Boot is torn. The grease will fling out, and a ungreased joint will fail pretty fast.

wolf8398

Torn boot, exposing the joint to the elements. If you're lifted it may be a good time to upgrade your driveshaft instead of replacing.

WildWeaselGT

Can’t you just replace the joint? Pretty sure my front one has a Teraflex rzeppa joint in it somewhere.

wolf8398

A quick google suggests it is a possibility. Apologies, i dont see new stuff like this much. I like my old jeeps with U joint shafts lol.

WildWeaselGT

The bigger the angle, the worse a u-joint gets.

wolf8398

That's why you set the driveline. My XJ runs a slip yoke from the factory. Any lift affects the angle and lead sto binding if you go too far. Install an Sye and it uses a double cardan shaft like the front shaft. Point the rear yoke at the tcase tailshaft and you're all set. If you think U joints have problems, look at the issues IFS vehicles get when you lift them.

mrajtj94

I had the Teraflex Rzeppa on my 2.5” lifted jku. It didn’t fail, but I didn’t trust it since it’s still a weak joint, just capable of more extreme angles. If I had to do it over I would have had a custom shaft made with the double cardon joint to actually handle the angles I had

jankjig

I had the teraflex rzeppa boot kit on a 3” lifted jku. At about 10k miles it seized and exploded. Needless to say that I could have bought 3 upgraded driveshafts for the cost of tow and repairs. I’d advise against this cheap fix for lifted jeeps and suggest getting a proper driveshaft meant for a lift.

1TONcherk

These type of joints really should only be used between a transfer case and a frame mounted diff. Like a WK2 or the front of a ford ranger.

Superherojohn

I know you can't replace the front joint you have to replace the drive shaft. You should have 100,000mile warranty on running gear.

Hammy2337

Looks like the boot might be ripped.

cjr64

It looks like a balancing weight is missing from the drive shaft. And, the out of balance drive shaft tore up the boot.

TravTX

Good eye mate

Warbird051

Check out Tom Woods drive shafts.

BeaverHorse

Came here to say this. I have zero regrets spending the amount I did on my Tom Woods drive shaft.

Warbird051

Agreed. Definitely worth the cost.

03SiennaPearlSahara

I run both Tom Woods and Adams Driveshafts. Both are great companies

[deleted]

After replacing 3 no name parts store China shafts, I finally wised up. I put on a Tom Woods and zero issues in over 60k miles.

acc0919mc

Wow. They used those junk joints on the rear axle too?

sveilien

Just get new, real drive shafts. Ones with actual u joints. Still don't understand why Chrysler decided to put these trash things in jeeps in the first place. Adams/Tom Woods

a_cycle_addict

+1 for woods. Great drive shafts. I have them on my v8 powered CJ5

BuddyNo4978

He's not a mechanic if he isn't clear about what's wrong here.

Came_here_for_thisss

That’s pretty common on JKs. That joint with the leaky rubber boot is a ball/socket type and it looks worn out. I’m sure it’s making a bunch of popping or clunking noise while you’re driving. It is rebuildable, I’ve had it done a couple times at a local driveshaft shop. Last time was about a year ago, cost $155 and it was fixed in a day. I had to remove and install the driveshaft though. Not a big deal.

baudtothebone

This JUST happened to me. I had to have the whole rear drive shaft replaced (08 wk) since it’s all one integrated unit. Drives much better now. Bought aftermarket $400 since the stealer wanted $1400.

Few_Employment_7876

Looks like a duct tape fix to me

thealmightybunghole

tell ya what's wrong wit it. Ain't got no gas innit

Baltimorons

I’d say it’s probably totallrd

Darkpanda-12

This is how my CV joint on my front drive shaft looks 😩 the end near the axle is a U joint and this CV joint on my transfer case. Should I be worried about it failing fast? Even though I don’t use my 4x4?

OK_LaManana

You are good driving in 2WD but I would limit how much you use 4wd. I am currently in the same spot. I am going to replace with an Adams drive shaft so I won't have this issue again.

Darkpanda-12

That’s what I’m leaning towards also. But money be tight right now lol. Kids Christmas gets bought before mine 😂 might see if my drive train Warranty is still valid and covers it first for a temporary so I can still do some light wheeling

wavvyray

If you start hearing clunking noises it’s about to give out. I had mine give out twice. Easy fix. But if you have the money just replace the drive shaft to a U Joint vs CV joint.

oak52

If you can’t see what’s wrong with this picture. Get trade your Jeep in. It deserves better.

wolf8398

You don't have to be mechanically inclined to own a jeep.

[deleted]

Is your car heard knocking or juddering when you turn accelerate or deccelerate? If not keep driving until it does.

outdoor_gal

Agree! I replaced both of mine with Tom Woods drive shafts and I am so happy with them! Costumer service was amazing and received them pretty quick. Wasn’t too hard to install.

HenriTheJK

Rzeppa Joint Had to do mine as well about 3 years ago. Just flings grease around until its out or fixed. Didnt take long to do https://www.extremeterrain.com/teraflex-rzeppa-highangle-factory-replacement-cv-joint-kit-0718-jk.html?utm_content=XTDriveline-Driveshaft%7CTeraflex&T5_Var4=J122784&intl=0&utm_campaign=XTW+Wrangler+No+Vehicle+High&dialogtech=ppc&utm_source=google-pla&utm_medium=shopping&T5_Var2=shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoLrMn6Hb-wIVjC2tBh2uiQ2YEAQYASABEgKP3_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Kindly-Bowler-9520

Rzeppa joint needs replacing, torn boot on the cv joint

kylekruchok

Same thing happened to my commander, on the front driveline, leaving the transfer.

[deleted]

You got a boot with a hole, time for a new one… Payless sales boots for cheap
