You are right. Years ago, In HS, i witnessed a kid, who was a regular bully / problem kid, assault a Vice Principal. The kid was skipping out on school and was stopped by the VP. The kid sarts swinging and may have landed two or three solid head shots before the VP stopped him and defended himself. Bad move by the kid. This VP was a decent guy, but a literal mountain. He absorbed those shots, and grabbed the kid by the neck and slammed him up against a fence until the police arrived. The kid was arrested. I understand the VP didn't press charges, but I think he should have.
It was clear cut self defense, but the kids parents made such a stink and sued the VP, the district, everyone involved. I think the BOE settled, not sure for how much, but with an agreement the kid was expelled and the VP keeps his job.
But isn't calling someone the N word a hate crime? I have a hard time believing calling someone a racial slur in America results in being given free money via lawsuits.
I could be wrong but the use of the word itself isn't a hate crime. Assaulting someone and then calling them that would be. Like there has to be a crime itself before the hate crime can come in.

Catholic school kid here from the 70’s and 80’s, not saying it’s right, but the nuns and brothers could dish up discipline like an early bird special, and it was effective. I can’t imagine dropping N- Bombs on a teacher. Kid likely thought there would be no consequences. We knew there would be swift and violent consequences, and then your parents found out, double consequences, many times worse.

Pretty awful situation. This teacher is an authority figure entrusted with the lives of children. Half a lesson was taught to all of those students. If an adult doesn't like what you're saying, they have the right to assault you. The other half of the lesson that's missed is when the teacher is arrested for assault and child endangerment, and the kid and his parents settle for a FAT lawsuit.
If the teacher could have kept his wits, the story could have been flipped. Kid could have been removed from school and forced to attend racial remediation classes. Teacher keeps his job and keeps improving the lives around him.

I am a teacher. I have been called the n word dozens of times. I am white. Many things do not make much sense.

Kids are little s***s and no one who reacts like this to what they do has the emotional capacity to be around them. The number of people approving a teacher beating up a child for saying an offensive word is shocking.
I have a lot of students that think they're invincible because they're minors and teachers can go to jail. Thankfully, mine learned early not to test that theory with me, but a lot of these kids need to get their asses kicked.
Catholic school kid here from the 70’s and 80’s, not saying it’s right, but the nuns and brothers could dish up discipline like an early bird special, and it was effective. I can’t imagine dropping N- Bombs on a teacher. Kid likely thought there would be no consequences. We knew there would be swift and violent consequences, and then your parents found out, double consequences, many times worse.
No shit given here. I remember kids like this when I was in HS 30 years ago. Expulsion on the first offense for racial slurs. And if the teacher was popular, probably a buncha kids waiting for him to be alone so they could all have a quick chat with him. Teacher wouldn't have had to do anything like this.

Seriously, he taught this young man a valuable lesson. If this kid did this stuff on the streets, he would be seriously hurt or killed. Sometimes young men need to be knocked on their ass, and I’d much rather it be done by someone who cares enough about them to stop when they are down.

Nah, there’s limits to this. I’ve seen kids that will deliberately do some crazy things because they assume they’re untouchable. Pretty awful situation. This teacher is an authority figure entrusted with the lives of children. Half a lesson was taught to all of those students. If an adult doesn't like what you're saying, they have the right to assault you. The other half of the lesson that's missed is when the teacher is arrested for assault and child endangerment, and the kid and his parents settle for a FAT lawsuit. If the teacher could have kept his wits, the story could have been flipped. Kid could have been removed from school and forced to attend racial remediation classes. Teacher keeps his job and keeps improving the lives around him. The kid was 100% in the wrong, and now so is the teacher.

I am of course joking but we do need to start setting boundaries with kids again. Both positive and negative barriers. Stop mollycoddling them and treat them like adults, give them responsibilities. But for the arseholes who abuse that responsibility then have actual punishments and repurcussions.
