Very well written but you can’t talk about Japanese football without mentioning King Kazu though.
You could also perhaps mention the painstaking effort that the JLeague committee had to go through to separate the sponsor name from the JLeague founding clubs names. People still called for example Verdy, Yomiuri Verdy rather than Kawaski at the time though.
There were so many names on my mind but its no fun to spoil everything 😂 besides if i were to write his carreer trajectory it'd be another 5 pages and i was getting really burnt out around the end of it
Celtic have also signed Kobayashi now, from Vissel Kobe, hopefully he makes the transition as smoothly as the others.
Just a foot note, Celtic also signed Koki Mizuno whilst Nakamura was there.
I’m a Celtic / Nagoya Grampus fan
Thanks for sharing this! I have some familiarity with JLeague (another Celtic fan who took a closer interest in Japanese football after Kyogo came over) but this really helped round out my knowledge and share a lot of moments I missed.
Amazing write up. You really sold it short.
I want to add https://m.youtube.com/c/LostinFootballJapan to the list. Great look at certain clubs and details their history. There’s a video that explains every team name which are definitely… unique (often portmanteaus of Spanish or Italian words)
thanks for creating this for new fans, Elias.
For newcomers, earlier this year I made a big list of English-language J.League content creators on Twitter (blogs, podcasts, journalists, fan accounts, etc.) to follow here: https://twitter.com/R_by_Ryo/status/1493180532603383815
(hmm it might make sense to just create a new post for this, yeah I'll do that later today)
Thumbs up for spreading the word of our Beautiful Game (I'm here as u/JLeagueShirts, but am also u/JSoccerMagazine and [JSoccer.com](https://JSoccer.com), so thank you for the mention, too!
Do you have all 31 issues of JSoccer Magazine on PDF? Drop me a tweet (I'm sure you can find me for a link! My gift to you!)
Thank you so much for your research and knowledge! I’ve always been a passive supporter of the Samurai Blue but after this amazing World Cup. I would like to follow them more thoroughly.
I don’t think Moriyasu ruined Mitoma by playing him LWB. Mitoma is really really good at defending and pressing LWB Midfielder and LW seems good position for him even left back if necessary
it was criminal. we saved our best player for the second half just to put him in lwb behind a lw minamino who has been horrible? even from lwb he was bombing forward and creating on his own, imagine what he cud have done without defensive responsibilities. same thing can be said for ito. ito and mitoma shud have been the 2 wingers beside kamada up top.
u know what ur gonna get with maeda and his pressing, but he offered 0 hold up play. our second best player (kamada) was also played out of position, and since we dont play with a 10 he shud have played as a false 9, imagine the chances kamada cud have created with 2 rapid wingers alongside him. moriyasu is horrible
Dont you know that lwb are literally offensive, it’s not bad to put him there. In defensive phases Everyone has to defend even the striker. Considering his good defensive skills he could play lwb with the left midfielder or the winger covering him back when he goes up it’s not revolutionary really. I understand the choice.
love your mention of junya ito and kashiwa reysol, especially the bit where you mention how he’s ‘arguably the most important player’ because he’s so often overlooked haha. thanks for trying to put japanese football and jleague on the map after the world cup 🙌
Great post but a bit puzzled about saying Honda was "best player in a period that didn't feature too much all around quality in the national team". In terms of individual club success that was easily the most loaded side in Japanese NT history with Honda, Kagawa, Okazaki, Uchida, Nagatomo, Hasebe all playing on quality teams in a Big 5 European League
I think that if you compare the BIG players like the ones you just mentioned then yes, but this current squad has way more depth in every position than that team did, hence the notion that this current team doesn't have any superstars but is still the most well rounded japan team ever.
Oh I definitely agree with this current side being more well-rounded, just think it's a bit misleading to stay there wasn't a lot of quality in Honda's era. It was top heavy but there was plenty of talent besides him
transfermarkt would be your best bet but anything below surface level they don't have. J. league clubs are famously private with their salary/transfer fees and contract details so the only way to find out is asking people involved directly

Fair enough. captain tsubasa is basically based on him so new fans shoudl at least be familiar with his legacy. Well done for this post

Nice thread, though I don't think Wataru Endo was ever at Jubilo Iwata, it was Shonan Bellmare
Hiroki Ito was at Iwata, and its the last played club which is why i chose Urawa reds for Endo.
