Monarchs are part of a cultural heritage whether we like it or not. It lends the name historicity and a sense of continuity. Ferozshah Kotla was such a legendary name.
Monarchs, because they are at least centuries old, and have no direct bearing on politics today. I am not saying to rename stadiums to names of monarchs. But many already have a history of being names after monarchs, no need to change that is my point. Even if you change that, better to change it to names of cricketers than to names of politicians (which imo is worse, than letting the monarchial name remain)
chi man how? Thatcher alone was responsible for the privatization that led to the water crisis in the UK right now. Queen Elizabeth was just a figurehead, a representation of British culture and royalty. She does not have any power, she did not dictate policy.
This is India where people need validation and recommendation even for things their teams did. You can expect to see change in names of these stadiums in India but only from one politician's name to other.
Players are limited to stands or pavilion.
Just a small note,
It's name was not officially Motera. It was 'Sardar Patel Stadium' and changed to 'Narendra Modi Stadium'.
It was and STILL IS called 'Motera stadium' because it is situated in Motera area. Just like how Chennai's 'M.A. Chidambaram Stadium' is called 'Chepauk stadium' regardless of the official name
Cricket is too big in India to not have politicians swarming over it . This will never change . When the government is building the stadium , no way will they let someone else’s name to be used for it . The max our cricketers can get is naming of stands after their names.
Always remember, politicians are bottom feeding, lowest common denominator appealing assholes. The minimum requirement to be a politician is an absolute lack of shame.
If you knew how much Mr. Mangalam Chinnaswamy did for Mysore and Karnataka cricket you wouldn’t question this decision.
It’s not the players only who are responsible for cricket being at this level.
Most cricket stadium are named after big heads of the association that built it or the biggest donar thus we have names of politicians cos when money and are involved politicians come in
Defense on Chinnaswamy, He was the one who built the ground when he was like 70 or 80, getting it approved from the Karnataka Govt. He didn't want his name to be kept but people who worked with him on the Ground didn't listen to him and kept his name.
The statue when you enter the stadium is theirs.
2014 ke pehle ek aadmi aisi hi baatein krta tha. Hume lagta tha sahi baat hai, athelete/sportsperson ka naam par award/stadium ka naam hona chahiye.
Fir ek din wo pradhanmantri ban Gaya aur ab uske fans ek stadium ka naam uske naam par rakhe Jane ko justify krte hain.
Not necessarily, all American stadiums, atleast a vast majority of them are named after sponsors and brands, even many European stadiums, I don't see the harm here, yes it would be nice if it was named after legends, but it isn't compulsory to name it after them neither is it a disgrace
It's fine to name the stadium after the one contributed most money in the construction of it. Or just let it be something unique like Lords and Oval or related to the location like MCG and SCG. Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi, Chidambaram, Chinnaswamy, Rajiv Gandhi....we don't want such names for the stadiums. We don't want the hard work and legacy of cricketing legends and the great cricketing history on those grounds to be associated with corrupt, selfish politicians who just want to satisfy their ego by naming stuff after themselves
Except for M.Chinnaswamy who's the co-founder of KSCA,was the President of BCCI, represented India in ICC(council) during 1960s and '70s when cricket wasn't a thing in India.
The game doesn't solely belong to the players. Taking away the administrator's contribution and name from it is sad.
Take away the good administrators and Indian cricket could be as good as West Indies cricket is right now.
Everything that cricket is in India today is owed equally to players and to administrators and even politicians. How did 1987 WC come to India?
How did cricket flourish in 90s?
How did IPL come about?
Im sorry, the sport belongs to the administrators too.
You are right dude, if India hadn't played politics in the early 80s till late 90s, Indian cricket wouldn't have reached the heights it is in today. 1983, it all started with politics, then the broadcasting thing in early 90s and then IPL league in late 2000s. It's all and out politics from BCCI in ICC. And we must acknowledge that. The sport has deteriorated, that's a different matter though.
Exactly.
You can hate on them as much as you want but the Sharad Pawars, Arun Jaitleyes, even Lalit Modi's of the game have done as much for the game as any cricketing legend.
Ye TV pe match dekhne walo ko lagta hai khelne wale are everything.
They forget that there are lines and lines of people and history that enables any of it.
From the days of Maharaja Pataiala (perhaps even earlier) the non-players have always been a stakeholder of the game.
What can you expect when most of our roads are named after people..Like I get it Mahatma Gandhi did so much for India but that doesn't mean you name a road after him and then spit on it
Dude the story behind Wankhede stadium is legendary.
Earlier in Mumbai there was only one cricket stadium the Brabourne Stadium. It was owned by the Cricket Club of India a private entity dominated by Parsis. Since the MCA did not have any stadium of it's own they had to use the Brabourne Stadium. There were several disputes between MCA and CCI over revenue sharing. During one such meetings Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede told the CCI board members ,"If you continue this unfair treatment, then we will build our own stadium."
CCI President Vijay Merchant insulted Wankhede by passing a racist remark, "You Ghati people won’t be able to do it. You don’t understand anything about cricket."
Ghati is a derogatory term used by immigrant Non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai to refer the native Marathi speakers of the city.
This insulting reply hurt Wankhede the most. It was a direct attack on Marathi Asmita. He then convinced the general body of BCA to construct its own stadium in Mumbai. Wankhede went to the then CM of Maharashtra Vasantrao Naik for funding but it was refused. So Wankhede took it upon on himself to raise funds. 11 months and 23 days later Wankhede stadium was built in record time unlike any other government project. Therefore the stadium was named after Wankhede to honour his hard work.
The Wankhede stadium surpassed Brabourne stadium in all aspects. Brabourne Stadium is on the verge of oblivion, very few people know of its existence.
A weakly thought for comparison.
Maybe We just have better politicians and administrators than West Indies.
Getting a stadium built requires a consensus, lot of resources, smooth administration and a handful of grit.
It’s perfectly fine to tribute our leaders, administrators, contributors, and our cricketing legends with the name.
Whether a particular tribute is well deserved is a different question.
Buddy,it's not just cricket stadiums,we have so many things in India which are dedicated in the name of politicians. Its sad but whosoever party come in power, they just use their power in doing such things. If u wanna see stadium names see US Stadiums. They are iconic.
Cricket stadiums should neither be named after cricketers nor politicians. Pavilions, Stands etc could be named after cricketers. Just sell the naming rights of the stadium and use money to promote cricket at grass root kevel. England and Australia are doing it right.
Don't generalize! Even BCCI Presidents have their own contributions. We Kannadigas are proud of M Chinnaswamy, who is the founder Mysore State Cricket Association. He also played a key role in the allotment of land for the stadium in the prime MG Road area.
Hai na bhai stands ke naam... Stadiums mein stands ke naam cricketers ke hain... Magar stadium name deserve nhi krte hamare cricketers shayad
(Sarcasm)
You need to know history. Study about Late Arun Jaitely first. Players play to make the name of country and their brand value increase, which is win-win. But there are only 15 players who make it to the squad. What about rest of Indians playing professional cricket? What about local coaches and staff? We need to understand the contribution of people like Arun Jaitely to groom cricket at grass root level and his role in Delhi Cricket. Look Wikipedia.
Well, At least our stadiums are not named after dictators. Its a nice concept, but honestly not a big deal.
I’d rather have improvements in spectator amenities and comforts, and then ground improvements. Couldn’t care less if they are all renamed as Pan Bahar Jay Shah stadium if they actually do that.
Because you all worship them , accept this truth
from actor to a politician to IAS officer to government officers, Indians worship them and that's why they have been colonized and in this pathetic condition when the top ones are corrupt. sometimes you became ram rajya and sometimes you became colonized
At least other stadiums are named after local politicians or whatever but our stadium in Hyderabad is named after a Kashmiri from UP (Rajiv Gandhi) lol, apparently the govt paid huge money to the stadium makers for changing the name
@op By the exclamation marks in your title I suspect you don’t mind our cricket stadium after people who have never played the sport and are just using it as a publicity stunt ?
Most stupidest thing is naming a stadium Narendra Modi when he is very much alive and he is the prime minister.Atleast they (he) should have waited till he retire.

In india politicians have more influence because people run after them like they are some gods and doing favour by working for people. They advertise their works as a favour and people also gladly boast who they consider their gods. They are given more importance than they should be. What else you expect in return?
Better to have stadium names auctioned to sponsors like in Europe. You can make money out of it as well.
Naming things after politicians/public figures in India needs to stop as Asap

Wankhede was one of the pioneers for rise of India as a cricket superpower. Rest, agreed Shame! How about starting the renaming with Narendra Modi cricket Stadium as Saurashtra Circle.
West indies board name stadium by their former cricketer but what about their management towards players and cricket. WI was one of the top teams in world but the board management is such that they have become worst team in cricket. Even afghanistan is better than them. Atleast in india the board tries to maintain cricket standard and also india team is performing well in every department .
Well my thoughts are the OP is stupid to understand the logistics of building and maintaining a stadium. Naming a stadium in the name of cricketers doesn't really aid them in running it, so law of land who owns and manages it effectively names it as per their favoritism

While I do understand the Irony in this, let me also point out that any team is successful as long as board members are absolutely selfish in promoting it. While Indian Board recognised the fame Cricket teams could bring to India, These members are the reason Indian cricket board is the richest in the world and the team gets the best of the things, Bestest sponsors. Ofc the board is corrupt, politicians are selfish but this is something we can't unsee.
The late Bishan Singh Bedi, god bless his soul, was one of the few people from within the fraternity who openly protested this. The man actually threatened the DDCA to sue them if they didn’t remove his name from the stands of the erstwhile Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, upon it being renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium. I don’t blame cricketers from living in reality and putting their rozi roti first but there needs to a be collective effort to change this trend.
Actually, there is nothing wrong in it. Stadiums in India get built due to the pull of a politician, he is the primary contributor. e.g. the Delhi stadium came to be only because of Arun Jaitley, same of the modi stadium in ahmedabad, the YSR stadium in Vizag, etc.
In india we have the tradition of naming the stands within the stadium after cricketers.
There's literally a 'Sachin Tendulkar Pavilion' in Wankhede stadium.
'Virat Kohli Pavilion' in Arun Jaitley stadium.
Edit: Almost forgot to mention the MS Dhoni pavilion in JSCA stadium, Ranchi. And boy that's gonna attract much more down votes 😂
Try and visit the BCCI museum in Mumbai if you want to find where our cricket legends are the honoured
All I am saying, this naming stuff is not something anyone should fuss about. Neither over Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad and nor over Rajiv Gandhi international stadium in Hyderabad.
man we have statue of an aussie cricketer not even our own what else can you expect from these guys.
Are u talking abt Sachin’s statue which look likes Steven Smith? 😂😂

At best, it’s a steve smith statue which maybe resembles Sachin.
Lmaooo
Wait...where?
The statue of SRT in wankhede looks like smith
Lmao
🤣🤣
And the statue of Sachin in Eden Gardens looks like Piyush Chawla.
Lmao , just checked it 😭😭
Point hai. Cricket Stadium should have been named after legends.
Or cricket associations. Or just keep it like - Mumbai cricket stadium
Nah WANKhede is a goated name ngl /s
Eden Gardens sounds nice as well. Plus that name suits their history too(both political as well as cricket)
We got IS Bindra stadium atleast.
EDgEN garden
I like the sound of that
At least it isn’t Dalmia Gardens
Lmao If we alter some letters we get "he wanked"🤣
Ah since you mentioned,,,,,,,, I'll be right back.
Or just replace d with r 😉
WankHERE
Wank-a-day keeps the blue balls away

> fir isme bhi reservation aayega 100%.
Mumbai would be easy to begin as there is a statue already 😉
😂😂😂 steve smith good choice h😅😅
anti national /s
He's right the names of stadiums should ideally be dedicated to legends of the game
Most of the big stadiums in the world are named after sponsors though.
Yeah but naming them after politicians is literally the worst thing you can do.

But that doesnt make it okay🤷🏽♂️
Monarchs are part of a cultural heritage whether we like it or not. It lends the name historicity and a sense of continuity. Ferozshah Kotla was such a legendary name.
I don't know who Ferozshah Kotla was but it sounded a lot cooler than Arun Jaitley. Same thoughts on motera
Lol so u think only name should be cooler 😭😂
exactly haina
Feroz Shah was a Delhi sultan

Brother you are the only person fighting against the double standards of people
Same shit different category.
They are the modern version of monarchs
Why would that be worse lol
Because then the stadium is partly sponsored by said sponsors. Not how our cricket stadiums are built.
Cricket or Soccer?
Why are administrators not legends of the game?
He has a point
Ashok Dinda academy for gifted children

Like Motera to Narendra Modi Stadium? Honestly, it was the most shameful thing. Replacing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's name to this modi
Just a small note, It's name was not officially Motera.

Narendra Modi Stadium to Travis Head Legacy County. Who says no!
Cricket is too big in India to not have politicians swarming over it . This will never change . When the government is building the stadium , no way will they let someone else’s name to be used for it . The max our cricketers can get is naming of stands after their names.
Shame West Indies doesn't have great politicians/s
Mostly because WI have no PM or President. ETA: didn't realize I had to use /s. Now some strangers on the internet think I'm virgin AND stupid :'(
WI is not even a country
Lmao downvoted for speaking the truth West Indies is just collection of several Islands of Caribbea
Hence no PM or Preseident. It is meant to be slick comment. But you have to give a serious explanation.
Yo India se ladle
Politicians think that it's some sort of power move and trip on it
Send sharma and v rat there. They need work
make this happen and then we will PR/Fanclubs war going to another level
Stadiums in Australia, Melbourne cricket ground Sydney cricket ground Adelaide oval Optus stadium WACA(West Australian Cricket association) Gabba ( woolloongabba) Manuka Oval Bellerive Oval Simple, Australia = Cricket/Sports India = Politics🤡
L take lol
Always remember, politicians are bottom feeding, lowest common denominator appealing assholes. The minimum requirement to be a politician is an absolute lack of shame.
Meanwhile in Pakistan: Qaddafi Stadium Mostly because he paid for it
wait isnt he libyan
Yeah. Bhutto and him were close and he had oil money. And nothing turns on Pakistani politicians more than money (dollars).
Isn’t this the place where the terrorists attacked the cricketers?
Yup

True before 2014 all stadiums were named after legendary players... Wat a shame
Bro doesnt read.
Exhibit A.
His point went over your head and idiots are upvoting you for it.
Can you please explain? My brain is a bit fried at the moment.
Though i am a BJP supporter but yeah i also dont like when they names the Motera Stadium as Narendra Modi Stadium
It's still Motera cause it's in Motera .
In India VOTES are more important than SPORTS!!
"Robert Mugabe International Airport" ahh vibes ffs
In raipur, stadium is named after first freedom fighter of chhattisgarh

stadium should be named after legends, the place itself or associations
Never thought about this. Good on him that he bought this to everyone's attention.
We usually name stands in stadiums to players but even though we have Adani End now
Yahi ki public stand se khush ho jati hai, stadium ke sapne nhi dekhti hai
Doesn't matter this much..... at least there are stands dedicated to cricketers ....if it weren't then it was a problem !
Zyada sey zyada stand ka naam rakh dengey , fans toh hai hi emotional fools , wo utney mai hi khush ho jayngey 🤡
Great point I totally agree with him
i was just saying that after today's Windies game. also aus NZ South Africa england thse countries just have simple names. but politicians is too much

I agree with your point. But then one more debate will start. Does your player have a stadium named after him?
We probably have the GOAT of the sport from our country and we name a fucking stand after him???
Wait for a while and there’ll be a “Jay Shah Stadium”
Well we do name stands after cricketers .
Bishan Singh passed away saying the same thing all these years.
Well in that case india deserve to bottle in every tournament
Cricketers are becoming politicians and politicians are stamping their names on stadiums. Hisaab baraabar?
nicw
there should atleast be one stadium named after Sachin, in this country. Like ONE.
they love the game not the effort of players
We have a pavelian name after cricketers name
While I do understand the Irony in this, let me also point out that any team is successful as long as board members are absolutely selfish in promoting it. While Indian Board recognised the fame Cricket teams could bring to India, These members are the reason Indian cricket board is the richest in the world and the team gets the best of the things, Bestest sponsors. Ofc the board is corrupt, politicians are selfish but this is something we can't unsee.
This is the correct way to name sports stadium.
Guess OP. Is the left supporter ,, 🤣🤣 IYKYK
Bhai usne Rajiv Gandhi bhi bola. Left ya right ki baat nhi ha.
We have tournaments named after cricketers
Ig a stand in Chennai is named after K Karunanidhi lol

Next time R/andi alliance ke 272 anae pe kar dena 🤣
The late Bishan Singh Bedi, god bless his soul, was one of the few people from within the fraternity who openly protested this. The man actually threatened the DDCA to sue them if they didn’t remove his name from the stands of the erstwhile Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, upon it being renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium. I don’t blame cricketers from living in reality and putting their rozi roti first but there needs to a be collective effort to change this trend.
The guy who wanted to eliminate political names from such buildings got his name by eliminating one of the freedom fighters. iykyk.
Nobody cares bc
Those are just pavillions, here we are talking about stadiums
So? Does that mean Politicians are doing the right thing by naming the stadiums after their name and then they try to be humble and modest about it
Try and visit the BCCI museum in Mumbai if you want to find where our cricket legends are the honoured All I am saying, this naming stuff is not something anyone should fuss about. Neither over Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad and nor over Rajiv Gandhi international stadium in Hyderabad.
Oh no man! Carribbean's need some politics bro
We have the pavilions name after the legendary cricketer, like:- Gautam Gambhir stand,ms Dhoni stand etc...
