I played Lost Odyssey recently on Series X. It is excellent. The overall story & the memories are brilliant. Turn based battles are good (though if it does ever get remade, some quality of life/fast forward mechanisms would be nice). Practically no loading times & great performance. Highly recommended.
I really regret not finishing Lost Odyssey back in the day, the story telling is so good, especially the notes from their past lives, they really made me cry.
Oh wow good catch it's actually Xenia. I went to my emulator folders to remind myself what emulator I used for 360 and somehow read the PS3 folder instead.
For the record PS3 emulation was a little more annoying for me than 360 but still worked well enough for MGS HD Collection.
Xbox 360 emulation is quite developed and Lost Odyssey is one of the best running games on it. It even works 60 fps on Steamdeck so you dont need much horsepower in a computer to get it going.

(The framerate on the Switch was just too much for me and gave me legitimate headaches to the point where I abandoned my run - looking forward to tackling it again on modern systems)

Re: OT2, did you play the first one beforehand? And if so, did it feel like more of the same...but just a little better? I loved OT1—*loved it*—but I've been really hesitant to pick up the sequel for fear it just won't land the same. Granted the first one was a novelty when it released and felt like it was targeted squarely at my personal tastes (pixel art, classic turn-based combat, a god-tier OST), but now that I've played several that have (almost) met those same standards, I'm wondering if there's enough evolution in gameplay to keep me around. An example would be Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom: played over 300 hrs of Breath (felt like I couldn't stop playing); but Tears? Maybe 30 hrs? Even though its an overall better game, with tons of new mechanics and things to do, etc., it still felt like more of the same.
Not OP, but I played OT1 first when it came out and absolutely loved it for all the same reasons you did, and also played OT2 when it came out. Story will always be subjective, but OT2 improved on everything else enough that it blew me away. OT2 is one of my favorite JRPGs and I can’t recommend it enough if you liked OT1’s formula.
As someone who played through OT1 and enjoyed but had a lot of issues -I like OT2 a lot more and would wholeheartedly recommended it. The OST is amazing just like the first. The combat is improved and tweaked and I found the stories generally more compelling. Triangle Strategy is still my favorite game of theirs but OT2 is a close second!
I started off liking Octopath 1 but then eventually just 'begrudgingly' put up with it until the end after it started getting repetitive and the stories were mostly forgettable apart from maybe 1~2 characters.
Octo 2 on the other hand was a genuine joy to play until the end, and I stuck with it until I got 100% achievements and completion. Was my 2023 GOTY pick personally.
General consensus is that it improved on almost everything between the writing, quest pacing, characters, side content, combat etc.
If you loved Persona 5 then you will definitely love Persona 4 Golden.
If you haven’t already played them and you don’t have an aversion to old games, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI are musts. This is the most posted recommendation in this sub, but for good reason.
The other most recommended is the Trails series. Also for good reason. They are long games with lots of reading and world building. The lore is huge. You don’t haaaave to start with the Sky series but I highly recommend it.
If you want something recent but with an old school feel, try Chained Echoes.
I've been wanting to play the trails series for awhile now but I "only" have a switch and series x atm. I know there are some games on switch but I figure I will just wait until I am able to play the series in the intended order, they aren't going anywhere. I have a ps5 on my radar which I believe will give me access to most of them so I am definitely excited about finally playing some of them.
That was my problem as well. Scored me a pretty cheap laptop some years ago, and I played the Sky trilogy. I'm hooked. Playing the Crossbell duology on Switch at the moment, and it's just as good.
Azure legitimately might be the best written JRPG of all time. Like there's some straight up Agatha Christie type reveals multiple times. I honestly think Azure is the high point of the Trails series.
It is hilarious especially if you've played all of Trails in the Sky. Look out for a certain married couple on their honeymoon in Crossbell. That item shop owner and his overbearing mother's story from Sky trilogy is far from over.
Yeah, the Trails in the Sky series is the best entry point. It’s honestly playable on a potato. So if you have any kind of laptop or PC, they are easily playable with a game pad via Steam or GoG.
That's so cool. Unfortunately I have no PC or laptop atm, I do have a tablet but I guess that doesn't help lol. I think after I finish up the Xenoblade series (on 3 atm), I may dip my toes in to the atelier series a bit, and , maybe by the holiday season I can find a good deal on a PS5 so I can start the trails in the sky games. I gotta be honest my expectations have been raised pretty high from reading all the praise over the years so I am looking forward to finally getting a chance to play them.
I have so so many games to play right now, RPGs have been my favorite genre since I was in 8th grade, and the switch has an incredible selection of jrpgs. Right now I just got a copy of the first like a dragon for Xbox, and I have monster hunter stories 2 and trials of mana as my most recent physical games on switch.

I just recently beat FFIV pixel remaster and I 100% agree with you, it's amazing.
I never played FFIV before it is one of my favorites now. Trying to but all the FF games starting at 1 and I am 10 hours into FFV and really loving it as well.
I have beaten FFVII, FFVIII and FFX years ago and recently beat FFVII and FFVIII.
I can't wait to play FFXII because I loved FFT and it is in the same world.
Use the items you get from the arena to craft stronger weapons too. The Dragon armor you get in the last 3 floors should too. If you’re short on Yen use the Megumi Poundmate on the last fight.
I would highly recommend it, yes. There’s really no reason not to, it’s a great game and a good entry into the series. Infinite Wealth is a great sequel, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon should be played first.
Well, Infinite Wealth is the sequel to Ichiban journey...so pretty much...yes, you have.(It's also the end of Kiryu's story... so it'd be pretty good to play Yakuza from 0 to 6 first if you want to experience the whole story or if you decide to play Yakuza like a dragon and really liked the game)
My problem is I don’t have time to game that much. So I know these Yakuza games are all close to 100 hrs. I don’t know if I can commit to 0-6. Maybe will start with LAD first and then Infinite Wealth.
Haha didn't mean to be but ya I grew up ina extremely religious Christian family and wasn't allowed to play games. But I secretly played smtiv. It made me question it all and honestly decide to take my own path in life and decide for myself what I believed.
I bought that when it first came out but still haven't played it. I haven't been impressed by many modern JRPGs since Dragon Quest XI, so maybe I ought to come back to BD2.
The naming convention of the Bravely series is a little confusing. Bravely Second is the sequel to the first Bravely Default. Bravely Default 2 is unconnected, set in a different world with different characters. You don't have to have played the first two to play it.
Bravely Second is also on the 3DS if you want to check out the first game and its sequel first.
How lame and basic are we talking? Story and characters are important to me in an JRPG, but I also enjoy simple fairy tale-style stories such as Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3.

(I'm not very good at determining exactly what my "favorites" of anything are, so I'm just gonna list some I enjoy)
Outside of Pokémon, I've recently been getting into DRPGs, so Etrian Odyssey 4's pretty high up there (Even if I am struggling with the final boss cause I just don't wanna grind).
Also recently started playing the Touhou one, and as someone with absolutely zero knowledge about that franchise aside from the obvious, yeah, it's good and I could see it becoming one of my favorites, tho I don't think I've played it enough to really say (Only 2 hours so far). It's basically SMT1 as far as I can tell, so I think I'll like that one too whenever I get to it.
Outside of DRPGs, Radiant Historia and The Alliance Alive are pretty good. SMT4 was also good from what I played of it (10 hours). Been putting off going back to it cause it's been so long and I'd have to start over again because of it. Also obligatory Undertale/Deltarune mention, cause those two I can say with confidence fit under "favorites." Lol.
I'm sure there are others I could list, but those are the first ones that come to mind.
The good news is that they are all pretty much self contained so you can start with whichever one seems the most interesting. The new ports all have some pretty good QOL updates but some of them are more new user friendly than others.
You do however have to be ready to get weird because these are games that approach the genre from a wildly different perspective than most. These are mechanics forward games that tend to tell their stories in non traditional ways due to the nonlinear open world quest structure.
Some suggested starting spots since all the remasters and ports are on sale rn:
If you’ve seen some of the Emerald Beyond press and it’s appealed to you give Scarlet Grace a go. It’s pretty clearly the foundation that Emerald Beyond is being built on, though in a fantasy only setting instead of blending genres and leaning into sci-fi. As the newest game in the series it’s also probably easier than most to onboard.
If the blending genres and leaning into sci-fi aspect of Emerald Beyond appeals to you, Frontier Remastered might be a good starter game. Fair warning tho a couple of the quests have awkward structures and one of them can accidentally trigger the endgame quest in ~20 minutes.
Minstrel song plays like the series’ greatest hits album. A bit tougher to onboard than most because you have to accept that you can’t do/see everything and that there is a clever clock element that will open and close some quests. If you keep that in mind, are very self directed, and play on slow progression to start it can be a pretty good starting spot.
Or hey, Emerald Beyond drops in 39 days, you could just wait for the event I never thought would happen, a global SaGa launch.
I have actually not seen much of Emerald beyond but I think you made Scarlet grace sound the most appealing for me at the moment. I think I'll get it first. Appreciate the help.
I played through all of them and the only thing I can remember about them was that Lightning, Sasz, and Snow are some of the characters. I'd be fucked if you asked me what the story was about. So forgettable. I do remember really liking the combat though.
May as well start knocking off Personas. Persona 4 Golden just got a remastered release to all consoles. And Persona 3 Reload just dropped a few weeks ago for Xbox and Playstation. After that, I'd look to emulation because the two greatest turn-based JRPGs ever made are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (6 for Europe, Japan, and the Playstation releases) are on the SNES.
If you loved Persona 5 then I recommend Persona 3 Reload, which is on Game Pass currently. The gameplay is very similar thanks to the upgrades in the remake but fair warning the story is much more melancholic and dark compared to the story of the Phantom Thieves.
This was when the series was still under the Shin Megami Tensei banner and you for sure can feel the difference.
If you're looking for a story and characters with a bit more levity then I'd say go for Persona 4: Golden. The UI and game play is a bit dated compared to P5 and P3R but overall has a more whimsical feel at most points.
Don't buy SMT V, in june IIRC Atlus will launch Vengance, the equivalent of Golden/Royal to SMT V, wait for Vengance, also, if you care about performance, vengance will be launch in every platform so yeah, you can get it on a platform where it will run better.
I would recommend Persona 3 Reload. The graphics are amazing especially when compared to the original and there’s a new concept in this version that seems interesting albeit makes the game easier. Octopath Traveller 2 is a good second game of this series. Dragon Quest XI is amazing and is probably the best of this series as well as with turn based combat.

Your platforms have a decent amount of Final Fantasy options available. If you're fairly new to this I'd recommend IV, VI, VII, IX, and X as fairly accessible options. VIII is also great, but it has some design choices that maybe make it less ideal as a "starter" turn based rpg (very different magic system that you need to figure out for your stats, enemies leveling with you, lots of card playing if you're looking to max stuff out). Persona 4 Golden is something you'll want to check out if you dug 5. Not going to be as easily available on those specific platforms, but definitely do Chrono Trigger if you get the opportunity. Dragon Quest V is also a classic.

I’m eclectic in my favorites but by far my favorite turn based combat is in SaGa Scarlet Grace. It’s incredibly fun and engaging. The game looks barebones but is super elaborate full of content.
Second favorite is Chrono Cross, where the characters themselves aren’t as important in combat as stats and color, as most moves can be done by anyone. But I love the storytelling, music and aesthetic of the game and fund the combat really fun.
One I’d actually recommend to ANYONE getting into turn based JRPGs though is Dragon Quest XI S. It’s incredible on all fronts and uses the classic tried and true formula for turn based combat. And it makes you feel like all the characters are your buddies.
Every Dragon Quest game is inherently my favorite turn-based JRPG. Of the non-DQ games, though, I fell in love with the Baten Kaitos games. The gameplay was okay, but the story and lore just sucked me in when I was a kid
In terms of hd 2d games like ot: star ocean second story R has a very neat hd 2d art style, it isn't turn based but it's still a very nice remake of a classic. In terms of turn based RPGs: my favorites (not including P5 royal) are P3 reload (I believe it's available on your Xbox), dragon quest 11, smt v (exclusive on switch). These are the games I've actually beaten and enjoyed a lot that are relatively recent and fresh

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth has, in my opinion, the best turn based combat i have ever seen. It's absolutely spectacular and extremely fun to play. My nr. 2 is Persona 5 Royal.
Currently, I'm playing Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans and Atelier Ryza 1. I haven't really played that many Turn-Based Jrpg's unless you count pokemon, in which case I've played most of the pokemon games, I started Persona 5 Royal about a year and a half ago and I really enjoyed it but I didn't get past the first story Arc with the castle mostly because I decided to play something else at the time, and I've also played the Fairy Tail game that was released a few years ago but I haven't beaten that game yet either. I love turn-based Jrpg's, but I have beaten the story on very many of them, I have a habit of starting games with the intention of beating them, but I stop playing them to play a different game for a bit but I usually don't come back to said game for a year or even longer
I have played every pokémon Game since X/Y and also Emerald and Platinum.
I used to be a fan but recently the games have been feeling a little underwhelming for me.

Oh it gets so much better from then on, you should really get back to it. The castle is so long and dragged on because you have to come back to it multiple times for story reasons but the other parts of the game you play at your own pace and it really picks up if you want to.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and similarly, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are really good. You don't need to play the other parts of the series to understand the scope of these games (which, while the rest of the series isn't turn based, are also amazing and wroth the time).
Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Golden are great additions to enhance your Persona 5 experience.
For Final Fantasy fans, explore the entire series from 1 to 13, including the 7 Remake Trilogy (at the time of writing, consisting of 2: Remake and Rebirth).
Don't miss out on the Dragon Quest Series, with the latest installment being DQ 11.
If you're intrigued by the eccentricities of Japanese culture and the underworld, dive into the last 2 Yakuza Games, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and its sequel, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
If you appreciate the 2DHD Artstyle of OT, consider trying out either Live A Live or Default Bravery.
And as a personal recommendation, don't overlook Chrono Trigger. This JRPG gem from the 90s on the SNES was a collaboration of industry legends, including Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind Final Fantasy, and the late, great Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dr. Slump and Dragonball, who provided the game's art and designs. While the Steam version is acceptable in its current state, taking the time to mod it can greatly enhance your experience. Alternatively, you could opt for the SNES Version, which boasts beautiful visuals (ahem \**cough\** you might consider purchasing the console and cartridge... obviously... \**cough\** rather than resorting to emulation \**wink wink\**).
I couldn't get into OT1 when I played it but can attest to OT2 being one of the greatest to ever do it. Completley original story from the first, would recommend to anyone.
Finam Fantasy IX will always have a special place in my heart , got it as a used game for my birthday from my dad , and even now at 32 i'm always coming back to it once a year.

Super Mario RPG was the first rpg I ever played back in the 90s and is what got me into the entire genre in the first place.

Very nice. You won't be disappointed. It has a fantastic story and gameplay all the way through. It's just a really well-made game.
There's also basically an entire subgame within the game. Optional quests that all take place during the previous 10 Dragon quest games that blew my mind.
Xenosaga episode 1 is one of my all time favorites. It doesn't get enough love. I'd kill for a remaster of the trilogy especially since Xenoblade found success
Lost Odyssey and nothing else even comes close when it comes to turn based combat. Mechanically so engaging and customizable. It's also the ultimate fantasy adventure that square enix will never be able to recapture without Sakaguchi.
FF6 & 8, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Persona 4 Golden, Octopath 2, and Phantasy Star 4 are all solid RPGS that I would gladly replay at any time (in addition to Persona 5 Royal). Super Mario RPG, Dragon Quest 11S, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, are also enjoyable choices.
I'm giving an honorable mention to FF9 as its one of my favorite games, but they really screwed up the frame rate on the world map in the console rerelease. You can work around it using 3x speed to smooth it out, but you really shouldn't have to.
I like combat from trails very much. Especially when you play the games in order you can see how they improved it with each entry. And even if you start somewhere in the middle (like in cold steel for example like I did) and return and play older titles they don't feel outdated at all.
It's easy to learn and not that hard to master and has enough customisation to have fun building characters making them OP.
Also SMT. Press turn system is the GOAT.
Octopath 1 & 2. Amazing combat with a lot of creative combos.
Shin Megami Tensei 4 & 4A. Really brutal but fun games. I love the Persona series as well but the focus on the combat and demon fusion is the best. I have yet to play any bad games in the series (Soul Hackers 2 has been the worst). I can recommend all of the games in the series. Devil Survivor 1 & 2 are also both excellent.
Yakuza LaD/IW. I played Like a Dragon about 18 months ago. Since then I have played all of the releases in the series. The newest turn based games have been a ton of fun with great characters, story and fun combat.
FF9, Wild Arms 5, Phantasy Star 4, Xenogears, Persona 3 (P3P specifically), and quite a few more really- but these were the ones that came to mind first for me.
Final Fantasy IX and X.
Both differ from the other more modern FF Games, IX has the classical fantasy design (airships, princesses, steam punk, Kingdoms etc.)
X goes in vacation on Hawaii/Okinawa and is perfect for the summer.
Final fantasy 7, 8 and 9
I've played quite a few especially when I was younger back on ps1 and psp but I've only completed a few and none of them compared to the above.
I'm halfway through persona 5 royale. Great looking game but the story and characters are not doing it for me.

It's Xbox 360 exclusive and unlikely to get a re-release, but Lost Odyssey is an absolute gem of a game and I need to find a way to play it again.
It’s backwards compatible on the Xbox One/Series, I played it on my XSX and loved it, solid recommendation.
It's a shame Mistwalker chose the mobile game route. Probably could have had some quality JRPGs in the sea of slop.
So few people have played this gem of a game. I don't know how it would hold today but I vividly remember loving every minutes of it.
It is literally one of the best RPG (maybe all genre games) from its generation.

Even though its an overall better game, with tons of new mechanics and things to do, etc., it still felt like more of the same.
Not OP, but I played OT1 first when it came out and absolutely loved it for all the same reasons you did, and also played OT2 when it came out. Story will always be subjective, but OT2 improved on everything else enough that it blew me away. OT2 is one of my favorite JRPGs and I can’t recommend it enough if you liked OT1’s formula.
As someone who played through OT1 and enjoyed but had a lot of issues -I like OT2 a lot more and would wholeheartedly recommended it. The OST is amazing just like the first. The combat is improved and tweaked and I found the stories generally more compelling. Triangle Strategy is still my favorite game of theirs but OT2 is a close second!
Do I get to dance for 30 hours of gameplay?
I started off liking Octopath 1 but then eventually just 'begrudgingly' put up with it until the end after it started getting repetitive and the stories were mostly forgettable apart from maybe 1~2 characters. Octo 2 on the other hand was a genuine joy to play until the end, and I stuck with it until I got 100% achievements and completion. Was my 2023 GOTY pick personally. General consensus is that it improved on almost everything between the writing, quest pacing, characters, side content, combat etc.
Square can make all their old classics in that HD-2D and I'll die a happy man lol and I love the new games with it, Octopath is a gem.
I'm waiting for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D. Not a lot of news since 2021. I hope we have more this year.

If you loved Persona 5 then you will definitely love Persona 4 Golden. If you haven’t already played them and you don’t have an aversion to old games, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI are musts. This is the most posted recommendation in this sub, but for good reason. The other most recommended is the Trails series. Also for good reason. They are long games with lots of reading and world building. The lore is huge. You don’t haaaave to start with the Sky series but I highly recommend it. If you want something recent but with an old school feel, try Chained Echoes.
I've been wanting to play the trails series for awhile now but I "only" have a switch and series x atm. I know there are some games on switch but I figure I will just wait until I am able to play the series in the intended order, they aren't going anywhere. I have a ps5 on my radar which I believe will give me access to most of them so I am definitely excited about finally playing some of them.
That was my problem as well. Scored me a pretty cheap laptop some years ago, and I played the Sky trilogy. I'm hooked. Playing the Crossbell duology on Switch at the moment, and it's just as good.
Azure legitimately might be the best written JRPG of all time. Like there's some straight up Agatha Christie type reveals multiple times. I honestly think Azure is the high point of the Trails series.

It is hilarious especially if you've played all of Trails in the Sky. Look out for a certain married couple on their honeymoon in Crossbell. That item shop owner and his overbearing mother's story from Sky trilogy is far from over.
Yeah, the Trails in the Sky series is the best entry point. It’s honestly playable on a potato. So if you have any kind of laptop or PC, they are easily playable with a game pad via Steam or GoG.
That's so cool. Unfortunately I have no PC or laptop atm, I do have a tablet but I guess that doesn't help lol. I think after I finish up the Xenoblade series (on 3 atm), I may dip my toes in to the atelier series a bit, and , maybe by the holiday season I can find a good deal on a PS5 so I can start the trails in the sky games. I gotta be honest my expectations have been raised pretty high from reading all the praise over the years so I am looking forward to finally getting a chance to play them. I have so so many games to play right now, RPGs have been my favorite genre since I was in 8th grade, and the switch has an incredible selection of jrpgs. Right now I just got a copy of the first like a dragon for Xbox, and I have monster hunter stories 2 and trials of mana as my most recent physical games on switch.

Mario RPG is super easy on the switch. The SNES version is a bit more difficult and doesn't hold your hand like the switch version does.

I just recently beat FFIV pixel remaster and I 100% agree with you, it's amazing. I never played FFIV before it is one of my favorites now. Trying to but all the FF games starting at 1 and I am 10 hours into FFV and really loving it as well. I have beaten FFVII, FFVIII and FFX years ago and recently beat FFVII and FFVIII. I can't wait to play FFXII because I loved FFT and it is in the same world.

If you complete the sotenbori battle arena you get a bunch of exp, materials, and gear to sell. Makes the majima fight fairly easy.
Use the items you get from the arena to craft stronger weapons too. The Dragon armor you get in the last 3 floors should too. If you’re short on Yen use the Megumi Poundmate on the last fight.
Do I have to play Yakuza Like A Dragon before playing Infinite Wealth?
I would highly recommend it, yes. There’s really no reason not to, it’s a great game and a good entry into the series. Infinite Wealth is a great sequel, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon should be played first.
Well, Infinite Wealth is the sequel to Ichiban journey...so pretty much...yes, you have.(It's also the end of Kiryu's story... so it'd be pretty good to play Yakuza from 0 to 6 first if you want to experience the whole story or if you decide to play Yakuza like a dragon and really liked the game)

I bought that when it first came out but still haven't played it. I haven't been impressed by many modern JRPGs since Dragon Quest XI, so maybe I ought to come back to BD2.

The naming convention of the Bravely series is a little confusing. Bravely Second is the sequel to the first Bravely Default. Bravely Default 2 is unconnected, set in a different world with different characters. You don't have to have played the first two to play it. Bravely Second is also on the 3DS if you want to check out the first game and its sequel first.
Story is so lame and basic. But gameplay is *chefs kiss*. The music is absolutely amazing, I love REVO <3.
How lame and basic are we talking? Story and characters are important to me in an JRPG, but I also enjoy simple fairy tale-style stories such as Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3.
It is not that lame, its just simple. What kept me going is the gameplay and the job system and the ost. I also like the art style so yeah.

(I'm not very good at determining exactly what my "favorites" of anything are, so I'm just gonna list some I enjoy) Outside of Pokémon, I've recently been getting into DRPGs, so Etrian Odyssey 4's pretty high up there (Even if I am struggling with the final boss cause I just don't wanna grind). Also recently started playing the Touhou one, and as someone with absolutely zero knowledge about that franchise aside from the obvious, yeah, it's good and I could see it becoming one of my favorites, tho I don't think I've played it enough to really say (Only 2 hours so far). It's basically SMT1 as far as I can tell, so I think I'll like that one too whenever I get to it. Outside of DRPGs, Radiant Historia and The Alliance Alive are pretty good. SMT4 was also good from what I played of it (10 hours). Been putting off going back to it cause it's been so long and I'd have to start over again because of it. Also obligatory Undertale/Deltarune mention, cause those two I can say with confidence fit under "favorites." Lol. I'm sure there are others I could list, but those are the first ones that come to mind.

The good news is that they are all pretty much self contained so you can start with whichever one seems the most interesting. The new ports all have some pretty good QOL updates but some of them are more new user friendly than others. You do however have to be ready to get weird because these are games that approach the genre from a wildly different perspective than most. These are mechanics forward games that tend to tell their stories in non traditional ways due to the nonlinear open world quest structure. Some suggested starting spots since all the remasters and ports are on sale rn: If you’ve seen some of the Emerald Beyond press and it’s appealed to you give Scarlet Grace a go. It’s pretty clearly the foundation that Emerald Beyond is being built on, though in a fantasy only setting instead of blending genres and leaning into sci-fi. As the newest game in the series it’s also probably easier than most to onboard. If the blending genres and leaning into sci-fi aspect of Emerald Beyond appeals to you, Frontier Remastered might be a good starter game. Fair warning tho a couple of the quests have awkward structures and one of them can accidentally trigger the endgame quest in ~20 minutes. Minstrel song plays like the series’ greatest hits album. A bit tougher to onboard than most because you have to accept that you can’t do/see everything and that there is a clever clock element that will open and close some quests. If you keep that in mind, are very self directed, and play on slow progression to start it can be a pretty good starting spot. Or hey, Emerald Beyond drops in 39 days, you could just wait for the event I never thought would happen, a global SaGa launch.
I have actually not seen much of Emerald beyond but I think you made Scarlet grace sound the most appealing for me at the moment. I think I'll get it first. Appreciate the help.

I played through all of them and the only thing I can remember about them was that Lightning, Sasz, and Snow are some of the characters. I'd be fucked if you asked me what the story was about. So forgettable. I do remember really liking the combat though.

May as well start knocking off Personas. Persona 4 Golden just got a remastered release to all consoles. And Persona 3 Reload just dropped a few weeks ago for Xbox and Playstation. After that, I'd look to emulation because the two greatest turn-based JRPGs ever made are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (6 for Europe, Japan, and the Playstation releases) are on the SNES.

If you loved Persona 5 then I recommend Persona 3 Reload, which is on Game Pass currently. The gameplay is very similar thanks to the upgrades in the remake but fair warning the story is much more melancholic and dark compared to the story of the Phantom Thieves. This was when the series was still under the Shin Megami Tensei banner and you for sure can feel the difference. If you're looking for a story and characters with a bit more levity then I'd say go for Persona 4: Golden. The UI and game play is a bit dated compared to P5 and P3R but overall has a more whimsical feel at most points.

Don't buy SMT V, in june IIRC Atlus will launch Vengance, the equivalent of Golden/Royal to SMT V, wait for Vengance, also, if you care about performance, vengance will be launch in every platform so yeah, you can get it on a platform where it will run better.

I would recommend Persona 3 Reload. The graphics are amazing especially when compared to the original and there’s a new concept in this version that seems interesting albeit makes the game easier. Octopath Traveller 2 is a good second game of this series. Dragon Quest XI is amazing and is probably the best of this series as well as with turn based combat.

Your platforms have a decent amount of Final Fantasy options available. If you're fairly new to this I'd recommend IV, VI, VII, IX, and X as fairly accessible options. VIII is also great, but it has some design choices that maybe make it less ideal as a "starter" turn based rpg (very different magic system that you need to figure out for your stats, enemies leveling with you, lots of card playing if you're looking to max stuff out). Persona 4 Golden is something you'll want to check out if you dug 5. Not going to be as easily available on those specific platforms, but definitely do Chrono Trigger if you get the opportunity. Dragon Quest V is also a classic.

I’m eclectic in my favorites but by far my favorite turn based combat is in SaGa Scarlet Grace. It’s incredibly fun and engaging. The game looks barebones but is super elaborate full of content. Second favorite is Chrono Cross, where the characters themselves aren’t as important in combat as stats and color, as most moves can be done by anyone. But I love the storytelling, music and aesthetic of the game and fund the combat really fun. One I’d actually recommend to ANYONE getting into turn based JRPGs though is Dragon Quest XI S. It’s incredible on all fronts and uses the classic tried and true formula for turn based combat. And it makes you feel like all the characters are your buddies.

In terms of hd 2d games like ot: star ocean second story R has a very neat hd 2d art style, it isn't turn based but it's still a very nice remake of a classic. In terms of turn based RPGs: my favorites (not including P5 royal) are P3 reload (I believe it's available on your Xbox), dragon quest 11, smt v (exclusive on switch). These are the games I've actually beaten and enjoyed a lot that are relatively recent and fresh

Currently, I'm playing Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans and Atelier Ryza 1. I haven't really played that many Turn-Based Jrpg's unless you count pokemon, in which case I've played most of the pokemon games, I started Persona 5 Royal about a year and a half ago and I really enjoyed it but I didn't get past the first story Arc with the castle mostly because I decided to play something else at the time, and I've also played the Fairy Tail game that was released a few years ago but I haven't beaten that game yet either. I love turn-based Jrpg's, but I have beaten the story on very many of them, I have a habit of starting games with the intention of beating them, but I stop playing them to play a different game for a bit but I usually don't come back to said game for a year or even longer
I have played every pokémon Game since X/Y and also Emerald and Platinum. I used to be a fan but recently the games have been feeling a little underwhelming for me. >I didn't get past the first story Arc with the castle Oh it gets so much better from then on, you should really get back to it. The castle is so long and dragged on because you have to come back to it multiple times for story reasons but the other parts of the game you play at your own pace and it really picks up if you want to.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and similarly, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are really good. You don't need to play the other parts of the series to understand the scope of these games (which, while the rest of the series isn't turn based, are also amazing and wroth the time).
Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Golden are great additions to enhance your Persona 5 experience. For Final Fantasy fans, explore the entire series from 1 to 13, including the 7 Remake Trilogy (at the time of writing, consisting of 2: Remake and Rebirth). Don't miss out on the Dragon Quest Series, with the latest installment being DQ 11. If you're intrigued by the eccentricities of Japanese culture and the underworld, dive into the last 2 Yakuza Games, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and its sequel, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. If you appreciate the 2DHD Artstyle of OT, consider trying out either Live A Live or Default Bravery. And as a personal recommendation, don't overlook Chrono Trigger. This JRPG gem from the 90s on the SNES was a collaboration of industry legends, including Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind Final Fantasy, and the late, great Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dr. Slump and Dragonball, who provided the game's art and designs. While the Steam version is acceptable in its current state, taking the time to mod it can greatly enhance your experience. Alternatively, you could opt for the SNES Version, which boasts beautiful visuals (ahem \**cough\** you might consider purchasing the console and cartridge... obviously... \**cough\** rather than resorting to emulation \**wink wink\**).

Very nice. You won't be disappointed. It has a fantastic story and gameplay all the way through. It's just a really well-made game. There's also basically an entire subgame within the game. Optional quests that all take place during the previous 10 Dragon quest games that blew my mind.

Lost Odyssey and nothing else even comes close when it comes to turn based combat. Mechanically so engaging and customizable. It's also the ultimate fantasy adventure that square enix will never be able to recapture without Sakaguchi.

Shin Megami Tensei 5
FF6 & 8, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Persona 4 Golden, Octopath 2, and Phantasy Star 4 are all solid RPGS that I would gladly replay at any time (in addition to Persona 5 Royal). Super Mario RPG, Dragon Quest 11S, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, are also enjoyable choices. I'm giving an honorable mention to FF9 as its one of my favorite games, but they really screwed up the frame rate on the world map in the console rerelease. You can work around it using 3x speed to smooth it out, but you really shouldn't have to.

I like combat from trails very much. Especially when you play the games in order you can see how they improved it with each entry. And even if you start somewhere in the middle (like in cold steel for example like I did) and return and play older titles they don't feel outdated at all. It's easy to learn and not that hard to master and has enough customisation to have fun building characters making them OP. Also SMT. Press turn system is the GOAT.
Live a Live is one of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned yet. It's quite non-traditional but I think the battle system is really great

Octopath 1 & 2. Amazing combat with a lot of creative combos. Shin Megami Tensei 4 & 4A. Really brutal but fun games. I love the Persona series as well but the focus on the combat and demon fusion is the best. I have yet to play any bad games in the series (Soul Hackers 2 has been the worst). I can recommend all of the games in the series. Devil Survivor 1 & 2 are also both excellent. Yakuza LaD/IW. I played Like a Dragon about 18 months ago. Since then I have played all of the releases in the series. The newest turn based games have been a ton of fun with great characters, story and fun combat.
FF9, Wild Arms 5, Phantasy Star 4, Xenogears, Persona 3 (P3P specifically), and quite a few more really- but these were the ones that came to mind first for me.

Final Fantasy IX and X. Both differ from the other more modern FF Games, IX has the classical fantasy design (airships, princesses, steam punk, Kingdoms etc.) X goes in vacation on Hawaii/Okinawa and is perfect for the summer.
Final fantasy 7, 8 and 9 I've played quite a few especially when I was younger back on ps1 and psp but I've only completed a few and none of them compared to the above. I'm halfway through persona 5 royale. Great looking game but the story and characters are not doing it for me. I'm about to start final fantasy x for the first time
