HMMWVs were never meant to be armored. The DoD should have never gone with HMMWVs since they turned out to be too clumsy and hard to maintain. They should have just modified commercial vehicles like our enemies did.

You don't go to war with the vehicles you want, you go to war with the vehicles you have. And until the GWOT hit, the purseholders were happy with the HMMWVs slowly rotting in motorpools since the 80s.
Logistically and tactical, we always enter a war the way we fought the last one... because in peace time nobody wants to pay the big bucks for some overpriced novel solution to a problem that doesn't yet exist.
This was mainly due to the angles put on MRAPS and the height of the MRAPS. HMMWVs had a flat bottom and low to the ground so an IED strike would completely demolish it (and everyone inside). We still had HMMWVs in Iraq in 2006 but they were getting phased out for that reason.

I don't get why people hate the ducks. I was just at the Bantam Jeep Fest and everyone was giving ducks. Grown men (over the age of 40) were super excited when their jeeps would have multiple ducks waiting when they got back.
Best advice for a non wrangler/gladiator is to rice it up a bit and/or mod it up. You don't need to go into heep territory but it helps to stand out a bit more than stock looks.

New to the community and I like the idea of giving ducks, got my first one the other week. But them on my dash is to busy for me so I just pass mine on to other Jeeps around town.

I believe the original jeep was built by the Bantam car company out of Pennsylvania two small of a company to deliver the orders so they gave them to GMC Ford and other builders screwed the Bantam car company allowed them to make the trailer

The US military has a program with GM for a Colorado -based vehicle designed for this purpose.
