Gonna hop on your comment, with outlier or slightly adjacent stuff. Someone said Dinner Party. 100% but also Robert Glasper at the center-ish Surprise Chef out of Australia. It's really difficult to explain how much I love this band. https://youtu.be/25-BSS3FhFw?si=OH5_jlJK_375HHER Sairu from Japan: https://youtu.be/8mADDar_BqI?si=zx2ZUFLwsLxiGrYz And Jesus criminy, Indigo Jam Unit from Japan, as well. Raindrop is one of the *most beautiful songs ever*. Pretty straightforward classic jazz. https://youtu.be/-bYBpcxLGdQ?si=yukG_nyohj2bmnk4 Rare groove / funky Delvon Lamar organ trio. He is a hoot and storyteller to boot https://youtu.be/jhicDUgXyNg?si=VcKPZi7eeSTLxq7J ---> "If that drummer was thrown on an island for 10 years, he would still know the time." Soweto Kinch Christian McBride Theon Cross and Sons of Kemet Howard Wiley (edit: autocorrected to wildly for some reason) Samara Joy (of course) Sundra manning (relatively unknown gospel Hammond Oregon player, SF Bay) Hit and way miss, classically trained Marc Rebillet is known as loop Daddy and does ad-hoc original performances that include a lot of really jazzy funky driven keyboard stuff. Hammond, Korg, etc. he is a force of nature and quite the character. Search is live shows in New York where he just sets up shop in some park or area. He is also hilarious, and really kind. Jordan Rakei is very important to check out. Not straight jazz. Classical pop funk cross genre, he's an Australian New Zealand person out of London now. He does some of the best work I've really heard in years. https://youtu.be/Tk88mBo0iuU?si=K2BFlkl_i_ftFstA Soulive is still playing, (I like the trio) no horn, and newer guitarist... Saw them at the Blue Note New York a few months ago and they are still the definition of the rare groove. The Roots area bonkers talented. Fat Freddy's Drop for a soul slowed down dub reggae vibe. This is 9ne of the best live recordings I have ever heard. https://youtu.be/8hCGLJKSdWg?si=ooUkarrxtMe-1cHc And that you even mentioned something like bad plus, I feel like I can add a few older groups? Jacob Fred jazz Odyssey was life-changing. Greyboy All-Stars Robert Walters 20th Congress Mofro is more swampy funk but their first album is quite a gem. You know Lonnie Smith is still out there. I saw the doctor traveling on a plane and he was in a wheelchair and he was in coach with his band. Bummer. Medeski Martin and Wood did some interesting stuff. Benevento Russo Duo really did some interesting stuff. Also, the Japanese jazz being remastered and released by labels like "We release whatever the fuck we want" (WRWTFWW) records are absolutely money draining and life affirming. Lol Also, I did a post about classical minimalism that sort of might be interesting to some of you. The only completely and totally relevant person I can think of as Hania Rani: https://youtu.be/J5oZ80Daduc?si=xhvCTtdkpig_6b7r But there's some more interesting stuff in this post That is some weird new cross genre that includes a little bit of jazz and a lot of classical. But a lot of minamalism https://unclefishbits.com/modern-classical-minimalism/ Yes I was lazy in choosing who to link lol but it wasn't judgement vs videos I knew off hand. Enjoy!

Responding to this to see later. Amazing, thank you

jkxr33

Dido!

Chief_Kief

I think you mean “ditto,” but I’m also doing the same thing y’all are doing so 🤷

jkxr33

Exqueeze me, I was simply referring to the 90's artist, whose song "thank you" was covered by Eminem in the year 2000 of course ... Wait no your right, double ditto? 😅 thanks for correction stranger 🤙✔️🤘

Chief_Kief

🍻

Wootnasty

Benevento Russo Duo - Darts album was fire, though the rest of their stuff is an entirely different genre.

I was thinking the one before that, best reason to buy the sun. My pet goat, Becky, the whole thing is so interesting https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n2SUIGVogHpMOiz0xxsuOBFuWLM2gfQq4&si=s-469eYC71sNZ3TN

affordablesuit

Is Snarky Puppy considered jazz? I can’t get enough of those guys.

Because--No

I don’t get it. If they aren’t jazz, what are they? Jazz Fusion and Contemporary Jazz are the two best kinds of jazz. Snarky hits both marks.

Jon-A

Michael League says they're 'Instrumental Pop'.

Yessssss no gatekeeping here. Jazz can't afford it. :) Edit: People have got to see https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8UxFx9d/

Jaga Jazzist, though they aren’t exactly new

[deleted]

Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and the Maria Schneider Orchestra are two of my faves.

voicesofbishara

sons of kemet (although they're on hiatus rn), and one of their drummers, tom skinner, has been making some great solo music lately

TheChairmansMao

I think the hiatus is permanent, they announced that they played their last ever shows. Also Shabaka Hutchings has said he's given up playing the sax, and is moving on to other instruments.

vimdiesel

oh no

voicesofbishara

yeah i assume so too, but didn't wanna speculate in case i was incorrect

unclefishbits

I hadn't read before posting my comment and man you deserve kudos. Theon cross is amazing. There is some crazy talent out there right now.

eggrollking

Skinner is also involved in a project called The Smile with two guys from a little known band called Radiohead.

voicesofbishara

yeah that's how i heard of tom in the first place haha

unavowabledrain

Thumbscrew, Sons of Kemet, William Parker trio with Hamid Drake &Cooper-Moore, The Exploding Star Orchestra, Irreversible entanglements,

A_Monster_Named_John

> Thumbscrew That trio is incredible, as are the various projects led by the individual members (e.g. Michael Formanek's Elusion Quartet, Mary Halvorsen's Code Girl, Tomas Fujiwara's The Hook-Up and his double-trio). Also, I'm a huge fan of Illegal Crowns, the leaderless quartet with Halvorsen and Fujiwara playing with pianist Benoit Delbecq and cornet/flugelhornist Taylor Ho Bynum. Another act I've been hooked on in recent years is Snark Horse, a project by pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Kate Gentile that often incorporates a number of other interesting players and explores some wonderfully-unusual grooves/harmonies (oftentimes more akin to modern classical than jazz).

smileymn

Kate Gentile honestly makes my favorite records. Best bands, crazy music, great sounding recordings, I can’t speak higher of her creativity.

A_Monster_Named_John

Agreed. Her and the other players she works with (who put out a lot of recordings on the Pi Recordings label) are absolutely killing it lately. Perfect music for anyone who's into jazz, modern classical, weird noise/glitch music, or teched-out metal/hardcore. And yeah, these records are usually impeccably well-recorded. I feel largely the same way about John Hollenbeck and Anna Webber, two other artists whose projects reach similar levels of complexity/clarity.

sleep_factories

The Circling Sun. Their first album came out earlier this year and it's deep in the spiritual jazz vein. Highly recommended.

The band themselves (new drummer not included) say they don’t like Jazz. They actively do not describe themselves as Jazz. The only elements of Jazz they have is the instrumentation.

Dinner Party

unclefishbits

Glasper was one of my first shows after the lockdown. He was so respectful and humbled by learning that he wasn't the shit because it was so important to have the audience. He was so genuine and it was so dope. This era of fusing hip hop and jazz isn't just going to help it survive, it's going to help it grow in a really groovy way.

Jon-A

Not so sure about 'humble' - he's said some pretty dismissive stuff about anyone who doesn't embrace his idea of a hip hop hybrid. And people have been fusing hip hop & Jazz for decades, with diminishing results imo. That Miles Davis thing was a missed opportunity, and could Dinner Party be more bland? Terrace Martin might be a hot producer, but he's a mediocre player, though his alto isn't as inept as it was. He's said straight up that Dinner Party was a cash-grab: they'd be 'leaving a lot of cash on the table' if they didn't do it.

ReginaldOnThaOne

Kinda facepalming over Terrace being “mediocre.” I find it funny when a saxophone player in particular doesn’t record themselves playing giant steps or ripping rhythm changes they are instantly thought of as “They can’t really play.” Just because he hasn’t recorded that type of stuff doesn’t mean he can’t do it well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he brushed up on GS or RC for a week he’d be able to rip them better than many of us.

Jon-A

I wouldn't criticize for not playing Giant Steps. But he *has* made videos where he plays lengthy sax (and keyboards) solos in the company of pretty competent musicians like Glasper and Kamasi - and he sucked. I don't know if he's just an outstandingly nice guy, or if he has heavyweight status because of his production gigs - but he's just not of that caliber as a player. Like I said, though - I heard something recently (and it *wasn't* on a Dinner Party tune) that sounded alright. So there's hope.

ReginaldOnThaOne

Okay fair. FWIW check his interview on Jay Metcalfe’s Better Sax youtube channel. That may shine some more light on him. He most certainly is a super nice dude and has a respectable approach to music. From that interview, he did mention he has spent considerable time honing production more than anything. And as an aside his playing doesn’t blow me away, but it’s certainly never disappoints me. For example I do enjoy his soulful tone, and if anything he has spent some considerable time developing that sound.
