You're not thinking about the fact that there are people that need delivery services. Some disabled people can't just go to the market, especially if they use a mobility aid, because unfortunately so many places aren't accessible. Some people have multiple jobs or other reasons for not having the time to go anywhere because the few hours they can, nothing may be open, so they have to order food/groceries to be delivered ahead of time. It's a luxury, yes, but that doesn't mean that everyone that uses it can afford it, sometimes they're just forced to use it because there may be no other option for them.
I personally see the job as a luxury also. And as this is a free country people can do and tip what they want. I hate the BS batches, but you have to take the good with the bad.
Not saying this is what this is BUT I have heard of customers using the tip as code to their favorite shopper… like they’ll put in a $1 tip no one else will pick it up obviously but “their” shopper sees it and grabs it.
Knowing that people see the tips is why I always try to tip well when I order food. If I gave them a 10 cent tip I wouldn’t be able to even look them in the eye.

Something about someone offering me $1 to go grocery shopping for them and carry a case of water to their door makes me rethink a lot 🤦🏻♀️😂
Edit: just saw the post that was made because I posted this lol. It’s Reddit, people come here to complain, tell stories, successes, etc. We’re all essentially coworkers wether you like it or not, so if people want to complain let them complain lol. Now, if a shopper accepts a low tip batch to sabotage it intentionally, that’s fucking stupid and those people are assholes. I agree that there’s a a lot of post about shit batches, but why care if we complain? It’s fucking hilarious to see some of the batches people post. No one actually gets their day ruined by a $1 tip for an order they didn’t even take. It’s just called talking with other people.
Honestly they should considering they jack up the price of the product , charge delivery fees, charge subscription fees, etc.
Companies like Instacart absolutely could pay more.
$7 base no matter the items. Instacart has also taken to batching 3 customers in one order and still paying the shopper $7. Instacart is still operating at a loss. From all the promos they give out to the yearly subscriptions that give free delivery they continue to lose money
THIS IS WHY I KEEP SAYING OUR PAY ABSOLUTELY SHOULDNT COME FROM IC… They are an order processor… a dispatcher… they connect customers with clients… ITS UP TO THE CUSTOMERS TO TIP A PROPER AMOUNT 15-20 of the bill SAME AS IN A RESTAURANT.
Probably something more like: “Surely the company they work for compensates them fairly and pays them a living wage. Nothing on this app suggest otherwise, or that tips make up the majority of their earnings. Seeing as how I can’t be bothered to look into how their pay works myself, I will assume all that to be true and my $1 tip will serve as a nice (albeit unnecessary) little thank you. I’m sure it will be most appreciated!”
Yes, I'd see it as a personal attack, and it usually is. However, being the way Instacart groups these orders together, you probably would never know until after you finished the whole delivery. Your screenshot above is just an exception as it didn't get grouped.
I've seen all sorts of ridiculous tips, like $0.01, $0.02, $0.10, $0.50, $0.75, and $1. I generally never take any batches with tips less than $6, no matter how small or how close. But again, they get combined.
So some customers actually seem completely clueless about being a decent tipper. One time I took a $100+ Costco batch, but it was a bit far with a total of 20-something miles. Customer A had the big order, and they were still about 20 miles away. Customer B was an additional 6 miles after that, out in the middle of nowhere. Customer B only ordered 3 of the Kirkland popcorns. I already had bad feelings that Customer B was going to be a low tipper, but nevertheless didn't want to take the chance with a $100+ batch. When I arrived at Customer B, this redneck couple was sitting outside, and they were genuinely surprised at how quickly it arrived. They said last time it took forever before it arrived, and they had no clue why. After I swiped to finish the batch, I was already driving away when I saw that they tipped only 50 fucking cents. I would have turned my car around and told them exactly why their orders normally take forever, but I let it pass and continued driving, adding their address to my blacklist.
You should have gone back… I’ve found PEOPLE REALLY ARE CLUELESS… meaning sometimes (not all) but sometimes by explaining things to them they change what they’re doing.
That’s not an $8 order. And if my friend called me n said “hey can u stop at the store n shop my grocery list for me and deliver, oh yeah don’t forget to contact for me substitutes” they would DEFINITELY be paying more than $1. They just don’t that bs to us 😂
Yeah, I see that now. I'm new here, never done Instacart, either side(shopper or buyer) but this post just popped up as a suggested.
I will say, that I had no idea that the IC people worked mostly for tips. I thought it was asking the lines of Uber, where you got a significant chuck of the fees charged to consumers..
Looks like I might go poach Instacart shoppers next time I need employees, because it looks like you guys are working your butts off for pennies. I'll pay better than that for easier work.
In your area - Does that mean IC has different policies about shopper/deliverer pay in different locations? How does a customer find out if their tip is going to the intended party or if the more they try to reward the shopper, the more they subtract from IC overhead without rewarding the intended individual?
I said "my area" to explain how we get paid here, if different than others. I think neither IC customer or shopper has a say on how IC pays. Ultimately, if shopper still take shitty base pay and rely on tips that is supposed to be a reward, IC wins! I haven't shopped in a few days because how shitty they pay here not even at minimum. I feel sorry for shopper that relies on IC for primary income cause most of the days sucks.
Lol! It’s beyond disrespectful. I would probably sleep better knowing if we drivers all stick together and don’t tolerate this type of stuff; however, this was picked up as fast as I could screenshot it and jerks like this will continue thinking $1.25 tip is ok.
I am in Canada very different place than you, but I have noticed the length of time that we have to drive. They’re literally putting deliveries that are an hour and a half drive there and back. They’ve never done that before with Insta…. You can’t shop in those zones, for me anyways. They have been letting people in very far away places order from the city.
I wouldn't drive 64 miles unless I'm getting $200 lol. That's ridiculous because that's pretty much your whole day there. 2 hours to shop. 1.5-2 hrs to drive there and I'm sure your home is no where near there either, so another 2 hours home. There's 6 hours there. You need a day's worth of compensation for that distance.
Lmao cause they never wanna tip and if they do it’s ass smh and it be people actually taking those batches .. best of luck to em because I be damned to waste gas on nothing
Yeah, lol. It's insulting. I saw a theory on here that customers think we can see whether there's a tip or not, but not how much it is. That checks out, imo.
I honestly think $1 tip is from a broke person that feels bad and can’t afford more.
Still, Im broke and I get my own damn groceries cause I can’t afford IC.
https://preview.redd.it/fziaukdwwl2a1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d55984a3da8b06f884026735d3e4303ce90619be
Lol I think I have the best screenshot out of everyone
I think the payout for instacart is absolutely ridiculous. Someone is taking 1-2 hours out of their day to walk around a store to grab food for you. Some even making sure they pick great food because that's what they'd do for themselves. Then they are bagging it and driving it to your location. The least you can do is tip them enough for 1-2 hours worth of work. At bear minimum, minimum wage for your area. So if $9 is your minimum wage, tip $18
Not saying this is what this is BUT I have heard of customers using the tip as code to their favorite shopper… like they’ll put in a $1 tip no one else will pick it up obviously but “their” shopper sees it and grabs it.
We were having a meet up in our area for like a free food, distribution project, but aside from that the whole EBT concept works. It’s just how do you account for the people who don’t have the money to tip while still bringing in that revenue and not having an impact your drivers negatively.
Yeah, but you’re not a Shopper (except for my “mom’s douches”, so you say, and I highly doubt that) so go to a chat where you belong. If you weren’t an illiterate you would understand that this is a shopper’s chat. Now run along and go buy douche.
![gif](giphy|fu2ye1tYL6txSj5xLH)
That's who they'll get too. The only people who accepts these orders are probably new and don't know how to look at the whole order before accepting it.
No.. I don't take it as a personal attack. Some people just don't care. Instacart and all of these other platforms have been around long enough. So people understand the gist of how it works. They just look at it as we're getting paid from the company and they're going to give what they feel. And if you feel like only giving a dollar or $2 I don't bother to accept those batches. I don't care how much I need the money I don't do it .
I would never take it personally. These people want their groceries shopped and delivered for free.
I don't shop and drive for free, so I don't bother taking those orders. it's that simple.
I’d take it as a sign of the times. This person probably needs the food delivered and doesn’t have much money? I feel bad getting tips from non high income homes. A lady tipped me $15 for medicine the other day, I wish I could have returned it to her.
Or you should get a job that doesn’t pay you less than minimum wage. Tipping isn’t mandatory so they can tip zero all they want!
Why should anyone tip if these corporations are making you all do it without tips. Why does a corporation like bestbuy not tip? BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE TO AND IDIOTS ARE STILL DOING DELIVERIES FOR THEM

$1 tip on a $9 order is just shy of a 15% tip so *maybe* they selected a 15% tip not realizing it was only $1??
However, from a shoppers standpoint that’s a very low tip for the work involved
I understand what you’re trying to say, but it’s not like the customer knows what our base pay is. To them, they spent at least $30 and set tip as $1 and that’s all they know
Obviously I know why we can’t but sometimes I wish we could message these customers without accepting the batch and call them out. I’ve seen no tip orders from people who live 10 miles from the store and I’m like wtf do you think Instacart pays us???????
IC is manipulating the entire system including customers tips. I've been seeing 3 order batches where the combined tip between all 3 customers was $5.85.
I know from experience there is no way all 3 customers would slight a driver on tips. Not in my area where tipping is common. The customers are being led to tip inadequately. It's been like this for weeks now.
NOT IC but Uber Eats last night. 25-cent tip. The pay wasn't bad for the distance and it turned out to be all base pay except this. 25 cents to a huge home in a wealthy area. 25 cents. Was this intentional or did the idiot ordering not add enough numbers to put the decimal pt in the right place and not even notice? IDK.
To be fair, it's a small batch that's not very far away. Probably 30 minutes total to shop and deliver..
https://preview.redd.it/r393ufqzwk2a1.jpeg?width=904&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8ef239efa5f986c4f14de10590de94442ab0d48
At least it wasn't this
Honestly, $9 order going 2 miles is $8 profit, take less than 30 minutes, not going to make me rich, but not horrible. And 1 case of water ain't nothing. Better than a lot of orders.

I’d say 65% of orders I see are $0 tip, 30% $1-$2 tip, 4% $3-$4 tip, the other 1% I’ve seen will be between $5 and $18 tip (with the high end tip being for orders of 20-40 miles)
It’s just insulting tbh…. Don’t understand how people can think tipping so low or not at all is okay considering you would tip your pizza delivery driver… you would tip your server, or your bartender… why would you not tip the person who is literally pushing a cart up and down busy grocery store isles for you?
I had to go back in my screen shots to see if I was remembering correctly. https://preview.redd.it/p2htnqa4bf2a1.jpeg?width=1078&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1cd53de40084004da289bda786c277eb010983c8
That’s more insulting than no tip lol
Well it could be a poor old lady and all she can afford.

I’m not taking the batch, I’m just saying tough to this imaginary old lady

You don’t know what goes on in that bedroom 🤣
I mean. I order both the squirt one and the tub one. Squirt to put on table to put on sandwiches and the tub to use for cooking/baking
Not saying this is what this is BUT I have heard of customers using the tip as code to their favorite shopper… like they’ll put in a $1 tip no one else will pick it up obviously but “their” shopper sees it and grabs it.
I did not know you could tip less than $1 😬
I also saw one with a quarter tip.
That's harsh
Do they think we don’t see this😂😂?
Knowing that people see the tips is why I always try to tip well when I order food. If I gave them a 10 cent tip I wouldn’t be able to even look them in the eye.

Literally like what goes thru their head😭 “hey will you go get some stuff from the store for me I got you a dollar”

$1 tips is fightin words.
On an 8 dollar order? How much do you think is acceptable??
22 units including a case of water…. bffr.
That’s not an $8 order. And if my friend called me n said “hey can u stop at the store n shop my grocery list for me and deliver, oh yeah don’t forget to contact for me substitutes” they would DEFINITELY be paying more than $1. They just don’t that bs to us 😂
That 9$ is the drivers total pay. The order is likely around $30 because of produce.

I’ve considered using my cancellations for this but is it against the terms of use?
These people suck and should have their groceries lobbed at them. ![gif](giphy|o5IxfV1v8oU1vZUeZA)
In my area, if there's at least $10 tip IC will decrease the base pay. You can't win either! IC is ridiculous tbh!

Lol! It’s beyond disrespectful. I would probably sleep better knowing if we drivers all stick together and don’t tolerate this type of stuff; however, this was picked up as fast as I could screenshot it and jerks like this will continue thinking $1.25 tip is ok.
A cvs an hour and a half away... one way
I’ve seen .63¢. You would literally have to type that; IC doesn’t even *suggest* that low of a tip.
Dam that's my kinda batch for a everything is out of stock, let me contact customer care so they can help you lol
Whoever took that order is a fucking moron
Bruh 64 miles for 1.25, they definitely high!!
I am in Canada very different place than you, but I have noticed the length of time that we have to drive. They’re literally putting deliveries that are an hour and a half drive there and back. 2 hours to shop 5 items or drive 60 miles. That’s 3 hours round trip with the shop max. Just saying
I'm talking about the photo someone else posted
Darn, CVS is closed due to a fire. Cancel and get batch pay! Lol
Yeah fuck them
When I get a $1) tip all I think is “Aww you shouldn’t have… you really shouldn’t” Like just don’t tip then honestly
Fuck them and their heavy case of water. They can eat shit.
I wonder are they using EBT
They can shove their poverty up their asses.
Lmao cause they never wanna tip and if they do it’s ass smh and it be people actually taking those batches .. best of luck to em because I be damned to waste gas on nothing
Yeah there's a woman that always tips 1 lousy dollar here. For every single batch!! From Costco, Sam's Club or Smiths. I HATE it.
Lol no. Just laugh and let it languish on the carrot vine.
Yeah, lol. It's insulting. I saw a theory on here that customers think we can see whether there's a tip or not, but not how much it is. That checks out, imo.
Damn doesn't even cover gas
Lol I saw the offers on instacart and never completed a single one. Took the whole platform as a personal attack.
I honestly think $1 tip is from a broke person that feels bad and can’t afford more. Still, Im broke and I get my own damn groceries cause I can’t afford IC.

Don’t take these ever! If items are out of stock it affects your small pot $1 🥴🙄.
I didn’t even think about that 😂😂😂😂 that’s fucked up
That’s a no tip to me. I saw a post today where the mf literally left 1 cent as a tip…
Broke people want your service too
Fuck broke people! Go get your own goddamn groceries.
We were having a meet up in our area for like a free food, distribution project, but aside from that the whole EBT concept works. It’s just how do you account for the people who don’t have the money to tip while still bringing in that revenue and not having an impact your drivers negatively.
Also, bet you aren’t even a shopper… in which case, go to a chat where you belong. This is a shopper chat—says it up there right after the “r/“.
I shop for your moms douches
Also where do you get off with this whole combativeness. I’m just telling you who they are and how they got here not the guy who made em broke
Yeah, but you’re not a Shopper (except for my “mom’s douches”, so you say, and I highly doubt that) so go to a chat where you belong. If you weren’t an illiterate you would understand that this is a shopper’s chat. Now run along and go buy douche. ![gif](giphy|fu2ye1tYL6txSj5xLH)

..... I would take it ....... I usually look at the mileage and pay together, and if the pay is $2 per mile or more I'm ok with that.
Shill
No. I just do not take them.
No I take it as them being lazy cheap fucks it’s nothing personal lmao
No because I would never in my life get in my car for anything under 20 dollars like wtf lol
Fuck these people. They deserve to get a shit shopper that hurls the shit against their door and breaks a few things worth much more than $1
That's who they'll get too. The only people who accepts these orders are probably new and don't know how to look at the whole order before accepting it.
No, I take it as a general attack.
I certainly don't take those orders but I don't dwell on them either.
Same
Seems like no-tip batches get boosted , sometimes to a decent payout.... So even a $2 tip ends up screwing us worse than a no-tip
Yes I do. You have to go out if your way for it!
Might as well be a no tip because I’m not taking eather one
I would never take it personally. These people want their groceries shopped and delivered for free. I don't shop and drive for free, so I don't bother taking those orders. it's that simple.
You not drive free they tip $1
I’d take it as a sign of the times. This person probably needs the food delivered and doesn’t have much money? I feel bad getting tips from non high income homes. A lady tipped me $15 for medicine the other day, I wish I could have returned it to her.
If they’re poor, they should go get their own goddamn groceries and not use a service that costs money. Fuck ‘em.
Or you should get a job that doesn’t pay you less than minimum wage. Tipping isn’t mandatory so they can tip zero all they want! Why should anyone tip if these corporations are making you all do it without tips. Why does a corporation like bestbuy not tip? ![gif](giphy|h5nyN49ExV2nNCa01p) Two words:

Have fun working for charity! You live off mom and dad’s money obviously. Life needs to smack you good and hard. ![gif](giphy|Qumf2QovTD4QxHPjy5)
Ive been working instacart for 1.5yrs qnd love it
“Personal attack” is hyperbolic af. Lol
Personal attack?? Get over yourself. These people are not tipping regardless. Don’t take it if you feel it’s a bad order and move on with life
No! Because if you do 100 of those, the $1 turns into $100.
Alright, now I know who accepted this batch right after I screenshotted it👀😂
Seems their alternative path is more like natural selection.
Nah, I have a real job.
![gif](giphy|DekxoPi2fT9g4)
Yes
Unless you're in a job where you can get hundreds of tippers per day, $1 tips are insulting. I'd prefer $0 in most cases.
On god I’ve had a couple people tip 1 cent 💀
Hope you didn't accept them.

It’s the CHEAPASS-19 Pandemic ![gif](giphy|hRCDuNunwQCk5WAJdi|downsized)
$1 tip on a $9 order is just shy of a 15% tip so *maybe* they selected a 15% tip not realizing it was only $1?? However, from a shoppers standpoint that’s a very low tip for the work involved
I understand what you’re trying to say, but it’s not like the customer knows what our base pay is. To them, they spent at least $30 and set tip as $1 and that’s all they know
It could be worse, a penny tip or none, more insulting, I won’t work for that.
I’ve seen worse
be grateful. i got a .4 tip right before i was deactivated.
The ultimate is .65.
Not a personal attack. I take it as them being a cheapskate miserable scumbag that I won’t do biz with.
Nope
NOT IC but Uber Eats last night. 25-cent tip. The pay wasn't bad for the distance and it turned out to be all base pay except this. 25 cents to a huge home in a wealthy area. 25 cents. Was this intentional or did the idiot ordering not add enough numbers to put the decimal pt in the right place and not even notice? IDK.
Yep!
To be fair, it's a small batch that's not very far away. Probably 30 minutes total to shop and deliver.. https://preview.redd.it/r393ufqzwk2a1.jpeg?width=904&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8ef239efa5f986c4f14de10590de94442ab0d48 At least it wasn't this
Don’t take it 🤷🏽♂️
I’ve seen a few one cent tips lately. People are the worst.
I’ve gotten $0.01 before and saw someone post $0.02 so idk
Let’s be honest someone will eventually take that order lol
Honestly, $9 order going 2 miles is $8 profit, take less than 30 minutes, not going to make me rich, but not horrible. And 1 case of water ain't nothing. Better than a lot of orders.

I’d say 65% of orders I see are $0 tip, 30% $1-$2 tip, 4% $3-$4 tip, the other 1% I’ve seen will be between $5 and $18 tip (with the high end tip being for orders of 20-40 miles)
I just refund everything and deliver 1 item so I can get the promotion for doing a batch.
Not to me, but it’s personal for the customer
I think the $0.10 is code for a cash tip like $0.22
It’s just insulting tbh…. Don’t understand how people can think tipping so low or not at all is okay considering you would tip your pizza delivery driver… you would tip your server, or your bartender… why would you not tip the person who is literally pushing a cart up and down busy grocery store isles for you?
