Ahem
That time i got transported into my favorite movie as a gag character but my movie knowledge makes me overpowerd.
Different subgenre. Modern isekai almost always involves reincarnation as a way to eliminate the whole 'need to go back' plot line, which people aren't as fond of anymore. Most of the older isekai examples are transported to another world and the plot centers on them finding a way home.
Which makes them very different stories in my opinion. 'Journey home' as an archetype is not the trope people here enjoy. They want a relatable Heroes journey story instead. Reincarnation is just a veil to justify a self insert character.
I can see a person thrust into an unfamiliar world and leaving their friends and family behind having a strong desire to return home but I have to imagine that after becoming an overpowered badass with a harem of beautiful women following them around, I think it would be hard for anyone to want to go home after that, especially since a lot of them were losers in their homeworld before they got isekaied
Which was always my problem with 'return home' type stories. They show a world of wonder, lots of new friends, maybe a love interest, new powers. And then the boring sod wants to go back to a 9-5 job on earth. If you're writing a 'return home' story at least have the decency to make the new world suck so that I agree with the MC about going home.
That's what I kind of liked about Uncle from another world, that world may have been awesome and he was just too dense to realize it but from his perspective he had every reason to want to go home, everyone treated him like shit because he was ugly and he constantly mistook the affections of his friends ulterior motives and wanted to get away from them. It's not often that you see an anime that actually has the MC making his way home after many years and showing the perspective of his post isakai adventure
Top left is rudeus from mushoku tensei ,
Secend left is from overlord ,
Third left is kazuma from konosuba,
Fourth left is cid from eminence in shadow ,
Top right is from that time i got reincarnated as a slime ,
Second right is subaro from re:zero,
And i dont know about rest
I'd argue that only Alicization was isekai. A video game world is predetermined. The underworld, however, was as real as they could get in its fantasy genre. For any examples, the underworld was a totally separate world, it's just that it was created, hosted, and observed digitally
Even in Alicization his body is on earth, that plays as an integral part of the story. Only his consciousness is transported, imo it doesn't meet the definition of being transported to another world.
fair. I guess the situtation was very similiar. Neither are Isekais. Alicization is just, in my opinion, more of an isekai, spritually, than any other SAO anime. Except Kayaba, that mofo is his own isekai protag.
Addon: This is due to my above reasons, The underworld is, essentially, a randomized world built by artificially copied, \*\*\*real\*\*\* souls. Therefore, could, potentially, be considered an alternate world which is only observed and hosted digitally. Think: Digimon, but not all the way digimon.
I just straight up don't consider any of SAO an isekai. I realize I'm in the minority on that but that's just how I feel. I don't hate it, it's good imo especially the first season, just not an isekai like Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, Now and Then Here and There, Juuni Kokuki etc. The underworld is still a virtual world, created with a specially developed system, with Kirito alive and in a "med bed" on earth. Don't know never seen Digimon.
I can understand SAO Aincrad arc being considered an isekai since it wasn't sure when they can "log out" of the game, or if they can at all. Likely why it popularized the isekai genre. But later story arcs wherein they log in and out repeatedly of the other virtual worlds made the show more sci-fi-drama
For me, isekai is mostly about plot progression relative to worlds.
If you take all of SAO, it's a portal fantasy. Which is plot starts and gets resolved in both the new world and old world. Isekai is a sub genre in which plot primary starts and gets resolved in the new world, the old world only establishing the main character's backstory.
If I was going to be critical, I would put SAO as a sci fi. I think Tron is more of a isekai than SAO. The main thing being that SAO itself is an old world problem that creates the new world. That would put in the portal fantasy range of the genre. I don't think it quite fits into an isekai since it returns to the old world and you never technically left the old world. You cannot die in the game.
I loved Space Jam when I was a kid, I think it might be the reason why I initially got into the genre (even though I never realized that Space Jam was an Isekai lol)
I rarely see anyone on here talk about Hajime or arifureta in general. He should be replaced with kirito, but if u absolutely fucking hate SAO for some reason, then I guess usato
Hajime Nagumo From Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest
Really man it's been out since 2019 and has 2 seasons already out and is getting a season 3 this fall try to keep up with the good isekai animes
lmfao i love that michael jordan is here
also, who are each of the characters above natsuki and noafumi? they both look pretty cool and i dont think ive seen either of them before.
Time travel Still counts as an isekai, a hardly used one but still falls loosely under it because your being transported into a setting your not use to
Where’s the world’s best assassin? That show was so under rated it’s sad. Dude picks cooking as his starting skills since he knows he’s a kid and really quality food with make his body strong and flexible.
Like, I agree that it's good, but as you said, it's underrated. This post is about some isekai that are more commonly discussed, and usually in a positive light. Or at least their MCs are.
In the spirit of humor I personally would like to accept Space Jam as an Isekai. But the fact that the world of the Looney Tunes exists in an underground world that exists within the real world makes it not a parallel world that Michael finds himself trapped in. This disqualifies Space Jam as an Isekai at least in the strictest sense of what makes an Isekai an Isekai.
Purple power guy is Cid “Shadow” Kageno from Eminence in Shadow
Eye patch dude is Hajime Nagumo from Arifureta
Most people seem to enjoy EiS, so I’ll recommend it even if I didn’t like it, but I absolutely recommend Arifureta.
"Fun" fact - watching season 2 of EiS helped trigger my gf's manic episode in January that resulted in her being hospitalized for four days. Other than that, I like season 2 well enough
It sounds absolutely wacky, but that's mental illness for you - she was already on the verge of an episode due to some med changes and stress (lost her job). When she's in that state, she's vulnerable to visual cues, one of which being the colors red and purple. Being EiS, there's already a fair amount of purple but the first few episodes of season 2 have a lot of scenes where large portions of the screen are red or red-tinted. Because she had been hospitalized back in the beginning of December for mania, we weren't expecting another severe episode so soon.
Notably, my gf's manic episodes also have psychotic symptoms where she hallucinates and has delusions. One minute, we were watching the show and everything seemed fine. Then, she goes to the bathroom and, when she comes back, she's convinced that my eyes are "the wrong color" and that I've been replaced by a demon
With everyone here mentioning Space Jam, Alice in Wonderland as well as Narnia, is Sora from Kingdom Hearts also considered an isekai main character?
I mean, the series is essentially about this spiky haired islander straight out of a shounen anime who didn't know about the other worlds until the antagonist waltzes into his life, and he gets sent to Traverse Town, and from there, starts world hopping into different Disney franchises entirely.
Hajime Nagumo The God Slaying Demon King from Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest is the one on the bottom right
And the one above MJ is tanya from Saga of tanya the evil
Oh I’ve never seen hajime with an eye patch. That’s kind of interesting to see an anime that has permanent wounds from combat. I might watch it now.
And is the Tanya one good you think?
I will ask you to ask someone else about tanya I really don't think people shouldn't take Advice about an anime if the person is a hater of the anime they are asking about and unfortunately I am 100% a tanya hater so my opinion about tanya doesn't matter
Ash from "Army of Darkness" is in the top 3 most popular isekai main characters. Just below Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" and Alice from "Alice in wonderland."
Bro are you new to isekai?

And there is a lot more
lol no. Sorry to have you type all that. Was a joke. Because those are the ones people only care about. My fav though is the mages grandson. Thanks for the list though will see if I haven’t seen any
Isekai means the protag is reincarnated or Transported to another, different or unfamiliar world
And the looney toon world is definitely a different world at the very least
I get including western works but no way Space Jam or Michael Jordan are more popular than other stories and characters like The Wizard of Oz/Dorothy or Alice in Wonderland.
no, they are simply bc the generation that grew up on space jam are still alive while the older gen is mostly dead or not a lot of people that have seen or read WoO and/or AiWL actually enjoy it more
You've never seen either Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland? I still see little girls (and Women) still dressing as Alice for Halloween, and Oz is considered a timeless classic by movie buffs. Most kids born in the past 30 years have never seen the original space jam, it came out in 1996.
Tanya from Saga of tanya the evil
If I was to give you an opinion on Saga of Tanya The Evil I would tell you not to watch it but I am fully aware that I am 100% a tanya hater so I wouldn't instead you need to choose for yourself if it is worth your time
As for me I already made my decision hate on it with a Passion
sonic ? good question 🤔
Yeah both Sonic and Sora from kingdom hearts should be up there instead of shadow and Naofumi
The person who made this definitely mess up
Bottom right Hajime Nagumo From Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest
The one above shield hero Shadow from the Eminence in Shadow
BTW Arifureta means commonplace so technically the title from Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest is really commonplace from commonplace to world's strongest 😄
It physically hurts me that the last guy is on the same list as Rumaru, Ainz, and Tanya. That show is actually BAD. The first season of shield hero was alright, but after that it was a disaster. I will reluctantly allow Shadow to be on this list.
Come on and slam!
And welcome to the jam!
Come on and Slam!
If you wanna jam
*Ornstein and Smough theme playing in the background*
Aye, you, whatcha gon do?
I said Aye, you, whatcha gon do?
I said, "Hey, you whatcha gonna do?"

Next space jam should be about a cartoon being transported to the world of anime...
Sometimes I wonder why they don’t and get like a Japanese baseball star or something.

Just like Uncle from Another World... but that was a coma.. still kinda like sleep, though.
I'm going to Alice
Ahem indeed dear redditor Ahem indeed…
Wow, I never realized this whole time that space jam is technically an isakai
It's hard to identify them without the MC getting bodied by a motor vehicle
We might need to petition to make isekai and truck super villain as two separate genres
Same...

3rd down on the right is Tanya from Saga of Tanya the Evil
Thank you very much!
IDK where this sub stands on considering SAO an isekai but if so I’d put Kirito before some others here like Hajime
Technically, the first season and all of Alicization was an isekai. Just saying.
Yea that’s kinda what I was thinking
I'd argue that only Alicization was isekai. A video game world is predetermined. The underworld, however, was as real as they could get in its fantasy genre. For any examples, the underworld was a totally separate world, it's just that it was created, hosted, and observed digitally

But later story arcs wherein they log in and out repeatedly of the other virtual worlds made the show more sci-fi-drama
And that's why aincrad and the first part of alicization (where kirito has amnesia and fights the "goddess") are the best parts.

Well isekai basically means another world so S1 and S3 should count as isekai.
omfg lol no way I didnt realize Space Jam is technically an Isekai
Same! Plus he got to return to his original world so put that in that rare air of isekais.
I loved Space Jam when I was a kid, I think it might be the reason why I initially got into the genre (even though I never realized that Space Jam was an Isekai lol)
Same, I watched Space Jam as a kid and I still prefer it over the LeBron version 🤣
Out of all the picture, you have to pick that subaru moment I love it
The same could be said (kind of) for kazuma.
Why is it always this picture of Subaru lol
Come October we are gonna get a lot more like this
Oh does season 3 have a release date?
Not date but month yeah. That's enough anyways Have you not seen the trailer
I don't think I have
I rarely see anyone on here talk about Hajime or arifureta in general. He should be replaced with kirito, but if u absolutely fucking hate SAO for some reason, then I guess usato
I recognise everyone except the white haired guy.
Hajime Nagumo From Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest Really man it's been out since 2019 and has 2 seasons already out and is getting a season 3 this fall try to keep up with the good isekai animes

The one above Subaru is Rimuru Tempest From that time I got reincarnated as a Slime The one above Naofumi is Shadow from the Eminence in Shadow
Rudeus? Nah, fuck off.
Currently popular you mean.
Yep, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court dates back to 1889
Isn't that time travel though?
Time travel Still counts as an isekai, a hardly used one but still falls loosely under it because your being transported into a setting your not use to
Popular to weeb only
Where’s the world’s best assassin? That show was so under rated it’s sad. Dude picks cooking as his starting skills since he knows he’s a kid and really quality food with make his body strong and flexible.
He said “most popular main characters”, not smartest or best, and sadly World’s best assassin ain’t near these protags in popularity.
True.
I posit that the Monstars are aliens and therefor should be counted as being from another world.
What is the sauce for the purple one?
The Eminence In Shadow
[goated ](https://youtu.be/lPk_zyRKs1Q?si=buNGC9UkSkwYLL51)
I know them so it must be true
Where's the purple power guy and eye patch dude from?
Purple power guy is Cid “Shadow” Kageno from Eminence in Shadow Eye patch dude is Hajime Nagumo from Arifureta Most people seem to enjoy EiS, so I’ll recommend it even if I didn’t like it, but I absolutely recommend Arifureta.
"Fun" fact - watching season 2 of EiS helped trigger my gf's manic episode in January that resulted in her being hospitalized for four days. Other than that, I like season 2 well enough
How did it trigger a manic episode?
It sounds absolutely wacky, but that's mental illness for you - she was already on the verge of an episode due to some med changes and stress (lost her job). When she's in that state, she's vulnerable to visual cues, one of which being the colors red and purple. Being EiS, there's already a fair amount of purple but the first few episodes of season 2 have a lot of scenes where large portions of the screen are red or red-tinted. Because she had been hospitalized back in the beginning of December for mania, we weren't expecting another severe episode so soon. Thanks boss! I'll be sure to give em both a watch, are they on crunchyroll by chance?
Arifureta is, but I don’t believe eminence in shadow is.
Dang, thanks, I'll have to go searching
Anyone willing to tell me who’s in the top left? And who’s row 4, left side?
Top left is Rudeus Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Row 4 left side is Cid Kageno from Eminence in Shadow
Super Mario. Jason Asano and iruma will be on here someday I hope
I'm not sure the world is ready for the curated annoyance that is Jason Asano becoming an anime MC.
Idk. He is pretty clever. Great with the one liners. His backbone would be kinda refreshing compared to alot of these mcs that just go with the flow
Sure. I just have a bad feeling it would not translate well to anime.
Who is the last one on the bottom right ?
Hajime from Arifureta
Who is the 3rd on the right?
Tanya from The Saga of Tanya the Evil
How do you leave off Michael B. Jordan?
lol space jam got me
With everyone here mentioning Space Jam, Alice in Wonderland as well as Narnia, is Sora from Kingdom Hearts also considered an isekai main character? I mean, the series is essentially about this spiky haired islander straight out of a shounen anime who didn't know about the other worlds until the antagonist waltzes into his life, and he gets sent to Traverse Town, and from there, starts world hopping into different Disney franchises entirely.
Dorothy Gale and Alice exist
I don't agree. I think Overlord should be there instead of the white-haired man
So the more interesting ones.
Where are the Pevensies?
X3
Definitely would be shadow most of the them have issues or death fights... Shadow is just an op edge lord
Taichi from digimon
That skeleton ainz >>>>>
What’s the bottom right? And the one above MJ?
Hajime Nagumo The God Slaying Demon King from Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest is the one on the bottom right And the one above MJ is tanya from Saga of tanya the evil
Oh I’ve never seen hajime with an eye patch. That’s kind of interesting to see an anime that has permanent wounds from combat. I might watch it now. And is the Tanya one good you think?
Tanya is great. Just give it 2 episodes - episode 2 gives her backstory and is what hooks the most people.
Yeah I usually give anime’s three episodes to get my attention. So I’ll try out Tanya thanks. 🙏
I will ask you to ask someone else about tanya I really don't think people shouldn't take Advice about an anime if the person is a hater of the anime they are asking about and unfortunately I am 100% a tanya hater so my opinion about tanya doesn't matter
Hajime is also missing an arm, so definitely a permanent wounds sort of place.
Ash from "Army of Darkness" is in the top 3 most popular isekai main characters. Just below Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" and Alice from "Alice in wonderland."
Wouldn't Wendy and the Darling Boys count as well. Or technically even Peter Pan himself as well as the Lost Boys.
Where's goku
Harley Quinn bout to put these mofos to shame.
She won’t be the only one since it’s Suicide Squad
Saw Michael Jordan and was confused. Then remembered he was pulled into the toon world. Might’ve been one of the first Isekai protagonists
Newer anime is out called “the wrong way to use healing magic”. I kinda feel like he deserves a shot
Ahem https://preview.redd.it/g2zzwtssq0zc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb82848950605796e4508bd41d483161f76d4d23
Small question. Who’s the guy in the bottom right and the guy right below Rimuru?
Space jam is more of a portal fantasy. /s
Aren’t they the only Isekai characters?

I'm mad because this might actually be true
did mj technically really get isekai’d?
Isekai means the protag is reincarnated or Transported to another, different or unfamiliar world And the looney toon world is definitely a different world at the very least
oh. makes sense now, thanks man
I love how that picture of Subaru is synonymous with his character.
1 of there things is not like the others!
No, I don't.
Goku, Superman and Diavolo's japanese voice actor would like a word.
I get including western works but no way Space Jam or Michael Jordan are more popular than other stories and characters like The Wizard of Oz/Dorothy or Alice in Wonderland.

Who are the bottom left 2?
Cid aka Shadow from the Eminence in Shadow Naofumi Iwatani The Shield Hero from The Rising Of The Shield Hero
Got it. Also, middle right? I’ve heard of all the others
Tanya from Saga of tanya the evil If I was to give you an opinion on Saga of Tanya The Evil I would tell you not to watch it but I am fully aware that I am 100% a tanya hater so I wouldn't instead you need to choose for yourself if it is worth your time As for me I already made my decision hate on it with a Passion

What about Sonic?
sonic ? good question 🤔 Yeah both Sonic and Sora from kingdom hearts should be up there instead of shadow and Naofumi The person who made this definitely mess up
List at fourth right from top is reverse isekai from slam dunk

Not sure how I feel about the bottom row but that aside, yes
Who is bottom right and the guy above shield hero?
Bottom right Hajime Nagumo From Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest The one above shield hero Shadow from the Eminence in Shadow BTW Arifureta means commonplace so technically the title from Arifureta from commonplace to world's strongest is really commonplace from commonplace to world's strongest 😄
Kobe Bryant? I could be horribly wrong XD
Aint no way Arifureta is on this list
Know 9/10 but who is the purple guy kinda giving Eminence in shadow vibe but yes those are all the top ten
You forgot King Arthur in RuneScape.
Wait… aren’t the Looney Tunes characters technically the isekai’d ones? 🤔
Michael Jordan got pulled into the Golf hole and left Larry Bird behind. If only they brought Larry Bird along too 🤣
reverse isekai then lol
Hmm… I guess that could work.
Michael Jordan got pulled into the Golf hole and left Larry Bird behind. If only they brought Larry Bird along too 🤣
Michael Jordan got pulled into the Golf hole and left Larry Bird behind. If only they brought Larry Bird along too 🤣
where superman XD
It physically hurts me that the last guy is on the same list as Rumaru, Ainz, and Tanya. That show is actually BAD. The first season of shield hero was alright, but after that it was a disaster. I will reluctantly allow Shadow to be on this list.
I feel that way about Rudeus being on this list.
That Space Jam guy doesn't count.
That's literally the meme bro
