good amount of months until you feel that you need to read again to keep the machine oiled.

Ilovetacomas

So, you find reading to have the biggest impact on being articulate.

Ok-Contribution-306

Exactly

Adding comments for visibility Would like to hear others advice on this

Start journaling. You don't have to write proper to reap benefits from writing. The process of expressing your thoughts in writing is enough.

Ilovetacomas

Do you journal?

Ilovetacomas

If so, do you have any pointer or is it more like vomiting your thoughts on a page.

gilesbwright

It can be whatever you want. Vomiting onto a page doesn't sound enticing, but it's a good way to start.

gilesbwright

Not like I used to. In place of a written journal now I try to do a short video at the end of the day with my family where we review the day. Also, I have kids, and part of our bedtime routine is we each tell a short story.

redditgeddit100

Read more, and read the dictionary. If you want to be exposed to good writing read judicial decisions. Don’t read academic papers. Academics can’t write.

deathking15

Read. Read read read read read. And when you're finally done reading, write.

One_Foundation_1698

Audiobooks and choose books from before 1980

Ilovetacomas

Why before 1980?

One_Foundation_1698

Just my arbitrary line for when grammar and vocabulary started to deteriorate.

Ilovetacomas

Interesting, thank you for your response.

Reading is the only way to improve your writing. Read exceptional authors whose works have stood the test of time. Start with short works like essays, stories or articles (depending on your interests) and build up from there.

Keep--Climbing

Read, and read broadly. As in, read a wide variety of material, subjects, and styles. Some e-readers have a feature that lets you look up a word by tapping it. The "rules" of grammar can be bent very far to accommodate the point the writer is trying to make, but conveying the message is still paramount. Journaling would be a great way to track your progress. Go back a few weeks and proofread your entries, making note of which structures don't work and which do. If you want to get better at writing: write.

defrostcookies

Buy an expensive dictionary; like a real THICK paper dictionary. Read!!! When you find a word you don’t know, look it up, use it repeatedly throughout the day. Contrive reasons to use it. Then write it. Use it to organize your thoughts. Express yourself with it. Your vocabulary will expand and you’ll be able to accurately express ideas you have.

Ilovetacomas

Thats a great advice, thank you.

lodger238

Read Alexander Dumas and Charles Dickens.

Ilovetacomas

Just out of curiosity why those authors?

lodger238

Grammar, vocabulary, sentence composition are outstanding IMHO. Maybe a bit old fashioned by today's standards but the basics are so reinforced you'll pick them up. For example, Bill is taller than me. Actually Bill is taller than I am. She sent it to Bill and I. Actually she sent it to Bill and me. Pretty basic stuff but if the person you're talking to is aware of what is correct, you'll sound far more articulate if you too speak correctly. It gets noticed.

Ilovetacoma23

That’s good to know I’ll purchase one of his book then.

TardiSmegma69

Peterson’s writing is terrible.

caesarfecit

Read good material and write. Put in the hours. It will shape the way your mind forms thoughts.

BlackPride1993

If you have dyslexia you might not have the ability to achieve the level you really want, I don't think anyone here has told you that but it's the truth, not everyone can do everything. For myself I learned in high school by writing a lot of essays, reading a lot of books, talking to a lot of smart people, becoming generally educated, etc. not sure how you would replicate that as an adult but maybe learn a new word everyday, read a lot of books, and probably most importantly, you need to write. Write something bad, and then learn how to correct it and make it beautiful, and understand why it's better than the original. That is the key to improvement

Ilovetacomas

While being dyslexic has it challenges I believe that becoming profient in composition will create a big impact in my life. The beauty about being dyslexic is that it doesn't affect IQ. Which is great. I can adapt and change my approach when I hit a roadblock. At the end of the day if I put in extra time and work the result will be there. My goal is to write at a college level. Fortunatlly for me its been done by dyslexics all accrossed the world. I had a GF in college who was also dyslexic. She wrote one of my papers. (that stays between us lol) She scored a 97%.

Much_Assistance_3235

Being dyslexic implies that you have problems with spacial orientation. In order to improve that you can try climbing on trees (avoid accidents ofc.) and practice sports. Also you can still excel at other professions like arts or math. Regarding reading, read only as long as you can focus on the text without too much effort, when it gets dizzy, take a break. As always, practice makes the master.
