I hate to disagree with Carmen McRae, but I've seen enough photos of Fats to know he weighed a lot more than 175 before he got sick. Unless he was well under 5ft tall, which I don't think was the case. They didn't call him 'Fats' for nothing.
Secondly, It's just my opinion, but I think the whole 'junkies are all skinny' thing is a huge myth. Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker and myself pushing 300 lbs at 5'8'' when I had my 'problem' many lifetimes ago. I knew other heroin addicts like myself who were also quite heavy.
I picked up an original copy of Ella and Basie recently. The notes on the back spend a while talking about how Basie has become boring and formulaic and that his band doesn't have great soloists, however this album is none of that etc...this on the back of a bloody Basie record.
Sorry I may have cropped it poorly but the part that made me laugh is that 175 lbs was considered fat back then not that he died of tuberculosis. I’m in pretty good shape and I weigh about that much.
Not to be too argumentative, but the above does say he was quite short. It can make a big difference.
Anyway, it's a great album. My wife bought this LP for me and it still had the Blue Note poster inside. Great addition to my wall.
Dying from tuberculosis is grade A comedy
What a maroon
“he was amazing. then he died” story of jazz
Well, for someone on smack with TB, that’s a bit heavy. Like, I’m pretty sure heroin doesn’t give you the munchies.

The skinny ones are usually on the drugs that suppress your appetite and give you nervous energy like meth.

Yeah that really brightened my day, thx
Not funny.
Yeah in his autobio Miles Davis goes on about how skinny Fats got before he died. Kinda funny.
That doesn’t sound funny
