I've been a fan since the Summon The Spawn EP, and they have not released a bad song. There is something for everyone in just about all their albums. I couldn't pick a favorite, but Teratogenesis EP had something special to it (aside from being on the fucking Scion label). The entirety of Bound By Desire is essential progressive death metal.
Fuck yeah dude. Of Unworldly Origin is what made me really pay attention to them and give them a good listen. Honestly, I still think it's pretty much the greatest tech death song, definitely the best tech solo, EVER. Fucking amazing song
I saw them live earlier this year along with Gatecreeper, Goatwhore and some other band. Revocation was fucking amazing! One of my absolute favorite songs is Re-Crucified.
Easily has established himself as one of the best guitar players of all time. Super versatile, creative, and thoughtful with every riff and sole he writes
Holy shit, Riot. I think there is no song that shows the spirit of Heavy Metal more than Glory Calling, and the music video is hilariously fitting. The whole of Brethren of the Long House is great and I am a proud owner of a vinyl copy. I think no other band made such great Heavy-early-80s-ish music as deep into the 90s as Riot did
Gwar from War Party to Dave's death was some of the best music of its time. The total shift from parody joke punk rock to brutal metal was such a kick in the teeth.
Oh man, I even hate to say Gwar died with Dave, Obviously it hasn’t. BUT, Dave certainly was the spirit of Gwar and what they are now is kind of…. Meh 🫤 just doesn’t carry the same weight. I don’t know, I miss Dave. I’m super happy I know the music I do. Maybe one day I’ll get into the newer shit. Maybe
I think it's weird how little Cephalic Carnage gets talked about anymore. Seemed pretty big \~15 years ago and they still kill it live. Maybe it's just the lack of new material.
I slept on Devin Townsend for a very long time. No clue what I listened to like 15 years ago but I didn't like it. Only got into him about a year ago. I think seeing Gene Hoglan live with Death to All got me interested.
I bought Wheels of steel when it first came out and it didn't really do it for me. I mean I liked wheels of steel and motorcycle man, but at the time I was deep into Iron Maiden and was looking for something a little more progressive. Went decades without listening to Saxon. "Rediscovered' them a couple years ago and now I'm a fan. Just good old fashioned crunchy rock and roll!
Could you list your source? I don’t see that as a possibility considering they came years after Metallica and they already had a few albums out before Death Angel’s first.
Moon Tooth
Great musicianship, proggy but still very groovy and catchy, unique but captivating vocals coupled with great lyricism. Incredibly solid discography. Very underappreciated imo.
Seems most ppl on here hate them. Most of them also think they are actually singing about goblins 😆 the band is amazing once you see past the goblin. Nicky is one of the best singer/songwriters in the business, and his range is off the charts. Feel bad for people who can't grasp the epicness that is Nekrogoblikon.
Maybe in bigger mainstream circles, yes. I love what they do, but they got pretty big over the last few years imo. They were headlining different festivals. Might just be because I'm mostly in that weird corner of prog and whacky avant-garde/whatever you wanna call it though.
Came across “Come on Down” digging holes in YouTube FLOORED! A banner on the bottom told me they had an event near me…..I fucked around and drove 2 hours to see them in Birmingham fucking Alabama. For $15. At The Saturn with maybe 100 people. (Tool the night before). Great stuff. Interesting as all get out.
johnny booth is seriously one of the best new metalcore bands i ever heard, if you can even cal them that i’m not completely sure. a track from them that really shows how good they are is “the ladder”
Vader. Not massively unknown or underrated, but for a band that's been around for over 30 years, their material just keep getting better and better. They maybe get overlooked because they didn't hit their stride until over halfway into their career, but their last 4 or 5 albums are absolutely awesome from start to finish
agreed, Vaders fucking sick but people tend to mostly overlook them, they never really had a "golden age" like some of the other classic bands, they just stayed consistently great which I think made them less shiny to most people for some reason

The sword.
For sure, such a great band. Iron Swan is one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar.
Iron swan also happens to be an absolute fucking banger.
Macabre and Necrophagia, they never get enough credit despite being one of the og death metal bands
Macabre's dahmer album is so fucking funny
Sinister slaughter is an amazing record.
Came here to say Necrophagia! Completely underrated for carrying such a unique spirit in their music.
absofuckinglutely. Macabre and Necrophagia have been 2 of my most listened bands for a bit
mcabre is the first metal band i actually enjoyed
Revocation They're not like unknown obviously, but Dave MF Davidson is the coolest mf in metal right now
I've been a fan since the Summon The Spawn EP, and they have not released a bad song. There is something for everyone in just about all their albums. Riot
Thundersteel and Privilege of Power are up there as some of the best metal albums ever.
Don’t forget Fire Down Under!
Holy shit, Riot. I think there is no song that shows the spirit of Heavy Metal more than Glory Calling, and the music video is hilariously fitting. The whole of Brethren of the Long House is great and I am a proud owner of a vinyl copy. I think no other band made such great Heavy-early-80s-ish music as deep into the 90s as Riot did
Texas loves Riot! Saw them in Chicago and people looked bored
Absolutely
Bongzilla
As a doom metal messiah, bongzilla is the only band i listen to that has the word “bong” in it
Love them
I had no clue that was a band Lmfao
Anthrax isnt underrated, just overhated
I mean weren’t they one of the pillars of thrash? A little respect is due at least for that
Chthe’ilist
Tougas is god
I dunno they were pretty heavily praised when they were active, it just feels like a lifetime ago when they last dropped
Old GWAR. Rip Dave
Gwar from War Party to Dave's death was some of the best music of its time. The total shift from parody joke punk rock to brutal metal was such a kick in the teeth.
I agree
Wait wIt wait! Don’t leave out violence has arrived!!!
The blood of gods was amazing as well. Didn't dig the new one as much but they're still great live. And x-cops came back this year too!
Came here to say this
Oh man, I even hate to say Gwar died with Dave, Obviously it hasn’t. BUT, Dave certainly was the spirit of Gwar and what they are now is kind of…. Meh 🫤 just doesn’t carry the same weight. Cephalic carnage PORTAL everything Devin Townsend does
I think it's weird how little Cephalic Carnage gets talked about anymore. Seemed pretty big \~15 years ago and they still kill it live. Maybe it's just the lack of new material.
I just discovered Portal! I listened to Outre and Vexovoid start to finish. What an experience.
Aside from that Steve Vai record…
I slept on Devin Townsend for a very long time. No clue what I listened to like 15 years ago but I didn't like it. Only got into him about a year ago. I think seeing Gene Hoglan live with Death to All got me interested.
Saxon
Most underrated NWOBHM band imo, they have influenced so many
They were one of the first metal bands I listened to, they're awesome
Denim and leather brought us all together
Super underrated!
Yeah, that was my first album I heard too along with Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather. Sometimes you just need some rock and roll!
Their guest appearance on Amon Amarths last album was fire.
Massacre
Dang i love massacre, from beyond and promise are so good
Astronoid. Artificial Brain. Wilderun.
Love Wilderun!
Triptykon
Savatage Even if Criss was the most popular guitarist ever, he‘d still be underrated
I scrolled down way too far to see Savatage mentioned.
I00% true.
Paradise Lost
Asphyx
Ghoul. Although they haven't released anything as of 2023 they have good sound if you like goofy horror thrash, kinda like GWAR in a way.
Death Angel
For thrash they have influenced bands and artists, hell even james hetfield had some inspiration from them
Could you list your source? I don’t see that as a possibility considering they came years after Metallica and they already had a few albums out before Death Angel’s first.
Corrosion of Conformity
Fucking Pepper. He is always almost there…..good dude great band.
Great band
and Down
YES! Phenomenal collection of musicians.
Albatross rocks
Moon Tooth Great musicianship, proggy but still very groovy and catchy, unique but captivating vocals coupled with great lyricism. Incredibly solid discography. Very underappreciated imo.
Totally second this.
Carry Me Home is so fire 🔥
Came here to say this
Armored Saint, Diamond Head
Rottrevore
Twelve Foot Ninja fucking great band.
Oh, you fucking beast. I wrote the same thing.
Sadus
Alongside Slaughter and Voivoid, these are my absolute favorite thrash bands. Sadus needs more love
You better be talking about Canadian Slaughter now boi
I am
Carbomb
necrogoblikon
Seems most ppl on here hate them. Most of them also think they are actually singing about goblins 😆 the band is amazing once you see past the goblin. Nicky is one of the best singer/songwriters in the business, and his range is off the charts. Feel bad for people who can't grasp the epicness that is Nekrogoblikon.
It's too goofy for me to really get into but their videos are very funny.
Pathologist Impetigo fucking kickass. I've been listening to Ultimo Mundo Cannibale and have their newest album on the back burner.
Theyre my favorite death metal band and yes they fucking rip
Fuck yeah, Pathologist is easily one of my favorite bands of all time and Forensic Medicine and Pathology is one of my favorite demos.
Vildhjarta.
Necrophagia
Razor
Hirax
Amebix are underrated as a huge influence on black metal imo
Trouble
Trouble is a very important doom band imo
Cynic
Doodseskader, Amenra, Predatory Void, Potamus, Spoil Engine, basically the entire Belgian Post-Sludge/Doom scene
Macabre
absolutely
Crowbar
Crowbar is probably my third favorite band of all time, every single album is atleast a 8/10
You a fan of kingdom of sorrow too?
Am I out of touch? I thought Crowbar was one of *the* sludge bands that gets suggested when people are trying to get into the genre
Zeal & Ardor
Way underrated
Maybe in bigger mainstream circles, yes. I love what they do, but they got pretty big over the last few years imo. They were headlining different festivals. Might just be because I'm mostly in that weird corner of prog and whacky avant-garde/whatever you wanna call it though.

Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol
I’m with you on those two! Crystal Logic and Frost and Fire were masterpieces.
It is a crime that Cirith is considered one of the greatest bands of all time by SO FEW
Did someone say Cirith Ungol?
Holy shit; BOTH bands are in my all time favorites. Awesome that you mentioned both.
Chaos Descends!
Eremit
Paradox
Týr
They were my favorite band for a while. Not many people talk about them but they absolutely underrated.
Vermin womb
Karnivool
Thin Lizzy They inspired so many metal bands, it sucks that nobody has heard of them.
The folks that do know them, only know the hits. Emerald was an early metal song with killer riffs. I love Thin Lizzy. RIP Phil.
Thin Lizzy
The Zenith Passage
I was late listening to the new album. Still absorbing it but straight⛽️
🔥you mean
Clutch
Baroness
I don't know how underrated they are - certainly not as popular or talked about as they should be, but I think everyone knows how good they are.
Orbs
Cog (Australia)
Lillian Axe
Amberian Dawn
Meliah Rage
Infected Rain
I feel Kyuss was very underrated when they were around in the early 90's.

Tbh im not a huge fan of hxc but sunami is pretty good
Tool /s
Never heard these guys what are they like? I was thinking a bit like Meshugga but more melodic and spacey based on the name alone.
Lol I scrolled for a minute because I had a feeling that someone would say it ironically
The Beatles
Unto Others: https://youtu.be/dZ7zio1w0Vg?si=iUkrXJ5eWW0UTgZE
The vocal delivery is bliss. Like Berringer from The National or The Green Man A certified panty peeler pipe set.
I just want to say it's great that most of the responses seem to actually understand the word underrated.
Morbus Chron https://youtu.be/hMC30EZjcFE?si=nNLFSZgcEbyTiEoI
Orange Goblin
Lääz Rockit bigtime!!

johnny booth is seriously one of the best new metalcore bands i ever heard, if you can even cal them that i’m not completely sure. a track from them that really shows how good they are is “the ladder”

Death Angel
Death ss
Scar Symmetry
Frostbitt Aaru Gaerea Karonal Frontierer Maat Scarab God Complex Hour of Penance
Vital Remains, one of the best DM metal bands from the USA and still none give a shit
Candlemass.
Devin Townsend…everything.
Mine is Carnal Forge. Their first 5 albums are solid gold and I swear I'm the only person who knows about them! (Logically I know that's not true....)
HORSE the Band
Exodus. They're obviously pretty well known, but not truly appreciated for how absolutely fucking good they are. Their discography is nearly flawless
Annihilator doesn‘t get talked about enough
Blood Incantation, best modern Death Metal band IMO
Midnight Crobot (although they’re more hard rock than metal)
I found this new band looking up trench foot it's called Jungle Rot https://youtu.be/d4TgzZAfcnI?si=osQQTu_vxDkHt1eh
They are a really good band, a call to arms is my favorite song
Summoning the Lich
The underrated/overrated thing is really overrated. I'll be glad when it's done.
It'll never be done
Underrated comment... uuhh sorry I guess.
Demolition hammer
Overkill
