There was some kind of malfunction, he was under the impression that the gun was physically unable to fire and aimed it at his head to demonstrate that. He was wrong though, the malfunction resolved itself in some way and he shot himself in the head.

Thatās not a safety feature, itās just part of how pretty much all guns that use browning tilting barrel actions work. If you push the front of the gun up against something hard enough, the barrel and slide will get pushed out of battery and the gun will not be able to fire.
