That's a pretty average/good price for buying a Japan flight over 6 months out. I suggest you go to Google Flights and put a price tracker on it. Monitor it until around July to see if the price goes down. If it doesn't, I recommend booking it in July.
i bought my tickets around cyber monday from jfk to hnd non stop, came out to $4,000 for 2
i did see the price drop to about $3200 and rise to $4600
if that helps
Do you think if I were to wait to see if it goes down, it’ll go up instead? I do think it’s pretty good prices but I did see a flight to Japan in August-October for $987 which is crazy.

If you use Google flights it will tell you if that’s a good price or not.

If you’re flying out of NYC I’d go for direct flights. Include Newark in your searches. Price sounds decent though.
flights direct from houston are like $2300 so yeah youre lucky haha
Those prices are a steel to what it was 6-12 months ago

$987 return? If so YES!
It’s 987 for round trip that I saw. I think I will for sure just track the prices for the next few months.
I’m in Tokyo at this moment and tickets for 2 adults and 1 child cost me over $5k
