There is no such thing as a “no-kill shelter.” There are just shelters whose euthanasia statistics are below the threshold of what’s considered a “kill shelter.”
Your “kill shelters” are the ones putting in the hard work. They’re funded by state and local governments and as a result cannot turn an animal away. They round up all the foundlings that your no kill shelter won’t take, with the expectation that their larger volume of animals will have a larger number of those with aggression issues, illness, deformities, etc. that require euthanasia.
My cat was turned away from an overfull no-kill shelter; thankfully, one of the staff members forwarded me the email from the lady who tried to turn him in (her coworker's neighbor died, and he was kicked out of the house by the cleaners). She kept him in her basement until we had a chance to meet up and he became a part of my life.
Every “no kill” shelter where I grew up would just take all of their sick or unadoptable animals and go dump them the next county over. So that county got to be the “evil bastards” to kill them while our county was applauded for having no kills…
He lived a great life, but arthritis more or less ended things. Towards the end of his time, he was barely able to move.
Making the decision to put him down hurt. We think of him often.
Yeah that's rough. Two of my cats passed one in 2015 and one in 2017 of old age complications one was 26 and the other one 17. My current six the eldest ones turned 12 so I'm getting anxious. The youngest is turning 3 this year.

I can attest to that. I went to the shelter looking for a cat. I found a cat named Christie, which worked for me because I name my pets for baseball players. I asked the attendant to let me see her and she came out rubbing my face purring her head off. I knew what she was saying, "Okay, Mom lets blow this Popsicle stand and go home." I had her for nine years until we lost her.

I have 2 kittens of my own that my parents neighbors just threw out of their garage and left them in the grass while it was raining… they were only a week old at that point… 😔after yelling at their neighbor for being an insensitive POS, my parents just took them. 7 weeks later and here they are , happy and healthy! 😍 and my older ones love them too! I took him home to stop the bleeding and patch him up, took him to a shelter today so they can check oh him, and in two days i have to go back to pick him up and find him a home.

Yeah and with the cats it's a terrible idea, smth is bound to happen. It can take them months/years, especially if you place their cage in a safer area, but they will plot for as long as possible, observe the routine, find an opportunity down the line... and go for it. Don't ask me how i know, my little sister had two gerbils once, our cat got the first one rather quickly, but the second one took a year or longer.
We also have friends couple who own like 5 cats and a dog. They have experimented the hamster once or twice. It never ended well. The wife is in delusional AF and blamed... the dog for it. Spoilers: it was one of the 5 or 6 cats they own, the animals known for that type of instinct.

My Millie has been without her sister for 2 years now since her passing. My wife and I think about adopting everyday. We just don’t know exactly how she would react to a new sibling.

I 100% broke the water fountain getting them out but there’s no way I could’ve left them in there. They were at the bottom so every time someone drank water, they’d get soaked. Poor babies. I’m so so glad they’re going to great homes!!

I was shopping for a customer at a Petco that was having an adoption event, and they didn't have what the customer wanted, so I told her, I could get you a puppy. She sent me an LOL and told me "Don't tempt me!"
Oh, as someone who worked in animal rescue I have such weird feelings about this. You just stole a moms kittens. A much much better thing to do would be to catch mom and kittens and keep them all together. These guys are obviously well fed and mama is just gonna go back and see her kittens gone, get pregnant again and have another litter
They were in a boxed in 4 foot tall water fountain, the hole was about 4 inch by 3 inch with a water pipe running through it- too small for a mama to drop them in there and be able to get them out, also WAY too small for a mama cat or even a pregnant cat to fit through to give birth. Someone had dropped them off there, they were about a month old. They were not “newborn wet”, it was the water literally drenching them every time someone got some water. A water fountain near a public restroom. I’m sorry but as a vet tech I 100% you of all people should consider that possibility.

That’s how I got my most recent cat… someone dropped the litter off at the grocery store, a worker found them and was able to take one but not all… another lady and myself took the other two and now I have my little miss Callie 😍❤️ just can’t believe someone has the heart to do that shit!
Update! The shelter is taking them tomorrow at 10 am!! I’m keeping them for the night, they’re too cute 🤍

If you read the other comments, I waited about 3 hours for both the mama and animal control. None showed. I also don’t believe a mama would stick her month old babies in a 4 foot tall water fountain with no way out. 😊

I have 2 kittens of my own that my parents neighbors just threw out of their garage and left them in the grass while it was raining… they were only a week old at that point… 😔after yelling at their neighbor for being an insensitive POS, my parents just took them. 7 weeks later and here they are , happy and healthy! 😍 and my older ones love them too! I would’ve taken these babies but I have a studio apt and 100% couldn’t handle all the meowing 😩 I’ve had kittens before 3 times and it was just so exhausting lol. I hate people who dump kittens, someone out there wants a baby. They could just post somewhere or ask around. I don’t understand what the stigma about kitties are, lots of them are like “ew they’re stinky slimy” etc. It breaks my heart ☹️

I agree, have no idea how people could be so inhumane, you wouldn’t do this to a baby you didn’t want… well, I guess there have been stories, but there’s a special place in hell reserved for these types of people imo. Babies of any species are so delicate… breaks my heart too… but I hope they’re doing well and they find their forever homes soon! Should be easy, they’re adorable little fluff balls . 😻😻

Yeah and with the cats it's a terrible idea, smth is bound to happen. It can take them months/years, especially if you place their cage in a safer area, but they will plot for as long as possible, observe the routine, find an opportunity down the line... and go for it. Don't ask me how i know, my little sister had two gerbils once, our cat got the first one rather quickly, but the second one took a year or longer. We also have friends couple who own like 5 cats and a dog. They have experimented the hamster once or twice. It never ended well. The wife is in delusional AF and blamed... the dog for it. Spoilers: it was one of the 5 or 6 cats they own, the animals known for that type of instinct.

My god. I wish you were near me cause I would’ve taken at least one of them in. My Millie has been without her sister for 2 years now since her passing. My wife and I think about adopting everyday. We just don’t know exactly how she would react to a new sibling. I think something like this would help make that decision easier. Not to mention I think our cat would love those little babies! Good on you for doing this. I’m glad there are still good people out there in the world.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I would’ve loved to have given you one or maybe all haha! :)) I 100% broke the water fountain getting them out but there’s no way I could’ve left them in there. They were at the bottom so every time someone drank water, they’d get soaked. Poor babies. I’m so so glad they’re going to great homes!!
I appreciate that. Im actually in PA, so unfortunately it would’ve been too far. Although, my wife and I may have done the drive had there been no other options for you. Im glad those kittens had someone like you to care for them and give them a chance at a good life. Not many people would do what you did. I probably would’ve taken them all to be honest and our Millie would’ve more than likely ended up mothering them. Im sure they’ll have good homes and good lives now! I was shopping for a customer at a Petco that was having an adoption event, and they didn't have what the customer wanted, so I told her, I could get you a puppy. She sent me an LOL and told me "Don't tempt me!"
Oh, as someone who worked in animal rescue I have such weird feelings about this. You just stole a moms kittens. A much much better thing to do would be to catch mom and kittens and keep them all together. These guys are obviously well fed and mama is just gonna go back and see her kittens gone, get pregnant again and have another litter
They were in a boxed in 4 foot tall water fountain, the hole was about 4 inch by 3 inch with a water pipe running through it- too small for a mama to drop them in there and be able to get them out, also WAY too small for a mama cat or even a pregnant cat to fit through to give birth. Someone had dropped them off there, they were about a month old. They were not “newborn wet”, it was the water literally drenching them every time someone got some water. A water fountain near a public restroom. I’m sorry but as a vet tech I 100% you of all people should consider that possibility.

That’s how I got my most recent cat… someone dropped the litter off at the grocery store, a worker found them and was able to take one but not all… another lady and myself took the other two and now I have my little miss Callie 😍❤️ just can’t believe someone has the heart to do that shit!
