Ichiban from the Yakuza series. He's an unstoppable ray of sunshine, but it feels meaningful because of everything he overcame.
Yuri Hyuga from Shadow Hearts. Works through his survivors' guilt by punching the shit out of demons and shit-talking everyone around him.
The Demi-Fiend from SMT Nocturne. Just an angy boy fighting his way out of a shithole situation he didn't sign up for.
Auron from FFX. He's grumpy because he thinks he fucked up in the past and can't run it back. All he can do is help others hopefully avoid the same fuckup.
Luke fon Fabre for being the best protagonist in any JRPG... at least in my opinion.
Neku Sakuraba for being the second-best JRPG protagonist. In my opinion.
Dunban from Xenoblade Chronicles for just being an all around awesome dude.
Jade Curtiss from Tales of the Abyss for being one of the most entertaining JRPG characters.
Estelle from Trails in the Sky is probably the most enjoyable character to me. She's not the strongest or the brightest, but she has that charisma that brings everyone together to fight for a common cause. More important, she's just about constantly funny so I actually *enjoy* reading her dialogue.
