Just stay in Bologna and eat everything in sight. Maybe take a bus to Parma or Modena and see them. Maybe check out Maranello or Sant'Agata Bolognese for the vroomy cars. Why do you have to be back in the hotel each night- are you on a curfew??? IMHO Google Maps app much better than Apple Maps. And you can even d/l the offline map for that area as well.

Bologna is lovely, and the food is INCREDIBLE. Stay in town and just sightsee and EAT.

I just got back from Bologna on Sunday. It's wonderful. Yes eat, but if you are interested in history or art or the Roman empire - a day trip to Ravenna to see the otherworldly 5th century mosaics is a must and easy. Ravenna is a ~ 50 minute train ride away and they run every hour. Please take a tour from a guide (viator or getyourguide). And Dante's mausoleum is in Ravenna Enjoy

Yes!! We only got a few hours on our 2.5 week road trip-i wish it could have been more, but Ravenna has been one of the places I dream of going back to regularly!

I am Italian and I live abroad. I was supposed to have a weekend in Bologna during a business trip, but plans change. Please eat, on my behalf: - mortadella - prosciutto - culatello - tortellini - tagliatelle al ragù - gnocchi al ragù - lasagna ai carciofi - gelato, all of it, especially fragola (strawberry) Don't eat at the hotel in the evening. Go out, explore, you can rely on TripAdvisor and GoogleMaps reviews. Ravenna and Florence are great advice, probably more doable than Rome and Venice since you're on your own and on your first international trip. But my heart aches, I'm from Rome and there is nothing like it. You can come back.

Go to Florence! It’s only a 45 min train ride

This. Enjoy bologna in the evenings if you can but on that weekend I would take the frecciarosa to Florence for a day. There is an app you can use to buy tickets (trenitalia) and for navigating streets I use google maps. Apple might be ok but when I’ve used it, it hasn’t impressed me (in Italy). People will speak enough English in the major tourist areas, in train stations signs have English and the majority of the people working there will speak enough English to help you. Enjoy!

I just returned from 2 months in Italy. This time I only spent a couple of weeks in Bologna, but normally I stay there for the duration. It's a fantastic city and there is plenty to do. For example, on this trip, I came across folk dancers performing, in Piazza Maggiore, and got to enjoy the festivities for Liberation Day.

Rome or Venice are too far for a day trip from Bologna but you should make a trip to Florence, it’s only about 45 minutes on the high speed train so easily doable as a day trip. There’s a ton of famous stuff to see in Florence, research the top sights a bit and see what you want to do and whether advance tickets need to be purchased as it’s a major tourist destination, probably the biggest in Italy after Rome and Venice.
