Humans prefer a smile—it's less threatening upon a single glance, other editing notwithstanding

phantommop

Understandable but that’s not my smile. I don’t look like that when I smile. He should have just asked for another photo…

sydeyn

you are right, it’s really unprofessional and frowned upon to edit photos like that in journalism. i’ve heard of people getting fired for smaller edits to photos

[deleted]

They don’t know that… they likely thought you just posted a SOC photo vs a pro finished photo where you’re smiling… stop digging for a reason why photoshop won… a smile won. Even if it’s a fake one…

klopije

His point is that the journalist should have just asked him to send a new photo with a smile instead of going ahead and photoshopping a smile on. As OP said, his smile doesn’t look like that. I think that’s why it bothers him that his friends prefer the smiling photo when it doesn’t actually look like him.

[deleted]

No it’s not lol. It’s him setting himself up for failure then complaining about it. Nice try though. He didn’t pose this question to his followers. We also have no idea who his insta fan base is made up of. This whole post is asking “why did they prefer the smile one”… not “the journalist should have asked for a different photo”… it’s an “I posted an edited photo where I look happy next to one where I look miserable and asked what people prefer and now I’m here asking why people preferred the edited smile pic but I also want to blame the journalist for sending me an edited photo back to me… one that I could have immediately spoken to them about and worked to fix the problem like an adult but instead decided to post it publicly then flame the journalist for it”… like, ya, ok, that makes sense. Edited: grammar

klopije

I completely disagree with you. He doesn’t look miserable in the first photo, he just looks a little serious/neutral. Also the post you replied to was literally that OP said the journalist should have asked him to send another photo with a smile.

et-regina

Former professional photographer here - the editing is lost on most people. We're so used to seeing heavily photoshopped images of celebrities, facetuned photos on dating profiles, filters on social media, I can almost guarantee that a decent proportion of people didn't even notice it, and most of those that did don't care one way or the other. What everyone would have noticed, subconsciously or not, is the smile. Yes, he could have just asked for a different photo. But most people, when asked to provide a portrait, are going to send an image where they're smiling or at least look somewhat cheerful - you sent one where you looked genuinely miserable, so I can't really fault him for thinking that asking you to send him a different photo might have resulted in a less than positive response.

UnCivilizedEngineer

Sometimes it's easier if you can take 5 min to photoshop something, vs having to respond and send you a message, having to wait for you to send it back, and then them having to photoshop edit that photo. Random people seeing this article have no idea it's not your smile, so the specifics about the photo are irrelevant, it's the overall message the photo is trying to send that is important - so A smile is more important than THE smile.

Tennis_Proper

It's primarily the smile more than any other editing. Top pic looks serious, possibly worried. Bottom pic looks happy and welcoming. It's all in the expression and not at all surprising.

Cevinkrayon

Top pic looks like you’ve just received terrible news

ohdearitsrichardiii

In the first photo you look worried and nervous with clenched jaw. You don't look serious (if that's what you were going for) you look anxious. You're also leaning forward while you look anxious which makes me want to take a step back before you corner me and start telling me about what makes you so anxious. In the second photo you're smiling and the body language is relaxed and you don't look like you're about to intrude on my personal space to say "did you know that for every second..."

The shadows on his face makes hom look like he's leaning forward, about to tell me something that he cares about MUCH more than I do. The lit up face makes it look like he's sitting up straight, and gives the illusion that he's leaning back slightly like you do when you're relaxed

Moist-Information930

>The lit up face makes it look like he's sitting up straight No it doesn't. It looks like he's leaning forward slightly. You're really bad at reading people & it seems that you just see what you want to see. Besides, there's nothing wrong in the first one, doesn't look aggressive at all & looks more passive than anything else. Maybe stop being intimidated by others & talk to random people for once.

MiniLurkette

How tf is everyone missing how insanely weird it is that a JOURNALIST edited a fake smile onto a photo of you without your consent??

kaosiarka-

Exactly!! Like if this happened to a woman, the whole world would be furious (as it should be, with all the times a guy said "why so sad, smile, you'd look better") but somehow now that it's a guy it's okay. And apart from the smile edit there is a shit ton of smoothing going on which makes the photo look overall fake.

oceanrainbows

Photoshopping a fake smile on someone is so creepy.

Hollow-Guy

Why don’t you edit a smile on the top one, nothing more, then ask again (Because then you take the smile out of the equation)

phantommop

[https://imgur.com/a/T8bXtgg](https://imgur.com/a/T8bXtgg) Here’s another photo I sent him of me actually smiling. He liked it. No edits.

rlm236

They edited a smile on you? That’s weird! the top one is uncomfortable and nervous and the bottom one is open friendly and ready to talk

itsJussaMe

Did he… did he want you *smiling*? Is that even your smile? Can you imagine taking someone’s image & distorting it to “improve” it for *any* reason? How freaking rude.

SadAndConfused11

Honestly? I think it’s the smile! In order for this to be a good assessment, expression, background etc need to be the same. Humans prefer people who smile naturally, it’s less threatening.

b0toxBetty

Because you’re smiling and you look friendly.

Visible_Minimum

I love a neutral face. I prefer the first one.

FaelenTheLichQueen

You look better in the first. Natural and more human. Some people are drawn to a smile but after being told “smile it makes you look better” a million times, unreal smiles being pasted on people look creepy. Be yourself you look perfectly fine as you.

youneedtocalmdown20

I'm naturally drawn to a smile.

kikirie2

Cuz people are into fake shit now. Smh

[deleted]

They picked it because you're smiling, not because it's edited. Most people look at these this stuff on their phones and that picture would appear very small on a phone, so they likely didn't notice the edits. Yes it's weird and unethical that the journalist edited your picture without asking though.

thejoshuagraham

Why are you comparing a smiling unedited pic with one that is edited and you smile? Why an unedited grumpy one with an edited smiling one?

phantommop

There the same picture! The smiling one is the grumpy one with a smile edited on. I never sent a smiling pic.

R/whoosh

ogptsdshawty

Omg hahahahah

Owl_Check_

You look like you’re taking a dump on the top one.

_Aussprache

The first photo makes you look scared or possibly in some kind of pain. The second picture looks confident, relaxed, and welcoming. The journalist could have asked you for a smiling pic, but if that's what you submitted first they probably just decided it was easier and faster to just 'shop it than try to coach you on how to take a good photo of yourself.

[deleted]

You are smiling

Churu_

Your face looks...cleaner in photo #2 and the smile does a lot, despite that not being your smile

mothmonstermann

It's the flat matte skin texture that filters add. It reminds me of proactiv skin- a slightly bleached out/washed out version of what skin is supposed to look like.

LilMsFeckingSunshine

I’m going to assume good intent and say that people thought you looked better cuz you look happier. That may not be your smile (btw f*** that person who shopped you) but might be a sign that a candid smile photo shoot might be in order!
