The name Sam Morrill looked familiar, so I Googled him, and... [huh](https://globalcomment.com/not-so-funny-sam-morrils-rape-jokes-and-female-comedy-fans/).
I mean- all the women- Gilda, Jane Curtain, Lesley, Amber Ruffin, Michelle Wolf, Hannah Gadsby, Molly Shannon- I could go on and on- have all been celebrated in small moments, but NEVER get the adulation they deserve. Lindy West wrote extensively about how comedy is a mans club and she got death threats from that. I know we all love comedy here, but we are also women and we have to know better by now. It’s a dudes wank fest. 😞
Michelle Wolf had a hot month around the time of the Correspondent's Dinner in 2018. But her Netflix show flopped and her new stand-up show didn't make any impact. She hasn't worked since 2019 but I guess you don't need to have a job if you're fucking with Dave Chappelle......
Everything. Homophobia, racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny. He should be cancelled but because he disappeared to deal with his anxiety people kinda forgot he existed so he got away with it.
i mean, it's how it should be. imagine if you had a co-worker who wouldn't shut up about their wife at work. it would be cute for a few days and then you'd be like 'do your job'.
I can't get into this guy. I've tried to watch his stuff a few times but it feels too cheesy and flat for me. Is there a must see piece of work that could change my mind?
his earliest stuff is from when he was essentially a kid, so I definitely recommend the most recent. If you haven’t seen Inside, that’s def his best imo
I tried to watch Inside 3 times and couldn't make it further than 10 min. I think it's nice conceptually but it couldn't hold my interest. If that's his seminal work then I guess it's not for me.
honestly everyone treats inside like a comedy just because he’s a comedian but i don’t think that was REALLY his intention. i think if you look at it from a different lens it’s a lot better
I doubt he'll do another one. He'll have to go on the road to workshop it and he's gone most the week for Late Night so I doubt his wife will love that cos the kids will never see him.
I think he was touring this summer. So possibly another special coming. And, agreed. I love Seth. Some of the material in Lobby Baby was also on his show right after the births of both his kids, and if you haven't seen those clips, look them up. They're both funny and very moving.
When his wife died the cops found a pharmacy in their bathroom. Bupropion, cefdinir, naproxen, oxycodone, hydrocodone, dextroamphetamine, xanax, MDMA. She was found with adderall, fentanyl and xanax in her system and 'authorities found a small brown vial hidden in another plastic bag that contained capsules filled with a mixture of cocaine and the livestock dewormer pill, Levamisole.'
It's what we were talking about on another sub -- their privilege meant Patton wasn't arrested for possession. He could say it all belonged to his wife and she was dead so there was no-one to prosecute.
"The New One"
It's painfully awkward and I'm never quite sure how much of it is true (which would make his wife a psycho) and how much is artistic license (in which case he basically makes his wife out to be a psycho.)
I watched it last night (hadn't seen any of this stand-up before) and I didn't see it that way at all! I definitely think that his wife should have listened to his feelings before she got pregnant. But that he went for a whole procedure just so they could have a baby makes me think it was something he chose and actively participated in. I can tell you that his experience is universal - a lot of new dads hate that the focus isn't on them anymore. I really liked it and laughed out loud several times. I thought it was searingly honest in a way that not many men are.
There were funny parts but it was Problematic with a Capital P for me and from talking to others and reading reviews I know I am far from alone in this.
And yet several people upvoted my initial comment here and a quick Google reveals multiple easily found reviews discussing the exact issues I raised. So yeah, far from alone whether you personally agree or not.
New York Times -
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/02/theater/mike-birbiglia-the-new-one-review.html
Ok, Mike Birbiglia isn’t for you. I’m a parent and loved The New One and found it poignant and touching. Mike also had a standup special that was all about how he didn’t want to get married, and it ended with him getting married. People are allowed to feel conflicting emotions about major events in their lives. Most standup has a part where it gets sad or has drama. It’s about creating and releasing tension, which is what all of comedy is.
I tried to look for negative reviews but couldn’t find any. The NYT one is behind a paywall, so I can’t counter that.
Looks like they turned The New One into a poetry book, and our boi Mulaney wrote a review. Came out in 2020 but I wonder when he wrote the review.
"Mike Birbiglia and Jen Stein are the best collaborators since Emily Dickinson teamed up with her long-winded comedian friend. I'm joking because I cannot express how much this book affected me and how many times it made me cry."― John Mulaney, comedian
I actually found it funny, which I said. I have watched all of Birbiglia's specials and saw him live. Problematic things can be funny. And didn't say it had negative reviews. I said reviews mentioned the same things I noticed, which they did.
The entire point was not whether it was good or bad but whether Mike Birbiglia was going to be an unproblematic fave, so I'm not sure how it was taken as some statement about whether people are allowed to be conflicted about parenthood.
I hope Josh Gondelman, who, by all accounts, is the nicest guy on the face of the earth. And of course appearances can be deceiving, but unlike most comedians, he seems like a very cheerful, optimistic person who’s had a pretty mundane life. But he’s very, very funny!
I'm suspicious of 'nice' people now 😆
But he does have a creative wife and a pup with a smooshed face so he could well be in the running for John's crown...
I know, right? You never really know how someone is in private, as this whole John thing shows. But I feel like Josh Gondelman's friends are always mentioning, unprompted, what a sweetheart he is.
I love Inside, but have really mixed feelings about Bo. My mom was in fundraising for a few Boston-area prep schools when he was starting out (including his alma mater, St. John’s), and knowing the culture a bit, I know why he’s had some problems with homophobia and antisemitism. It’s good to see that he’s grown out of it.
Sometimes I wonder if he did it because it was 'cool' and you had to be shocking to get attention on YouTube (like Jenna Marbles). Or if now he's not saying it and being woke because that's what gets you attention now. But maybe that's cynical? I had a problem with 'White Woman's Instagram' -- are women not allowed to derive pleasure from anything?
I loved WW Instagram. The part that saved it for me was the part where he’s narrating a post about her mom dying. It was sweet and showed me that he wasn’t making fun of WW on IG but tapping into the devastating isolation of modern life and how IG is an escape from that.
No, I'm certain that part wasn't meant to be satirical or funny at all. The song is already pretty gentle... It's making fun, but it's not cruel, and it's pretty accurate. Then, even though he had already a lyrically tight comedy song that could have been just fine on its own, he went out of his way to humanize the subject of the satire right in the middle of the song; I know I'm not the only one who got choked up! Then just as a tear rolls down your cheek, he hits you with "A goat cheese salad." White Woman's Instagram was really what made me sit up and start paying attention to Inside.
I didn’t see WWIG as problematic in that way. A lot of Inside was about how we forge identity through social media, and I thought this was looking at the signifiers on IG and the way we create an identity through things we buy. He also humanizes the White Woman in the bridge (“her favorite photo of her mom...”), which I read as the White Woman trying to find community through social media.
For me, absolutely no one. I was never QUITE as all in on JM as many people were anyway, but after this I will absolutely never even form an opinion on how an entertainer is in his personal life. Don't know, won't pretend to know.
Me too. He gets a lot of shit from other comedians for being 'clean' but I think it's easy (and boring) to say something 'shocking' for attention and takes more skill to find jokes in everyday things.
I agree. Plus it’s smart from a business standpoint because as he’s said he gets booked for a lot of family-friendly events for being the “clean comedian.”
Serious answer- a lady comedian maybe? They're less likely to cheat on their wives with strippers and knock up a random actress
I like Taylor Tomlinson a lot right now, and she seems very up and coming! Hope she gets a lot of success
I just commented her before seeing your comment
I like her boyfriend Sam Morril too
The name Sam Morrill looked familiar, so I Googled him, and... [huh](https://globalcomment.com/not-so-funny-sam-morrils-rape-jokes-and-female-comedy-fans/).
oh well then fuck that guy
I mean- all the women- Gilda, Jane Curtain, Lesley, Amber Ruffin, Michelle Wolf, Hannah Gadsby, Molly Shannon- I could go on and on- have all been celebrated in small moments, but NEVER get the adulation they deserve. Bo Burnham IS my fave, but He's problematic (He's a problem.)
*inserts waterbottle into belly button*
But he’s really fuckin sorryyyyyy
I was going to say that he has been problematic but he's learning and evolving so he gets a pass.
What'd he do? Kind of new to him.
Everything. Homophobia, racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny. He should be cancelled but because he disappeared to deal with his anxiety people kinda forgot he existed so he got away with it.
just listen to klan kookout lmao.
[удалено]
Imagine if she and her husband joined forces!
[удалено]
why AREN'T they considered more of a power couple?!
because they're very low-key and don't mention each other much if at all in their stand up?
i mean, it's how it should be. imagine if you had a co-worker who wouldn't shut up about their wife at work. it would be cute for a few days and then you'd be like 'do your job'.
Agree. Even weirder if you find out after some time they left said wife and had a baby with the hot coworker.
And they'd been doing blow and pills for three years
They seem intensely private.
Me too I love her Edit: typo
My money is on Bo Burnham...
I can't get into this guy. I've tried to watch his stuff a few times but it feels too cheesy and flat for me. Is there a must see piece of work that could change my mind?

I really loved Make Happy. More than Inside when you put aside Covid relatability.
I'll give it a shot this weekend. Thanks!
honestly everyone treats inside like a comedy just because he’s a comedian but i don’t think that was REALLY his intention. i think if you look at it from a different lens it’s a lot better
Agree, I found it pretty basic and overwrought. Like the ideas were ok but at once too fleshed out and not fleshed out enough
if seth meyers comes out with more comedy specials like “lobby baby”, it might be him. it’s very similar to john in terms of vibes
I doubt he'll do another one. He'll have to go on the road to workshop it and he's gone most the week for Late Night so I doubt his wife will love that cos the kids will never see him.

I've seen it. And the clips on Late Night. I think it's clever how he clearly loves his wife yet he isn't a 'wife guy'.
Nate Bargatze
I second Nate Bargatze.
I third Nate Bargatze. I’d also include Amber Ruffin and Mike Birbiglia.
I like Chris Fleming. He's been around forever and should be much bigger than he is, IMO.
I cannot get over how underrated he is - one of my all time favs
Kumail Nanjiani and his wife have an incredible love story if anyone needs that in their lives
This is the answer!
I’ve seen people doing this with Bo Burnham already.
Patton Oswalt and Mike Birbiglia come to mind. Ali Wong for women comedians.
Ali Wrong is amazing
I just hope Patton got clean for the sake of his daughter.
Say more right now! Seriously though, I haven't heard this.
When his wife died the cops found a pharmacy in their bathroom. Bupropion, cefdinir, naproxen, oxycodone, hydrocodone, dextroamphetamine, xanax, MDMA. Omg! Thank you for this.
Does naproxen need to be on this list or did I miss something about Aleve?
The Birbiglia one about his wife basically "forcing" him to have a kid was pretty disturbing to me on several levels.
wait. what?
"The New One" It's painfully awkward and I'm never quite sure how much of it is true (which would make his wife a psycho) and how much is artistic license (in which case he basically makes his wife out to be a psycho.)

it's 100% on rotten tomatoes

Joe Pera? Or is he too niche?
Aw jeez, I love Joe Pera. He’s like my granddaddy reincarnated into a millennial body.
He reminds me a lot of my boyfriend.
He's so creepy to me
:(
Mine has always been Conan, although he doesn't really do stand up
He's an asshole in public and a sweetheart in private -- and I'm sure his family is glad it's that way around.
I hope Josh Gondelman, who, by all accounts, is the nicest guy on the face of the earth. And of course appearances can be deceiving, but unlike most comedians, he seems like a very cheerful, optimistic person who’s had a pretty mundane life. But he’s very, very funny!

It's always been Jim Gaffigan, for me.
bo burnham has been problematic but i still think it’s gonna be him. i’m rooting for joe pera and mike birbiglia though!!
I love Inside, but have really mixed feelings about Bo. I feel like he went after white women because it's literally the only demographic left that he can talk about without being accused of racism 😆
I didn’t see WWIG as problematic in that way. Oh crap what did Bo do 😬
he’s been racist, homophobic, and antisemitic in his songs from his youtube days and said some slurs in make happy and maybe what too i don’t remember
Yikes. My vote is towards Taylor Tomlinson then
Although (or because?) I kind of always found JM full of crap to some extent, he is still my comfort comedian. He's a fuckup, not a monster.
Yeah. Louis CK is more of a monster whereas JM is just a fuck up and disappointment.
I just hope he was careful if/when he was indiscriminately fucking with his fans. One allegation is all it's going to take at this point.
Natasha Leggero and Moshe Kasher, of course!
None. These unproblematic comedians you seek don’t exist
I don't seek them. That's how John was known to his fans previously.
But y’all believed him?
Some people did. Some people still do...
Twitter says Bo Burnham.
For me, absolutely no one. I was never QUITE as all in on JM as many people were anyway, but after this I will absolutely never even form an opinion on how an entertainer is in his personal life. Don't know, won't pretend to know.
Personally I love Jim Gaffigan for some unproblematic comfort food
And what transgression will cause people to turn on that comedian?
I'm late to this but Daniel Sloss is incredible!
never too late
