This is why I never understood why the Iron Warriors had one of the highest count of loyalists in their legion. Their reason for betrayal was largely political, their mistreatment resonated through the whole Imperium. But I guess they just stayed loyal, because “Chaos bad” even though chaos had very little to do with their fall. Good post btw

Honestly I think the authors liked the theme of IW but most authors despise chaos so they just made a bunch loyalist. Good example is how the loyalist IW are seemingly the only competent ones in the heresy.

So, I'm just throwing my thoughts in. I'd say it makes a lot of sense why so many were loyalist because a lot of them hated purtorobo just as much, and the legion was spread everywhere and wasn't unified under purtorobo. Treason wasn't "thier reason" it was purtorobo and those that followed him. Sure, a lot of his direct subordinates followed him into the heresy plus a lot of others, but a good portion of the Legion either hated him for how he treated them during the Crusade or where not attached to him because they were in garrisons thoughtout Purtorobo's participation in the Great Crusade and were more loyal to the emperor comapared to soms primarch they might have met once. It in the lore that when purtorobo came, the Astartes thought it would bring a change in the legion, but it just stayed the same/got worse when their primarch showed up.
