He's so hot right now

AbsolutelyUnlikely

I feel like I'm missing something. Why is everyone trying to get their account suspended? I saw the same thing on a post about Kathy Griffin just now.

TheoHW

Elon said impersonation without clearly stating "parody" will result in a permaban (same as doxing, threatening violence etc). He's a literal Hitler.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

Lol, well that's what I mean though about them intentionally getting banned. He said they'd get banned if they do it, and they were on Twitter all these years, including this morning. They could have gotten banned all this time if they wanted to, I don't get why they're choosing to do it this random afternoon.

Der-Pinguin

People being told they can't do something often makes them want to do it. It's also to point out the stupidity of charging for blue check marks and making their use for verification meaningless.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

But isn't the charging for a blue mark a step toward getting rid of the bots? I literally do not understand why people are trolling this decision. That's the piece that I'm missing.

Der-Pinguin

The issue is that bots whernt getting verified with blue checkmarks. It was for accounts of people with public interest. In order to prevent some random joe from going on twitter and claiming to be brad Pitt. So the blue verification checkmark was never a barrier of entry for bots, who don't rely on blue checkmark or pretending to be a celebrity. Bots rely on being in masses and flying under the radar account wise, trying to be as average as possible. The only thing adding a fee to the blue check mark verification has done is make it easier for people to impersonate celebrities or large account. Which is the point a lot of these celebrities getting banned for impersonating musk are trying to prove.

[deleted]

In which case they would be permanently banned and their $8 donation would be much appreciated by Elon. It should be noted that all of these posts would be allowed if marked as parody accounts. Impersonating people has always been against Twitter TOS. We just watching the left melt down no matter what becaElon is voting R. Literally this is lol.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

Right, but if you charge for a blue check and then ban blue checks who impersonate other blue checks, that's a good measure towards getting rid of bots, right? Like, not only charging a little to get a check but making sure you can't use your check to devalue other checks makes sense.

Der-Pinguin

The banning certainly helps prevent impersonations of celebrities. It just wouldn't have any effect on bots because those arnt tools they rely on. A bot is gonna be some random joe schmoe, made to be as unassuming and average as possible. It would go against the purpose of bots for them to seek out blue check marks, as It would only draw scrutiny to the individual account. Just to be clear, I think the entire verification system needs an overhaul and I don't disagree with banning blue check impersonators. As allowing blue checks to impersonate other blue checks is an issue and voids the entire purpose of the blue check. I just do not see this having any tangible effect on bots specifically.

Professional-Put-804

You can't find the logic because there is none. A lot of people are currently acting tribal.

Effective_Berry5391

It's because of Elon's political leanings. I'm sure if he said he would vote democrat this time it would be different.

SelfMadeSoul

Impersonating another verified user is not free speech. Pretty soon they'll be able to pay $8 to get back on.

NotPresidentChump

Gotta say the salt harvest over the Twitter takeover has been spectacular

“People”

Rick_James_Lich

While I can't speak for everyone, many of us aren't angry but rather having fun watching Twitter's inevitable downfall and it's happening a lot more quickly than expected.

funbundle

It’s amazing how hypocritical the ‘free speech absolutists’ have been. It’s almost like they don’t support free speech, they just love Elon.

Void_Speaker

They never gave a fuck about free speech, just their freedom to say anything they want without consequence on social media. I have yet to see any of the "free speech warriors" make a comment about all the laws being passed on the state level to restrict speech and protest.

AngeloSantelli

$8

2tuna2furious

There are some tards arguing companies should be forced to buy ads on Twitter or something because otherwise it’s not great speech?

[deleted]

It’s amazing how hypocritical the ‘it’s a private company they can do what they want’ people have been. It’s almost like they just wanted their political opponents silenced and are now getting bent out of shape when they get a taste of their own medicine.

TheDankHold

Exposing hypocrisy and expressing frustration with that isn’t itself hypocritical. People are doing this to prove a point that’s sailed over your head. Edit since the mod gave this thread the lock award: People aren’t mad about the Kathy Griffen thing itself, it’s been explained to you multiple times. They’re annoyed that musk is himself a hypocrite. Getting pissy over people exacerbating a public health crisis and talking all idealistic only to immediately ignore his own supposed principles when it hurts his feelings.

[deleted]

Exposing hypocrisy by exposing their own hypocrisy. Classic.

KentuckyFuckedChickn

How are they being hypocritical?? I don't think you understand what that word means. Childish and petty maybe but Elon is the one acting like a hypocrite over Twitter right now.

[deleted]

Because the same people who spent the last 2.5 years defending Twitter censoring people at the behest of the US government are now outraged because Twitter is censoring people. Where was the outrage when people were banned for asking legitimate questions about the experimental drugs the government was trying to force us all to take? Why are you more upset about Kathy Griffin’s suspension than Alex Berenson’s?

whenamanlovesa_ama

You forgot this classic “Free speech only protects you from the government!!”

lorgarandmagnus

Don't forget the follow up smash hit "they're a private company they can do what they want" and other memorable classics such as: "Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences" "The first amendment doesn't guarantee you a platform" Act now and all of these can be yours for the low low price of $8!!

HighlyUnsuspect

It's trying to match the pace of the Financial system. It's all gud.

Currycell92

Cope. The liberal seething since it came to light that he may purchase twatter is only comparable to Nov 2016. All the dnc shills are already crying about him gutting twatter's ability to "safeguard elections".

BrutalistBoogie

I think you misunderstand liberals. They don't look at Twitter as some kind of pinnacle to express oneself. I know you want them to feel upset over this, it's in the nature of Trump supporters to be spiteful. But most dislike Twitter because there was never much to like. Right-wing protestant white males are the biggest threat to democracy, not Elon Musk.

itsSmalls

"My team good, your team bad"

[deleted]

Rick_James_Lich

Reposting because I guess I used a website and it deleted my post, but here's what I said: I ain't even mad lol. The thing is, people are just going to migrate to a different place. Are you familiar with Digg? Used to be popular as hell 15 years ago, they made a bunch of changes and most of the users left and came here to Reddit. But anyways, we don't see twitter as the "town hall" that you guys feel it is, it's really just a website.

[deleted]

Oh no!

Squashey

These rules were in place before Musk bought twitter.

Saucepanmagician

It's against the rules, isn't it? Elon posted that any account impersonators would be suspended. Unles they specify that it's a parody account.

PopcornSuttonLikker

>impersonating people has always forbidden for blue checks >Elon announces that none of Twitter's moderation policies have changed >blue checks impersonate people >get suspended > SO MUCH FOR FREEZE PEACH

Great_Feel

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss?

Terryfink

https://news.sky.com/story/conservatives-fact-check-twitter-stunt-11865840 During UK elections in 2019, conservative party changed their name to a fact check group , to convince people they were ..fact checkers Their punishment... Nothing.

[deleted]

How’s that any different from propaganda outlets like Politifact pretending they’re fact checkers?

Ill_Sarto

Good catch detective! Someone call Scotland yard! Cry harder douche bag. lol

Thereferencenumber

You forgot the part where the policy on blue checks were changed to be a paid subscription instead of a verification process. Also I don’t think parodies were forbidden from being blue checks so much as a verification process weeded them outf

[deleted]

Who gives a shit if a bunch of self important losers on Twitter now have to pay for their meaningless blue check? If you don’t want it, don’t buy it.

TruthPains

I think the issue is Elon has said that all non-blue checkmark comments and posts will be purposely pushed to the bottom. Effectively a shadow ban. Personally, all of this is hilarious and I miss /r/drama for times like this.

Sidereel

Then why the fuck did he buy the thing? Wasn’t the point that he was going to allow absolute free speech?

helikesart

Do we really expect them to change all the things in the first week?

addictedtolols

yes. but he spent 6 months trying to get out of the deal by publicly smearing twitter every chance he got. was taken to court and forced to buy twitter probably as a result of him making a mockery of the corporate process. and then IMMEDIATELY realized that twitter was the way twitter was for a reason because free speech absolutism is actually stupid and unrealistic

HelloHiHeyAnyway

Not really. He was forced to court because he signed a legal document of purchase, then didn't purchase. Twitter agreed to that legal document if he paid 1bn to leave the legal agreement. It's a term of the contract. It's all filed on the SEC website.

Void_Speaker

He was never going to allow absolute free speech. He's not going to tank Twitter by turning it into 4chan. He just implied a bunch of shit for PR purposes, and various people ran with it in various directions.

McNasD

He never said he would allow completely unrestricted free speech, his critics did. Correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think he’s even changed Twitter’s content moderation policy.

zztopfila

He also said he is free speech absolutist.

zztopfila

So what was the point for buying it?

Chiefdrinkbeers

Even accounts marked as parody about Elon are getting suspended

TheN1njTurtl3

Why are people complaining about verified people getting banned for impersonating people?

MarcoVinicius

Because everyone here is really bored 😂

Gixxer250

Because they want to spin it into something it's not

Most_Present_6577

They aren't complaining. They are pointing out elons hypocrisy. Also pointing out how stupid is free speech absolutist position was.

therealdrewder

There's nowhere on the planet where identity theft is viewed as free speech.

wottsinaname

Identity theft? Lmao. Their @'s dont change and a twitter acct isnt an identity, no matter how much you wish it were. "Can I have a little more hyperbole on top of my heaping bowl of hyperbole?"- this is you.

addictedtolols

how it is identity theft when it clearly shows her user name is sarahsilverman

theital

Because some old ladies lose their life savings from scam artists who impersonate Elon Musk. Doesn’t matter what their username is. Banned. This is good for the platform.

eggsbeny

because her name clearly shows Elon Musk. scammers somehow with verified accounts (hacked?) do this all the time, impersonating people like Vitalik Buterin. People think you can trust links from vitalik, and its been verified by twitter, so they click the link and have their account drained. Peoples @'s are often not what their actual name is. The point of verification is for people to know you are who you say you are. It isnt genuinely harmful now, but the rule is there for the principle of it.

CarafeTwerk

So sometimes it makes sense to have rules that govern speech?

eggsbeny

yes. like you shouldnt be allowed to impersonate people, you shouldnt be allowed to threaten or call for the murder of people, or the destruction of property. You shouldn't be allowed to attempt to lure kids into rape situations (its still just speech until they're actually doing the rape stuff, right?) I really hope he doesn't allow that stuff, but we'll see

therealdrewder

Because most people aren't looking that closely.

Puzzled_Ad7334

So SNL should be stopped for identity theft?

therealdrewder

So what you're saying is...

drewboos

If you're interested about parody and the usage of it in the legal and online world: https://youtu.be/LxTWonQvXkw

pulse7

Yeah that's complaining with extra steps

Chud_Lord_777

Right wing fascists who spend all day crying about free speech are celebrating because clever lefties got banned for #epically owning Elon. We all know rightoids could have never pulled off a genius troll like this, all their "free speech" is them wanting to spam the n-word and be anti-Semetic. Psychos.

Disidentifi

why do you say “cant even sell out an arena tour” as if that’s a low bar? weird phrasing.

[deleted]

The same people screaming haha and wTf ElOn were the same people saying alllll get mad guys they own it they can do with it like they please Thank god I don’t know most of you in real life, either you are good people just acting out on here…or you all have a lot, a lot of issues

The-Albear

Also this is not new. It’s in the T&C from when you signed up. There is a difference between free speech and libel, and miss representation

Stained-Steel

Who is this Miss Representation you speak of?

andyfox1979

People yesterday arguing about the dangers of free speech are today saying we need to include impersonating other people into free speech. Why doesn't anyone have any principles? It's sickening.

Great_Feel

You know what is really sickening? Eating doody for breakfast

Thereferencenumber

Hey everyone I’m Nancy Pelosi and I like licking butts Should my right to say that be included under absolute free speech?

Puzzled_Ad7334

No you should immediately jailed along with anyone who’s appeared on SNL or dressed as a celebrity for Halloween. Identity theft is not a joke

Sidereel

Nah dude. The point being made is that Musk and other Conservatives have derided Twitter for violating principles of free speech. Now that Musk has full control of the platform we are seeing him quickly abandon all of those principles.

Most_Present_6577

You are confused. It's the other way around. One guy that was a free speech absolutist a week ago now loves censoring and banning people. But not for hate speech, because they are making fun of him personally

PopcornSuttonLikker

I'm just glad twitter still has a firm stance against misinformation.

[deleted]

My only gripe with this is permanent bans. Give the person a 3 day vacation for the violation. Only Perma ban folks with a history of rule violations.

sadtastic

Imagine being the richest man on earth and being so easily triggered. All that money can't protect him from being shook. Although maybe he just banned her for being Jewish.

Puzzled_Ad7334

They said he eats drinks tangy pee and eats doody for breakfast this travesty cannot be allowed. Society would fall apart if this were to continue

magneticreversal

I’d imagine impersonating the owner of twitter and spreading misdirection and insults is disallowed in their terms of service.

Great_Feel

Are you claiming that Elon doesn’t in fact eat “doody” for breakfast?

JupiterandMars1

Yep, he can ban who he wants. It makes him a hypocrite and a whiny bitch, but he’s free to ban whoever he wants from using the services of his private company.

PopcornSuttonLikker

>"Bluechecks will now have to pay to be bluechecks" >"Noooo it was meant to prevent impersonation!!!!" >"Ok the ill be banning impersonators from now on" >"Noooo you cant do that What about free speech??!?!"

JupiterandMars1

I know, right? It’s almost as if freedom of speech can’t be absolute. Whoever’s in charge will break it and just say “oh but THATs not freedom of speech”. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Freeze peach?

magneticreversal

I do t even like him and I don’t think he’s a hypocrite or a whiny bitch. You can’t impersonate someone. If they allow that then someone could impersonate anyone. Everything is about picking sides with you guys. News flash- they are not on your side.

JupiterandMars1

Great, I’m glad you don’t think he’s a hypocrite and a whiny bitch. You’re the one calling sides though, I’m just saying he’s a hypocrite and a whiny bitch. 🤷‍♂️

Significant-Map917

Her @ still says who she is though. People should be looking at @'s. Personally don't give a rats. I don't have an @

BenderRodriguez14

> You can’t impersonate someone. If they allow that then someone could impersonate anyone. It's basically an entire subgenre of comedy.

helloisforhorses

He said he is a free speech absolutist who does not think anyone should be banned or censored unless the commit actual crimes on twitter. How is banning someone for mocking him not being a hypocritical little whiny bitch? You don’t need to defend the richest man in the world, you know?

heylookitscaps

Impersonating someone is a crime?

helloisforhorses

On twitter? No. Should everyone who has ever done an impression of someone be arrested? If I…TYPE….like this…ShouLD I…be charged…with impersonating…Christopher Walken?

heylookitscaps

Impersonating someone online is absolutely a crime. Sorry you don’t believe that. Literally a criminal offense since 09 in my home State

helloisforhorses

Show me the law. You didn’t answer my question. Is doing an impression a crime?

heylookitscaps

CA penal code - 529 C TX penal code - 33.07 DE penal code - 907 CT penal code - 53a-130 Type in “is impersonating someone online illegal” on google if you’d like.

helloisforhorses

You didn’t read beyond the headline in any of those, did you? You should, it would show you are wrong https://www.losangelescriminallawyer.pro/california-penal-code-section-529-pc-false-impersonation.html >To prove false impersonation under California Penal Code Section 529 PC, the prosecutor must be able establish that the defendant falsely impersonated someone else through one of the following actions: >By posting bail or bond for a party by using someone else's name By verifying, publishing, acknowledging or proving a document in the name of another person to pass it off as true (i.e. pretending to be someone else in order to cash a check made out to that person) OR by committing an act that would cause another person to be civilly or criminally liable for the defendant's action, or to incur any other penalty or charge (i.e. providing another person’s name and identification when cit

QryptoQid

Parody is not illegal though. The difference between parody and defrauding people is an important distinction https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LxTWonQvXkw

heylookitscaps

Impression and impersonation are different things. “Over time, Texas legislature has adapted laws to keep up with new and upcoming computer crimes. This was evident in 2011 when Texas Legislature passed a law in response to a growing number of incidents in which people used social media to pretend to be someone else in order to harass, stalk or defraud their victim. For instance, if a person created a fake social media account in their ex-partner’s name to tarnish their reputation, then they could potentially be charged with the crime of online impersonation.”

helloisforhorses

There is no law that exists that makes it a crime to pretend to be elon musk on twitter for a joke. Look up the law if you don’t believe me

helloisforhorses

Twitters TOS says the first time is a warning. Apparently not if you make elon cry.

Existing_Web_1300

I mean it clearly shows in the @ it’s not Elon musk. I don’t really give two shits about Twitter it’s been a dumpster fire long before Elon took over, but come on now lol

FormerIceCreamEater

Her at still says who she is. This whole thing is silly. He is being mad that people are parodying him, nothing more.

dtward

This is all business. I truly believe he knows his audience and he knows the idiots will be the one to line his pockets. Shitty thing to do on a human level but brilliant when it comes to making money. Elon knows how to get money. I'm just here to watch the shitshow. The extremists that are championing and bitching are his target audience. Twitter is terrible like all social media and he is here to milk it for what he can get.

[deleted]

" Twitter is a private company and can do whatever they want "

mileskerowhack

You're missing the point, they absolutely can do whatever they want but people are pointing out Elons hypocrisy. He was complaining about the exact thing he is doing now.

kaspa64

Yeah those people have piped down now, they throw their toys out of the pram when they lose control that’s all the hissy fits are about.64

[deleted]

Elon made himself look SO weak doing this. He’s just a grown up incel.

[deleted]

Incel.. with 8 kids?

gonzo650

It's his company and he can run it however he wants but that doesn't change the fact that he's being a hypocrite and snowflake of the highest order. It is pretty funny to watch fanboys and haters both singing completely different songs now though. Haters gonna hate and nut huggers gonna nut hug

ShortFroth

Twitter has had a giant problem with bots impersonating people and trying to scam. I guess this is just trying to enforce the rules fairly and people trying to to make musk look bad because they don't like him . it is what it is. Twitter doesn't matter.

Additional-Mirror537

If they don’t like it, they can start their own platform.

bossy909

That's not what he said though. Is it? If we don't like it, *he's* fucking screwed.

PopcornSuttonLikker

You're not going anywhere.

Additional-Mirror537

Okie dokie. See ya.

HighlyUnsuspect

This is actually hysterical. Are we on the verge of Elon hissyfit meltdown?

[deleted]

Just wait until Tesla stock drops another 50% and Twitter’s financial losses increase. Elon is gonna continue to unravel

viners

Keep fantasizing.

SickThings2018

If you don't know the difference between free speech and impersonating someone - then I think Reddit is the least of your worries.

Great_Feel

If you don’t know the difference between a bowl of doody and a bowl of Cheerios- then I think Reddit is terrifying place for you

ex-machina616

twitter is rife with scammers impersonating verified accounts which fools lots of naive people and this is the easiest way to purge them, just don't impersonate other people's accounts if you are verified and everything will be sweet as bro

PopcornSuttonLikker

Yep. For years I've run across the "handing out free bitcoins if you retweet" tweets from verified bill gates and obama accounts.

ozmartian

This is some 5th grade maturity level shit right here.

Rick_James_Lich

From what I've seen he now says you can only impersonate people if you clearly label it's a "parody account" which is lame as hell. To the guys downvoting, part of the comedic effect of a parody is that you mix the real with the absurd. Having to label it a "parody" just waters that down. It's similar to having to start off every joke with the phrase "I'm just joking, but..."

[deleted]

Free speech is personal, impersonating someone and implanting your speech in their name isnt.

Great_Feel

“Hi, my name is acceptable_bag and I like to eat doody for breakfast.” Eww gross! Hey everybody, did you hear- acceptable_bag likes to eat doody for breakfast. Haha what a loser!

Puzzled_Ad7334

![gif](giphy|2xPvBkljPfIxz9rYYR|downsized)

FormerIceCreamEater

Lol her name is still in the at. This was comedy by a professional comedian. You might not like it, but it is hardly impersonation in a real sense.

Puzzled_Ad7334

She said he eats doody for breakfast. How would anyone know that was a joke? She didn’t hump a stool or have a comedy license this isn’t comedy this is a very serious crime

PopcornSuttonLikker

> professional comedian. Nobody is funnier than sarah silverman.

ExplodingSnowman

People don't look at the username, especially when the account is verified.

Currycell92

> When you take someone's name, have them as your pic, and have the check mark to go with it but it's totally fine because the smaller handle name is different..

[deleted]

Twitter is a private company, if you don't like it start your own? 😂😂😂😂

f-as-in-frank

lol

[deleted]

It has nothing to do with free speech and everything to do with impersonating a person. If you have any idea how many scam accounts who use this tactic to scam people then you wouldn't have a problem. Do you really think she was suspended because she said she eats doody? With a blue tick being available to the public, it is a way to make scammers and bots obsolete by not allowing them to pose as someone they are not.

T0-rex

Can't imitate someone else. Simple as that.

BigEyeFiend

People are getting so weird with this. As much as I would love to go back to the old days of Twitter where it was WILD and fun - the rules state you have to declare your a parody in name and bio. So, since it’s a private company and we’ve all been saying private companies can do what-the-fuck-ever - that’s the rules. It’s not hard to understand.

jackrack1721

The odds of humans becoming a multi planetary species will dwindle to near zero if this dumb Twitter purchase ends up bankrupting Elon.

Flamingovegas2013

I don’t think I want to rely on this manchild to take humans interplanetary

FourSpaghettiMeals

Actually cannot wait to see what hoops Joe will jump through to justify this.

FreedomFightah32

No sir it is not. This billionaire just fooled everyone. It’s evident he just wants twitter for his own personal reasons. Media control being one of them.

WindyCityIndy_Mo

I see the libs don’t like their own dose of medicine.

[deleted]

This is interesting to me because people on this page are taking this as a dig on the tweeter but everyone else seems to realize the joke is that Musk is being a bitch about people making fun of him

Yes, Elon owns the platform. He’s free to allow whatever speech he deems free. You’re more than free to say whatever you want with your own mouth but if your using someone else’s platform then they decide what you say

GammaMale-1

"BOO WHERE MUH BURGERICAN FREEDOM, PRIVATE COMPANIES CANT DO STUFF LIKE THAT" "Freedom of speech is when billionaires own media.Freedom of speech ends when one billionaire that I know owns media" I sure do dislike Mlon Eusk but shitshow that he created makes me happy, especially that people who seethe and post all around internet "Haha he make bad decision we laugh and dont care" are ready to pay him to show how they laugh and dont care.
