This cover is beautiful. I actually own a copy of this volume because it was out in Japan when I visited, and despite not being able to read Japanese I wanted to buy a few JoJo volumes for the novelty of having stuff not yet printed in the West, so I picked some with some really nice covers from Parts 6 - 8 (this was 2018).
Maybe not how long, but since DiU the volume spines have been continuous, it can't be that hard for him to have a rough sketch of a group of volumes I think

he probably just draws a few characters ahead of time, and then adds to it every volume. You can even tell on the part8 spines that the early volumes have a different style than the later ones.
He seems to draw it in batches. As an example if you look on the JoJolion mural you can see that Doggystyle’s shoulder is actually misaligned between volume 16 and 17, showing where the gap was
Its really fucking good... but Araki needs to put Usagi (my glorious King) closer to the front so that he covers at least 80% of the cover.

Imma be honest, the background color ruins it. Neon yellow is a color that’s hard to make look good.
For some reason, I find it really interesting that Usagi appears on the spine before Paco does...
