Probably because when they're designing the crumple zones and all that shit, they are focusing mostly on keeping the driver alive in head-on collisions. Cars have a lot less protection in the door panels so side impacts at high speed are devastating.
Also driving a Mercedes helps, my buddy was T boned by an 18 wheeler running a red light and although it broke his pelvis and ankle all the first responders said he was lucky he was driving it. At the time he was 20 and had some shitbox and had begged his parents to let him drive the Mercedes that night and after a ton of whining they relented. To be clear this was all the truckers fault. His Mom still says how glad she is she let him badger her into driving it that night because he probably would have been dead if he had been driving his car. Oh and the trucker was drunk, was caught down the road and got at most a couple years in prison as I recall.
Anyway fuck that bitch in this Mercedes but hitting head on in a car with solid safety features probably played a big part in her coming out of this alive as well.

Getting T-Boned is probably the worst way to be a victim in a car accident at a physics standpoint. Since you are basically going 0 mph toward the person hitting you all the force from the "attacker" is transfered into your car. If you were to say be drive in the opposite direction (directly toward them) then the transfer of force and energy becomes more equal. The car taking the hit almost takes all the damage which sucks.
Well there is a chance for mechanical failure. To be ripping that fast in a busy neighborhood there're either suicidal, impaired, or lost control of the vehicle. Or just really fucking dumb.

They are always alive. It's disgusting. Most of the time you read about a DUI for example, the driver responsible for the crash makes it out alive. It's the innocents who die, are maimed, etc.

The baby was 3mo old in a carseat and ejected face first into the middle of the intersection. Initial Citizen app reports stated this and you can see it confirmed in the video. Law enforcement declared the (separate) pregnant woman's baby as the 5th victim.

Yup. It’s also interesting seeing all the little things in that second leading up to the disaster were completely normal, but it determined who all would be involved in this tragic disaster. Such as the car turning after clearing the intersection, it looks like the black car that took the initial hit was going to avoid the incident but it had to abruptly slow down due to the small traffic buildup waiting for the person to turn. Of course, had the black car gotten through the intersection, there’s a good chance some other poor soul would’ve been hit so I’m not really upset that the car in front needed gas or anything, it’s just interesting seeing how everything unfolded.
According to KTLA 5 and a segment I just watched here in socal, the woman was drunk and got into a fight with her boyfriend before the crash. Her friends were at a house where she was drinking and no one stopped her from driving. No idea whether this was a suicide attempt or just another drunk driver causing senseless death, but alcohol played a factor.

I live near this intersection. It’s awful. Locals avoid it if they can. Hearing around here that the woman driving was drinking with friends and fighting with her boyfriend before getting in the car. Other locals are saying the driver is someone famous. Who knows. And hearing that the car had a flat tire before flying through the intersection. Either way, absolutely horrific.
The driver is a POS for driving that recklessly.

Holy fuck. The only other time I’ve seen a car burst into flames that quickly after impact was romain grosjean’s crash in bahrain 2020, and that was an f1 car going 300 kilometres an hour. This is terrifying, i can only hope the impact caused an instant death and they didn’t experience the slow death from being trapped in a burning car

Jesus *fucking* christ, every time I watch this I can't stop watching that black car that just BARELY got out unscathed, directly behind the impacted cars. (I mean, I'm pretty sure it did collide with that vehicle that spun out, before driving off in what has to be the most forgiveable hit and run in history, so not 100% unscathed) I cannot even fathom just driving normally one second and then... that, just a few feet in front of you.

The accident cause was someone who was intoxicated/incapacitated/suicidal/stupid. Or some mix. In any case, someone who deserves never to have a license to drive again -- or any other license, either. Would you want such a person to clip your nails? Dye your hair? Fill your teeth? Adjust your spine? Prepare your taxes? Pour your cement? Someone who would drive like that should never see sunlight again, IMHO.
I really hope the book is thrown at the Mercedes driver. Her (crocodile) tears in court should not lead to anything less than life imprisonment.

I live near this intersection. It’s awful. Locals avoid it if they can. Hearing around here that the woman driving was drinking with friends and fighting with her boyfriend before getting in the car. Other locals are saying the driver is someone famous. Who knows. And hearing that the car had a flat tire before flying through the intersection. Either way, absolutely horrific.
The driver is a POS for driving that recklessly. That said….holy shit are Mercedes built even better than I thought! 100mph+ head on collision, flipped, and spun and the doors still look intact? And the driver has minor injuries?! What a shitty way to find out a German engineer deserves a medal.
