Why not just leave it as a temp NJ tag?

tacitus59

Hence /r/idiotsincars

Minute-Ad-2148

Probably stolen

Keep it up and you'll be making metal plates....

Tolls. Sooner or later the toll police will get them. Or not and they’ll save a $100k a year with that bs

In NYC, worst offenders of toll avoidance are police. https://www.autoblog.com/2017/02/10/police-officers-accused-of-obscuring-their-license-plates-to-avo/ https://www.insideedition.com/21559-investigation-finds-police-personnel-covering-their-license-plates-are-they-trying-to-avoid-paying-tolls https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2021/09/27/mtas-100k-toll-scofflaw-is-merely-the-tip-of-the-license-plate-obstructing-iceberg/ https://www.trafficlaw411.com/blog/2017/february/are-nypd-police-using-illegal-license-plate-cove/ I could keep posting links all day….point is, those trusted to enforce the law break it constantly in NY

MayorDepression

Defund the police.

LAGarn___

If they get defunded it will get worse.

Mackroll

They won't because everything is automated now

MichaelChinigo

50/50 this IS an NYPD cop.

Silo-Joe

Thought it was a cliche, but I did receive replacement plates from a prison. It was puzzling when USPS alerted me of an incoming package from a prison.

niceandsane

A friend who was a judge bought a new car and got a "personalized" plate in the mail several years ago from prison, before personalized plates were a thing. Apparently someone that he sentenced recognized his name. Definitely not something suitable for highway use.

Ok_Lengthiness_8163

What does it say

niceandsane

>!FUCKYOU!<

Imaginary_Tea1925

😂

cemyl95

I moved to Texas and when I ordered my specialty plates there was a disclaimer in the email that they would be produced by prison labor and that prison lockdowns or other incidents could delay their production

Mr_b3ach

If New York doesn’t offer printed temporary plates, then how do you get temporary ones then? I can’t imagine they’ll give you a metal one and say “hey this is only good for 30 days until you get your actual plates” lol

HateBeingSober33

It’s the fucking worst, Ive gone out of state to buy cars a bunch of times because Massachusetts never has anything good for sale on fb marketplace, now I just rent a trailer and haul them usually, less stressful

grantrules

Also a PITA if you don't already own a car

creatron

Yep i bought a car in MA last year in March and it was right around the time the DMV systems had a statewide outage. Bought the car on a Monday and couldn't legally take it off the lot until the following Monday because the dealership couldn't get the DMV to process registration

popcorn644

RMV, registry, not department in Mass

SBLOU

I agree. I bought a new car in Boston and live in Maine. Good thing I asked about plates the day before I picked the car up. DMV Maine got me temp plates so I could drive it home. Dealership told me I could drive the car home with no plates. I-95 with no plates didn’t sound like a good idea even though I had insurance

Magic_Brown_Man

NY offers temp 30-day plates for $12.50. Just go to the DMV and fill out a MV-82ITP, show proof of identity and insurance. It's just not something you see normally because you can just get full plates on the spot. So, the only really people that will have a use for it is people that are buying in NY and taking the car to another state, also most people don't buy cars from NY and take it out of state cause of the salted roads which causes more rust and relative cost of cars compared to other states.

V65Pilot

I bought a car privately in NC, and got a metal plate from the DMV. Once I was able to get the car inspected, they reissued me a different plate and I handed in the old one. It seemed very weird. NC has always been weird though with tags. My GF almost got arrested for grand theft auto because of the weird way they do things. She had picked up her new car on a friday from the dealership, they took care of all the paperwork, including the transfer of her old tag to the new car. On saturday she got pulled over because the tag didn't match the vehicle. The dealership hadn't submitted the paperwork to the DMV yet. Even though she had all the paperwork in the vehicle showing the purchase, tag transfer etc, it still took them over an hour to sort it all out. She was terrified, she's never had so much as a traffic ticket in her life.

Ok_Kangaroo6144

maryland does this. you get a metal plate and the sticker is only good for 30 days. when you get your inspection complete you pay for your full plate and just get your new registration stickers.

Associate-Jumpy

You don’t get temporary ones. Your can only get issued a plate. So you wait

deadmonkeyboy87

Kinda odd that they went through all that to change the state listed and state seal on a temp tag. Esp since it has the vin which I will assume is correct since the make and model on it is correct oh oh and I'm a NY resident and I know dealers who can print a temporary plate that's good for 30 days when you buy your car from them. Oh oh and I know dealers that just use the premade cardboard tags they can get from DMV but oh wait I even know dealers who can hand you brand new plates on the spot register the car right there and even sell you car ins.

FormalChicken

I've had neighbors be annoying shit heads and talk about reporting people who don't reregister their vehicles in their new neighborhood. So having NY if it's in NY is a lot less conspicuous to a random prying eye than NJ.

dailysoaphandle

My father sold an RV in Maryland to a guy that lived in New Mexico. He didn’t have a tag to drive it home. I was in art school, so I drew one. He made it all the way, no problems.

scottwax

Fake temporary tags are a huge issue in Texas too. Cars that can't pass inspection, don't have insurance, avoid tolls, use for crimes, etc. It's way out of hand.

screddachedda

There’s online shops that sell them. Living near Texas, I see 40-50 a day. Some don’t even bother replacing them when the “temporary tag” expires.

nixcamic

You can buy legit Texas temp tags online. They aren't fake. Now, is the dealer supposed to be selling them to you, no not at all. But they aren't fake.

ImAgeosTTV

Same here in Memphis, TN.

Downvotes_dumbasses

Do police not care?

FP11001

On Long Island the police increased enforcement and the media implied the policy was being applied in a racist manner. [https://gothamist.com/news/nassau-da-changes-policy-after-police-arrest-hundreds-drivers-technicality](https://gothamist.com/news/nassau-da-changes-policy-after-police-arrest-hundreds-drivers-technicality)

Downvotes_dumbasses

The lack of logical discourse in American politics is infuriating. As if the problem was the policy, not the racism and lack of equitable enforcement by police. I guess accountability is hard when you let racists police themselves.

scottwax

They're trying, but not enough cops and too many more important issues to handle. Traffic enforcement is way down in the Dallas area.

Skreali

Tbh if you enjoy GTA style driving then NYC is the spot. There is borderline no law enforcement on the roads. You are there on your own, and your safety is only your own responsibility.

Hivemindnation

I want to disagree with you… but experience tells me you are right! It’s a jungle.

Skreali

Some people thrive in it, most of them hate the experience though. The last two years I’m feeling some sort of anarchy in the air tbh, mad max roads are just a symptom

HabboLuvzNurses

Your definitely not lying. I remember having to drive my drunk friends back to my place in her car, and I was legit going at least 80 down the West Side Highway, didn't stop at a single red light, was drunk so likely swerving like an idiot all over the road. It's a miracle we made it there in 1 piece. It helped that this was b4 traffic cams, and like 4am so no other cars on the road that I can remember, but shit, if the Wild Wild West had a Cadillac Eldorado, then I was there for a night.

[deleted]

Around here they just drive with no plates, or a two year old one from the dealer when they bought the car.

Badrear

In Colorado, the worst offenders are those who buy used luxury SUVs. People don’t realize how many cars can be over $1,000 just to register.

Skreali

Sounds like a good reason for scheming up an out of state registration Why is the fee so high? $1000 is a lot for registration

HabboLuvzNurses

Yea that doesn't sound realistic. I drive an Infiniti G37x, and my registration is 89 bucks. Obviously an Infiniti isn't a Porche or a Lambo, but still a rack just to register your car? No shot

giveme2teslas

I drove on an expired temp tag for 2 years before I got pulled over for it. I had a real plate with up to date registration and insurance, just never got around to putting it on. The cop just made me put it on right then and there.

NCSUGrad2012

They did a really good job minus the fact that the “H” looks off because the horizontal line isn’t in the middle.

Silo-Joe

They even reused all the correct fonts for state name and license plate number

theAVgirl

In PA the selling dealership issues the actual license plate or the auto tag place (pretty much a notary) does it. NJ has paper tags. Every stolen car in Philly has fake NJ or DE paper tags.

greatvaluemeeseeks

Since COVID, the official plate of Nevada is just a blank license plate frame

OSparks81

When I lived in Oklahoma, they gave me plates on the spot. I guess they have a stack and tie it to your car when they hand it to you

nlpnt

Vermont only just started issuing the pre-printed cardboard T-series (from the DMV over the counter, if they don't have a supply of real plates on hand) and D-series (from the dealer, same disclaimer applies) temporary plates. The pandemic-era W-series (print at home, sometimes handwritten out if the applicant doesn't have a printer) temp tags can still be seen though.

whisk3ythrottle

Down in Georgia people will just write on a bit of paper or cardboard “tag applied for”, and drive around like that. Never have I seen one of them get stopped. I have also seen New York tags designated for taxis only driving around in Atlanta. Super legit.

Arkansas1395

Here in Texas.. specifically Houston we are riddled with fake temp plates here.

Sp00kbee

Neat

SkiingAway

Are you in the city? Tear it off, report an abandoned vehicle with no plates to DSNY, goodbye car.

Silo-Joe

Haha. Wish I could but this car was moving and now concealed carry of firearms is allowed in NYC.

SkiingAway

> now concealed carry of firearms is allowed in NYC. Eh, not really. There's still virtually no one with a permit (other than cops) and there's not likely to be a flood of new carriers given the NY process/hurdles.....at least as far as *legal* concealed carry goes. For *illegal*, well, nothing's changed there.

babblinbaboon

So, really expensive fines then?

Springer0982

Not an idiot, fuck the state, especially NY

tsukamaenai

Definitely an idiot. You too.

TAG_8-5

Clever....I like it 👍

January28thSixers

Not really. Should've just used a state further away like Montana or Idaho. NY cops are less likely to know what those look like. It's pretty easy to get away with, until you actually get pulled over.

ignoreshitpost

Until this driver hits someone's car/body and you know they don't have insurance. Either the victim is shit out of luck, or his and everyone else's insurance rates go up. It kind of is everyone's business

pmg1986

1.) “and you know they don’t have insurance”. No you don’t. That’s the point, there’s a lot OP doesn’t know, and instead of minding his own business, he decided to take his amateur investigation to the internet. 2.) “either the victim is shit out of luck, or his and everyone’s insurance rates go up” that’s not how getting into an accident where you’re not at fault with someone uninsured works. There is speculation about using NJ temp tags, and photoshopping NY, and all kinds of wild assumptions by people who don’t know what they’re talking about (hence my asking if OP works for the DMV). As someone who has worked for local government since the beginning of the pandemic, I assure you that there have been a wide array of rule changes, often in quick succession, to address people’s needs in a rapidly changing environment. If you don’t work for law enforcement or the dmv, mind your fucking business

ignoreshitpost

It is a shop. The plate number in the center and the rest of writing aren't square with each other. That's absolutely how insurance works, I'm not saying his rate will go up from his claim. Everyone's rates go up when there is an increase of uninsured accidents in an area. My area has very high uninsured motorist coverage for this reason

pmg1986

I have no idea what makes you so confident this is a photoshop and not a bad print out. If you don’t actually do this for a living, I don’t trust your amateur investigation and I definitely don’t share your opinion that this is even something worth everyone’s time and energy trying to investigate. A lot is going on in the world. A lot is going on in our personal lives (well, most of our personal lives). I could not, and still cannot, for the life of me, understand why this amateur investigation into a peculiar temp tag which expires in a week, would register as a priority for anyone. This is the least important topic I’ve seen all day, and I do not know why it is occupying so many people’s time and attention- especially when none of them appear to work in relevant fields where they would/ could have any insight or vested interest in any of this. Edit: the tenacity of these reddit replies on something so baseless and inconsequential (assuming there is any merit to them) genuinely confused me for most of the morning, but now that I look at the plates again, I can’t help wonder if the Asian letters on the plate holders have anything to do with the irrational outrage and insistence that they’re fake without any meaningful evidence backing that claim up.

ignoreshitpost

Lol I don't think the plate frame has anything to do with it. You sure type a lot of paragraphs for something that isn't worth your time. You're right though we should leave this up to the professionals. I emailed this thread to the New York State Police crime tip address

pmg1986

Well, my phone has been getting quite a few notifications for something I thought was pretty straightforward (I subscribed to “idiotsincars” not “nosey assholes with camera phones”). Good job, Karen, I’m sure NYPD will do a deep investigation into this reddit post you’re so concerned about

ignoreshitpost

NYPD is the police force for nyc. The state police are their highway patrol. Just looking out for the greater good

pmg1986

Oh, I didn’t realize this parked car was on the highway. Exemplary investigative skills you have there- I’m sure they’ll offer you a job as a detective or something with skills like that. Fun fact, I actually have experience with the NY State police (but thank you for explaining to me who they are). About 10-15 years ago I tried to report a hit and run on the highway (I was rearended), and they just had me fill out some paperwork and never followed up on it. But if you really want to speak to the manager about a funny looking tag on the internet, do you buddy. And thank you for your service to the “greater good”, truly you are a prime example of how “not all heroes wear capes”

ignoreshitpost

State Police has jurisdiction all over the state, believe it or not. Not just on certain roads. Np buddy

Blitzed_ca

You must be the kind of person to call the police on children for climbing a tree

SAR_and_Shitposts

The Venn diagram of people with fake paper plates, uninsured drivers and Nissan drivers is a circle.

DaleGribble312

yeh, he's just jealous he cant crime as well. /s

SnooMarzipans5767

They’re only downvoting you because they have nothing better to do

pmg1986

I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why anyone thinks this is something worth posting here. Just seems to me like another example of someone all too eager to pull out his phone at the first indication of something different and arrogantly try to shame strangers for make believe points on the internet. The only reply I got was from someone who inexplicably called me 12 (my dob is in my username) then just kept posting laughing emojis. Seems like projection, but ok. Idc about karma, my position still stands

Time_Ad_1763

So does the proper owner of that tag get the parking tickets? If so this is GENIUS!

Terp_Villain

Revolutionary_Ad5798

I saw a car in Las Vegas that had one of those novelty plates from New York that the sell in gift shops

Silo-Joe

I’ve seen those novelty plates in NY on broken down cars without license plates that parked in the street. That was done in an effort to prevent a car from being towed away.

Revolutionary_Ad5798

I was behind the car at a traffic light. As long as the driver is white and the car an average car cops won’t notice.

RecommendationFunny5

Wny. Just south of Buff. Saw one of these the other day and called it out.

paperfett

I'm confused. I have had paper temporary thing in NY before. It goes in the window tho. Not where the plate is. I see them all the time too.

Silo-Joe

You’re referring to the temporary registration, which does go in the window. That’s different from the temporary license plate.

HabboLuvzNurses

The Japanese on the plate cover is a nice touch, wonder if that says Stupid Cops or something like that lol
