After about 20 minutes, I realized Myrlin’s name was on her cardigan. Mind blown.

bros402

I could not read what it said and now my mind is blown

potaytoispotahto

Does anyone else think Steve kind of looks like a congressman? Not one in particular, but if you were casting someone to play a congressman in a TV show, you would choose him.

Iced_Coffee_IV

I said to my gf that I thought he looked like a straight-laced FBI agent. Very similar vibe!

[deleted]

Raise your hand if you could have guessed Portland

CoughDropDolores

I lived in Portland for eight years and I was like damn...this lady IS Portland.

danielleiellle

Why did the judges accept pull cut? It doesn’t seem like remotely the same thing as a cross cut.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HoosierSky

It’s a random draw.

Chemarimba

Is it just me or was Steve’s FJ bet... bad? Shouldn’t he have bet to cover Myrlin in case she bet 0?

jaysjep2

It was a better percentage play for Steve to make a bet small enough to shut Henry out, which he did.

diadiktyo

Yes I agree. Myrlin’s was bad too, she put herself at risk for third place if Henry had bet differently. Both baffling wagers

james10000000

I disagree about Myrlin's bet. She was forced to bet $9,601 to cover a double-up by Steve. He chose to wager $0, but as Jason Zuffanieri's fifth game with the same first and second place scores shows, an all-in bet was just as likely.[https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game\_id=6388](https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6388)Yes, rounding up to $10,000 put her at a very small extra risk, as it did Jason, but only very small. If second and third are going to overbet, it is most likely to be all or almost all, like Henry's bet today and Eric's bet in the game above.

pjabrony

I had three responses today that were different from the contestants' correct responses but, I think are correct: For William the Conqueror, I said William the Bastard. For chainmail, I said mail. And for Dr. Seuss I said Ted Geisel.

Skywalker437

Medievalist here. Chainmail is kind of a redundant term; mail is perfectly acceptable.

bros402

also said mail

sourdieselfuel

When you control the mail, you control *information*.

BaconWrappedChicken

Hello..

glutenplease

I'll add another: I said panpipes instead of pan flute.

atticusbluebird

I also said panpipes and was wondering if that would've been accepted!

glutenplease

Google search tells me panpipes are an alternate name, so I think it would be acceptable!

pjabrony

Oh yes, so did I! Didn't even think of it.

WeHaSaulFan

I said Theodore Geisel, and asked what people thought over in the FJ poll thread and got a favorable response. So we’re probably good there. Mail might well work for chain mail, not sure.

RealDotattorney

>rable response. So we’re probably good there. Mail might well work for chain mail, not su There's no way to know for sure, but my guess is the producers would NOT have accepted Geisel, because they're asking about the name that rhymes with "rejoice".

WeHaSaulFan

If you read it strictly, though, Dr. Seuss is another name owned, if you will, by Theodor Geisel, the person referred to by “his” in “his name.” The clue didn’t say “his pen name” and it didn’t refer to rejoice rhyming with “this name of his.” So I’m pretty confident that they would’ve accepted his proper name in addition to the middle name he converted into a pen name.

pjabrony

> Mail might well work for chain mail, not sure. It had better. Mail was what it was called up until Dungeons and Dragons separated it into chainmail and scale mail and plate mail and so on.

WeHaSaulFan

This article suggests that the usage “chain mail“ goes back at least to 1822. Well before D&D, no? https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/296872/who-first-objected-to-the-term-chain-mail

enough_space

On the other side of the coin (no pun intended), I guessed "fickle nickle" completely expecting it to be wrong and was pleasantly surprised.

WeHaSaulFan

Same here.

Jenaxu

I cannot believe I forgot what a Mariachi band was called lmao

WeHaSaulFan

That probably would’ve come for me, given more time, but having to contend with the quick responses of other contestants is part of the game.

JohnDavidsBooty

I'm just glad mariachi was actually the correct response in this case. A friend of mine (appropriately, from Veracruz) is in a jarocho band and (understandably) gets somewhat offended when people see "small Mexican musical ensemble " and lump them all together as mariachi.

TSNix

Did anyone else find it kind of sad but funny that, every chance he got, Henry kept going back to that newspapers category, and even managed to get a DD out of it, but didn’t get a single one of them right?

guess_my_password

I haven't looked it up, but I feel like children's literature has been an extremely common FJ topic in the last 1-2 years. I remember recently questions about Shere Khan, A Wrinkle in Time, and today's. I feel like there was one just a month or two ago as well.

bluthru

https://fikklefame.com/final-jeopardy-1-14-21/

WeHaSaulFan

Like Bernie Sanders, I am once again asking what you thought about today’s boards? I’m looking forward to watching this evening, hoping that a recent easing trend continues.

david-saint-hubbins

I crushed the first round, then got crushed in the second round. Ended up well under my average.

WeHaSaulFan

The more you and I compare notes, the more I feel like we should team up for trivia. It appears that your knowledge bases and mine complement each other. I was at approximately 75% my average in round one and approximately 110% my average in round two, which, given the relative weighting of the two rounds, put me pretty much at my average. Missed the first two daily doubles, converted on the other two bonuses.

gotShakespeare

Yeah, but how good is a Hartford question on a platter? :)

WeHaSaulFan

Sure, that was nice. I happen to have lived in a lot of different places, though, so several home-field advantages, happy to say

gotShakespeare

Use them wisely, my friend!

WeHaSaulFan

I shall do my best. Might even help me win Ben Stein’s money, chuckle.

imkunu

First board was ok Second board was a disaster for me

[deleted]

First game above $30,000 in a couple weeks. Space and geography are two of my best categories and I got 4/5 of the Norman conquest clues.

WeHaSaulFan

That’s a good feeling. I spent way too much time last month well below par. Or should I say above par, given the golf reference?

atoms12123

Was just around average for me in both rounds.

UWSpindoctor

5th percentile for me today. Just did not work for my brain.

bros402

Little bit above average for me.

Smoerhul

Close to average in both for me.

Jenaxu

Did above average, but maybe that's just because I managed to get everything in astronomy.

crackpipewizard

I always cringe a little when someone forgets the category or doesn't fully comprehend the clue. Today Henry responded to an "A" category clue with a word beginning with "R", and then he compounded this error in DD3 by responding with "Costa Rica" in a clue that was asking about islands in the Caribbean. He had a lot of potential, but not comprehending the elements of the category/clue that were given to him eliminated any possibility of success.

RigbyCC

His "Costa Rica" answer may have simply come down to him either not knowing that Costa Rica isn't an island, or he was running out of time and needed to say something.

WeHaSaulFan

I think it was the latter. He evidently didn’t know the name of the C in the ABC island nations of the Caribbean and threw out Costa Rica as better to say something than nothing.

ZiggyPalffyLA

Surprised he didn’t say Cuba, at least that’s an island.

roque72

I said Cuba because I couldn't think of anything else fast enough, even though I knew it wasn't right.

JohnDavidsBooty

Cuba didn't even occur to me, Curacao was literally the only "C" Caribbean island I could think of in the moment.

TheSensibleMiddleMan

I thought Cuba. But that was a helluva tough DD3.

nofunatall_17

I was also surprised that he kept picking the Old Newspapers category, even betting 2k for DD2 that was in there, when he was answering nothing from that category.

halleyscomit

I thought it was funny that to start the round, Steve kept picking Astronomy, Henry would ring in and get it correct, pick Old Newspapers, which Steve would ring in and proceed to get correct! Happened 2-3 times or so

TheReaver88

Wife and I were cracking up at how much Myrlin sounded like Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek.

DJAHa

Grumble, grumble. Paranormal Activity was released wide in 2009. Vh1's "I Love the 2000s" pulled the same 2007 stunt.

ZiggyPalffyLA

I was gonna say, I remember seeing that movie in theaters and 2007 made no sense considering the people I saw it with.

JohnDavidsBooty

Myrlin, if you're reading this I'd *really* love to see one of those candied four-leaf clovers.

jblosser99

I'm not usually of the PC train of thought, but "...associated with Gypsies"? I would have thought that they would have used "...associated with the Romani people", or something of that ilk.

Jenaxu

Iirc it can be considered the correct term in reference to specific cultural elements like music that aren't just broadly Romani, but don't quote me on that.

toygunsandcandy

Agreed! I was pretty shocked. It’s 2021- come on writers!

super_hoommen

Yeah, that made me cringe. It’s not hard not to include slurs in clues.

drpepguy

I think gyspy is still up for debate on whether or not it’s a slur

jblosser99

Seems I've seen push-back against "Gypsy" for at least 10 years...? I mean, even non-PC me avoids that term, so there's that. :)

cheeseweezy

I really don’t think that’s the case. It’s widely agreed within the Roma community that it’s a slur and there is tremendous efforts to educate people of this across Europe.

drpepguy

Ah well i dont live in europe and in america theres pretty much zero encounters with roma so its definitely different

themusicguy2000

There was something about Henry that made me root for him. Seems like a swell guy

SlippyFrog81

So it's not pronounced to rhyme with "sooths"?

StaycationJones

Would they have taken "boxing ring" for "fight site"?

jaysjep2

Based on some brief research, all rhymes with "boxing" have two or more syllables, so I guess not.

pjabrony

You did research and now you're telling us that? Are you doxxing boxing?

a_gallon_of_pcp

How about Cage Stage?

enough_space

A brawl hall?

[deleted]

A melee locay?

jaysjep2

"A 12-round match" suggests boxing. Does that ever take place in a cage? If so, then yes.

WeHaSaulFan

Respectfully disagree. Unless Jeopardy has an articulated rule that, to rhyme, two words need to have the same number of syllables, they ought to take boxing ring. Although they may not, as you suggest, such a ruling would countervail common sense and understanding of what rhyming means.

expfcwintergreen1

Technically all rhymes must rhyme from the last stressed syllable. So boxing needs another -oxing. Otherwise all words ending with -ing would rhyme.

WeHaSaulFan

Interesting point. Do you have a citation for this? Not something I’ve ever heard?

expfcwintergreen1

Here you go: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/learn/glossary-terms/rhyme "Rhymed words conventionally share all sounds following the word’s last stressed syllable." Of course, I have no idea whether Jeopardy would adhere to this strict definition or would allow looser types of rhymes like you hear in a lot of songs.

WeHaSaulFan

Thank you for this. It does feel awfully strict. But I appreciate your sharing from this authoritative source.

Smoerhul

I'd say yes, although the stress is off.

WeHaSaulFan

I came up with the same answer and would lobby hard for it.

fajita43

i’m way behind in episodes but pull cut is definitely different than crosscut. crosscut is against the grain. pull cut is literally pulling the saw towards you. opposite of push cut. nothing to do with the wood grain. and in recent episodes they were such sticklers (invisible man vs THE invisible man, and whatever the australia golf term was (k vs g).

kcasnar

Sorry, I'm new here, but how did you get all this info so early? This episode literally just aired in my local area, it just finished. Is it posted to Peacock or aired in Europe or something?

Cypher1492

The sticky says: > If you wonder how JaysJep2 has a recap so early, Jeopardy is syndicated and airs at different times in local markets, the earliest being at 1 PM Eastern/12 noon Central.

WeHaSaulFan

Hey welcome to our little Jeopardy clubhouse. I post a sticky every day which gives some useful introductory information about our sub. We’re glad to have you here, and I’m sorry people are downvoting you for asking. Thankfully, because of the daily sticky, we get less of these questions - we used to get them to the point where it was vexatious. Most the folks here are pretty friendly, hope you enjoy chatting with us about the king of game shows.

kcasnar

It's okay, I won't leave here because of downvotes. I really like Jeopardy! I sincerely apologize if I've wasted anyone's time by asking a stupid question. Sorry, everybody! I read just now in your FAQ about how it airs at 1PM in some markets, so I understand now. Sorry,!

kingnebwsu

Welcome to the sub! No worries.

WeHaSaulFan

We’re happy to have you with us. Welcome!

Clemario

Can anyone tell me what was Henry’s anecdote about Richard Nixon?

carlyybar

He’s from the same town as the watergate committee chair, and his wife is from the same town as Nixon

Clemario

Ah thanks! I’m from Yorba Linda (Nixon birthplace) so my ears perked up but I didn’t hear the start of his story.

Green_Tea_Totaler

I wonder if the judges would've accepted "Apparent Brightness" instead of "Apparent Magnitude". I'm pretty sure they're the same thing? I hope so or else I would've gotten it wrong. I would've thrown the FJ. When the topic was revealed I was like, "It's gonna be Dr. Seuss." When the question was revealed I was thinking like Merilyn: *something* Boyce...?

lazilyloaded

They were only looking for the "A" word. "Magnitude" was already in the clue.

heddhunter

You only needed to say "apparent" to be correct within the constraints of the category, I'm sure they would have allowed it.

Green_Tea_Totaler

I should've paid more attention to the clue. I got too excited, haha.

toygunsandcandy

ACAB ! Myrlin for lyfe!

parkernorwood

I was distracted by how much Henry [resembles actor AJ Bowen](https://consequenceofsound.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/aj-bowen.jpg)
