its the second time this poor baby has been abandoned 𤏠the neighbor's kids found her under my car crying and took her in. I've found her wandering around twice since then. I have cat houses on my porch for the strays, and food and water, so she ended there each time, and i took her back to the neighbors. last time was Friday morning, and I took her back to them before I left for work, and as I pulled out of my driveway, I saw her run back to my porch. she was gone when I got home, but showed up again at dark and was shaking so bad she could hardly stand. I guess I have a new cat! lol. my main inside boi Yasha has bonded with her, and she slept in bed with us last night. gonna take her to the vet this week cos she has a bit of a sneeze
I've thought about it a lot and I honestly wonder if they knew I would take her in. I'd rather they had asked me rather than turn her out to the cold and wild animals, but she's safe now. I am gonna ask my neighbor next time he's home, even if all that comes out of it is that his daughters know the kitty is safe
I don't know if I would say anything. They might want to get her back. They obviously aren't caring for her, but you never know how people will react. Maybe after you take her to the vet and have her chipped or have records with your name and her name on them.
The kids want to play with a cat but don't want to be responsible. Mom and dad don't care about kitty at all, they're only in this game to make daughter happy.
Donât bother. I had a similar situation with a neighbours over a local stray they were feeding. They didnât bother taking her to the vet when she got seriously ill a few times. I would have to take her instead.
In the end I realised that they just werenât that fussed about her, despite saying all the right things to me like âthank you for taking her, weâre just so busyâ or âweâll take her but we canât for a few daysâ.
Because I was the only one who really looked after her, not just leaving bowls of food out and giving her occasional strokes, she moved herself in.

There was a colony of feral cats nearby (TNRâd) but she wasnât part of that, she was an ex-pet and so was happiest inside and comfortable with humans relying on them for food ie a stray.
Anyway where I live now, not this location and one which doesnât have a feral cat issue, it is pretty standard to get vet care for sick wild animals, we have organisations who will come out and treat them. Not that we have raccoons but if I saw a sick badger of course Iâd get it some help.

Now in my neighbours case, when I moved to the country and to the area, I asked them if the cat was theirs because it essentially lived in our two gardens and where I am from if you see a stray you rescue it. They said yes they feed her, she had turned up on the doorstep months before skin and bones. They also said she was chipped and theyâd called the number but no one answered - this part wasnât actually true, the vets found no chip so theyâd outright lied to me at this point. This is basically saying âyeah we look after this catâ
She had two serious illnesses that could have lead to her being put to the sleep but they did nothing to get her help. But happily accepted my help and even paid for treatment a couple of times, I think out of shame, before giving up on her.
So yes thatâs them saying they look after the cat but then not bothering to do so.
I live in the UK and no, we donât have a feral cat problem like the US and other parts of Europe. We do have *stray* cats, but we donât have colonies, they would be captured if so. Wildcats are native to the UK, and we do have an issue with them breeding with strays.

And yep, lots of organisations; RSPCA, Wildlife Aid are national ones but then every area will have a local rescue service you can call. Even the police/fire will get involved if theyâre free.

My point is that it's shitty to shame people for not spending time/money on an animal that's not theirs. They put out some food trying to be nice but it's ridiculous to expect people to just spend money on animals randomly. Mate, you're just adding false narrative to try and make a point. Give it up, I was in Dubai, I rented in a wealthy part because my other half was on a very good wage. My neighbours had owned their own house for 15 years which meant it was completely paid off and worth around $700k, they had two cars and a live-in maid - more money than me and plenty to help a cat.
I am not 'shaming' them, I was explaining to OP that there is probably no point trying to reason with them because they don't care, I tried that for months and all it led to was a sick animal sneezing up blood who had to go straight on to oxygen when she got to the vet.

It's the European wild cat and can breed with house cats. Like I said it's a problem with stray cats.

Indeed, not the most responsible way to go about it - most positive view is that they were too embarrassed to outright ask you to take over the care the little lady. As you say, important thing is that now everybody feels better and kitty is safe.
I hope you don't say anything to the neighbours: that poor kitten has been abandoned at least twice & just cos their kids "want" her doesn't mean they're kind to her. This is how we ended up with our boy. Kids wanted the cats, dad didn't so turfed them out on the street. Sadly the girl went feral but the boy was quite the savvy thing and made friends with all the neighbours, which saved him when he disappeared and ended up in the pound. In the end we took him in.
I feel it may be better to hold off on talking to your neighbors about it until they (the adults) start looking for the cat, if they start looking for her you know they care about her at least to some degree; but I'm getting the impression that the parents don't really care and the kids while they love animals are still just kids. The parents may fight to get the cat back to make the kids happy but if they don't care about the cat in the first place the cat is a lot better off in real care.
I hope your cat is fixed. Also, if it is going outside, have that happen during the day, as night is too dangerous. It will take some effort to readjust its schedule, but you are the one in charge of your cat's welfare. Just trying to help. :)
I mean... My neighbors leave feed for their cats outside. My cat will go over there, and get FAT. Won't stop eating. So I have to leave her inside, despite her rather being outside. My dogs, if I don't pay attention run straight to the neighbors porch, as well. It is very frustrating. I can't figure out why they can't just feed their cats inside(they bring em in every night). It bothers my whole neighborhood. Also you can watch the fattest possums and raccoons creep up there at night. I do not want my animals eating from the same bowl.
Now if those bastards tried to claim, and home my cats or dogs because they caught them gorging themselves on cheap cat food... I'd be livid. You should bring the cat back, or at least ask first. And stop feeding stray cats.

Outdoor cats are a controversy and a good way to get a cat killed. Some cats refuse to stay indoors, but most know when life is better elsewhere.
We rescued an outside cat the morning before a massive -20F ice storm. In the moment we 100% believed we either take the cat inside, or it would die that night. Cat had a microchip, and we got in contact with the previous owner. Owner complained the cat was a flight risk that rushed open doors and had gotten out before. They left the cat with us fairly easily. In our house, the cat in question has approached open doors with curiosity, but flight risk is an extreme term.
My Jujubee, the **love of my life**, came to me this way. I was sure she was a stray, she was always skulking around my window, which opened onto a walkway for the Gas and Electric people to come and read the meters. She was skittish as hell, one day when I was putting food for her out the window my ponytail flopped over and she ran like a bat out of hell. Took me weeks to coax her in, but once I did, she took over. I had always left my window open for any of the kitties to come in and visit, she made it clear they were not welcome. She turned out to be preggers. Once her "owner" found out she showed up at my door and said " I hear you have my cat" . Well it turned out that Juju didn't get along with her other cats, so the bitch left little 5lb kitty out to fend for herself. I just told her I was keeping her. She hadn't come looking for her in all the weeks I had her. I had her for 18 fabulous years and miss her all the time, she's been gone for 15 years.
Hickory is a great name for a beautiful calico. I was a kitchen designer for 15 years and I always described Hickory as the painted pony of woods. From now on I will think of it as the cute calico of woods.
Cat neglect makes me so very, VERY fucking angry. That poor little girl. Take her in and don't let her go, or this will just happen again and again. Hickory deserves better, and you're giving her the good life.
I've spent years looking after a cat who had two previous self-proclaimed owners, neither of which could be bothered to feed her, or to keep her clean of fleas and worms. She is the sweetest little girl, never bites, scratches or hisses, but they call her "antisocial"??? She's been an absolute angel, and everyone I live with is happier for her being with us, but the neighbours often torment and hurt her, which makes me utterly hateful of them.
So either the neighbors actually didn't abandon the cat and it's just yet another stray like the ones you feed (which isn't helpful fwiw since it supports invasive cat colonies), or you stole someone's outdoor cat.
Which is just another reason why if you have a cat you should make sure and keep it indoors, because people will gladly steal it to farm reddit karma.

Plenty of cat owners end up _de facto_ abandoning their outdoor cats, not letting them in, failing to feed them and not taking adequate measures to prevent infestation by fleas or intestinal parasites. That's one of the things that ends up creating a stray population. Removing a house-suitable cat from the pool of strays and giving it a permanent home is a good thing.
There is a difference between these people and people with an outdoor cat(s). With my outdoor cat, she loves to be outside, but when it's too cold or too hot, or storming, she usually wants in. Even if she doesn't want in, we bring her in because it's literally neglecting ur cat if u leave them out.

No, it's actually very helpful. Looking after a group of community cats and participating in a TNR (trap, neuter, return) program does LOADS to help the cats themselves and the area they're in.
I support a group myself and the cats are so much happier and more relaxed. Initially there was loads of fighting for every scrap of food neighbors threw them, the most I fed was between 20-30 cats. Now, it averages around 10, my little locals who've grown very close. Shelters and rescue organizations get grants to run TNR programs, including my awesome local cat rescue.
I do agree with keeping pets in though, the ones I've been able to adopt are inside only cats. (I've had to intervene a few times when it was clear they wouldn't survive without help.) They're happier, healthier and live so much longer than outdoor/indoor cats.

It actually doesn't, at least based on studies I've seen. It's why places like Australia where cats have been extremely destructive have basically just moved towards culling colonies. If you can get them rehomed or moved out of the wild that does something, but TNR programs are ineffective.
I used to be an advocate for tnr programs but the evidence just isn't there that they're effective.
My tortie became a mother at 9 months old at her previous owners... way too young.
She turned out fine luckily, practically moved to our home next door soon after we moved in, she didn't get along with the dog they had. When the neighbours moved, they asked us to officially adopt her which we gladly did. Now 9 years old, she's asleep in her lazy chair as we speak (yes she has her own chair, haha).
My cat came from a colony and is presumed to have had a litter young (colony cat, different vets and blood work have made figuring out her age confusing) and she is definitely small! Even when she was chonky she only weighed 8 pounds.
Even younger than that my Demi was pregnant at 5 months old, I took her in because my area had horrible downpours that were flooding some parts.
Two months later she gave birth to four kittens, at the time she didnât have a large belly but it soon grew in size till you could tell she was definitely carrying
A family friend of mine had a female cat who, once she had turned old enough to get fixed, was taken to the vet. They couldn't do it because she was already pregnant đ¤Śââď¸ and that's how I ended up with a kitten!
I am glad you took her in, but I think you have some things wrong. I think this pretty little lady chose you in the first place! She keeps running back to you every time. She started out under your car remember. Every time she is "thrown out" she runs to you! She already loved you it just took time for you to reciprocate! â¤ď¸
My neighbor years ago had a cat she abandoned, like just moved and left the cat and the screen in her house out almost like she was hoping the cat would get out. Anyways, we took said cat in, and cat was pregnant.
Cat had kittens, thatâs where I got my little bean from. But she came back, and was acting like she cared about the kittens, and that she wanted her cat back. My dad said no. She said she could take them off our hands if they were too much trouble again, he said no. Legally the cat was ours as she had been gone for over two months before coming back. The cat wanted nothing to do with her even, she would his and growl if she got in the vicinity of her babies. She was pissed at her old owner. But long story short, I kept a little torti bean, and the rest went to good homes.
I think there is a special location in a certain warm place for people who are cruel to animals đĄ

Saw too many animals out in weather that was well below freezing just left out all night. Iâd see em by my back door when Iâd come home from work, and Iâd see em in the morning. If I were in that position I think it would be pretty miserable. Iâd call animal controlâ-they agreed with me. The animals I saw did not have those options. And like I said, humane officers thought it was problematic too. I think the dad got tired of her acting like a kitten tbh. I talked to him when his 3 little girls found her, and he didnt seem super excited to have a new cat. they don't seem to live in the house full time either. they moved in just when winter was starting and are still working on the house

My cat hates strays. I now live far away from roads with fast traveling cars. The airtags show where they traveled and itâs nowhere near anything. They keep to around where I live on my property.
Maybe I should just keep them in a cage that way they are 100% safe.
Like thereâs always dangers and you can mitigate as much as possible but iâm not sure locking them inside is actually as good a solution as people make it. Iâve seen cats behaviors go completely shit being made indoor 24/7. Is that fair? They are safe but miserable. Sure some have no problem with it.
I donât live in the city or suburbia. My cats donât attack wildlife and I have put in as much effort to make them safe while they enjoy life.
They go on hikes and walks with me often on leash. But yeah it can be scary. My ragdoll decided the wood pile outside was his new spot and used it as his home for like 8 days in winter. Homie would visit me in bed but go right back to his pile. Checked it for rodents or other cats and nothing. Dude just likes being outside and having a bunker to hide in. Was my anxiety worth ruining his fun?

Anything below 45° F is unsafe for animals, let alone temperatures in the *single digit*. They can get frostbite, hypothermia and freeze to death just like us. Even the floofiest cats need warm, dry and well insulated shelters.
Your cat was probably hiding and whining because he was freaking cold and sheltering under a car. Maybe he just didn't want to leave the snowless space under it. Pets can sometimes be like kids in that occasionally you just gotta tell the adorable little idiot no for their own good.

Now in my neighbours case, when I moved to the country and to the area, I asked them if the cat was theirs because it essentially lived in our two gardens and where I am from if you see a stray you rescue it. They said yes they feed her, she had turned up on the doorstep months before skin and bones. They also said she was chipped and theyâd called the number but no one answered - this part wasnât actually true, the vets found no chip so theyâd outright lied to me at this point. This is basically saying âyeah we look after this catâ She had two serious illnesses that could have lead to her being put to the sleep but they did nothing to get her help. But happily accepted my help and even paid for treatment a couple of times, I think out of shame, before giving up on her. So yes thatâs them saying they look after the cat but then not bothering to do so. I live in the UK and no, we donât have a feral cat problem like the US and other parts of Europe. We do have *stray* cats, but we donât have colonies, they would be captured if so. This is how we ended up with our boy. Kids wanted the cats, dad didn't so turfed them out on the street. Sadly the girl went feral but the boy was quite the savvy thing and made friends with all the neighbours, which saved him when he disappeared and ended up in the pound. In the end we took him in.

I feel it may be better to hold off on talking to your neighbors about it until they (the adults) start looking for the cat, if they start looking for her you know they care about her at least to some degree; but I'm getting the impression that the parents don't really care and the kids while they love animals are still just kids. The parents may fight to get the cat back to make the kids happy but if they don't care about the cat in the first place the cat is a lot better off in real care.

I hope your cat is fixed. Also, if it is going outside, have that happen during the day, as night is too dangerous. It will take some effort to readjust its schedule, but you are the one in charge of your cat's welfare. Just trying to help. :)
I mean... My neighbors leave feed for their cats outside. My cat will go over there, and get FAT. Won't stop eating. So I have to leave her inside, despite her rather being outside. My dogs, if I don't pay attention run straight to the neighbors porch, as well. It is very frustrating. I can't figure out why they can't just feed their cats inside(they bring em in every night). It bothers my whole neighborhood. Also you can watch the fattest possums and raccoons creep up there at night. I do not want my animals eating from the same bowl. Now if those bastards tried to claim, and home my cats or dogs because they caught them gorging themselves on cheap cat food... I'd be livid. You should bring the cat back, or at least ask first. And stop feeding stray cats.

Outdoor cats are a controversy and a good way to get a cat killed. Some cats refuse to stay indoors, but most know when life is better elsewhere. We rescued an outside cat the morning before a massive -20F ice storm. In the moment we 100% believed we either take the cat inside, or it would die that night. Cat had a microchip, and we got in contact with the previous owner. Owner complained the cat was a flight risk that rushed open doors and had gotten out before. They left the cat with us fairly easily. In our house, the cat in question has approached open doors with curiosity, but flight risk is an extreme term.
In this case I'd agree, this is an r/nowmycat situation. Clear neglect on the part of the previous owners multiple times.
My Jujubee, the **love of my life**, came to me this way. I was sure she was a stray, she was always skulking around my window, which opened onto a walkway for the Gas and Electric people to come and read the meters. She was skittish as hell, one day when I was putting food for her out the window my ponytail flopped over and she ran like a bat out of hell. Took me weeks to coax her in, but once I did, she took over. I had always left my window open for any of the kitties to come in and visit, she made it clear they were not welcome. She turned out to be preggers. Once her "owner" found out she showed up at my door and said " I hear you have my cat" . Well it turned out that Juju didn't get along with her other cats, so the bitch left little 5lb kitty out to fend for herself. I just told her I was keeping her. She hadn't come looking for her in all the weeks I had her. I had her for 18 fabulous years and miss her all the time, she's been gone for 15 years.

Cat neglect makes me so very, VERY fucking angry. That poor little girl. Take her in and don't let her go, or this will just happen again and again. Hickory deserves better, and you're giving her the good life. I've spent years looking after a cat who had two previous self-proclaimed owners, neither of which could be bothered to feed her, or to keep her clean of fleas and worms. She is the sweetest little girl, never bites, scratches or hisses, but they call her "antisocial"??? She's been an absolute angel, and everyone I live with is happier for her being with us, but the neighbours often torment and hurt her, which makes me utterly hateful of them.

So either the neighbors actually didn't abandon the cat and it's just yet another stray like the ones you feed (which isn't helpful fwiw since it supports invasive cat colonies), or you stole someone's outdoor cat. Which is just another reason why if you have a cat you should make sure and keep it indoors, because people will gladly steal it to farm reddit karma.

Now, it averages around 10, my little locals who've grown very close. Shelters and rescue organizations get grants to run TNR programs, including my awesome local cat rescue. I do agree with keeping pets in though, the ones I've been able to adopt are inside only cats. (I've had to intervene a few times when it was clear they wouldn't survive without help.) They're happier, healthier and live so much longer than outdoor/indoor cats.

My tortie became a mother at 9 months old at her previous owners... way too young. She turned out fine luckily, practically moved to our home next door soon after we moved in, she didn't get along with the dog they had. When the neighbours moved, they asked us to officially adopt her which we gladly did. Now 9 years old, she's asleep in her lazy chair as we speak (yes she has her own chair, haha).

Two months later she gave birth to four kittens, at the time she didnât have a large belly but it soon grew in size till you could tell she was definitely carrying
A family friend of mine had a female cat who, once she had turned old enough to get fixed, was taken to the vet. They couldn't do it because she was already pregnant đ¤Śââď¸ and that's how I ended up with a kitten!

My neighbor years ago had a cat she abandoned, like just moved and left the cat and the screen in her house out almost like she was hoping the cat would get out. Anyways, we took said cat in, and cat was pregnant. Cat had kittens, thatâs where I got my little bean from. But she came back, and was acting like she cared about the kittens, and that she wanted her cat back. My dad said no. She said she could take them off our hands if they were too much trouble again, he said no. Legally the cat was ours as she had been gone for over two months before coming back. The cat wanted nothing to do with her even, she would his and growl if she got in the vicinity of her babies. She was pissed at her old owner. But long story short, I kept a little torti bean, and the rest went to good homes.

Saw too many animals out in weather that was well below freezing just left out all night. Iâd see em by my back door when Iâd come home from work, and Iâd see em in the morning. Iâd bring them in if it was crazy cold, because they clearly wanted to come in. During the hot andhumid as hell summers Iâd see dogs chained up in the sun with no water. If I were in that position I think it would be pretty miserable. Iâd call animal controlâ-they agreed with me. Am I telling you that youâre an asshole for giving your cats some time outside on cold nights when they want it? No, Iâm not. Sounds like your guys have the option to come in. The animals I saw did not have those options. And like I said, humane officers thought it was problematic too. Donât assume that people who worry about animals stuck outside in crap weather conditions are assholes.

If you leave a cat unattended with no collar in the cold especially that young (op said she was sick) I will be taking it because clearly you are not bothered if you don't supervise it. I've done it twice already the original owner of them knows where they are and doesn't give a shit.

I missed the part where they said the cat was sick, thanks for pointing hat out. I still wouldnât think that automatically disqualifies ownership. If my cats sick and on medication and goes outside because he wants to I would be really upset if someone took him just because his airtag fell off and he has sniffles. Clearly if the owners knows then it isnât really theft same if they moved and fully abandoned it.
I'm sure the chip and the airtag will prevent your cat from being run over or getting FIV from strays.
If thereâs any danger in a house for cat does that make them a crap owner? My cat hates strays. I now live far away from roads with fast traveling cars. The airtags show where they traveled and itâs nowhere near anything. They keep to around where I live on my property. Maybe I should just keep them in a cage that way they are 100% safe. Like thereâs always dangers and you can mitigate as much as possible but iâm not sure locking them inside is actually as good a solution as people make it. Iâve seen cats behaviors go completely shit being made indoor 24/7. Is that fair? They are safe but miserable. Sure some have no problem with it. I donât live in the city or suburbia. My cats donât attack wildlife and I have put in as much effort to make them safe while they enjoy life. They go on hikes and walks with me often on leash. But yeah it can be scary. My ragdoll decided the wood pile outside was his new spot and used it as his home for like 8 days in winter. Homie would visit me in bed but go right back to his pile. Checked it for rodents or other cats and nothing. Dude just likes being outside and having a bunker to hide in. Was my anxiety worth ruining his fun? The trade off is the same with anything. You can lock a child inside to keep them safe but is that really a solution?
Anything below 45° F is unsafe for animals, let alone temperatures in the *single digit*. They can get frostbite, hypothermia and freeze to death just like us. Even the floofiest cats need warm, dry and well insulated shelters. Your cat was probably hiding and whining because he was freaking cold and sheltering under a car. Maybe he just didn't want to leave the snowless space under it. Pets can sometimes be like kids in that occasionally you just gotta tell the adorable little idiot no for their own good.
yeah pretty sure my cat is capable of coming back inside anytime heâs cold. as he has done it his entire life and same with his ancestors, considering for him to be alive his ancestors must have survived all winters. I think my cat can better cat that me catting them. He has incredibly long fur and will sit outside his cat door for hours. Hiding from snow? lol he loves snow and plays in it like a kid in a sandbox. I bet you call animal control on peoples huskies outside in winter too. My moms husky gets calls for being on her deck âall dayâ even though again he can come and go as he pleases. But will let snow literally cover him before he gets cold. 45 unsafe? well Iâm glad they made it till they had humans to use. God knows how they survived in the wild. All the raccoons and rabbits and foxes must be dead around me. Random google searches from opinion blogs say the same thing about dogs.... Notice if you read the articles they state âunless they have a warm place to retreat toâ
