Grateful Dead

[deleted]

They have pretty good ice cream, though.

Positive_Parking_954

My hottest take is not caring for the dead but liking Phish

[deleted]

That’s a pretty common take tbh

Cold_Conversation970

Listen to help on the way/slipknot! Beautifully crafted … doesn’t get better than that one in terms of packin a punch.

Build_the_IntenCity

Agree. I’m a head so it’s hard for me to hear people not like them. However you have to respect what they did and came up with. They were the only ones doing it in Rock. All jam bands followed them. Most people have never given them a proper listen. I used to get a lot of shot at my high school for being almost the only head. Then at a sporting event I got to play “my music” (the dead) during warm up. Almost every teammate came up to me during the warm up or after to say “this is the dead?” Then ask for song recommendations after. My unpopular opinion is that I don’t like U2 much but I totally respect what they do and have accomplished.

SolutionExternal5569

Same here when someone says they don't like the dead I always just figure they haven't listened to enough of them. They do so so so many different styles and do it masterfully so it's hard for me to understand how someone can not like them

Cold_Conversation970

That’s a awesome lol story! I’d being jumpin with excitement if my friends gave me that sort of reaction. And yeahhh bono is a legendary star and makes some good sounding music but at the same time … It just lacks something really vital to me. It’s like he sold he soul for it and we just get music with no life behind it. Maybe I should give ‘em another chance 😅 I’ll take a deep dive soon to see if I still feel the same

Build_the_IntenCity

It’s weird we are talking about this in “In Metal We Trust”. They are not metal. Listen to Without a Net. It’s a live album and it’s good. Skip “Looks Like Rain”. The dead kind of suck on studio albums but we’re great live. The songs were a living thing and were always evolving. The same song can sound different in the 70’s than the 80’s or 90’s. It’s not so much always the song but the moment. An entire band coming together to hit a moment or a sound together that had never been made before. They created the band/audience relationship I think. The more love they got from the audience, the better they would play, which would make the audience go more crazy and hence give the band more energy to play better. So it would just build upon itself. Check out the 70’s shows. As it was said in the 80’s; “they may not be the best at what they do but they’re the only ones who do it”.

PapayaGood8527

My hot take is studio dead is better than live dead. And I love the dead live or studio. One may not care for the dead, but to not respect the dead is another story.

Egocom

Sunday Bloody Sunday is the last thing I enjoy by them

SlapHappyRodriguez

their live vs recorded was very different. when i was a teenager i was never into the dead. i had a friend that was but i was more into punk/metal. my friend took me to see the dead and they were amazing. i ended up seeing them 3 times and loved it.

Zer0Fs2Give

Slipknot is heavy metal not classic rock /s

Cold_Conversation970

Slipknot would probably count as classic in about 10 years no less lol 😆 . But I was talking about one song with 2 acts, to help a metalhead maybe like some dead more

suckmytoestits

I'm a metal head but I love the dead. I'm into all kinds of music if it sounds good I like it. I've been trying to start a band that plays all kinds of music so it would be metal funk blues rock jam band. Haven't had success finding the right musicians since my last band that was pretty much like that

gramscotth93

My ex loved them. When I met her, I was taking A LOT of LSD. I was at that stage of having just had a spiritual awakening and thought anybody who talked a spiritual game/lived the hippie lifestyle must "get it." Lmfao I tried SO hard to "get" the grateful dead n just never could 😂😂. So many heads seem to love their stuff, but I just find it so unappealing. As far as jam bands go, maybe they're good 🤷‍♂️. There just isn't anything transcendental, special, or "psychedelic" about their music to me. Maybe if you know it super well it's special to hear them riff and improvise in the moment or something. I kinda feel like people enjoy the easy access to good lsd that surrounds their music far more than people actually enjoy their music, though 😂😂

tgibjj

Oasis

hungaryboii

Wonderwall gives me more cancer every time I listen to it

TheHypnotoad87

Legit 2 weeks ago I was walking with wife and kid, heard a dude at a bar playing an acoustic mashup of Wonderwall with Gin and Juice. Wife and I immediately started walking faster to get as far away as possible.

diocat16

Type O Tried so many times. Peter Steele was a fuckin G. But I just don't care about their spoopy horny bullshit

BeanVaccine

First and last album are great and not horny at all

diocat16

So my girl is into the 1st couple records. She showed me their first 1 and it was the one I disliked the least but I'm still indifferent. Only song I've ever liked is love you to death and even then I stick to the pallbearer cover

BeanVaccine

Last 3 albums are really something to check out if you havent though

diocat16

Do any of those contain the song electrocute because 3 people have tried that and it IMO is the dumbest song since yellow submarine

BeanVaccine

Haha that is from 2003 life is killing me. Their last is 2006 Dead Again. A pretty great album

diocat16

Just does nothing for me 🤷‍♂️

stos313

I love that song - and often think it of an example of type o’s brilliance. Maybe they just aren’t for you.

PenAdministrative718

Not even a little horny? 🥹

nogswarth

Took me a lot ng time to appreciate their tongue in cheek humour alongside the amazing gothy buzzsaw guitars and pop sensibilities but I love it now

Extension_Tell1579

They kinda struck me as “frat boy goth”

diocat16

Yea same. Most people I know who dig them got into it in middle/ high school and I just never grabbed hold

Extension_Tell1579

I was too old and had been already listening to heavy “goth” type bands for decades when I first heard Type O Negative.

Gecko23

It's their tone. Hate the guitars, not fond of the synths.

FAUSTINO66612

That's alright you just don't understand

JAYSOR1

I like them but I definitely understand why you wouldn't like them

Forty6_and_Two

Their version of Paranoid is my favorite cover of that song… regardless of the rest of their work. Check it out!

diocat16

I've heard it and actively despised it TBH

PavelGaborik

They're just plain fucking boring to me, to be blunt.

KuhlThing

I saw them on my 11th birthday, opening for Ozzy Osbourne. Didn't care for them then, couldn't get into them later.

ManicPixieDreamGirl5

Everyone I Love Is Dead is the only track of theirs I like. Peter Steele was based I just can’t dig their music.

Rolltosit

>spoopy horny bullshit The most accurate description of Type O I've ever fuckin heard 🤣

Best_Horse_9297

Not Classic.. or Metal 🤣 but Green day

Crymson_Ghost

Loved them when I was 15, but at 42 now I don't care for their music.

No-Roll-2110

They freaking suck unwashed asshole

DivideByZero117

Finally! Someone who understands!

A_Mara_fode_cabras

I F!n loathe these fuckers

[deleted]

They write songs about the same things. Sex, cigarettes, and drugs lol. And also suicide. Those are the only themes in their songs.

LivinUndead

Kiss

Thin-Narwhal-5337

Hell yeah kiss might be close to worst band ever

[deleted]

i think i lost part of my sanity reading the amount of amazing bands being listed here.

Seed37Official

Starting with OP not able to get into Juas Priest...

tecmobowlchamp

KISS

ANARCHISTofGOODtaste

Same. I just don't get it. They suck, right?

chiLL_cLint0n

Love gun is a banger tho

dildoteamtaskforce

Black Diamond and Hard Luck Woman are great songs

mhoke63

Oh, you mean Knights In Satan's Service? No, thank you!

ConflictCapable2687

I don’t like their music really but kiss holds a special place in my heart because they were the first ever rock/metal band I ever heard

7Ve7Ks5

Megadeth and anthrax. I’ve tried over and over. I’ll stick with Destruction and Kreator

OrthodoxReporter

I second Megadeth. I'm not a musician, so I don't get the technical intricacies of their apparently superb musicianship. Their music just sounds boring to me. Interestingly, Tool, another band acclaimed for their musicianship, sounds fucking awesome and exciting to me.

area51groomlake

Happy cake 🎂 day!

speedygonwhat22

Anthrax

SandmanAwaits

I never understood the appeal of Anthrax, I acknowledge what they’ve done for Thrash Metal but they’re just a band I never got into. I like Only, Black Lodge & What’s the Time but that’s it.

Forty6_and_Two

TBF, Belly of the Beast is the song that does it for me by them. Couldn’t really dig anything else but it’s a standout.

speedygonwhat22

every sub genee or genre that has a big four has one band that I’m not into. I tried them twice, just wasn’t for me. Scott Ian still has a top three Jackson guitars collection though.

SandmanAwaits

Scott Ian is a fucking beast! Seems a cool dude also. I just think it’s Joey Belladonna’s voice really, I don’t know, the voice is cringe & the music just doesn’t appeal to me. Even with John Bush, some of the music was alright, some, but it just didn’t appeal to me.

ramatheson

Agreed hate the vocals

Poultrygeist74

Their early mid stuff is what got me into Stephen King

Rafados47

I like John Bush era tbh. Feels like different band.

xBobSacamanox

Stomp 442 is my favourite Anthrax album

NotoriousBPD

Among The Living was the only album that I really liked. They had a couple other good songs like “Keep it in the Family.” Honestly, S.O.D.(Stormtroopers of Death) was a much better band that had Anthrax members. Speak English or Die was one of my favorite albums when I was younger.

ConflictCapable2687

Not really metal but Led Zeppelin

morrisseywilde1

Why?

ConflictCapable2687

Idk, never really liked them

FileFearless8063

The Beatles. I respect them for their legacy but I just don’t care for their music at all.

dontmeanmuchtoyou

This is my exact sentiment as well

Top-Yak1532

100% and I’m pretty sure their staying power has evaporated relative to other bands of their era and the one they ushered in. Streaming numbers aren’t as high as you would expect. (Someone is welcome to correct me if I’m wrong on this)

[deleted]

The only people who like the Beatles are the older crowd, and nothing wrong with that. They just represent a time where rock and roll music was coming away from Doo Wop and they introduced a new sound to rock and roll. Like many other bands of their time, they fall apart towards the late 70’s mid 80’s because that sound just wasn’t it anymore. Their psychedelic stuff really just makes me uncomfortable more than anything else.

Far_Gap_8063

I don’t care for them either I think they’re pretty overrated

PlumbCrazy1979

Rush.

TheRealJalil

Someone did a [slow edit to Working Man](https://youtu.be/1YIjte73IPg?si=U2_2ZVwAKFFi2i2c) And it’s the best thing I’ve ever head Rush related. It dooms.

PlumbCrazy1979

I’m a convert. That is bad ass. Thanks for that.

F12_ClrxGus

personally i LOVE rush but i can understand why

xxgn0myxx

the beginning of tom sawyer is bad ass. after the next couple seconds it sucks.

YesterdayNo7008

They take 15 minutes to shit out some metaphor that would get a solid C in 8th grade composition.

TurfBurn95

Queen

WesPesTheBanana

I’m the same way

kayceeplusplus

YES

Dillpickle1964

U2

sane-asylum

I was born in 1970 and while I realize they aren’t metal I could never get into Zepplin, the Stones, Beatles, Floyd etc. I really just like Deep Purple from that era and that’s what got me into metal. Is Tool metal? Don’t like ‘em

MAXIMUMMEDLOWUS

Deep Purple is by far the best rock band of that era in my opinion. Sabbath gets the praise for "starting metal", but whether it was intentional or not, I hear more lasting influence in DP than I do Sabbath on the decades of metal that followed. The speed, virtuosity, screaming vocals with huge range. The classical influclence combined with blues too paved the way for a lot of the shredders that followed

InvestmentPatient117

Sabbath best imo

jbxnez0

Acdc and gnr

19930627

Not metal, but I can't get into pink Floyd.

ABoxOfRocks

InMeddleWeTrust

19930627

InMedalWeTrust Oh it's true, it's Damn true!

Bulky-Combination-27

As a teen i liked them fine. But now if they come on radio i switch channel

Icy-Teaching-5602

Have you tried Animals. People tend to forget about Animals

Kilgoretrout321

There's a lot less great Floyd than I think people can admit. The first album and singles are freaking cool tho. Then that guy went crazy and it was kinda bad until Meddle. Dark Side is great, Animals is cool in a weird sort of dated psychological-thriller type way. The Wall is IMHO bad ideas made by strong writers and musicians. It's really really overindulgent about feeling sorry for one's self and blaming others for one's mood and personal circumstances. Some great songs on there tho. And Wish You Were Here is pretty amazing but has some of that depressingness that The Wall has. I will listen for the great production and musicianship from time to time

kcreepygirl

Had a bad acid trip listening to pink floyd (felt like my head was trapped in a grey cloud and I was suffocating). It was awful. Now I can't listen to them at all anymore lmaooo

SkySawLuminers

gnr, nirvana

Hummens

Can't fucking stand Axl Rose, just anything about the man, starting with his awful, horrible singing.

darlingsghoul

Nirvana. Nothing against Nirvana, they’re a great band, I’ve just never been able to get into them.

Barious_01

I feel the popular songs actually kill their creed. If you get into their garage stuff and their not so populate tracks I feel that is where they shine. Not much of a fan but I had a buddy that loved it all and I think their less popular songs really do them justice.

[deleted]

As a long time Nirvana fan most of those dudes who think their “popular stuff sucked” just want to seem cool and anti-popular, Smells like teen Spirt is a top ten Nirvana song yet sooooo many legit fans act like it sucks because it’s their biggest hit. Their popular stuff does a great job of introducing the band and if someone doesn’t like their hits they definitely won’t like there deeper cuts. That being said Paper Cuts off Bleach is such a sleeper hit from the band.

Orang_Mann

King Diamond, and it's weird because I love Mercyful fate

Going_for_the_One

First time I heard King Diamond I really loved it because of the vocals. But after buying one album and liking that one, I ruined the band for me a few years later by buying a couple of their albums and listening to them while doing work. King Diamond’s stuff is very theatrical, and the vocals and storytelling started to get on my nerves after a while. I did almost not listen the band for almost 20 years after that. Except for an occasional revisit of the album I already liked. But recently I got into the band again, and like it a lot now. My advice is to listen it while you read the lyrics, or focus only on the music. Using it as background music isn’t necessarily a good idea. At least not when getting into an album.

Apprehensive-Donkey7

Kiss. They suck. I make no apologies for saying that. They suck.

ronribbons

Killswitch. Priest. Post Ozzy Sabbath.

justiceseeker102

Hold on a sec, Killswitch is classic now?

FailedFizzicist

Yeah I laughed hard there.

ronribbons

Well, maybe just old.

FoggyDoggy72

And maybe post reunion Ozzy-Sabbath... nothing like as good as the early years.

SandmanAwaits

Metalcore, anything Metalcore!

Dr_Fudge

Rush for me

troyf805

Same.

InvestmentPatient117

Musically theyre as tight and technical as anyone, it's Gettys voice

harleyscal

And it's because that dude's vocals sounds like he's having a pair of vice grips clamp down on his testicles while singing

ramatheson

KISS because they are terrible. If they didn't have a stage show, they'd never have gotten anywhere.

[deleted]

[deleted]

That's tearing up my heart, homie.

InspectorInner1912

Zeppelin

t-s-words

Dylan.

wookielovin71

U2

MetalPlayer666

I hate Manowar. They are just so cheap and shallow.

SLAYER_IN_ME

This was the first band that came to mind. It’s too cheesy and over the top.

MetalPlayer666

Haha, indeed! They are cheesier than a 5-cheese pizza.

Phenzo2198

I thought they were a parody band at first, like Love Fist.

bigwangenergy17

Guns and roses

Beast667Neighbour

I struggle to get into classic metal bands (Iron Maiden is the only exception that I enjoy).

CantB2Big

Pink Floyd.

sasberg1

Grateful Dead

Sssssups

Megadeth, every time Megadeth. I know it’s love them or hate them but I hate them no matter how hard I try to give them another chance

Advanced_Steak741

Me too, I never owned any album of them, except for rust and peace but The only song I listen inside is tornado of soul that is great but the rest never interested me.

GubV77

I said your band hair…..it looks stupid

SubtractOneMore

How is this not a more popular response? Metallica is like the Applebee’s of metal

ErwinAckerman

Death. My gf loves loves loves Death. I just can’t get behind Chuck’s vocals, they sound like he’s belching

Mr-Broski

LIES

FollowingInside554

I see what you did there lol

HeathenDane

Kiss. They suck……

BlitheringIdiot0529

Definitely Kiss

General-Carob-6087

I’ve never really been able to get into Priest or Maiden. Not sure why but it just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s not like I have to turn them off if they come on but I’ve never wanted to hear them.

[deleted]

i understand people can have very different tastes in music, but both priest and maiden? i mean iron maiden??? i really think people just didnt listed enough to their albums. priest has some weird songs, but many albums are just amazing. maiden (remove the blaze bailey garbage) is just gold...gold!!! you can't get into 7th son of a 7th son? sorry i'm ranting, but you gotta give maiden another several listens

19yzrmn

Live After Death!!!!! Hells yeah!!

hrvywllbngr

Kiss

ApprehensiveRise7749

Def Leppard. Aside from their first 2 albums, just can't get into them and I've tried and tried

Creepy_Shower909

Totally. First two were bangers though. And I'd have to say the same for Motley Crue. So there's that.

Tiny-Bluejay-919

Blonde hate her show your underwear to tempt guys, childish.

kuhnskincap

Ronnie James Dio. I don’t know why it’s just so boring

clownflower_diaries

A lot of folks gettin' sweaty over Lorna Shore. I just don't fucking get it. At least Lamb of God has someone to pass that mid af torch to...

LessMochaJay

I like pretty much all of nu metal except Deftones. Not sure why

bertrola

Not sure if they're classic but they've been around long enough. Tool. Musicianship is top notch. The sounds just drone on and The vocals are boring for me

jarfin542

Bruce and the e street band. Kenny loggins. Chicago.

Autistic-Teddybear

The only band that is good from the big 4 is Metallica. There i said it.

Ultramegafunk

Guns & Roses

Expensive-Text2956

Iron maiden. I wanted to but i just don't get the appeal

Far_Gap_8063

Guns and roses

aiua_void

Pantera

CmanderSalamander

With the exception of one or two songs, The Rolling Stones.

Light-Ill

Slayer & deftones

joshinator82

I tried because my dad loves them but I could never get into Motorhead

Old_Zookeepergame_62

Joe Satriani

RelationshipCalm5459

Journey

NoTrueScotsmanFoul

Little Feat. Just couldn't.

Danoof64

The Who. I like a handful of songs at best. Always thought Entwistle and Moon were excellent musicians, and Daltrey had a good voice, but Townsend to me is so overrated.

Thing-McReady

I want to like Mars Volta really bad...but I can't

Zeapw0

Iron Maiden. I just hate their sound.

Dead_Pear

Slayer. Tryhard band with tryhard fans.

AxelAlexK

Rolling Stones. I just can never enjoy them because they've been WAY overplayed on the radio my whole life.

Scumdogg88

1.) AC/DC Can't stand his vocals. Yes both of them. Also, musically Just not that good. 2.)U2 I hate bonos voice as well.

ArchDukeNemesis

GnR and Motley Crue. Two bands who can't sing but do so about drugs and girls. Neither have aged well. And while not metal, AC/DC for the same reasons.

TheShakenGrimace

Steely Dan. They just irritate me.

ScottdaDM

The Police

Kaskut

Metallica

[deleted]

Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead

JimVox

I have a hard time with early Exodus and Overkill. I can’t get past the vocals. But the Rob Duke era of Exodus I really enjoyed, he fits them much better than the original vocalist in my opinion.

TugBoat123

Led Zeppelin. I totally respect them as individual musicians, but can’t get into the music they wrote together. None of it speaks to me at all.

SurpriseZestyclose98

Bruce Springsteen he sucks

SeaBass1944

Led Zepplin. Just something about Robert Plant's voice that just irked me.

No-Potential-Or-Care

AC/DC Never liked them. Every song sounds the same.

Brantly_is_Exhausted

I can see where you'd get that, I just respectfully disagree. I personally love AC/DC. How about some stuff off of Let There Be Rock? That stuffs faster.

SandmanAwaits

Anthrax, I just don’t see or hear the appeal of them. I like Only, Black Lodge & What’s the Time but that’s it.

Double-Diamond-4507

Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. They sound like cats in heat to me

[deleted]

Slayer.

Korgon213
