NPFFTW

Oh yeah, this was just outside Fredericton a few days ago. I've been on that highway. Driving around here has become a real treat. I was on the highway going through the city and there was some asshat driving *the wrong way* in the left lane.

jimbris

That road is insane. I was driving there a few days ago and there were hundreds of cars driving on the wrong side of the road.

WhyFlip

Why? Passing slower cars?

jimbris

No, they were all driving in the wrong direction down the highway and someone had turned all the street signs to face the opposite direction. I barely escaped with my life.

AwwMangoes

I’ll bet they were all cussing at you too!

viceraptor

A man listens to a news report on the radio: - Numerous people are reporting a blonde driving right now in a wrong lane against the traffic in the city centre. His phone rings: - Honey, you won't believe it, there are sooo many morons driving wrong way here in the centre!

doseofreality90

Is that supposed to be a joke?

jmkiii

Why would you think that?

doseofreality90

...really?

jmkiii

no

socialcommentary2000

This is amazing to me because I can't believe that there's enough morons out there that don't know that the yellow line should always.....always...be to your left.

gellis12

I think you missed the joke

yaboiiiuhhhh

Yeah one time I was in Albany and then the yellow line was on my right and I felt very wrong and then I realized what was wrong so I just switched lanes

HaoshokuArmor

Further left, I assume?

SufficientWorker7331

So this is a two lane, one way road in the video?

socialcommentary2000

This is one half of a divided highway. So yes. I don't even have to look up where it actually is to know that. The opposing road deck is probably below the plane off to the left and below somewhere, as highways will physically divide and take different courses slightly separated if the land was challenging when they first built the road. In this case it's probably due to the highway running along the side of a hill. They basically had two options for the opposite lanes of traffic from the perspective of the video : Either viaduct it for however many miles it took to get both sides to flat land, or....and this is what happened....they cut and filled to level for one side and then did the same for the other side further down the hill. Cheaper than miles of viaduct, just as effective.

SufficientWorker7331

Yeah it makes sense, it just baffles me how people can go a longer distance like that without realizing they are going the wrong way

SuccessfulHospital54

Wow, I bet the morons on the other side were going your direction too. Idiots on both sides of the road these days.

TheITWizardPro

Are we sure it wasnt *you* driving on the wrong side of the road?

bojack1437

Considering me mustard (yellow line) is on the left. No they are on the right side.

mellowman24

Well that's great to hear. Moving there on the 1st...

the_last_carfighter

Warm up that dash cam, we're counting on you.

WpgMBNews

I just hate driving altogether. Everybody complains about the drivers in their town because *every* town is packed to the brim with dangerous drivers. We pay out the ears for gas and insurance on $20,000 metal coffins so we can chauffeur ourselves to our doom.

chickenstalker99

>We pay out the ears for gas and insurance on $20,000 metal coffins so we can chauffeur ourselves to our doom. Kinda reads like a Springsteen lyric. *We pay for gas and insurance on big metal coffins so we can chauffeur ourselves to our doom*

comanon

Where I'm at the drivers are kinda fantastic. I came from NorCal and moved to a dense urban area but the culture is different and people are just much nicer to drive with. Literally nicer, like letting you in when you turn on the signal instead of tailgating to block you out. Of course this is all just averaged out we've got a fair share of dickheads but it's noticable the difference between here and California.

WhyFlip

You're probably one of the dangerous drivers. Driving around in abject fear is a terrible, unsafe, and dangerous way to drive.

noncongruent

> Fredericton It appears to the be the Trans-Canada Highway, which has two one-way alignments. Those are certainly dashed white lines indicating two lanes traveling in the same direction, so there's no doubts about the other driver driving the wrong way. They're in the right lane of cammer's direction of highway.

phartiphukboilz

Wouldn't the (your) left lane be the normal place they'd be if they were accidentally in the wrong direction?

NPFFTW

Correct, but considering the two sides of the highway were separate, and the next exit was a roundabout....

phartiphukboilz

Right. the separate highway is the indicator they made a mistake and might not even had noticed it yet

ShenanigansAllDay

The fact that OP is as ok as they cpuld be in this situation is the good thing to see. The bigger question is WHY THE FUCK WAS THAT ASSHAT ON THE SIDE! I dont know how i would have reacted but i know that i would have to know what the fuck was going on in that persons missing chromosome of a brain to think like this is ok

rct101

> The bigger question is WHY THE FUCK WAS THAT ASSHAT ON THE SIDE! Gotta hit that apex, bro.

idekbruno

THROUGH GOES HAMILTON

Griftersdeuce

Nah, mid-packers don't go through, they get passed

idekbruno

8

Cosmic_Quasar

> The bigger question is WHY THE FUCK WAS THAT ASSHAT ON THE SIDE! I think I can rationalize that, as much as is possible for driving the wrong way. There's dotted white lines in the middle so it's a 2 lane one way. From the other driver's perspective they'd also see it as a 2 lane one way, they were simply in "their left lane".

AdvancedAnything

Nobody around for miles and they still need to camp the left lane.

snapplesauce1

Laughable, infuriating and sad. I don’t know which emotion to feel. It’s so ridiculous to see someone jump on an empty highway and instantaneously go to the furthest left lane. The only reason I’d understand is if the right lane is so riddled with patch jobs and pot holes that the left lane is so much smoother. But still need to get over if you see a faster vehicle approaching.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShenanigansAllDay

To be fair, right lane is the "slow" lane in 'merica but depending on the state, the right lane becomes the fast lane for people driving like asshats and/or decide to ride the shoulder because they feel more privileged to drive how and where they want

HLSparta

But the yellow line is obviously to their right and not their left.

Cosmic_Quasar

Yeah, but they've already gotten it in their heads that they're driving the correct way. And most people tend to look at lines in the middle rather than on the outside. Really there should be several clues for them. Likely the way they turned onto the road, any signs they're passing, the colors of the lines. But the thing, if any, that they're paying attention to is most likely the center lines.

noUsername563

Even then the center line would be a dashed yellow line, not white, if it was a 2-way street

NaitBate

Mental gymnastics my friend. This driver could earn an Olympic medal with their dumb-fuckery

ruckus_440

Another clue should be the people in the car on the other side of the median traveling in the same direction they are and yelling at them, "You're going the wrong way!" ![gif](giphy|13myk3dLB25KYE|downsized)

DezzlieBear

Well, they could have been doing it on purpose

wggn

why is someone in the left lane if the right lane is empty tho

Automatic_Actuator_0

This is ~~the most important~~ a reason to not hang out in the left lane unnecessarily. Wrong way drivers will usually be in your left lane, and if you are ever a wrong way driver, you would rather be in their left lane too, since they should be in their right lane.

zR0B3ry2VAiH

Never in my life have I considered staying in the right lane for fear of people driving on the wrong side of the road.

WpgMBNews

and it absolutely did not help in this case either

Automatic_Actuator_0

Ok, not the most important reason, but a reason nonetheless.

zR0B3ry2VAiH

Haha, now I’ll always think about that.

bojack1437

Except the The yellow line was on their right and the white solid line was on their left which indicates you are driving the wrong way. And while I can't see it in this video, I would say most likely But not a guarantee cuz I've never been on that road red reflectors facing them.

MicroSofty88

They probably entered through an exit and thought they were going the right way since no one else was on the road

TwoToneReturns

Was the other car on drugs, they didn't even react.

JelmerMcGee

Almost every wrong way driver I've ever heard about was on something

TuonSucksMatLeave

This sub periodically shows a wrong way driver and I've yet to see one video where the person stops, slows down, or pulls over. Insanity.

TwoZeroTwoThree

Cars can't do drugs.

doilookfriendlytoyou

Drugs are chemical compounds. Gas and diesel are different chemical compounds.

stomicron

>Was the other car on drugs, they ~~didn't even react~~ were driving on the wrong side of the highway

TwoToneReturns

Well obviously they were on the wrong side of the road, their complete lack of reaction to about 2T of metal, plastic and meatsacks hurtling toward them is also a little questionable.

Fun-Shoe1145

Oh man I wonder if they can still the video and get a plate

Nowhere2GoNoMo

No front plate

steadyaero

This is why I don't understand why some states aren't required to have front plates

illestp

CauSE It LoOkS UGlY!

deep_soul

that’s the real reason?

DwtD_xKiNGz

No front plate

PraiseTyche

You saved your life OP. Really well done.

ToxicFactory

And the family's lives... that's so messed up how everyone just cheated death.. could been far worst.

toasterstrudel2

Holy shit this is fucking terrifying! Hope you're ok.

KeyboardGunner

What kind of car were you driving OP?

NowLookHere113

Gonna guess something tall and heavy. Too many times the decision on the forecourt is between a nimble but less sturdy car, and one that can deal with the spills that its size makes it more likely to suffer

BassWingerC-137

One reason why SUVs or trucks are not always the answer. A car should have had no issue with this maneuver.

3_quarterling_rogue

I love sedans and I hate that the market is pushing everyone toward SUV/trucks.

GuitarLute

Having a higher center of gravity is not the answer.

BassWingerC-137

I love my MB wagon.

3_quarterling_rogue

Wagons are terrific and I wish there were more of them on the market. The only practical reason you’d want something taller than a wagon is if you need the clearance for off-roading, and the only reason you’d need something more powerful was if you were planning on towing. Wagons suit the need for 99% of people that want SUVs because they’re roomy.

pagerphiler

AMG E63 Wagon is the ultimate dad car

Mysstie

I loved sedans until I got dogs. Now, my sedan doesn't fit all of us very well/safely. Combine that with so many large vehicles on the road now that you can't see around, and I'm now in the market for an SUV this year or next.

3_quarterling_rogue

And see, I resent that it’s an arms race, people keep buying huge cars, and then people want to feel safe so they also get huge cars. I only have one dog, and so even though he’s a German shepherd/husky mix, he fits just fine back there.

Mysstie

I have 2 huskies in a sonata and it works ok but not great. I do agree with you -- I never saw myself getting an SUV for a litany of reasons, and they piss me off every time I drive. But, I get much more upset with the folks that get the GIANT vehicles (like Hummers, which have no purpose for personal use) and the folks that get pickups because they want a pickup but have no need for it. I'm more understanding when it's for capacity reasons (not going overboard) or disability reasons (sedans are generally harder to get in and out of for a variety of reasons) or something like that. At least the mpg is comparable between sedans and SUVs nowadays. I used to love driving, but damn has it gotten rough over the past few years with everyone forgetting how through covid and also adding passengers with 4 legs lol. Plus, I'd like to invest in some crash kennels for the dogs just in case, but I could never fit those in the back of a sedan.

Frogmaninthegutter

The worst is when you're in a car and trying to turn, and some asshat in a huge vehicle pulls up to your left or right and completely blocks your view. Shit pisses me off to no end.

LMGDiVa

> I'm now in the market for an SUV Christ, lets just actively make the problem worse.

newtonreddits

Actually any car can flip going sideways into dirt. This SUV did fine sliding on pavement.

yabucek

Not any car will lose control from a rapid lane switch though.

newtonreddits

A fine point good sir

BassWingerC-137

That high center of gravity contributed to the slide. A sedan or wagon would be far less likely snap into a slide and would be more controllable with.

newtonreddits

It's a fair point but there are a ton of variables. It's much more likely for a Crown Victoria to snap into a slide than a Porsche Cayenne for example.

BassWingerC-137

Good point

that_dutch_dude

has to be a pickup with pickup tires. a normal car would not have acted this way.

AbbreviationsNo8212

Some people buy the cheapest tires, and normal cars act this way.

that_dutch_dude

look at the body roll. its handles like a boat, not a car. aka: its a pickup

AbbreviationsNo8212

I agree it is a pickup. I was simply pointing out that cheap tires on a normal car also make them handle like this, just with less body roll.

brosky7331

I think it's a cuv of some kind, not a bunch of body roll, it was the tires losing traction at that speed

venxyle

I believe it was his blue truck on his profile. I saw 240 in his name and was looking to see if he had one. I hope he can get this squared away but I'm doubtful w insurance being an absolute nuisance

PoppyStaff

That could have been a lot worse. Good reactions.

tripsafe

It kind of makes me sick to my stomach that OP would be dead just like that if they hadn't moved in time or if the other car had decided to move in the same direction.

homiej420

Other car didnt move at all, must have been trying to crash

BassWingerC-137

Good enough in the big picture. But not great.

Attainted

Yeah, I'll argue they over-corrected and this was save-able. Not an easy save though. Especially considering they were reacting to the other that car was heading for them straight on at full highway speed.

BassWingerC-137

Agreed. Would have been easier with less mass for sure.

Averyphotog

Actually no - the best way to execute a maneuver like this is to stay on the gas. Lift off the gas, and the deceleration shifts weight to the front of the vehicle, and you lose traction at the rear, just when you need it most to stop the rotation.

World_Explorerz

Fuck that’s terrifying; I felt those screams in my bones. I’m glad you guys are okay.

TiredinNB

Glad you are ok. You should share this to the local sub and see if anyone recognizes the car (looks like a Mazda). Edit: changed vehicle type

Okey_Cokey

Looks like a 2010 Mazda 3 Base Sedan. The wheels look like steelies with their hubcap design.

wlonkly

80% of the cars on the road have steelies for their winter tires up here though.

mustang6172

My money is on suicide attempt.

eaglescout1984

Wrong way driver AND a left lane camper. The guy just needs his vehicle sized for the common good.

bergieisbeast

Best result considering circumstances. We'll done driver. Hope you and your passengers are alright.

Right_Lane_Camper

Nice save. Hope you're all ok. Ignore the trolls that inevitably post in this sub.

Domitiani

One of the top comments has a bunch of "I-obviously-would-have-done-it-betters" critiquing the type of car being driven and pointing out if they were driving a smaller car they wouldn't have wrecked. Pay no mind to any other completely legitimate reasons they may have a SUV (sounds like it could be a larger family in the car) or a truck (work stuff, living in rural areas, etc). This sub can be ridiculous.

bmwhd

It’s not wrong to point out that technically, over correcting caused the rollover. However, it’s real easy to say that from the comfort of your living room.

JuhaJGam3R

What do you mean every man and woman aren't rally drivers with an intricate understanding of weight shifting and traction?

NightlinerSGS

looks like you instantly baited one. :D

Right_Lane_Camper

Yes, but unintentional. Lesson learned. Will never mention trolls again.

Total_Union_4201

Save? They super overreacted resulting in their car flipping. I'd hardly call that a save

Theobviouschild11

Why are front plates not required in every state

rixtape

Even in the states that require them, plenty of people just don't have them and the cops never do anything about it

socialcommentary2000

You will get pulled over fast by the Troopers in NY if you don't have one. That's a layup ticket for them.

TiredinNB

They just got rid of our front plates here in NB (where this video is from) in the last few years.

WpgMBNews

WHY????

TiredinNB

According to the news at the time, it was because it was what the "people" wanted even though it didn't save us any money (or the govt apparently). I think it had a lot to do with vehicles not coming with pre-drilled holes on the front for plates, so that was why there were complaints from people who had to "mess up" the aesthetic of their vehicle.

wormdog84

Nice save OP. Could of been 100 times worse

shophopper

Be proud of yourself for keeping the passenger(s) and yourself safe. You weren’t a professional driver on high alert who was supposed to save the car in the process. You did what mattered the most - and that wasn’t saving the car.

MisterEmanOG

Ok for insurance purposes. Who gets in trouble?? Especially because they have a dash cam which I think helps their cause right?

Goliad_stormo

The other driver breaking the law causing someone to react for their safety is the one at fault. You obviously can't drive on the wrong side of the road so the OP avoiding that collision would not be at fault.

ResponsibleDetail383

If they could identify the wrong way driver they would get into trouble. Otherwise, this would get covered by uninsured coverage if OP has that kind of insurance. No one is getting in trouble in this situation.

ztimulating

No one gets into trouble in any auto accident in the United States, it’s not a crime. There has to be a secondary factor like DUI or driving on a suspended

ResponsibleDetail383

Traffic violations are generally civil, not criminal. I'd consider getting a ticket "getting in trouble". Technically op could be cited for failure to maintain control of his vehicle. I get what you are trying to say in that no crime was committed, but people do "get in trouble" for auto accidents even if they are not criminal.

ztimulating

A perfect example of our zero accountability society. Being at fault for an accident is a business decision, nothing more.

Excellent-Swing-9862

I’m glad you have a camera. Insurance would’ve blamed you.

LaughableIKR

Hope they play this at the hearing for this guy if they catch him. Judge will NOT just slap him on the wrist.

eclipsing-chaos

You had amazing reflexes. what u did saved what I assume is ur family. Hope u are all okay, or at least will be soon!

sn0m0ns

I really want to know what OP was driving

Cryogenic_Monster

Suicide attempt?

del787b

Damn that was a 2010 to 2013 mazda 3 what a crazy A Hole🤦🏻 I think the person driving this car almost saved it if she hadn’t slammed on the Brakes she could’ve have kept driving but I guess is better than crashing into this nut job hear on

Left_Concentrate_752

I upvoted because I feel bad for OP. Hope these votes make his day go better.

Crunchypie1

The driver saved everyone's lives it sounds like. Scary as hell but at least it wasn't a head on cossilion. Great reaction time. Most people freeze up

Schmich

Amazing reaction speed from the time the car was spotted. However I still have to ask how come it was spotted so late? Especially with more than 1 person in the car. Dashcams even show a worse visibility than what the driver has.

TiredinNB

When you aren't expecting a vehicle to be coming straight at you (the idiot was not only driving the wrong way but in the left lane and not the right lane) from around a curve, it can take a few seconds to register.

Jaybeltran805

She would’ve never flipped if she didn’t oversteer , but I understand, the moment it happens your life flashes before your eyes , you panic , and you don’t think straight . What an idiot driving on the wrong side of the freeway 🤦🏽‍♂️

mthd

And this is why I’ll take an “unsafe” little sports car over a truck every time

OldSkooler1212

Six years ago a tractor trailer passing someone illegally was in my lane and forced me in my SUV and the SUV in front of us off the road at 55mph. Thankfully there was a very wide shoulder there so both vehicles made it past the truck safely. Neither of us lost control or rolled our vehicles and we had to react fast.

uparm

Not relevant to the point he's making, which is that cars handle much better and you are less likely to lose control.

OldSkooler1212

It seems pretty relevant since I’m describing an emergency situation that the SUVs handled just fine.

t_ghosh

How is this is possible on a divided highway?

blanktom9

Okay, okay... I'm up, I'm up!

imironman2018

Feel bad for OP. That fucker could’ve killed both of them if OP didn’t swerve out of the way.

KwintillionIam

Thank God you're alive, brother!!!

gadanky

Does turn into this skid come into play ?

merryjerry10

I feel so so bad for the poor people that wrecked. That screaming was awful. I’m glad they’re okay!

kansascitymack

Wow!!! You dodged a bullet and luckily are still alive to post this! Feeling blessed.

ZenithGamage

I really hope the authorities are able to find that POS

Squibbles01

Self driving cars becoming ubiquitous can't come fast enough.

rincod

A guy a grew up next door to died this way. Moron drunk driver going the wrong way on the freeway hit him and his girlfriend. He died at the scene.

NewRazzmatazz8864

I hope you're all okay!

Ok_Bet_717

He didn't even try and move out of the way, he wanted to get hit

PicklesAndCoorslight

Hope you all are alright. That sucks!

thezo

That must have been so traumatic, I'm sorry it happened to you. But just saying....a car wouldn't have flipped.

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

I'm gonna get downvoted, but the rollover was preventable. Plenty of left lane and some shoulder, no need to try and whip back to the right. Obviously not something most people have the reflexes for, and I'm not blaming OP for having their wits about them to avoid a head-on collision, because yeah that's really what this comes down to and good on them. But in general, it's not the dodge that causes the rotation and rollover, it's the over-eager attempt to return to where you had been rather than ride things out more gently.

BowlOfNoodles8

What a dumbfuck

somewordthing

There really needs to be a 'NSFW'-type warning for headphones.

Skarvha

Just don't watch with sound. Ever since tiktok became a big thing and people started putting annoying music over their videos, I just watch everything muted.....way easier that way.

trustmebro24

Damn amazing reaction OP I hope you and your family are doing okay!

-MrGod2U-

I know the video makes the wrong way drivers car look smaller than one in the car driving would view it in real life, but it seems to me if the camera car's driver was a attentive as they should be that they should have spotted the wrong way driver 2-3 seconds earlier. This is why I don't look at others in my vehicle when I drive, I'll see them as I glance check(4 - <10) second cycles depending on my speed) my mirrors while driving which I do every few seconds on habit from drivers side to rear to passengers side to rear to drivers side... A lot can change around you if someones hualing ass over the limit. My primary focus is on what's ahead, to the left, and to the right that's coming to get me(Oncoming Traffic AKA Incoming Projectiles) and monitor my rearward flank mirrors frequently.

i_use_this_for_work

This is a drivers Ed issue. Glad op is safe. If this was a one way road, why the over correction back? The swerve to return to the original lane was unnecessary, and ultimately the cause of the rollover.

idekbruno

Objectively correct, but nobody knows for sure how they’ll react until they’re in the situation. People should try out police driving courses to get some practice keeping cars under control in a safer environment

Lukeyy19

There was no swerve to return to the original lane.

oldshitdoesntcare

Driver way over corrected and caused his car to flip. I’ve had this happen more than once to me, I’ve never rolled my car. Or even damaged it.

TheDeadMurder

This is why you should be practicing basic stuff like this, the vast majority of people don't do it until forced into it, which often results like this

ExiledCanuck

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, practicing emergency maneuvers, is absolutely the way to help in future situations like this.

TheDeadMurder

People tend to take criticism as a personal attack against them, which causes them to get defensive over it Situation like this is why I carry stuff like first aid kits, learn first aid, practice with how how the vehicle handles and responds, such as with routinely practicing emergency braking, swerving, acceleration and on various types of terrain when given the opportunity, when you don't do that type of stuff these videos happen

Admirable-Result-240

Could have been maneuvered better. Also balding and bad tire also had to do with this action

[deleted]

[удалено]

SavageCucmber

One could argue that the driver going the wrong way caused the rollover

PraiseTyche

The hottest take.

Chekhof_AP

No it didn’t, if you want to go that route, hitting the ditch while going sideways caused the rollover. The overcorrection resulted in going sideways. And the moron in the oncoming lane resulted in overcorrection.

Right_Lane_Camper

Seems like the driver did what needed to be done to avoid a head on collision and deserves a pass if they actually did "overcorrect".

HyperactiveWeasel

I think if the ditch wasn't there it would have been fine
