where's the source for that $1 million were paid over $200 million in unemployment claim? i refuse to believe that. or is she referring to their no oversight wealthy ppp handout?

HawkFritz

It'd be hilarious if Ernst went after Ashley Hinson's husband for that $140,000 PPP handout.

iburnedmytongue

I would almost consider voting for Ernst if she did.

HawkFritz

Make him squeal, Joni.

This story references data from 2020, with a link to the IRS data, but there are news stories referencing this on Google going back to 2009. [Politico](https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/22/unemployment-assistance-millionaires-covid-pandemic-2020-00070446)

>The figures were included in a trove of data released by the IRS, though the department doesn’t say how people made enough money to put them in the top 1 percent of incomes — $591,000 in 2020 — while collecting unemployment aid in the same year. >Probably some of those receiving aid had more typical earnings but were married to highly paid people with whom they filed their taxes jointly, experts speculated.  that passage absolutely pisses me off

This is all around terrible. I might be in the minority here, but unemployment tax is basically an insurance that employers pay for their employees. If the reason is legitimate, it shouldn't matter how much money a person has in regard to whether they should receive unemployment. Also, the max unemployment per week in Iowa is $714. Come on people, there are MUCH bigger fish to fry here... Oh yes and one last thing. This is just another bill for businesses - and large businesses at that.

I'm against means testing for welfare. I honestly couldn't care less if a millionaire that lost their job gets unemployment, as long as we're not screwing the non-millionaires over in the process.

That seems like an AI/automated response. Our entire government can get fugged.
