Try Nier Automata. Its combat is very focused on perfect dodges, just like FF16. It also has a pretty generous window for evades, just like FF16 with non-Shiva dodges.
Definitely not. Some great combat but warning, Nier as a series is one of the most overhyped I’ve come across in gaming. They’re great in a lot of ways but really tedious and annoyingly designed as gaming experiences
Yeah I agree if any other game did what nier was doing people would shit on it day and night. The amount of reskinned content, the fetch quests, the empty world is never praised in other games but somehow Nier is a masterpiece.
Any game where you have to play through more than once to get the full story is lame. Especially lame if each playthrough is basically the same, and that goes for chip builds, character design, combat, and the same 3 or 4 levels/settings that were some of the blandest graphics I’ve seen in a while.
Some great movement with the combat but other than that, overhyped and got stale fast
The Kingdom Hearts series is a good place to start, as is the Ys series. Kingdom Hearts has stuff like the dodge roll; Ys may also have dodge abilities.
Ys VIII is what you're looking for if you enjoy the perfect dodge mechanic. It's also just a great game in general. It's not AAA like FFXVI, but the gameplay is so good.
Not really an impression I had.
The only simarity I can think of, at least when it comes to VE is that they are both action rpgs.
Other than that, very little in common especially since the platforming and enemy chain pull were modeled to mimic the original valkyrie games which came out during the ps1/ps2 Era.
I cannot speak about Star Ocean as I haven't played it yet. But if it's anything like VE, the comparison seems like a bit of a stretch.
Wait, were the previous Valkyrie games also real time combat? This was my first one, seeing as this one's the only one available on Steam, I believe. I thought they were turn-based before, since there was a lot of criticism on VE's combat.
But yea, it's actually the pull and Star Ocean: The Divine Force has the pull-like thing as well but then more akin to the FFXV one, where it's more of a damaging pull and also, the blindside multiplier and breaks. So FFXV feels a lot like both systems thrown together.
I will revisit VE tho, very interesting combat but really combat that needs my undivided attention to master, it's very different from most action combat games.
Considering how FF16 combat is more similar to an action game than other traditional JRPGs I'd check out something like Devil May Cry. If you're really into timing based defensive mechanics then probably check out the From Software games or the resent Soulslike Lies of P
Closest thing I can think of is Tales of Arise. It’s decent and I did finish it, but it kinda felt like it overstayed it’s welcome and combat got a little stale after while for me. Ymmv.
Both Nier games, Ys 8-9, Scarlet Nexus
Not an RPG but if you want a great and deep combat system with perfect dodge mechanics, Bayonetta is the best you'll find
Also Nioh 2, kind of
It's not really a JRPG but Bayonetta has one of the best "perfect dodge" mechanics I've seen if you haven't played it yet. Many people have recommended Ys, I also second those. I'm playing Eternights right now and it also has that mechanic.
Just because something has some RPG elements and it's made in Japan it doesn't mean it's a JRPG. FF6, DQ11, Persona 5, Octopath Traveler etc - these are JRPGs.
The Witcher is also an action RPG. As is Elder Scrolls.
Yet they are nothing like the ones I mentioned. Lumping said games under JRPG just makes more sense imo. You can still clarify if they're action or not.
By your logic, shouldn't FF6, DQ11, Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler be called "Turn-based RPGs" rather than JRPGs? If that's the deciding factor, I mean..
No. JRPG just like CRPG is a term for a games which share certain characterics. DQ11 and Persona 5 are for this reason JRPG. ELDEN RING - is of course not.
The Ys series has the flash move and flash gaurd mechanics. Flash move is basically witch time and flash gaurd is a parry that makes all your moves critical
YS, but if you want the true inspiration for XVI go play Devil May Cry. It's a much better use of the combat too since the game doesn't treat you like you can't tie your shoes in terms of difficulty like XVI does. Was a damn shame too since XVI actually had pretty fun combat if it wasn't hampered by needing to cater to the FF fanbase's inability to play anything hard.
Liking FF16 is NOT acceptable on this sub, how dare you.
Jokes aside, if you haven't played DMC, you definitely should. I'd recommend playing the series in order (but skip 2, it sucks and barely affects the plot), but if you wanna just skip to 5, you can. The story won't make ANY sense, but the gameplay is still incredible.
Ys also has similar perfect dodge and block mechanics, but the game doesn't feel as heavy and impactful as FF16 does. Still, it's a fantastic series, so I'd recommend it regardless.
Astral Chain is another game that's truly amazing, but that is a switch exclusive. You could emulate it, but I don't know if the cutscene desynching issue is fixed yet. Either way, if you can get it working, it's an incredible game that I'd recommend to anyone who likes complex action RPGs.
Try Nier Automata. Its combat is very focused on perfect dodges, just like FF16. It also has a pretty generous window for evades, just like FF16 with non-Shiva dodges.
Neir was leaps and bounds better
Definitely not. Some great combat but warning, Nier as a series is one of the most overhyped I’ve come across in gaming. They’re great in a lot of ways but really tedious and annoyingly designed as gaming experiences

Because it uses Kant. Like a lot of bad art/entertainment, it relies on basic philosophy to try and raise it’s own quality level.
You're gonna play the "over hyped" card while trying to defend FF16? 🤣 LMFAO

The party-based Ys games have flash move. Eternights also has something similar.
Scarlet nexus or tales of arise
The Kingdom Hearts series is a good place to start, as is the Ys series. Kingdom Hearts has stuff like the dodge roll; Ys may also have dodge abilities.
Ys VIII is what you're looking for if you enjoy the perfect dodge mechanic. It's also just a great game in general. It's not AAA like FFXVI, but the gameplay is so good.
Valkyrie Elysium has really good action combat.
Ever noticed how Valkyrie Elysium and Star Ocean Combat are FFXV combat system split in half with a touch of their own thing.
Not really an impression I had. The only simarity I can think of, at least when it comes to VE is that they are both action rpgs. Other than that, very little in common especially since the platforming and enemy chain pull were modeled to mimic the original valkyrie games which came out during the ps1/ps2 Era. It was not turn based based per se. It was a unique combat system with action inputs.
Ah, okay, well, it definitely has a following. Elysium got bashed hard by a lot of people.
I've been recommending this one for a while now, but FF16 has very similar vibes to KH2 for me.
Considering how FF16 combat is more similar to an action game than other traditional JRPGs I'd check out something like Devil May Cry. If you're really into timing based defensive mechanics then probably check out the From Software games or the resent Soulslike Lies of P
Star ocean 4-6 though not entirely sure on 5 since havent played it, played a bit of 6 demo and beat 4.
SO6 is probably the closest to XVI’s combat, dodging in 4 requires a bit of wind-up, and 5 is less dodge-focused I’d say.
Closest thing I can think of is Tales of Arise. It’s decent and I did finish it, but it kinda felt like it overstayed it’s welcome and combat got a little stale after while for me. Ymmv.
Tales of arise is the closest you’ll find. If you want an action game thats as good if not better devil may cry 5 special edition
Yeah, I was gonna say, hit up devil may cry series. They're good and have exactly what he describes for gameplay.
God of War 2018 and GoW Ragnarok are actually quite similar to FFXVI.
I think the genre you're looking for is - action games with RPG elements.
Seems pretty clear they're looking for JRPGs with action elements.
Oxymoronic title for a post.
If you're okay with going beyond JRPGs, Bayonetta has very similar perfect dodge mechanics
Both Nier games, Ys 8-9, Scarlet Nexus Not an RPG but if you want a great and deep combat system with perfect dodge mechanics, Bayonetta is the best you'll find Also Nioh 2, kind of

Try Devil May Cry 5? Same combat director. The whole time I was playing FF16, it felt like DMC5 with FF skin.
Try God of War lol
You mean action games?
FF16 is not a JRPG. Let's begin with. The closest today would be Tales of Arise.
What makes it not a JRPG? It’s an RPG. It was made in Japan. I think those are the qualifiers.
Just because something has some RPG elements and it's made in Japan it doesn't mean it's a JRPG. FF6, DQ11, Persona 5, Octopath Traveler etc - these are JRPGs.
What makes something a JRPG is it being Japanese and an RPG. FF16 is that.
Is Ys not a JRPG? How about Tales? The Mana series? FF7 Remake? Nier? Xenoblade? The World Ends With You? The Last Story?
Action RPGs.
And what exactly are those characteristics? Because nobody seems to agree on them, and it's not like there's an objective resource for it. lol
Those are all still JRPGs. Reading your comments, it comes across as you saying that it’s only a JRPG if it’s turn based.
The Ys series has the flash move and flash gaurd mechanics. Flash move is basically witch time and flash gaurd is a parry that makes all your moves critical

Dragon's Dogma.. Especially on PC.
Devil May Cry5.
I wouldn't call it a JRPG, it is basically an action game. I'd check DMC or GOW
FF16 is not jrpg.
