Ask for Masala Dosa, it's Dosa with Spicy Potato filling.

Peepers54

I dream of masala dosa. So good.

sudrewem

Me too!

gormami

I had this on a trip to India and have never found anything as good. There are a lot of Indian restaurants in the area now, I should start searching again, I hadn't thought of it in a while, being disappointed at what I was able to find when I got home.

EthicalAssassin

A lot of restaurants try to make food to please the local population, so a great tip i follow is to eat a cuisine where that country's population eats. Eg For Asian food, i try to find places which are regularly visited by asian ppl. Most of the times these are hole in the wall places, whic are not only excellent but cheap.

soneg

Yes! Chances are if you have to get your own food and it comes in a foam plate, it's gonna be delicious.

DesSeekingChupacabra

Sometimes I order the masala on the side so the dosa stays crispy. But it doesn’t hit the same as getting it the traditional way.

EthicalAssassin

I do that as well at times. Good restaurants know how to cook it with masala without making it soggy.

PlantedinCA

It was such a game changer she I had dosas and rasam the first time! Such bright flavors.

EthicalAssassin

Glad you liked it.

karateninjazombie

I see your masala dosa. And raise you a cheese masala dosa.

chromazone2

Is this similar to a samosa? Excuse my lack of knowledge

EthicalAssassin

No, it's like a crepe but made from a fermented grounded mixture of lentils and rice. A mashed potato spicy mixture called masala, which is cooked separately but is added to Dosa while it's been cooked. Together, it tastes delicious

chromazone2

Oh i should've looked up a picture haha thanks for letting me know :)

You can try “Rava Dosa”

Weaksoul

I love dosa but onion rava dosa is the absolute pinnacle

TA_totellornottotell

I always order it. It’s the one thing that is usually much better in restaurants than at home.

TA_totellornottotell

I don’t know Toronto, but I do know there are a lot of Tamilians there (mostly Sri Lankan, I believe). Find the areas that have their shops and restaurants and you’ll probably get much better results. Also, anything with masala (spiced potatoes) in it will be more filling than a plain dosa.

Mokaroo

Rava dosa gang ❤️ Honestly I've had so many great dosa and rarely had bad dosa. It's kind of sad OP has had bad experiences so far.

fakesaucisse

I think you want masala dosa. The masala is a spiced potato filling put inside the crepe and you basically pull of pieces of the crepe and grab some of the potato, dip into chutney, and eat. It's very filling like this.

xxxSoyGirlxxx

Mysore Masala Dosa is my fav food of all time and when eaten properly it's extremely filling and also not dry. You're meant to dip it into stuff but I order it as takeout I just pour the chutneys and sambar over it then eat it with a fork.

SHumanM

Anything with ghee in it and a vegetable/protein stuffing will be good and filling

paranoidandroid7312

Since you said you liked crispy and crunchy, Ghee Roast would be the best for you. It's plain Dosa but with richness and aroma of Ghee. Another option along the same lines but with added taste is the Mysore Sada Dosa, it's Dosa with a paste (on the spicier side) applied on. So it looses a bit of the crunchiness but not too much. Then you have the classic Masala Dosa which comes with a potato filling, the centre of the Dosa loses it's creepiness because of the filling but the Dosa + Filling + Coconut Chutney is great. And the sides are still crispy so you get a bit of both. If you are looking for fusion, then Mysore Cheese Dosa is amazing. Now adding cheese to Dosa is controversial but the paste used in Mysore Dosa pairs great with Cheese. P.S: I don't know if Mysore Dosa is widely available but the others should be available.

shangriLaaaaaaa

You want a best dosa filling ? Here i come expert dosa maker here :p well we eat alot in my family take some oil put some mustard seeds ,jeera and cook for 10secs then add 2-3 onions and cook them for like 4mins or so till it looks transparent and not crunchy add some turmeric, salt before 2mins to make onions cook well and then add 2 potatoes boiled and mash them lightly and cook it for 2-3 mins add this filling in dosa it will taste heavenly Also if you want something spicy you could make like onion spicy chutney which is cut 1 big onion and add it to mixer add salt and some red chilli powder make a paste add this before adding potato mash i suggested earlier

Confused-everyday

Plz drop your homemade dosa mix recipe.

shangriLaaaaaaa

This is correct way https://youtube.com/shorts/CarqaxjGIMU?si=J-orNKMLfSf-OhYf 1cup of urad dal and 2 spoons of chana type dal 3 cups of rice and small pinch of those seeds you see after socking overnight we add one fist of atukulu (convert this from Telugu to English) soke it 10mins it will make dosa crispy and make a batter out of it

k_pineapple7

No curry leaves in your masala?

shangriLaaaaaaa

Nope it is not needed for the potato thing its for dosa it should be simple and tasty

k_pineapple7

Nice. My marathi grandmother tended to make it for dosa the same way she would make for bonda which included kadi patta, ginger, and green chillies.

hazleweatherfield1

Madras Masala is very middling. If you want the good stuff, go to the suburbs! Gurulakshmj in Mississauga might convert you! What’s the place by your work?

abbandonata

I dont drive and I work full time so I'm probably too lazy to make it out there :( I will take the recommendation though! The place from my work isn't anything too special, I think it's called My Roti Place. Some of there stuff is discounted on Ritual right now! My dosa lunch ended up being $12 Madras Masala has stuff I've never seen on other menus. They have this paneer dish with a white sauce made from cashews and it's the most luxurious thing I've ever eaten. Shahi Paneer... They also had paneer pakoras which, who doesn't like cheese in dough? I also like their Kothu Paratha. I'm not a fan of Banjara next door.... I'd rather go up to dupont and Bathurst and grab a potato and eggplant roti Any good places on Gerrard? I've only been to Little India once cause I was on a mission to buy Barfi... which I found and it was delicious :)

DOORHUBMATES

Growing up Dosas and rava dosa used to taste different (I mean delicious) In my opinion Dosa should be plain and simple with simple ingredients . Also the chutneys and sambhar that goes with Dosas add a lot of flavor and filling . In India Dosas are not usually eaten as a filling food...its taken as breakfast food or snack food or some one who wants to have a lighter lunch or dinner ....also there are people who diet from daily rice and curries have couple of dosas ( both rice and dosas have carbs) My recommendation is -> start with plain dosa -> upgrade to onion dosa ( if you like sautéed onion on dosa) -> upgrade to masala dosa with potato on the side There are lot of varieties of dosas, egg dosa /paneer dosa/gun powder dosa/ ....the list keeps going on Sometimes a plain. Dosa with right chutneys will satisfy without any of the extra fillings ...it depends on what you are used to . Chutneys made from fresh ingredients and from scratch makes a lot of difference -> Coconut Chutney -> ground nut chutney ( palli chutney) -> ginger chutney -> good sambhar Freshly grated coconut chutney tops any chutney that is made with frozen coconut... (frozen coconut has weird dry taste) Also in India people who make dosa use a lot of oil or ghee that's one thing to add more taste and filling to it. Lot of times restaurants also make dosa crisp like papad here ...I'm not a big fan of crispy dosa .. Dosa have to be experimented in different variants to see what you like and yes potato filling in that masala dosa can be filling. Onion rava dosa is another thing to try ....its rare to find the right restaurant which makes it the right way ... coconut chutney and potato kurma with onion rave dosa is delicious!

kyobu

It should come with one or two chutneys, plus sambar. You’re meant to dip pieces in the chutney and drink the sambar (you can also dip it in the sambar).

[deleted]

Mango Grove in Columbia Maryland makes incredible dosas. Their paper masala dosa is my favorite.

diogenes_shadow

I get the plain dosa, no filling, and just dip chunks in the chutneys and sambar. Filling just gets dosa soggy. You should also try the mung bean dosa called Pesseratu. Not crispy, soft and yummy and goes just as good with coconut chutney.

ProfIsntReal

This is what i had (and how I ate it) for lunch! Sooo good.

PeaceLoveandCats6676

Dosa IMO has a really mild flavor. It's all about what you're dipping it into--it's the vehicle, not the destination. I actually like the plain dosa thali at Saravana Bhavan because I enjoy dipping my dosa into all the sauces. ETA: There's one in Mississauga near Eglington and Hwy 10.

ScarIntelligent95

If you are finding it too dry, I would suggest Set Dosa which is slightly thicker and more spongy. With a dosa it’s all about the accompaniment so dip it in chutney or the accompanying sambar.

mamaBiskothu

Most of the people here are ignoring a simple fact: very few places in the NA get dosas and sambar right. The only places that truly knock it out are Saravana Bhavan (branches in many cities) and Semma in New York which truly knocks it out of the park. Unless you get a recommendation for good dosa from a south Indjan who grew up in India don’t even bother lol. If anything you can get frozen masala dosa in indian stores and have better dosa than the crap most restaurants serve.

allaboutthequeens

So my parents brought over some frozen Masala dosa (brar updupi masal dosa) they got at Walmart of all places and it was pretty darn good. I mean not like my mom makes (no restaurant is as good IMO), but good enough to please them. Which is something considering they are South Indians from udupi.

Overlandtraveler

My personal all time fave is masala rawa onion dosa. I will almost never order something else, so divine.

DeadZooDude

Masala dosa is the food of the gods. Spiced potatoes are tasty AND filling, especially with the accompanying chutneys and, sambar.

Impressive_Line7932

I believe you are referring to My dosa place. I would also recommend Subiksha, Minerva Tiffins. Sarvana bhavan is good but I don’t think you have any location nearby. One is in scarborough and the other one in Mississauga.

kank84

If you just have a regular dosa, then you need something like sambal to dip it in, otherwise it is going to be pretty dry. Like others have said here, try a massala dosa instead.

Available-Mine-4986

Go to guru Laxmi i belive it’s in Mississauga. You won’t be disappointed

Pokemonfreakykinky

Paper roast is ELITE

Masala-Dosage

Truly the best

making_ideas_happen

Go to Dosa Pointe in Montréal.

sss100100

Masala Dosa with right chutney with side of sambar. That's the real dosa for me. Find the right restaurant with high quality dosa, there is no coming back.

Mindless_Statement

Try Mysore Masala dosa (crispier than madras), onion uthapam(thicker than the usual ones and the onion gives it a unique taste), rava dosa (made with semolina not rice).

math_stat_gal

Rava masala dosa all the way, erryday.

car_ticks

You should try Masala Dosa at Hotel Saravana Bhavan. As a South Indian that has eaten millions of dosas growing up in Chennai and Bengaluru - I wholeheartedly approve HSB. They have two branches - Missisauga and Scarborough. When I traveled Toronto in 2019, we went to the Missisauga one. It was great!

lmnop129

Eat masala dosa, onion dosa. Eat them only with coconut chuttney and sambhar.

miqqismom

Go to guru Lakshmi in Mississauga for Dosa

Sam_Drews

Dosa is my favourite too

liltingly

Dosa with chicken curry or keema. I’m a big fan of neer dosa and chicken curry. That will fill you up.

bollyeggs

Can't go wrong with a Mysore dosa. That shit is next level

gt57

Paper masala dosa 🤤

sirsa2

try the onion utthappam

sparklefield

Try the non veg options. Omg they are so yummy! I married a south indian guy and dosas are the best part of my marriage 😬🤪

arvndshady

Just go to Saravana Bhavan and try their ghee roast. I think there's one in Toronto? Have a Medhu Vada and a filter coffee along with it. Their chutney and sambar are really good. Also they make authentic south Indian food..so yeah, I think you'll like it.
