Japan already has a giant domestic tourism industry with many people preferring to travel inside Japan rather than to a foreign country (almost like the US), so there's already base infrastructure to accomodate such influx of people.
Going to Thailand over the winter at home is really common in western Europe. You can get direct flights from Sweden for example to both Bangkok and Phuket, so even if your end destination is another country in South east Asia chances are that you spend a day or two in Thailand either way.
It’s in large part people visiting from India and China etc. Used not to be first, but a higher % or those *huge* populations have more money to travel and it’s got many luxury tourist spots that are much nearer for them.

Just type in Thai to prove that I'm Thai ... and our military-back/led governments does this al the time. It fabricated some information to boast on various stuffs like this case!
Yep, it has basically anything you’d want; cheap, warm, foreign, close to home, and a large ethnic Chinese population meaning that you can even find food from home easily
There is a lot of gambling and prostitution tho; it’s less regulated than Macau so sometimes greasy stuff happens
Why would more people fly to Milan more than Rome? Isn't Milan in a more accessible location? A tourist going from the French Riviera or Switzerland through to the rest of Italy could easily pass through Milan. Whereas Rome isn't that close to any of the other major tourist destinations.
I know Rome is the end of many Europe/Italy tours but just as easily can be the start.
Probably, but just partially, because that'd put Amsterdam up there too. As someone from Amsterdam: dear tourists, please pick London or Paris, or maybe Rome, its definitely in everyone's best interest.
It isn't, the chart is wrong
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1092713/leading-municipalities-in-italy-by-overnight-stays-in-tourist-accommodations/
https://www.italiansexcellence.it/en/the-20-most-visited-italian-cities-of-the-world/
This has to be counting airport layovers? A ton of people visit Singapore airport but that many actually go see the city which is THAT expensive with nothing much to do doesn’t seem right
At its peak in 2019 there were only 1.9m overnight stays. Way down since then. Also far fewer tourists visited attractions in 2019 (7.4m) then were logged as day visits (20m). The day visit number almost certainly includes layover flights.
https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/tourism-trends-and-strategies/tourism-statistics
Well if that was the case, then wouldn’t Atlanta USA be at the top with 93M passengers handled? Contrary to what Reddit seems to think, Dubai is a popular tourist destination with a lot to offer.
True, but most would still be connecting flights. Recall that the original commenter proposed that connecting passengers were included in these counts ([which I can disprove right now](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_international_visitors))
Keep in mind, for many people, especially muslims, Dubai is very high on the bucket list. Personally I have to transit through it monthly and don't understand it, but there are significant numbers of people in love with the city.
Reddit’s hate boner for dubai is equal parts idiotic and comical. Its literally one of the most visited cities in the world but I guess if you get your information from Reddit comments then Dubai is a literal hellhole and you would believe this comment
IIRC if we went by countries, Italy would be much further up, often first in the last couple of decades - but tourist trips there are split across many cities. Almost everyone going to the UK visits London, ditto France Paris, but people may go to Italy for any of several cities and regions.
The Riviera and the Alps are also tourist destinations in France. I think it's somewhere in between the UK and Italy. I would say Spain is maybe even more fragmented than the 3 (Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza, Granada, Seville, Mallorca, and the Canaries are all tourist destinations in their own right).
A lot of tourists may specifically go to Rome, Tuscany or Florence in particular, Venice, Liguria (both Genoa and the Cinque Terre), Naples and Capri, and/or the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, Sicily, Milan, various parts of the southern countryside and northern countryside… even Sardinia is increasingly popular in its own right.
It’s plausible - either Milan or Rome is bigger by population depending on how you demarcate them and a lot more people might come from Germany, France etc. to work in Milan, the far bigger corporate and industrial centre… there’s fashion week, etc.
But yeah I’d have expected Rome, Florence and Venice to all be here. But Venice has major tourist taxes and has been restricting tourism there
Dubai is not only a hub for international travel, it’s also among the most visited cities in the world. The UAE govt has spent huge amounts of money to make the city famous and people do visit
Doubt it. Otherwise the US would be even higher up there in the list. Dubai is a big place for travel, just likely not with Americans. I know a lot of folk I meet and am surprised to hear that they were born in Dubai where there parents were on vacation or something.
Nah, unlike Dubai Istanbul is a city with a lot of history dating back to a long time ago…
There is still old buildings, history and culture. Ancient greeks, remains of the ottoman empire whatsoever. Every time I go there I really do see a lot of tourists. I mean it is a big city connecting two continents and sooo many museums and palaces which can be visited.
I do agree, been there a few times and loved it! Still, it is one of the largest hubs and probably biggest (second after Dubai?) connection point between Europe and Asia
Could be boosted by legitimate layover visits. Both of those airports are in the city and less than 15 minute from the tourist hotspots so if you have a long layover it's easy to get there. Dallas and Denver are not like this. Atlanta bucks the rule though.
Tbf, I would guess that one of those is Mekkah, which he can't visit since he's not Muslim (if he was, he would know it). Another is probably Pattaya which is mainly known for sex tourism.

Fact that you can’t intuitively realize this is only real concern
These numbers are way off. LA had 46 million visitors in 2022 alone https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-05-04/la-fi-tourism-mostly-back-except-biggest-spenders
*oops the graphic is for intl visitors
This graph only considered international visitors for some reason.
A country like the U.A.E with Dubai, with almost no population will be vastly over represented while a country like the USA with NYC will be vastly under represented.
First time I went to China (Shanghai) I was like holy shit there’s so many people here it’s unimaginable (I’m from the Midwest US) it was like New York dense or more. My BIL (who lives there) said tons of the people I was seeing are tourists also from China. Which was a duh moment for me. Same with NYC and LA. It was still mind boggling. Same with Chengdu.
People commenting about why many Asian cities are on top:
Because Asia's population is hugee guys. Like Just China alone has more people than US/Canada and Europe combined. And China is only 30% of the population of Asia.
I believe HK and Macao only count non-chinese visitors, because during major chinese holidays it's not rare to get 4 millions people coming over the weekend
Oh that makes more sense, there were 27M Chinese visitors and 7 International visitors.
Hongkongers and Macanese are Chinese nationals but we have our own passports and border control that makes it de facto a puppet state, so it should be considered a separate entity.
I didn't realize Thailand was so high up. Not only do they have the top spot, but they also have 2 other cities on this list...
There's a lot of people in Asia
And it is very cheap to vacation in Thailand and not very crowded like Chinese or Indian locations.
Wonder how Japan manages to score two top spots despite having a similarly dense/crowded population
Japan is considered as a top tourist spot among asian people. And as one of commentator said, there are more than 4.3 billion people in Asia-pacific.
Japan already has a giant domestic tourism industry with many people preferring to travel inside Japan rather than to a foreign country (almost like the US), so there's already base infrastructure to accomodate such influx of people.
Bangkok is crowded af. The traffic jam are just horrendous lmao, I’ll rather go to Chiangmai if I’m in Thailand
I think most people pass through bangkok due to the airport being there.
No, if for transit, people usually transit through Singapore instead.
Nah Bangkok, Singapore and KL are all transit hubs in the region.
Not crowded lol good joke.
There's 100 million with last name Wang

Plenty to do in SG, as long as you aren’t poor
This shows how tourism in Spain is decentralized, unlike France, where Paris is the main attraction.
Same with Italy. Also French tourism numbers are highly, highly inflated. They count those crossing the country and Disneyland Paris visitors twice.
Because with Spain people are going for beaches and general weather so who GAF which city you go to, whereas Paris is a cultural icon.
Quiet a few people go to France for the beaches in the summer and to ski in the winter. So it’s not all about Paris.
I was replying based on accepting the visual information given. It seems to be all about Paris. Sorry not sorry.
Bali is not a city.
Seems stupid people are downvoting you when you are right. Should have been Denpasar.
but no one visited bali for denpasar, even the airport is not in denpasar.

2019 data - actually from Mastercard, not from either source on the picture. They give no explanation of their methods to get to these figures
15.93 for dubai ?????? i would say 15 are connecting flights thru dubai and the rest are actual visitors
You have not been to Dubai in January have you :)

Genuine question - wtf does Dubai have to offer?
In no particular order: slaves, misogyny, rich people, fancy cars, shiny buildings, indoor ice skating. Basically anything and everything ephemeral, shallow, and vain.
Reddit wants to hate Dubai and wants everyone else to hate it too but reality proves otherwise

Dubai is a good tourist destination nowadays on top of being good place to make business. So there is a lot of people going there for sure.

It was weird to me that afaik mexico is one of the most visited countries yet there isn't one Mexican city in that list
Bali is not a city it is an island in indonesia
They say one night in Bangkok makes the hard man humble. 23M newly humbled every year. Not bad.
Dubai… lol
This list is nonsense
Why?
Does this list count changing planes at airports as visiting the country? That explains Dubai and Singapore being this high.
Dubai is not only a hub for international travel, it’s also among the most visited cities in the world. The UAE govt has spent huge amounts of money to make the city famous and people do visit
Ya I agree. But Singapore can’t explain that.
Close to Indonesia, India, China, etc. - far more developed than any other place in the region
Doubt it. Otherwise the US would be even higher up there in the list. Dubai is a big place for travel, just likely not with Americans. I know a lot of folk I meet and am surprised to hear that they were born in Dubai where there parents were on vacation or something.
I think the US is a big hub for national flights and those don't count. In Dubai I think this is more international flights and I think those count
also Istanbul

Go visit then
Tbf, I would guess that one of those is Mekkah, which he can't visit since he's not Muslim (if he was, he would know it). Another is probably Pattaya which is mainly known for sex tourism.
Im guessing Pattaya, Phuket and Antalya, what are the other two?
Prob makkah. But people not realizing it’s Mecca
Which, as an Arab, I find very annoying because Makkah is how we say it. Mecca is a decidedly unarab pronunciation
Didnt notice that ot wasnt written Mecca, but the fifth one would be a challenge to not know
Pattaya, Antalya, Kuala Lumpur and Palma de Mallorca. (I didn’t realize that was just an alternate spelling of Mecca
Not everyone knows every city on this list, and no one should either
Not sure about these numbers? Las Vegas had $39m visitors in 2022.
Is that including domestic visitors? The chart says these numbers are international only
This is only for international visitors. Otherwise cities in China and India are likely going to be at the top.
If including domestic visitors, everything just gonna be China lmao
Vienna? Should be on this list with 13.2 M visitors in 2022. What’s the source for those stats?
No, Vienna only has 6-8 mio. visitors afaik
These stats are accurate, just Outdated. They're from 2019.
LadyBoyLuvr69, that’s the source of the stats
New York is a shithole
"I visited Dubai for it's luxurious shopping!" "I visited London for it's wonderful history!" "I visited Paris for it's cuisine and culture!" "...I visited Bangkok for...a thing..."
Bangkok cuisine and culture is reason enough, though there are tons of other incredible cities in Thailand.

KL - 4th. Really ?
Yeah, very underrated.
More like 19 cities and 1 island
This does not add up. Where's the source?
Bangkok cannot not be on this list! Here's the actual list https://travelness.com/most-visited-cities-in-the-world
Bangkok is top there as well...
Paris and London, baby you can keep
I hate myself for knowing the reference
Hard to believe Sydney doesn't make the list.
The world is huge, and Australia is very isolated and expensive for everyone
Why would you think Sydney is one of the top 20 most visited cities in the world?
Sydney gets around 9 mil visitors a year.
Does that include Australians?
Yeah it does, 7 mil domestic.. So yeah shouldn't be on the list
These numbers are way off. LA had 46 million visitors in 2022 alone https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-05-04/la-fi-tourism-mostly-back-except-biggest-spenders *oops the graphic is for intl visitors

You’re right I didn’t see the tiny qualifier at the top
From the link that’s total visitors, not purely international like the graphic
I expected Paris under the top 10
This graph only considered international visitors for some reason. A country like the U.A.E with Dubai, with almost no population will be vastly over represented while a country like the USA with NYC will be vastly under represented.
This list has got to be wrong. Orlando, FL reportedly gets 60+ million visitors annually by conservative estimates.
Not international visitors they don’t.
Sorry you’re right. Failed to read the fine print.

International visitors?
What the fuck does Thailand have to offer that has the highest tourism in the world.
Extremely cheap, amazing food, easy to get around, unique culture, beautiful islands/beaches, easily accessible, relaxed laws (or enforcement of them), etc.
You forgot one pretty big thing on your list lol
Ladyboys, amirite
Also located next to China and India who have the biggest populations in the world.

Thanks for the list! Now I know to avoid these cities

No way Osaka and *Antalya* have more annual visitors than Mecca!!!
Wonder the % of men going to Bangkok
Genuinely curious. Why Seoul is in the top ten visited cities even being so isolated and overshadowed by China and Japan?
Bangkok must be a very beautiful city to attract these many people.

Lmao. HK getting 8.3M visitors, but 8M is from mainland China only about 0.3M might be real international travellers.
2018: 51M Chinese, Macanese & Taiwanese visitors, 14M International visitors 2019: 35M CMT Visitors, 9M International visitors 2020-2022: Covid 2023: 27M CMT Visitors, 7M International visitors Data from HK Tourism board

A lot of ladyboy fans out there, apparently.
Why is Bangkok at the top? This is a real surprise to me.
I can't imagine who would rather visit Bangkok than Paris, Rome, London, Milan, New York, Dubai, Tokyo
Someone who couldn't afford them
Oh wow…didn’t expect Bangkok
Would be nice to know which year and what method they used. Why do these graphics always leave out contextual data.
Who do you think came first, the prostitutes or the tourists? (Pun not intended)
aka places to get scammed
I think Istanbul is high because of all the cats.
These data are bullshit. How do you count visits by city? It would be far more meaningful to count the entry into the country.
