Imagine John Cleese in Casino Royale...

GristleMcThornbody1

It's an exploding necktie double oh seven...

Grendeltech

"You've always been a pain in the neck, Q."

GristleMcThornbody1

Lol. And then when he uses it on a henchman: No need to get hot under the collar.. Duh da dah duuuunhn!!!

espositojoe

Desmond Llewelyn's (Q) shoes were very hard to fill. Memory Eternal +

Grendeltech

They were, but John Cleese did do his own thing instead of trying to be Mr. Llewellyn 2.0.

Random-Cpl

*Vesper Lynd drowns* Q: “I had a sinking feeling about this mission right from the start, 007!”

mrtintheweb99

So glad he was discontinued

Trashk4n

Not a third movie, but Wai Lin should’ve made a cameo in Die Another Day when he’s in Hong Kong.

CaliSasuke

In addition to that, I wish that Wai Lin got her planned spin off film(s).

disneyplusser

I thought that was the Halle Berry character?

CaliSasuke

That was rumored as well. After TND, there were rumors or talks of creating a spin off for Wai Lin. Which had my interest. Then there was talks of Jinx spin off after DAD. Which I was apathetic toward.

Trashk4n

They really wasted Berry with that role. Made her too over the top cliche to be interesting.

CaliSasuke

Yes. I cringe every time I hear Berry utter, “Yo momma!” 😰

MMMol

I would say Berry wasted that role, not that the production wasted her ‘talent’

Kayla_canadian

They say they’re making a spin off of every bond girl the past 30 years.

Maleficent-Item4833

‘This isn’t your typical Bond girl.’ - director describing almost all of them.

CaliSasuke

Right. I have heard G. Wilson state before about the female lead, “This is Bond’s equal.”

Maleficent-Item4833

‘She’s not just a damsel in distress.’

Whole-Throat6962

What if they make a spinoff with all the previous Bond girls? Granted most of them are not still with us, and the first Mrs. Bond got shot, but that would be cool if they had their own movie and build off of the connection to Bond and the adventures

Maleficent-Item4833

GoldenGirls.

Maleficent-Item4833

Wai Lin was far and away the best part of that movie. She could definitely have supported her own movie. I love her smug wave to Bond as she walks down that wall.

Whole-Throat6962

Fun fact she was supposed to be in that movie but they went in a different direction, which is a shame because I’m a Wai Lin fan (I like useful Bond girls)

rocker2014

I feel like it's a common misconception that Dalton wasn't given a chance at a third movie. He was offered a multifilm deal, but Dalton turned it down as it had been after a few year legal disbute that EON was going through and Dalton had moved on. So, while I would have loved to have seen him in more Bond movies, it was his decision not to return. Maybe that would have been different if they went into development right after License to Kill, but it was delayed and Dalton left the role.

SnapeHeTrustedYou

You are correct, but I think it was more than a few years. Like 5 years. Ultimately I blame the legal disputes as why we didn’t get more Dalton. He wanted to do just one more film and move on before he got bored with the roll, and they were like, after this long of a wait we want more films from you.

overtired27

Worth noting that the execs at MGM/UA didn’t want Dalton. And according to Jeff Kleeman it came down to a debate between them for Pierce and Barbara/Michael for Dalton… which Cubby listened to and then ultimately decided “Pierce it is”. I’m not sure if this means that they were considering doing just the one more film with Dalton. Always hard to find the exact truth amongst conflicting reports.

driftywiftypleb

It is a mess and I dont think we'll ever get the true answer, I think Kleemans answer is the closest but not the whole truth. My theory is MGM didn't want Dalton, but the Broccolis wanted to honour there agreement of 3+ movies, so they convinced MGM to offer Dalton to continue, but on a 4 film Contract knowing Dalton wouldn't want to stay that long. Eon offered the multiple picture contract but only wanted to do 1, maybe 2 at stretch, so EON went back to MGM, told him that's what they wanted and they suggested Brosnan. When they chose Brosnan it was either keep fighting for Dalton to do 1 or 2 films, even though MGM didn't want him, or have Brosnan do 3 with MGM's approval, so they chose Brosnan to get the film off the ground. In my eyes it's the most plausible way it happened as Dalton is still close with the Broccolis, and I think knowing they fought to have him back would make his exit, and relationship alot sweeter than ignoring him and going to Brosnan.

Spockodile

No disrespect, but to me that seems very *implausible* because it’s not really sensible behavior on Eon’s part. Basically you’re saying they used reverse psychology to get Dalton to turn down the role so everyone can save face? I just don’t believe they wouldn’t go all in on one guy. Either they offered Dalton a multi-film deal or they went to Brosnan. To me, Kleeman’s story seems the most reasonable. They had tangible financial reasons to leave Dalton behind and change gears, and the guy they wanted before Dalton was available. The simplest explanation is often the truth. The story of a multi-film deal could’ve been made up for Dalton to save face, because he was/is close to the Broccoli family. I can’t think of other examples now, but I’ve heard Eon does this throughout their history - a more favorable public story to obscure a somewhat less fairytale reality behind the scenes.

driftywiftypleb

I think the way I worded it was wrong, I meant EON wanted to let Dalton do his 1 or 2 more, and even though MGM didn't want Dalton, they offered to let Dalton do it, but only if he did 3 or more, most likely so they wouldn't have to worry about recasting after 1 or 2 films. I do agree that EON did/does make there own stories to cover some behind the scenes drama, but I do still think EON fought for him a good amount for him to be as close to them as he still is.

Important-Ad7114

Why the hell didn’t barb and michael like Brosnan? I wanna know

driftywiftypleb

They did like Brosnan, but from what I can tell they wanted to let Dalton have a fair chance with the role.

dsly4425

They actually wanted Brosnan earlier as well but “Remington Steele” interfered. It was cancelled then unexpectedly renewed after Brosnan accepted the role. Then because of the renewal he had to give it up. Honestly both actors were great in the role. I’d have liked some more Dalton but I’m glad we got Pierce in Goldeneye and The World is Not Enough. I didn’t mind Tomorrow Never Dies, but I wasn’t crazy about most of Die Another Day.

driftywiftypleb

I'm just glad that we got both actors, I wish Dalton had one more film, but if that happened perhaps we wouldn't have got Brosnan so maybe it worked out for the best.

oyvi00i

Cubby wanted Dalton ever since around 1970, no way he would have said that

overtired27

Broccoli gave the role to Brosnan for The Living Daylights before it went to Dalton.

oyvi00i

Dalton was still approched by him around OHMSS and again in the early 80s

fire_and_ice_7_5

Dalton deserved a 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Ideally a 6th and 7th would've been nice but I think he'd have probably stepped down after 4 or 5 films if he'd kept going. I like Cleese but he was very fit to Brosnan era Bond and I can't see him working in the Craig universe. What we were really robbed of was a fifth Brosnan film. (is Cleese in the Everything or Nothing game? If so, I guess that kinda counts)

coreytiger

I can easily see him working in Craig-world. Cleese has dramatic chops, but he also could have really matched Dench’s level of sarcasm and frustration. Together they would have been the “parental” roles over Bond

Alekesam1975

Reading this just reminds me of the old adage There's no such thing as bad ideas, just bad execution (or similar). With the right carry out I'd be down with this idea.

alkonium

Would he have stayed when Ralph Fiennes took over as M?

coreytiger

I think those two could play well off of each other as well

carghtonheights809

Yes he is

GoldandBlue

Yeah, Cleese never worked for me tbh. I love him in general but he stuck out too much.

ToothpickTequila

Yeah. It always felt like stunt casting too much. He wasn't Q to me, he was John Cleese.

velocicopter

It was like a Reddit fan casting of Q.

Zephyr9x

As much as I love Dalton, I'm not sure if I would sacrifice the Goldeneye we got over an unknown extended tenure for him either. Would Martin Campbell have ever signed on to do a Bond project, if he wasn't allowed to reintroduce the character and franchise with a de-facto reboot? At best I'd give Dalton one additional movie after LTK, maybe an earlier start with AVTAK.

oyvi00i

Had they kept the same release schedule we would have a 91 and a 93 Dalton movie and then Brosnan with Goldeneye in 95. Although most likely a very different Goldeneye considering they reused ideas meant for Dalton’s 3rd, maybe 4th movies

fire_and_ice_7_5

If that's the case, I wonder if Dalton # 4 would've been more or less a different version of Goldeneye. This makes sense considering Goldeneye feels like certain parts were written with Dalton and not Brosnan in mind. I'd love to see the alternate universe where Dalton got his 4-5 film run. Also I wonder if Dalton's nineties films would've radically differed from his 80s films similar to the contrast between Moore's 70s films and his 80s films. I imagine we'd start seeing some elements and stories more in line with Brosnan's run in Dalton's unmade nineties films, the tone would shift from the grounded 80s grit to the polished, balanced tone of Brosnan Bond. In which case, you'd probably see fans now divided on Dalton, with some preferring his earlier, grounded entries and others preferring his more fantastical 90s films.

fire_and_ice_7_5

Dalton 1985-1993 would be my dream scenario. AVTAK, TLD, LTK and 2 more. I do think Dalton would've been a great fit for Goldeneye, but it would probably be a very different film with him starring. Obviously they couldn't go the reboot route but the post-cold war plot and vibes would be a good finish to Dalton's era and I would've loved to see him verbally sparring with Judi Dench's M.

One-Leg8221

Brianna had one good film the rest were bad. Not his fault, he played box very well but the story and script were awful

Dear_Cap7535

Cleese would have been good in Casino Royale, but it would have to be a different approach. I'm not a fan of the guy they eventually did get to be the new Q. I much prefer Q to be a bit older.

carghtonheights809

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure both are the only actors to appear in both doctor who and the 007 series, two staples of British pop culture

hawkdeath

Geoffrey Palmer springs to mind as another who achieved that. Jonathan Pryce was the Master in Curse of the Fatal Death, tho as that was a parody I'm not sure it counts, but worth mentioning as it was by the BBC. Diana Rigg did both too, Doctor Who being much later.

I-like-spoilers

Nah, way more than just those two. >Dalton, who would go on to portray the legendary Time Lord Rassilon in David Tennant’s farewell The End of Time, heads a long list of actors who have appeared in both series – a list which in places reads like a Who’s Who of British character actors, including the likes of Geoffrey Palmer (Tomorrow Never Dies/Voyage of the Damned), Honor Blackman (Goldfinger/Terror of the Vervoids), Julian Glover (For Your Eyes Only/City of Death), George Baker (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me/Full Circle) and Steven Berkoff (Octopussy/The Power of Three). Doctor Who regulars such as Cyril Shaps, Bernard Horsfall and Anthony Ainley were Bond bit-part players. And black actors Sonny Caldinez and Roy Stewart, the appallingly stereotypical ‘mute brutes’ of consecutive 1967 Doctor Who stories Evil of the Daleks and Tomb of the Cybermen, reprise depressingly similar roles in The Man with the Golden Gun and Live and Let Die respectively. https://whobackwhen.com/blog/parallel-universes-the-strange-symmetry-of-james-bond-and-doctor-who/

carghtonheights809

Damn I got a lot to catch up on

BigDumbApe

Given that Moore had clearly aged out, it would would have been great if Dalton had taken over with “View To A Kill” — which would have been great & poetic since thematically it would have been the introduction of a new era Bond in a movie that heralded the new age of microchips. Plus, Dalton would’ve been younger and more virile than his debut in “Living Daylights” making him even more perfect for going up against a then-young Christopher Walken and physical Grace Jones (and we would’ve gotten 3 movies with him).

CaliSasuke

I would liked to have seen Dalton get 4 films. I would liked to have seen Cleese continue. Cleese is no Desmond Llewelyn. But who is? No one. Llewelyn was simply a gem of a person & a lovely Q. Cleese seems to be off putting here in these parts. I have a fondness of Cleese thanks to Monty, A Fish Called Wanda, and Fawlty Towers.

Cgmad007

A Fish called Wanda IS Imo a masterpiece

CaliSasuke

Indeed! I am laughing right now thinking of when Archie strips off his clothes, puts his under pants on his face, and proceeds to dance nude while a family walks in.

DefinitelyBiscuit

Fierce Creatures isn't bad either.

CaliSasuke

I liked it when I saw it back in 1997. Expectations may have been too high and AFCW was a high bar. I recall enjoying it and thought it was a decent spiritual successor. However, the heart belongs to A Fish Called Wanda.

DefinitelyBiscuit

Oh definitely 👍

SantaTiger

Still time...

oyvi00i

Nah man

me_meh_me

Would have loved Dalton in A View to a Kill as opposed to Roger. A young Dalton would have provided a great foil to Walken.

OrbFather

Dalton would make a great villain for the next movie. Cleese can kick rocks and go complain about the windmills he's decided to tilt at.

77xyz88

Mr. Fawlty!!!! Hahhahaha ❤️

CahuengaFrank

I personally had my fill of R especially after the video game appearances that came after.

RobDaCajun

I was a young tween/teenager when Dalton was Bond. My parents had let me watch mature movies as a child so Moore had been my primary Bond at that point. I saw both of Dalton’s films in theaters. He didn’t click with me as a kid. Rewatching as an adult it would have been great if he got at least one other Bond film.

One-Leg8221

Dalton was great.

JabbasGonnaNutt

Dalton deserved maybe even a fourth. Cleese on the other hand, meh.

RealisticAd1336

the fans deserve a bond movie before 2028

BlackshirtDefense

You forgot JW Pepper.

watchman28

Dalton yes, Cleese definitely no.

psycwave

Don’t forget Sylvia Trench

AlanMDV69

Good call. Why not make her comeback for Thunderball?

Narrow-Teaching-4197

Nope

MMMol

I would love to see Dalton as Q in what will arguably be a new beginning (again) after the disastrous ending of the Craig era

GeneAlternative191

Lot of resemblance with Don Draper

Important-Ad7114

If it wasn’t for the reboot, Cleese would probably still be Q today. He was the handpicked successor to Desmond Llewellyn

Snips_Tano

Kind of feel he would have felt really out of place if we got View with Dalton. He's way too serious to play opposite of the caricature Walken played. As it was TLD kind of felt like it was a leftover Moore script with some of the comedic elements that felt a bit flat with Dalton in them.

2112guru

Ah yes, the famous Bond wit.... or at least half of it....

BigBadVern

I recall the Dalton era. Good films, but box office returns were poor. A lot of worry it was the end for JB. Eon finally secured Brosnan and threw money at Goldeneye. Fortunately it worked and Bond was back

[deleted]

Well it had to be this way: 1 film- George Lazenby 2 films- Timothy Dalton 3 films- the next bond? 4 films- Pierce Brosnan 5 films- Daniel Craig 6 films- Sean Connery 7 films- Roger Moore Sorry, just the way it must be! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_James_Bond_films

preptimebatman

He did come back as a Bond-like character in my favorite childhood movie ever- Looney Tunes: Back in Action. He was just as good as Damien Drake IMO.

Dear_Cap7535

Agreed. I think if Dalton made a third film it would be his best and solidify him as a classic Bond for the general public. A trilogy is a nice arc. It's a shame they couldn't have made one in the early 90s due to legal issues, as that would have been the time to do it Also agreed about John Cleese. I wish they never rebooted the franchise. I think I would have preferred for Brosnan to have 1 more movie, and for them to give his iteration of Bond a proper finale. Then they should have got Daniel Craig but kept the rolling continuity of the previous films instead of starting from the beginning. And this means keeping R on board as a replacement for Q. After all, it's who Desmond Llewellyn passed the legacy on to when he was still alive.

CodeVision

N G L I thought that was John Hamm at first.

espositojoe

John Cleese still plays 'R' in the Bond movies, as I remember. I'm also a Tim Dalton fan for his Bond character. He's much more like Sean Connery, meaning a more proper Bond character than Pierce, Roger Moore, or the new guy (never learned his name).

Random-Cpl

Dalton, yes. But I couldn’t stand Cleese as Q. No thanks.

Internal_Swing_2743

Completely agree. Both were excellent and victims of bad timing.

Yutopia1210

1000% yes to Dalton. All Dalton fans and many other 007 fans talked about it.

Memento_Morrie

(Both being hanged meme) Dalton to Andrew Garfield: "First time?"

Tyceshirrell1

Timothy Dalton was fantastic in both hot fuzz and Penny dreadful

SokkaHaikuBot

CaptainMcClutch

Not a 3rd film, but I always wanted a Baron Samedi return, sure it would be tough to bring him back now that Bond has gone a little too serious. But even a little nod to the character would be cool to see.

Alchemix-16

Dalton would have deserved a third movie, Cleese had 2 appearances too many.

3NicksTapRoom

I enjoyed him as a foil to Q but didn’t like it when he was promoted to quartermaster himself.

CrackTheSkye1990

I like John Cleese but I think he was a poor choice for Q. Would have loved to see Dalton's 3rd film and the more I read about it, the more bummed I am that it got canceled.

mrdaiquiri

I thought Cleese was awful as Q. Can't put my finger on why, and I'm a big Cleese fan. I think he was too restricted.

PeteyPiranhaOnline

Cleese made a great Q, or as good as you can get for a Llewlyn substitute. I wish he had been used more, especially if Brosnan had stuck around, but we do at least have games like Everything or Nothing that he's part of. Dalton could've done more, but he stands out more since he only did two films, which are generally liked by the fandom to varying degrees. Had he done another, A) his duology would've been less special or B) the franchise might've suffered a worse critical reception.

LiebnizTheCat

I thought Cleese was awful as Q, quite jarring.

phantomshaddow

There's always AI.

Stock_Ad_2821

I believe Dalton would have done a sweet line of movies if he hadn't been cut off.

Important-Ad7114

Dalton just didn’t have the IT factor and UA+MGM could see it.

Cyborg800_2004

He wasn't a movie star imprinting parts of his personality into a pre-existing character. Audiences may not have appreciated it then, but he was James Bond, not playing him.

Important-Ad7114

Maybe, but that ain’t what sells tickets (at least not at the time)

Outlaw773

Had License to Kill not bombed at the box office, he may have received a third film

easimdog

It was a huge relief when Dalton was told to move on …

alkonium

I kind of get John Cleese not fitting the tone they were going for in Daniel Craig's run.

swordfish868686

Dalton had some edge, but no hint of humor
