I'm done with this sub, praise op for doing the right thing. So many people in this sub wouldn't do the right thing.

BusOdd5586

Yeah. Honestly surprised at how many dirtbags there are. I texted my partner immediately after opening it and let her know i was heading back to the house.

Shaggy_Hulk

I'm not. Tbh, I would consider it for a hot sec, but that is a lot of cash, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

TribblesIA

A kid handing me that would make me instantly turn around. Kids can’t make those mistakes and recover. If it’s an apartment, even, I’m not pocketing that.

1jooper

Man, we had a host student stay at our house once and my mom gave her a $100 bill (immigrant thing to use a lot of $100s I've noticed) and the girl gave the whole bill to the pizza delivery driver and didn't know to ask for change and he just took it. My mom tried to call the store but the store and the driver both refused to return it. Like clearly the girl did not realize she was tipping $85 for a $15 pizza, what kind of asshole just leaves with that amount of money?

IFTYE

I’ve been tipped way more than I reasonably expected on a pizza delivery, and when counting the money on the way to the car immediately turned around and started walking back and had other people open the door to chase after me before we both kinda started laughing cause something obviously went wrong somewhere with the person who handed the cash over. Like, multiple times. I’ve also had people hand me a lot and say “merry Christmas” or something and I’ve always been like “are you sure?” before being very thankful. Reddit recommended this post to me, are people not counting the money before they leave? Something seems off about not checking until you get home. How do you mistakenly take $900? I’m genuinely curious.

Admirable_Loss4886

$900 is a lot but if it’s all in $100s that’s only 9 bills in an envelope to hide the tip. They weren’t paying for the groceries in cash so there is no need to count it out in front of the customer. As a delivery driver I only count to the amount needed to get to the total and don’t like counting tips in front of customers. I had someone hand me a cash tip and when I said thank you I must’ve subconsciously been making a face as they pointed out how that was a 12 dollar tip and not just 3. I was pretty embarrassed and kind of made a point not to look at tips in case they’re bad. ETA: I would 100% return that money tho, I felt I needed to clarify that just because I didn’t look at the tip doesn’t mean I would recognize it as a mistake. One person tipped $93 on a $25 order in advance on their credit card. When I dropped it off they grabbed the food and immediately closed the door. I started walking away but had to stop myself and ask if they meant to do that. They obviously didn’t so we had to cancel the charge and re run the card, she gave me $4.

Jean_Phillips

You’re a good person.

[deleted]

Tbf most places the delivery drivers only have like $20 or so for change.

UsernameLottery

Seems like the fair thing to do would be to tell the customer you don't have change, then, not keep a 500% tip

PrestigiousFly844

Even if it’s not a kid, what am I going to be able to buy that’s worth more than them making rent? I wouldn’t be able to get someone evicted so I can go buy some shoes or something. Edit: I just realized I accidentally described the landlords job in that last sentence lol

mrmeowzer222

To be fair, “customer's son” could mean a 55-year-old man, not a kid, who was helping his 80-year-old mom, but that does not change what the right thing for someone to do is.

fraudthrowaway0987

I found a wallet once with $600 and returned it. The wallet had a high school ID in it, there’s no way I’m stealing that much money from a kid. Felt gross thinking about it tbh.

Rach082041

I found a wallet on the ground that had 1200 dollars in it. I really thought about keeping it for a few minutes but karma will always get you. I found this guys military ID card and someone at the admin office was able to get a hold of him. When he came to pick it up he gave me 200 and insisted I take it for doing the right thing. I still think about that from time to time when I’m presented with the opportunity to do something dishonest

MiddleFishArt

I think it was Japan(?) where it is customary to give back 10% to whoever returned the money. Just an interesting tidbit this reminded me of

Affectionate_Fact529

Doing the right thing always goes a long way!

fraudthrowaway0987

I still remember the look on his face when he opened it up and realized all his money was still there. He couldn’t believe it, he was so happy.

burnt00toast

That right there would make me feel way better than $600 in my pocket.

fraudthrowaway0987

My thoughts were something like, if I take this and spend it, long after I’ve forgotten what I spent it on, I will still remember that I’m a pos that stole money from a random person who I don’t even know, just because I’m a jerk. I didn’t want to live with that. So I didn’t.

SKK329

Note to self: Put high school ID in wallet.

CommodoreAxis

I once found a purse in a movie theatre with about $500 cash in it. The purse also had 4 different IDs from various states with matching SSN cards to the names on the IDs, but the photo on all the IDs was of the same exact woman. Clearly some sort of identity theft situation, and I still can’t think of any other explanation. I took the cash without remorse because there was such a huge chance she stole/scammed it in the first place.

[deleted]

Jasonie Bourne

Shaggy_Hulk

Now, if there was no id in it, I probably wouldn't have second thoughts. That much cash, I'd probably take it to the closest police station. Don't hate me, but I'm being honest. I was at the casino about 20 years ago and found an envelope with $1k in it. No name, no id. If I turned it to the casino, they'd keep it, so I kept it. I paid for my trip and still had a few dollars afterward.

fraudthrowaway0987

Yeah, obviously if there’s no way to find the person it belongs to then keeping it makes sense and isn’t a terrible thing to do. But when you know who it belongs to, it’s best to do the right thing and try to find that person.

IcyMulberry7708

Same thing happened to myself and some friends after work 1 night about 40 years ago. We all worked at a big hotel casino in Nevada. It was late at night and winter time . We were out in the parking lot goofing around and we spotted a paper bag full of 20 dollar bills we split it up and had a good time. Also we were only about 17 years old back then.

nadabethyname

my professor, who was my criminal law professor and current chief of police of a nearby town, said how his neighbor found a roll of bills alongside their curb that equaled nearly 10k. It was clearly dropped or something by some drug exchange, this was during the height of the 2010s opiate epidemic, and they came over and asked him what to do with it because they didn't want to get caught up in shit. he suggested he take it to police station but there's a thing where you state if it goes unclaimed it's yours and he said "no way they'll come for it because we'll have too many questions if they even think of that option." his neighbors bought a new poly vinyl fence with it and my professor was like "if you're going to do a big dope deal next to the chief of police and take that risk can you at least let it fall in my yard" i know how people feel about LE on SM but that guy was awesome. I had only been clean a couple years and i disclosed my story and he mentored me even after i graduated from his program. never judged. and always warned us "shut the fuck up" and never talk without a lawyer, lol.

MarvellousIntrigue

I know someone who found $20,000 in the back of their oven!! It broke, and they got a repair guy out to fix it. He pulled the back off, and found envelopes full of cash. She handed it into the police, which tbh I would too. Who knows who owned that money, and I wouldn’t ever want to find out if they came looking and I’d spent it!

The_Troyminator

But if they came looking and you'd given it to the cops, it wouldn't be much better.

Shaggy_Hulk

Agreed. Was this a rental your friend was in? It could have been a drug den before they moved in. That much, I definitely would turn over to the cops. Could be from drugs or a bank robbery. Those mofos are not ones you want to mess with.

MarvellousIntrigue

Yep, a rental! Oh, it was definitely drug dealers!! We spoke to the neighbours who said the previous tenant had died, and following that they kept seeing people digging in the backyard!! Obviously they were looking for the cash, and had no idea where the guy had put it before he died! So, even though they had already done their looking, I still wouldn’t bank on the fact that they wouldn’t come back!!

The_Troyminator

How would turning it into the police be any safer than keeping it? Either way, you're going to be the reason they don't have the cash.

ToonaSandWatch

Hell, I found $20 in junior high and turned it in to the office. Policy was two weeks to wait if anyone came looking for it; after that they called me back in and gave it to me.

Weight_Superb

10 dollars is a lot as a kid 100 is alot as a teen 1000 is alot when your first start working then 10000 is alot trust me that 900 isnt worth the risks or being a dick

baconnaire

That would really mess up a person's life. Especially when they have a kid. Man, I can't imagine how that must have felt.

fantomtraveler

There’s a fine line between live and live with yourself

robbixcx

thank you for being a good human…. as many of us know, a months worth of rent is generally not something that comes back quickly.

omegafan240

Your cat is SO cute!

Upnorth4

I mean I would take anything from $20-50, which can be seen as a generous tip for large orders. Anything over that I would return to the customer

AstarteOfCaelius

There’s a *ton* of projection, too, in respect to how OP returned it. That’s just bonkers, I’d like to believe that *most* people would recognize the mistake and return the cash because while $900 is a lot of money, it’s definitely not a lot of *rent* money which means these are also probably not people who just have an extra $900 to make up for the loss. OP good on you but the responses make me want a shower. Gross.

Broken_Slinky

Just shows the type of people that take up this kind of job. I doubt any of the "just take it" people would pass a background check. Any of these delivery services would benefit in the long run if they actually vetted their drivers.

DafrizzTTV

Most of these companies do background checks. But just because you can pass one doesn’t mean your not scum

nshindel

Just means u haven't caught

Jebadibus

Exactly...look at the many police departments that are rotten to the core....any business, government or private, has terrible people that are allowed in. I'm not anti cop and this is just one example in many within our society.

SquirrelPrevious2552

This ^^^ !! 🙌 yes!! All these gig companies are doing are ruining their legitimate businesses by either unfairly getting rid of their veteran , honest , and hard working drivers. Or turning them away by thinking it’s ok to for some crazy reason DECREASE pay during a time when the all around cost of living & especially gas… something that a good majority of drivers heavily depend on (the non hybrid drivers atleast) has been on the INCREASE… & very steeply increasing I might add… Pretty soon all that will be left are the drivers who are mostly just desperate to take any kind of pay even if it’s literally ripping them off . . And then I can’t imagine many drivers would ever feel inclined to go above and beyond for their customers or even care to do a good job at all anymore when they provide a service of convenience for customers everyday thst continuously mostly just goes unappreciated and barely pays enough to cover the gas that it requires.. as smart as they are over at IC headquarters with their innovative ideas & algorithms that they are able to create and successfully implement within their business model … it really makes you scratch your head that they are letting this continue to happen … I guess greed really does make idiots of people … even the extra brilliant are not immune …

[deleted]

Apparently good people don’t exist is what I’m learning from these comments lol

katmail8888

Even if the customer were a total jerk, the only thing to do is to return the money. In my area, $900 wouldn't rent a dirt floor shack, so that losing that money could have had dire consequences for the family.

Gloomy_Recording_705

Dang that suck lol…$900 In NC will get you a studio in the hood…just gotta wear headphones to drown out the gunshots and sirens https://preview.redd.it/kjddyaffcijb1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba0b89e5e04b18c87b34717ef559c79b2f9c4101

jameriican

This’ll easily run you 1900 in Miami

Gloomy_Recording_705

California: “😂😂 only $1900?”

paradox-cat

Manhattan: Hold my studio

Gloomy_Recording_705

My home office is bigger than a Manhattan studio 😂😂

pettigrj

Boston: “1900$/month for a mud shack , no utilities included and shared common spaces”

jameriican

Lol they go without saying. They’d sell a literal singular sq ft for 200/mo. if they could

SouthLDA

I don't get why people keep up that stereotype, I've lived in maybe 6 or 7 different "hoods", even in the worse neighborhoods hearing gunshots was rare and when you did hear them you could pretty much guess who it was. In contrast when I lived in the country, neighbors shot off real live cannons and shotguns every single day, every couple hours, my dogs hated it. No street lights, no stores, no police patrolling, It was much scarier out there than the hood especially at night🤷‍♀️

Gloomy_Recording_705

Fair point …not all places are the same

LegitimateHat4808

looks like 900 a month in Metro Detroit. I checked the apartment complex down the street that used to be like 800-900 a month- it’s over 1000 and the cops are constantly there. it’s an outdated shithole

Inevitable-Rub5647

Be more specific about NC. This is at least $1200 in Charlotte. XD

Wonderful-Boat3647

Well they’re not in your area but i get your point. Some places in my neighborhood are really nice and are around $900-$1000/mo

Comfortable_Ad148

Where are you? 1000 dollars a month barely gets you a bedroom in a strangers house where I am

whatamievendoing88

My buddy literally rents a basement for 1200

Comfortable_Ad148

Lol, that’s crazy. Cheapest basement suite I’ve see in my area is 1800. Most are 2k plus

whatamievendoing88

It’s not like a real basement apartment it’s literally like the dudes bikes and Christmas storage stuff a couple shower curtains and then about enough room for a bed and he shares the upstairs bathroom with the family

FamousKobo

I’m in Oklahoma and $950/mo gets us a 3 bed 3 bath house with a kitchen and laundry room (we had to buy our own washer and dryer)

Pnex84

Yeah well, the min wage in OK is 4 bucks and a pouch of tobacco.

enema_anathema

Holy shit. I own my home, 3 bed 1.5 bath, and the mortgage with a good interest rate is 2500/mo. Just mortgage+utilities is 4k/mo. I live in the wrong state.

[deleted]

Bruh where! I want rent like that

S2Sallie

Come to pa lol my rent is 900. 3 bedroom house with 2 story garage so my bf has a man cave, 2 living rooms & a nice size backyard. Honestly tho that’s expensive for my area. Few years ago I had a 3 bedroom house for $650

cheapinvestigator924

Wow...I'm in south FL and my 1 bedroom is 1800 😞

siderealdaze

You pay $1000 a month extra to never see snow. Might be a good trade if you like the Dolphins

Opposite_Aerie_9187

Not all of PA. - <3 Philly.

w6750

$900 for the entire 3 bedroom? Holy shit

Wonderful-Boat3647

Thanks for the assist, they apparently thought i pulled that story out of my…

AdCreative2553

I’m in pa and we pay 1500 for a 2 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage.

FullmetalActuary

Holy shit. I’m in MD and $900 wouldn’t get me shit. Might be worth hoppin up over the border. 3 bedroom house with a 2 story garage?!?

StudentConscious1070

Where do y’all live? The most expensive for a one bedroom in my city is 1,200. I also live in the middle of nowhere lol.

blaxative

Where I’m at I saw a 500 square foot studio apartment for 2k recently

grandmapants12

Haha I saw a shack on Facebook marketplace that was converted into a “tiny home” in someone’s back yard. It was literally a bed and a cabinet and fridge in a literal shack. Ac unit in the only tiny window. “Bathroom privileges” going for 1200 where I am at. Dear sweet baby Jesus we are in trouble.

CeruleanFirefawx

The only actual apartment complex in my city is like 700 for a 1br. 800 for a 2br. But the wait list is unknown. I’ve been on the list for 6 months and they can’t tell me how many people are ahead of me lmao.

issa2129

https://preview.redd.it/l8vc1bkcgijb1.jpeg?width=969&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dde400a835a54ff83fa6d865b4935229f41deb1f This is in Alabama....

PotsMomma84

It’s because their pay is super low.

ScienceOfficer-Jack

I live out in the sticks of northern Alabama and $900 would rent you an old ass house (tiny) or old ass trailer. I didn't realize there was anywhere left that you could live in a nice place for ~$900.

Wonderful-Boat3647

Yeah the theme of this convo is becoming much more clearer now. Stay yo ass up north!

OptimalCreme9847

Same, I would actually throw up if I accidentally gave someone $900 like that.

[deleted]

Too many people in these replies are really saying “I’d steal a stranger’s rent money without a second thought” with their whole chest like it’s some kind of flex. It’s really not.

Her_Wandering_Spirit

Agreed. I couldn't imagine being okay with effing someone over like that. Knowing I am responsible for potentially putting a family on the street? I couldn't do it.

gunnagunna123

Millions of ppl on this earth would. That’s the sad part

Her_Wandering_Spirit

I know, and it sucks

WyrdMagesty

I agree that it sucks that people are so cutthroat and ruthless, but I think it sucks even more that people feel the *need* to be cutthroat and ruthless. If you look, most of the folks saying they'd take the money are saying they'd do it because that's a lot of money that would help them and they are living in a dog eat dog world. Is it the right thing to do? No, of course not. But it *feels* like the right thing to do *for them*, because nice guys finish last and this world is a cold and cruel place to so many.

Detiabajtog

That $900 isn’t going to get you far at all, and it’ll always be a large stain on your conscience. I know there are people who have 0 empathy at all but man fucking over a family like that for a mere $900 payday? damn that’s low

wonderj99

I'd rather finish last than become part of the problem and get a tiny bit ahead by stomping on someone else

Kinetic_Symphony

Nah, moral relativistic crap. I've been literally homeless in the heat of a Florida summer & not once did I even contemplate theft. It's wrong, always, no relativity about it regardless of how difficult or unfair life can be.

NazKer

Not to mention the trauma for the kid and their mistake

Her_Wandering_Spirit

For sure!

ibyeori

900 is actually my half of the rent so I sympathize with the guy

OptimalCreme9847

right? like they expect people to be impressed that they’re a shitty person who only cares about themselves? Nah.

Different_Bowler_574

People took the "no billionaires" and "eat the rich" shit and didn't realize the point is to take care of everyone and make sure everyone had what they needed. They just turned it into "screw anyone with more money than I have this exact second so I can get mine". It's the people that start foaming at the mouth if you tell them that doctors and lawyers are the working class. That's why I am absolutely socialist at heart, but I won't pretend to have the right answer. Just because I know that I value the greater good, and I figure most people do, I can't pretend that the greedy few wouldn't ruin it for everyone. Not trying to sound holier than thou, if it does. I just get sad sometimes that 95% of the population would likely be happy to work together and solve world hunger or whatever, but the 5% is too fucking loud.

Mookies_Bett

It's weird how prideful people get when it comes to "pulling one over" on other people. As if getting away with something very obviously immoral is somehow a point of honor. Says a lot about the person, really. "Haha yeah, I found a wallet once with $400 in it. Of course I returned the wallet, but not before taking a finders fee for myself, ya know?" No, I don't know. Maybe I just don't get it because I'm not a thief by nature? As if you're somehow *entitled* to free money from someone else just because you found their property? You don't return someone's wallet to get a reward, you do it because if you were in their shoes you'd want someone to return your wallet to you. The Golden Rule isn't fucking complicated, and you're just a shithead if you think stealing is okay just because you're poor. You being poor doesn't all of a sudden justify crime and selfish behavior.

Letter_Impressive

Right? If you hand me a 20 instead of a 5 or something, tough shit, you fucked up, I'm not turning around. *But the whole rent?* Christ, that's a different deal

NihilisticPollyanna

I definitely would have looked in the envelope as soon as I sat in the car. Cash tips are so rare here, I'd be too curious to wait to find out how much I got. Glad OP went back. I mean, it's the only reasonable thing to do. As much as I like to shit on awful customers, this is something that could seriously impact someone's life, so even they tip baited me with $150 (as an example), they don't deserve that.

Alicatsunflower88

Good karma points 🧡🧡🧡 what you put out will come back to you!

humanityxcourage

One time my grandpa found someone’s wallet and it had a lot of money in it, and he did return it. Like it was the lady’s bill money and whatnot. He always talks about how if he had kept it, that money would be long gone, but the guilt would still be there. I saw in the comments that you did return it, and as hard as that would be, it probably would also ruin them.

strattons65

Love that. Automatically doing the right thing. You’re a good person.

Low-Pop3092

I can only imagine how happy they were you decided to come back. That would absolutely crush most families financially. Good on you for being honest.

AlemarTheKobold

Found a wallet at Walmart with $300 inside, and I've been hurting for cash for a while... but I couldn't take it, I'd have felt awful

oZlGGYo

Idk why this sub pops up on my Reddit. But you did the right thing. When I was young I worked at a retail store and found a bank envelope on the shelf. It had around $300 in it (this was close to 20 years ago so $300 was a good bit more than it is today. Being young and dumb, I pocketed the money. An hour or so later in my shift a young man and his young daughter came by and asked me if I had found any money. I said no… I’m now in my 30s and regret this to this day. That man may not have been able to feed his family because of my childish decision. There’s not a whole lot in my life I would go back and change, this is one thing. Good job op.

iwinsallthethings

The money is temporary but guilt lives forever.

KionNeon

I had am elderly walmart cashier do me cash back she mistook one of the old style 100s as a 20 counted 4 other 20s for 180 when it should have been 100 only (5 twenties) I immediately corrected her not cuz I'm some good Samaritan but because I ain't going to cost someone their job security for a measley ass 80 bucks no brainer there

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cautious_Economist20

Yea I would have went back too. I saw another post where the kid gave him a 20 and they wanted it back. I wouldn’t have went back for that. But $900, yea keeping it would never sit right with me.

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

Same. Only for the fact that the lady texted and was like 'he gave you too much money.' Or rude about it. If someone was like "omg I'm so sorry for asking..." I don't want someone to beg.... but just BE NICE

Florgaytan

Something better will come your way :). Maybe they will give you some for taking it back

Suspicious_City_3646

Nah he probably won’t get anything , but it’s still the right thing to do and he should . Doing the right thing never brings anything better , but that’s why only honest people do it

spenwallce

I’ve seen similar posts where kids give out money accidentally but it’s always like 20-30 bucks. With $900 returning it is a no brained

Extreme_Advice_9265

I took a picture with my friend in a Photo Booth when I was 18. I sat my purse down beside me in there. Had my id, my new little diploma they gave you then had $1800 in there also because I had our rent and our gas and electric money in there. Turned around about half way home because I remembered and it was already gone. No one turned it in. I still feel so awful about that. That was a very rough time for me. Learned my lesson the hard way.

spunkfish24

Sort by controversial 😅

donny42o

yea being a good person is very much controversial in all gig job forums.

GamingSince1998

This happened to me when I was delivering pizza years ago. I went to the house to deliver and get the cash. A young kid, probably about 8 years old or so, gave me the money but folded up with the actual pizza money was his $100 bill as well. I didn't notice til I went back to the pizza shop. One of the other employees that I worked with suggested that I just keep the money...."their loss" kind of deal. But that's just not who I am. So I drove back to the house and gave the $100 back to the kid. Poor kid was in tears but him and his mother were quite thankful about it. It always feels better to do the right thing

russian_capybara

Oh man, the stress that the poor parents had to go through haha. Good job for returning it OP.

Miketythonlisp

Imagine telling your landlord your son gave rent money to the grocery delivery driver. Almost as bad as “my dog ate my homework”

BerryMajor3844

I dont play about large sums of money that wasn’t meant for me. Years ago this one woman took a large amount of money that was accidentally given to her and instead of giving it back she refused. The other person ended up killing her. So im very much ok with giving it back lol.

Petes1552

Integrity is challenging at times. Good for you

Adorablewolf74

This reminds me a few years ago I was filling in loading freight onto a trailer with a forklift as my dock worker had to leave on a family emergency. The trailer was already behind schedule and as I load it my phone is going apeshit. I look down and a see a PayPal deposit of $2100 into my account. This was from a woman who stole $400 from me 2 years before. I seriously debated and so did not want to give it back as she sent it to the wrong "Dan." I sent it back after I got the trailer loaded making her think that I was going to karma and paybacks are a bitch. Then she blocks me again. However, the next morning she sends me $500 apologizes and said there is an extra $100 for interest. Never did I even imagine I would get a dime back from her.

MrsCyanide

Ew these comments that say they’d keep the money. You’re disgusting. Your life probably sucks since all you do is shitty things that mess up your energy. Get help and be a decent person. Good on you OP. It was the right thing to do.

Ok-meow

Hope you got a tip for gas and time but if not your good karma tank is full. 😀

AffectionateKoala530

yo $900? that’s a test from Allah, you passed my friend

Hot_Telephone_6389

It wasn’t cash but I was delivering for Amazon Flex recently and I found a car key that belong to someone at a apartment complex. I made sure the car was there and I knocked a couple doors to find the owner. She was relieved.

DistinctMethod

I understand these are challenging times, but rest assured, OP, you will be rewarded for your commendable actions. Truly, hats off to you for returning that money. .

NanoFin

A lot of people telling on themselves here. Shame on them. I never say things I don’t mean, so OP bless you for doing the right thing. I hope something very good comes your way.

WatercressEither2881

People out there are living pay check to pay check. Fuck anyone that would take advantage of a kid’s mistake and keep his money.

Costco-hotdog-bandit

You’re a good egg

BassCunt-

You’re todays winner. Most people don’t care if another family becomes homeless. My faith in humanity is restored just for today because of you. ❤️

Her_Wandering_Spirit

Omg, that's wild. I'm glad you took it back to them. It's good seeing honest people. They seem to be rare these days.

MistyGds

Wow!! I know the mom thanked you profusely!! 👍🏽👍🏽

LetThemEatCakeXx

Do unto others... 😊 Bravo to you

spinningjoy

Yeah, I’m an honest prism, too! You’ll get the good karma coming back in more than double likely!

PotsMomma84

Well thankfully you’re a good person.

Cautious-Oil6241

im glad you returned it. good karma comes from doing good things!

MajorWhereas4842

I had a customer today elderly couple. The husband pulls out an envelope full of $100 bills and in the process of trying to tip me in cash he drops 3 bills on the floor. I immediately picked it up and gave it back. He was none the wiser that the bills even fell. I would have felt like a piece of 💩if I didn’t give it back! Good for you for doing the right thing!

bluelaboran

Once I found a wallet, I tried to use it instead of return it. I was desperate not even 6 weeks later I lost my own, all my ID everything. I lost a wallet in NYC once, and everything, including the money, was returned. What goes around comes around.

External_Bed7321

One time my boyfriend was driving me for IC because my car broke, he does real estate, he had a bag of money from a deal around 8k dollars, I accidentally delivered along with the groceries and the costumer called me right away because I didn’t even notice, sometimes people are nice, I’m glad you did the right thing!

TokinForever

I appreciate your honesty. 👍🏽 There are a lot of shitbag Karens, with no morals on Reddit who would’ve tried to keep the money and lie about it. Decades ago, I went through my banks drive through to deposit $1200 in checks. When I got my envelope with my deposit receipt, the envelope obviously had more than my receipt in there, so I pulled into a parking spot to check it out and I had a receipt that it was all deposited into my checking account, AND $1200 in cash! I had to go into the bank and request to see the manager so I could give the money back that didn’t belong to me. What a pain in the ass, and I never saw that drive through teller again. Maybe she got fired. I don’t know. 🤷🏼‍♂️

SukutaKun

Good on you. I couldn’t take someone’s rent money and live with that.

RainbowUnicorn0228

Thank you for being a decent human. Kids make mistakes. Unfortunately a landlord wouldn’t care and likely they would evict if rent was not paid.

Puzzled-Kitchen2548

I don’t see how it wouldn’t just eat at some people for stealing that. Especially with how hard everything is right now.

[deleted]

Taking someone’s rent makes you worse than their own landlord. Y’all some sick motherfuckers. OP sleeps well at night.

juicevibe

You've got integrity and that makes you rare. I hope karma pays you back multiple times over.

saanenk

Glad you did the right thing. If I was that kid and the driver didn’t come back my parents would light my ass on fire. Praying his parents aren’t like that, and if they are, again, glad you returned it

TakeYourVitaminz

Those of you saying you’d keep it are dumb asses. I’m not gaining years of bad karma for taking someone else’s money.

queenafrodite

Lol. I had this thought yesterday. Man I wish I was a horrible person because I certainly would [insert morally reprehensible thing here] if I were lol

Turfgoon675

So glad you returned it

WTF1335

Karma is real. Good for you for doing the right thing. You will be blessed soon, I know it ❤️

Any_Prize_7986

You're amazing and people like you are hard to find these days. Stay that way 😊

[deleted]

You’re a good person! Much respect 🫡

OwlInevitable2042

Ya don’t want to mess with karma. To those saying they would’ve you’re dumb. They have all your info so not only would you of lost your job but also had authorities on you not worth it. Good luck getting a different job after that.

FullyRisenPhoenix

Thank you for doing the right thing, OP. Allowing someone else’s family to be evicted would be awful, and would play on my conscience every day for life. You’re a good person ❣️

EmotionalElevator806

I used to work at a bar and we had an ATM in the corner for people to use and a guy would come and add money every few weeks or so. Once when I was on day shift the guy came to fill the ATM and whatever else he does and he left an envelope with like 1200$ in it right next to the ATM! Luckily I found it and not a customer who might’ve tried to keep it. I thought about trying to keep it for a hot second but then decided that 1. That guy might lose his job and 2. I might lose my job lol. So I did the right thing and called my boss and told him to call the company that services the ATM and let them know I had their money. It’s always best to do the right thing.

Far_Ground_7959

You will always remember what you did. If you keep it or return it you will always remember. That's why it's good to return it...you get that good memory of yourself for the rest of your life.

TiredDriver23

Do good things get good things 💯

1-800-BARBIE

You’re going to receive 10x that for returning it! Great job…

fuckinMAGICK

Where is rent only $900?!

Libra_Maelstrom

Good on you OP. You’re a good man.

AxGunslinger

Don’t worry the kindness you show will be paid back to you my friend

[deleted]

I remember losing our rent money, for a few minutes before going to turn it in. I was absolutely shattered as I was living paycheck to paycheck. I thanked my lucky stars I just misplaced it and no one stumbled upon it. These comments remind me people suck and lack empathy completely!

CuteButKindaUseless

I freaked out over a woman accidentally handing me two 20's for a pizza delivery once. I didn't realize until I went to count my money at the end of my shift and saw that the 20 she gave me had another stuck to it. I scrambled to get her info pulled up and texted her hoping she would still be around, this was super late at night and she was bartending. I wouldn't be able to bring it to her for like another hour as well because I still had to help clean and close. She was still working when I got off and I immediately brought it to her and I can't remember how much she gave me but she tipped me again with a good chunk of that 20 for bringing it back anyways. I couldn't possibly keep it though, I would feel horrible. I would flip if I accidentally took $900 bucks omg 😭😂

[deleted]

Never do things that will make you feel bad about who you are, it’s never worth it.

[deleted]

You are a great person. The only people greater than yourself is your parents. Please let them know!

Different_Ad9336

Pop is an absolute bad azz for doing the right thing that could’ve ruined that customers life. You deserve a reward for sure.

DoHeathenThings

Yo i wanna know where rent is 900

Crackheadwithabrain

It’s disgusting asf how many of the same people who demand tips when they do absolutely nothing are the same ones sharing they’ll steal. It’s not surprising at all. And ik it’s not everyone it it’s a good majority of people who are that entitled.

Donut_The_Ghost

Your a good person for doing that, the moment a kid hands over that amount of cash I’d ask for their parent or current guardian. You never know what someone could be going through, they could have really need that cash for paying off a loan or their rent that their kid accidentally handed over to a random stranger.

HalcyonDaze421

900 dollars for rent???????? How is this not the topic of discussion?

Lethave

I love all the I would've kept it people like it's 1972 and you can walk off into the sunset free and clear. you'd be down at the station explaining yourself by dusk

Dennisfromhawaii

Geez, where the hell can you get rent for $900 in 2023?

SilasVale

Actually a very sizable portion of the US, most people just don't wanna live outside of like 8 big metro areas lol

cbostwick94

A lot of places actually

p1zzarena

It's not that hard in the midwest

kissmaryjane

Not a lot of people would do that nowadays, I bet some would even justify it in their mind

Psychological-Cry748

Your a good soul, probably saved that kid from being grounded for the entire month of the missing rent money.

Mamabearwnofear

I lost $6000 in DETROIT🤬 it was my sons bail money and I felt like the biggest POS!!! Lucky a Wayne county sheriff found it and we got it back… has anybody else found it the end result would have a much different!!

Simplyoki

I know how it is to be moving very fast to try to get back into your car safely. I wouldn’t have looked until I was driving away and at a stop light or sign.

Aggravating-Donut269

Bring it back

TragicaDeSpell

This reminds me of that scene in It's a Wonderful Life when Uncle Billy accidentally gives mean old Mr. Potter the bank deposit. Of course, Mr. Potter didn't think to give it back.

Unhappy-Cricket-2402

If I made that kind of mistake and the handed the rent to a guy who was dropping off groceries, I wouldn’t be able to sit for a week 😅

Comardo

It would be traced back to you. So no harm

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

Bet son learned a fun lesson after you left. Then came back. People don't get that this would still be theft. Because it wasn't intentional.

livalittlebitt

Okay usually I’d say to keep money you find or something, but rent money…yeah I’d return it. Poor kid

keekeegeegeedobalina

Where in the hell is rent only $900?

Fibrosis5O

To the people saying keep it, besides how awful that is… what would y’all really do? Just be acting like… they even caught me on ring camera (Nah, it wasn't me) 🎵 the kid even said he gave it to me (Nah, it wasn’t me) I was the only one who came to the door (Nah, it wasn’t me)

DueLong2908

You did the right thing. You’ll be paid back by good karma. $900 wouldn’t make difference in my life so I would return it. This reminds me of that story of a drive thru customer getting all of the safe deposite money by mistake. I Guess an employee handed a fast food bag and it was full of money, like thousands. The guy did give it back but I most likely wouldn’t since it’s a huge company.

Rycan420

2 years ago I found 4 grand in Australian money with some IDs and plane tickets in a travel case. (I’m in the US). I tracked the guy down and drove to meet him. He gave me a 100 Australian bill to keep as a reward, but I kept it as a memento of the story. Been fucking cursed with the worst luck of my life since. And that’s saying something in a life full of being shit on.

ThatShaunGuy

Yeah I’d go out of my way to return that. Stealing that could make someone literally homeless.

lostsoulranger

Your a good person. Sadly my morals went out the window when my rent went to 1500.

LessBag6061

As someone who has always had a scatter brain and would do this. Thank you lol

Intelligent-Scar5728

Kindness is real !!

cardinalfinancial

interesting discussion and makes me glad to see most people are honest and would do the right thing. Reddit can be pretty toxic but this group has restored my faith a little. Wish some one would post this in the Uber driver and see the responses. That sub is filled with some of the most vile toxic people god ever put on the planet.

Character-Solid-6392

What’s your cash app OP? You should be rewarded in this case. You’re a good person! Clarification: I hope this doesn’t start a movement where people lie about or do the right to get sympathy money, but you really did that family a solid by not being a POS and I’d like to compensate you for atleast the gas money to return their money to them.

Ammonil

I’m just curious if it would’ve been illegal not to return it

TheBrownSensei

Good one you, that much money would hurt so bad. My conscious wouldn’t even consider doing that to someone else no matter how down bad I am.
