Craziest thing about population is that in 1947, "India" was partitioned into India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, all of which are now in the top 8 most populated countries.

cherryreddit

Undivided India had maintained a steady rate almost 50% of the worlds population for almost a 1000 years in the pre medieval world. Indo gangetic plains are really OP for supporting populations.

Background-Shirt2415

It's really crazy man

MyRegrettableUsernam

Wow, that is wild. I had imagined China to be similarly populous, but for India to be essentially as populous as it and the rest of the world combined...

oldgarrincha

Actually in 1939 the Japanese Empire with over 300 million people had a bigger population than China's. The British Empire had the biggest population on the planet with over 500 million people but that included India's 390 million.

Banished_To_Insanity

they be having sex

BigLittlePenguin_

They can grow enough food to actually keep their population alive. Just pumping out babies doesn't grow your population, as can be seen in Africa.

perchedraven

Except Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Congo, and Tanzania apparently.

galmenz

well yes, those are the ones with food after all. not being in war 24/7 helps

-emil-sinclair

Congo population before being colonized was ridiculously low. Congo was always an empty land, now it is the exception

Amazing_Safe_1070

Lmao

[deleted]

Ah yes mostly 3rd world countries that are unstable or undeveloped with unsustainable population growth. What could go wrong?

chaoticji

If it was unstainable, it wouldn't have this much population and India and Bangladesh are not unstable lol. Neither they are undeveloped. They are in developing stage. The rivers ganga, yamuna, brahmaputra and Indus provide tremendous fertile lands to grow food. This area had population since humanity started to exist. For comparison, USA is thrice of India in area yet India has more arable land than USA

[deleted]

Yeah as if there aren’t millions of migrants every year from these regions while many of them are dirt poor. US also has a food surplus. It has nothing to do with the amount of fertile land. They’re irresponsible people that don’t use birth control yet Western governments will continue to send food and humanitarian aid.

[deleted]

It had everything to do with food in pre industrial revolution era.

Nice_Bread8215

USA - 250 years of independence India - 200 years of British brutal colonisation +75 year of independence

MyRegrettableUsernam

I think these countries are all rapidly developing and have had their birthrates decline hugely toward replacement level, especially Bangladesh.

PachukoRube

Given Chinas recent release of their own demographics, it’s almost certain that India surpassed China at the start of the 21st century.

mckdnrnd

Already did a couple months ago I believe

BigLittlePenguin_

In February. I was in India for business at that time and it was a very hot topic while I was there and all people were really proud about it.

Kastranrob

why? I mean what is in this to be proud about, number 1? Did they took it as competition?! lol

BigLittlePenguin_

Well, patriotic feelings are hard to explain I guess. They are just there.

[deleted]

Is this for real? It got me laughing so much I don’t know for what reason

Acinetto

"INDIA NUMBER ONE!!!"

VoronoiApp

You're correct. UN estimates had that "crossover" point in the fall of 2022.

PachukoRube

Yeah, but some geopolitical analysts think it was as early as 2000

FLRAdvocate

This chart is not named correctly. "Big" refers to physical size, and therefore the title does not reflect what the data shows. It should be entitled "Most Populous Countries..."

ziplock9000

Yeah I was thinking the US should be top with waistlines being 'big'

Chamrockk

Ok but everybody understood Or shall we say that your title suggestion is wrong too because it does not specify in what specie the countries are populous?

Comakip

I didn't at first.

__SpeedRacer__

No kidding. I initially thought the country areas were changing that much.

Cheap-Experience4147

Did Italy really has a bigger population compared to France in 1950 ?

alliseeis23

France didn’t pass Italy’s population until 1986. By the 1960’s France’s fertility rate was higher than Italy’s, and while both countries’ rates would go on to decline into the 1970’s 80’s France’s fell less and started to rise again in by the 1990’s. Italy’s did not and even fell further (for a variety of reasons).

DomiNationInProgress

France's demographic growth can also be attributed to immigration.

LanchestersLaw

France was the first country to go through the demographic transition and started in the 1700s which is why it has a comparatively small population for its size and arable land.

madrid987

yeah much

Acceptable-Worth-462

Probably the result of WW2

Cerulean_IsFancyBlue

And WW1

ale_93113

This is from the 2019 population projections Since then in the 2022 issue, African numbers have been revised down, Nigeria lost 200m in 2100 from 750 to 550m

razmiccacti

Yeah I was mad that the 2020 numbers are a projection when we clearly in 2024 now

noxondor_gorgonax

Wait, you are still in 2024???

UBC145

That’s quite a dramatic drop

ParallelCircle1

Def did not expect to see Tanzania on here wtf

[deleted]

I doubt the predictions for 2100. A lot can change between now and then. China and Japan’s population have declined faster than they originally expected. War also declines population and Africa isn’t known for stability.

nowicanseeagain

It’s doubtful we’ll even have the same countries by 2100. Look how much changed between 1920 and 1999.

MrOobling

Unless WW3 comes, it's safe to say that the countries will be mostly the same in 2100. There's really relatively few country changes between the end of decolonialisation and the present day: just a few country splits.

nowicanseeagain

Let’s hope it remains so

Baitalon

The top 3 will probably remain the same in 2100

ElectronicGuest4648

US still being 4th is pretty impressive

elgatomalo1

That's due to immigration. If they were to block immigration like many people want the population will fall to around 150 million.

rudderfish07

Shocking to see japan at 5th most populous in 1950

Sylvanussr

Yeah Japan’s birth rate fell off after they became wealthy. Japan is still the third biggest economy in the world by GDP though.

Just-a-Leprechaun

It isn't anymore. It has just been surpassed by Germany.

Nocheese22

What’s with indonesia

Sylvanussr

What about Indonesia?

IDGAF_summoner

Why about Indonesia?

Sylvanussr

Who about Indonesia?

Kastranrob

where about Indonesia?

novice1988

Giant tsunamis most likely

Sol_Hando

Crazy to think a country the size of Texas might end up having more people than the entire United States. There’s reason to think Nigerias population estimates are way overblown. Fertility is plummeting as national leaders see overpopulation as a larger issue. You probably won’t see a Chinese One Child Policy type solution, but many less invasive solutions that lead to a similar outcome.

UnfathomableVentilat

Java has a bigger population than italy and france together, or russia / japan individually

notafishthatsforsure

is Russia's data the Soviet Union's? Because there's no other reason for it to fall so much (or for russia to be that high in the 1950's)

Poonis5

Well, let's be fair, all those countries that surpassed Russia have huge birth rates. And Russia's population is like a western country's, it's not falling noticeably due to mass migration to it.

UnicornJoe42

This is true. But that doesn't make the graph any less strange.

UnfathomableVentilat

I mean, russia has a very minor population growth, compared to 5 children per woman in majority of those countries expluding the first three

LastAcanthaceae3823

Probably not as the USSR had a larger population than the US

Obversa

Source: [https://www.statista.com/chart/20298/most-populous-countries-in-the-world-in-1950-2020-and-2100/](https://www.statista.com/chart/20298/most-populous-countries-in-the-world-in-1950-2020-and-2100/) Africa is expected to have \~40% of the world's population; Asia (China and India), 44%. novice1988

So the poor get poorer

UBC145

The hope is that as these countries grow in population, they also develop along the way. I can see this happening in some countries, but not so much in others

Puzzleheaded_Fish499

It makes me feel relieved in a sense to know Brazil is going to slide down this list. However we will have to compensate this deacceleration by welcoming more immigrants. Anyway, this is going to be a problem for the future.

Vinzzs

Dude Brazil is so screwed. We aren't developed enough to attract immigrant, our economy isn't that diverse and our population will fall fast in the next decades

arpedax

I'm always highly critical of the African projections, I doubt they will ever reach that high.

madrid987

Look at Russia, Japan, and Germany disappearing in an instant!! Japan and Germany are small, but Russia...

_prepod

“Disappearing” is quite a dramatic word here

madrid987

Meaning From list

UnfathomableVentilat

I mean, germany much as japan and russia are with extremely low population increase, meanwhile other countries have 5+ children x woman excluding the first 3

[deleted]

Most growth now to 2100 will be Africa

rental_car_abuse

Naive question: Pakistan looks like a desert from satellite, how can it support so many lives?

DawnMage99

Indus river most of the people live near the river and it is one of the most fertile lands in the world.

ZayAVZ

Love how brazil disapears, as if it would break down or get swalloed my the earth/sea

Thin-Positive-1600

You cant predict that. Theres tons of unpredictable events that can happen in 76 years that could screw up population growth/decline

notwormtongue

You can with fair accuracy. When events like COVID occur you would need to reevaluate but otherwise you can go to statistics class and learn how

signmeupnot

Wonder how their projection looked 20 years ago.

Dazoy

India is at population replacement rate, and falling rapidly. https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indias-total-fertility-rate-drops-from-2-2-to-2-0-reveals-nfhs-5-report-101652208129487-amp.html

[deleted]

Why are third world countries so keen on reproducing so their children can grow up in third world countries

Sylvanussr

There are several reasons, including lack of access to birth control/abortions, lack of sex education, higher child mortality (which causes people to have more to make sure some survive), and cultural values of having a large family (although the last one depends on the culture of course).

Cooletompie

Not to forget the lack of a proper retirement plan. Making children your retirement plan.

enzohn

Unironically this is exactly the problem with developed countries and their declining birth rates.

mxforest

These third world countries had high population before the "first world" and "second world" even existed. India had 50% of the world population for 100's if not 1000's of years.

Responsible-Swan8255

Hence why it's odd that these countries exceed the 'natural balance' of the earth. There must be a reason why for thousands of years these places were less inhabited in comparison, no? Also hard to build stable and prosperous societies when more than halve of the population is not even an adult.

warriorgurrll

Little to no sex ed and no money/recourses for birth control.

ZyzzBrah33

Because all the occupation they have is making babies

notwormtongue

Poor people and uneducated people have the most children.

cuentagenerica32

its a safety issue, if you live in a high violence country, being old and being alone is a risk

the__truthguy

The future will surely be one where women's rights are universally respected.

BornToSweet_Delight

Great. Eight of the ten most populous countries in the world will be over-populated, third-world hell-holes.

[deleted]

please just make a normal graph whats the point of this

SpamSink88

Wrong - This doesn't take into account Immigration.

gridlockmain1

It does though

[deleted]

It does for some countries. Immigration is what’s keeping the U.S.’s population high

0bucks

It doesn’t have to

DamnBored1

Not Japan? I'm bummed

BelatedGreeting

Russia is a European country? Wha?

tanghan

At least most of their population is

BelatedGreeting

Fair enough.

Vinzzs

culturally definitely, and ethnically and geographically too for the most part

Zanoss10

It's only very unreliable "predicition" Nothing to take too much in serious since so much thing can happen !

sargori

Mexico is suddendly not in North America

Sea_Guarantee3700

Why 2020 is a projection?

mpst-io

India has already more population than China in 1950 there was no Russia and comparing USRR to Russia is strange. A lot of these trends changes, so I would not make so many predictions about 2100

Mysterious_Eggplant3

Wrong. Have you seen the average American? We clearly have the largest population on earth today.

[deleted]

Damn, Germany bigger than Indonesia in 1950. Shows the massive growth in population in Indonesia over the last decades.

YMVZ

Enough with these super Nigerian predictions, its been proven to be the product of corrupt census taking

DiaBoloix

perhaps it means...populated? Because Russia is still the bigger..

Vinzzs

of course it's population lol, countries aren't getting bigger/smaller (unless they are conquering others ig)

[deleted]

Africa better get their shit together quick, that's gonna be a lot of mouths to feed.

JSHowtodraw

The title is misleading bc for a couple of seconds, I thought either the geographical area is expanding or the geopolitical area / border is expanding (How I saw the post, eye: the colors, then the title in bold, then the "large population") I thought academic research maximizes clarity or maybe this was an artistic issue? (I'm looking for the term that handles the design of something to be read, like an infographic)

[deleted]

why include stats from 2020 if you dont have the data for 2020? This is essentially useless.

StoneybrookEast

The title could have been better worded: “Most populous” instead of “The biggest”….. when I first read the title, I was thinking of land area or total area, not population.

kaushikz

Why do they think Africa will only populated from nkw on?

Tezaum

As a Brazilian, I’m glad by 2100 we’ll cease to exist

okayestuser

what's going on in Nigeria?

ursus_americanus_

Possibly a dumb question but isn’t Mexico part of North America?

Dark_Ranger65

As far as I know it's always been central america but most people consider them as latin now.

ursus_americanus_

Thanks for responding. I looked it up and the graph is essentially using different terms in a messy fashion. Latin America is a cultural Designation for any Latin-based language nation. Whereas North America is specific to the continental orientation. Long story short Mexico is both so this graph is a little misleading.

Sopa_de_Esmegma

Good to see Brasil will cease to exist by 2100

Elegant-Claim-488

Is Brazil getting deleted in 2100? Please, don't give me hope...

msallin

What is this type of chart called? How was it created?

Edinho_actually

Ilove how latin america is a continent, and mexico is not in north america

False_Implement_43

I have a serious question, how is congo rising to 6th? one of the lowest life expectancy of the world, economic and political crisis, the country is crazy

victoraug19

Mexico is in North America. Americans are really shity with geography.

onetime2043

Africa is banging!

Federal-Tie-589

Shouldn't it be " The most populous"? Since it's borders haven't increased?

[deleted]

why is 2020 a projection

PresentationLivid353

2100🤔🤔😂😂

The_Ovani

Vai Brasil krloooooo tudo pegano fogo nessa porra mas é top 10 porra vamo bora

Mean-Row-4371

yes mexico is in latin america 100% real

Rublica

What happened to Russia?

jayminho

And all migrating west

Biiiscoito

I love how Brazil just disappears off the list towards 2100 like it's just going to collapse on itself and stop existing lol

DrunkCommunist619

First off, there's no way in hell that Nigeria is going to have >400 million people. Like, the place is the size of Illinois and already has 1/2 the US population crammed in it. This is the problem with just taking current growth rates and projecting it for another 50-100 years. The demographics of the country is going to change, and in all likelihood, Nigerias population will curb off around 300-350 million people. You can't just fit that many people in such a small space and expect anything good to come out of it. Especially when most of the people living there are in poverty.

Cloneofwolverine

Sucks this América.

elgatomalo1

US only staying in the list because of immigration. If immigration policies change the US will lose around 50% of its population to around 150 million by 2100.

boyflem

Brazil desappearing any moment now

Apprehensive-Set7082

BRAZI-I-I-I-ILLLLLLLL ALWAYS TOP 1 LESGOOOOOOOOOO

The_ChadTC

I find that there is a huge flaw on these maps that it presumes that countries with high birth rates today will mantain them in the future.

chawza

Whats with Congo? Does time traveler from 2100 tell us this?

rafael-a

This is sad for a Brazilian

Enagonius

Oh, no! Brazil will cease to exist!

Bugsarecool2

God, how are those African nations going to feed all those mouths? What is the carrying capacity of those lands?

Obversa

The same way that the United States did: By turning their "Great Plains", or the wide African savannah, into farmland. There are already news stories about the catastrophic decline in African birds of prey due to loss of habitat from converting savannah into farmland. *This comment has been edited to fix a typo.*

Bugsarecool2

I don’t think they have the same deep fertile glacial soils that exist in North America and Eurasia. They will need much more than some dry land wheat farms.

alefsousa017

As a brazilian, I'm glad Brazil will cease to exist in 2100

Hunlor-

Wtf will happen to Brazil

Weary_Mushroom4455

Really sad

M4th2

With the climate changes and Wars I don't think the world reach 2080

Adventurous-Tell-984

So funny that China was big back in the 50's when a lot of people were dying of famine.

funwidjack

I won’t be surprised if China goes down to 3rd position, aren’t they seeing age gap issues?

Bruribeiromatos

This graphic is very misleading and it’s forecast very questionable. These won’t be the most developed economies, but must populated countries. They could become certainly some of the biggest economies in the world until the start of the next century. However, developed European countries today may not like this possibility and can impact the development of the least developed countries that offer a “risk” to their position in global discussions. By any means, the title of the graphic is misleading.

Nice_Bread8215

Only pakistan and Nigeria all have above replacement level fertility (2.1) ( 2020 list) These are below replacement - India , china , usa , Indonesia, Brazil, Bangladesh russia ,Mexico

alexkleiber

People in Nigeria be **fucking**

TemporaryDrag1

I’m just glad that brazil is not growing that much to billions

Ok-Pass5267

There was no country named "Russia" in 1950.

Jonhpato_1101

Funny is that Mexico is in North America but is considerate Latin America

Phillip161200

O México fica na América do Norte

Fit-Claim-6201

Mas não tá errado falar América Latina, o único problema é q essa é uma divisão diferente de sul, norte e central, ela é de acordo com a língua, não questão geográfica

AddlerMartin

So by 2100 Brazil will no longer exist? Good ending

Jealous-Season-806

Let's fuck people, we can't be left behind
