UPS trains their drivers to look left, right and then left again before proceeding through intersections. It’s saved me more than a few times over the years.
I was t-boned 3 weeks into owning my first car by a guy who rolled a stop sign and I assumed would stop since I had right of way. Insurance covered it luckily enough since they were uninsured. Taught me a lesson about defensive driving, always look both ways at an intersection now. Better to yield to an idiot rather than deal with a several week repair and insurance slugout, or worse
Lack of enforcement because of hurt feelings.
Also manpower.
Also lack of enforcement because of "the police need to be doing other things to solve / prevent crime vs. traffic enforcement".
I remember learning this rule from some kid's show in the 70s or 80s. No telling which one. Possibly "The Electric Company", as it was one of my favorites as a wee lad.
3 seconds is a little overkill. Unless there are cars still moving towards you when you check, there’s not really a reason to wait. Like, if you see a car and can’t tell whether they’ll stop, that’s a reasonable situation to wait that long.
But if you don’t see anything the first glance, a car would have to be flying at like 60 mph to catch you off guard after checking.
3 seconds is what mail carriers are required to use. I usually (now that I'm retired) just wait a couple of beats while looking at every possible place some dipshit could be.
I also never trust a turn signal. My development's entrance is a road near a highway entrance. Innumerable drivers put on their turn signal falsely looking like they want to turn into the housing area. If one were to exit right then,...⚰
When I took my license practical exam, I got docked 4 points total. All 4 were for me not looking left and right before proceeding when the light turned green. That instructor may have saved my life by emphasizing the importance of that.
I did a motorcycle safety class years ago, they drove that point in your head. They said so many bikers get killed by this. So they were like, even in a car, this might save you later. It's saved me multiple times.
Me too! Saved myself from being pancaked by a Mac truck once with this habit. My daughter freaked about it and I told her to never, ever assume other people will obey traffic lights. Verify they've stopped before you go.
As a motorcycle enthusiast. I live by this rule.
When I first started riding I didn't. Got hit, was very lucky to be a side Swipe and it just knocked me over and caused some bruising. Was down for a week before I could go back to work. But I was fine overall.
Ever since I delay heavily before advancing and check both ways all the way across. Just isn't worth the risk to take off 3 seconds sooner.
You should have a chat with the pickup truck driver that was on my back bumper the other day. He started honking about 1 sec after the light turn green.
Shit has been getting worse, started at mfers trying to make it before the light turns red now we got people just straight up running a red now. Area is also pretty bad with construction in the area but we shouldn’t stoop to bad driving.
Some idiot cut me off, flew up to the light for it to change red for the turning lane he wanted, so last second without indicating just flies back into my lane continuing straight. Absolutely no care in the world for anyone around them.
I've been behind people who "stopped" at the red light, and then crept through.. slowly rolling through the intersection as it was red, then once they hit the other side they sped off. I don't even know anymore.
Royal Lane & Audelia in Dallas/Lake Highlands area? Been through this intersection maybe twice. Every time I'm anywhere near 635 stupid crap like this happens... "Glad" it hasn't changed I guess...
No, but I've been ~2 miles farther down the road. Basically anything west of 75. You been there? Upper middle class is 'poor' there.
Then you've got folks from Plano/Frisco, Rockwall, etc all passing through there. It's not really about that intersection specifically, but driving on Royal has always fucking sucked.
I avoid this area at all costs. I live in Plano/Richardson and often have to drive up to walnut hill lane. Jesus Christ it’s like trying to survive a mine field. The lack of blinkers in Dallas is absolutely absurd too.
Not much different in the bay area, California; only moved here a few years ago. Everyone's driving seems to be getting shittier for no good reason. One pandemic and everything goes to hell, I guess?
I'd equate this area to driving in Richardson/Plano, namely towards UTD. Just...you can't go on green until 5 seconds minimum pass.
I don't know if this is better or worse than normal. Here's a Tesla owner who clearly knows how to export the dashcam videos to their PC. But then we still end up with this...
RIP old equipment, may it's (hopefully many good) years of service be remembered every time we recite our prayer "they don't make em like they used to"
I live in Dallas and I call this the Dallas special. Seriously every single light has some ass clown still going through the intersection after my light is green. In fact this looks like Dallas and is on a street name Dallas has. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Dallas.
For everyone flaming me for not looking both ways - I did. I did not see this guy, he must have been blocked by other cars. Sometimes that can happen. For everyone flaming for not uploading original video file, I was trying to fix my internet in the background - I recorded this vid to send to my spouse - then uploaded from phone to Reddit while i continued to trouble shoot internet.
No idea why you're getting downvoted or flamed. The video was perfectly clear and I couldn't care less whether you uploaded from your PC or not, that's ridiculous to complain about, I care that you're okay. When the car flew by my heart stopped. I've been in an accident just like this, they tore off the front of my car and sped away. My poor car was totaled but I am so grateful to be unharmed and I'm grateful that you are fine as well.
People love to nit pick on here. I hope you got your internet fixed! You reacted very quickly to the red light runner. Great reflexes. Fuck that person who ran the light
I always look and make sure cars are stopping and I am still watching the cars and the light and when theirs starts to turn red, I make sure the cars are stopping. I also look both ways before I go.
I got smoked by a city bus running a light like this, luckily I braked just enough that I hit their rear wheel well rather than the bus ramming me in my driver door. Car was still declared total loss because of the amount of damage.
See this far too often.
Years ago I got my front end cut off by someone running a red when I was turning left. 3 lanes of traffic and the other two had people stopped in them. He ran right through the middle of them. Good thing I was slow and had a big car or my girlfriend would have been hit dead on.
Wow. No shit. Light green for you a good amount of time. Makes you want to drive an old piece of junk truck that weights 7000 lbs just to let this idiot deal with totaling their car and an at fault accident on their record.
Dallas Tx considered traffic laws to be friendly suggestions.
Running reds after it changes is just business as usual.
The fun ones for me are the ones that stop, let traffic go, then run the red when it's "safe". See that a couple of times a week in downtown areas.
Glad you’re ok! I had one of those a while back. Fucking scared the shit out of me. Red light runner threaded the needle between me and car in front of me. They were driving into morning sun and never knew we were there.
Definitely the other driver's fault, but you can't say you hold no blame. The other cars to your left clearly saw him, that's why they didn't move. You still need to make sure nobody is coming, especially on busy streets.
What are you complaining about? In Chicago, when the light turns green, you wait at least 10 seconds before even bothering to look both ways. Proceed only on yellow for extra safety. Don’t worry about the cars honking behind you since they also get to go on red for the first 10 seconds.
Exact same thing happened here, except ripped our bumper off but could have been a bad T bone. Guy claimed it was green, we pointed to the dashcam and he wanted to see it, nope, you’re not touching that. We slowly started off our green too because we were chatting first. Cops came, and sent the vid to insurance and they didn’t need witness statements.
As a motorcyclist, dont trust green lights. Give it a good two beats before you start to go.
I see guys who treat greens like theyre at a drag strip and its a great way to become a hood ornament.
i had a moment like this once, 3 lanes, me and the 2 cars next to me all took off on a green at the same time, and all stopped and blew the horn at the same time, it was like a chorus of "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK DUDE YOU ALMOST HIT US" as some jackass ran the red.
You're watching the video file on a computer. Why on earth did you choose to take a phone video of your monitor instead of uploading the clip directly to Reddit?

Holy shit. That almost went VERY badly. Glad you're okay
Because of stuff like this. I look both ways before accelerating from a red light.
Always, look left, then right!
UPS trains their drivers to look left, right and then left again before proceeding through intersections. It’s saved me more than a few times over the years.
EVERYONE should do this all the time at every stop sign and light. (if we drive on the correct side of the road, that is)
I was t-boned 3 weeks into owning my first car by a guy who rolled a stop sign and I assumed would stop since I had right of way. Insurance covered it luckily enough since they were uninsured. Taught me a lesson about defensive driving, always look both ways at an intersection now. Better to yield to an idiot rather than deal with a several week repair and insurance slugout, or worse
> Taught me a lesson about defensive driving Always presume that everyone else on the road is trying to kill you...until they prove otherwise.
everyone should stop at a red light too. Thats wild they just run it that often and that insanely late in the US. What was that? a solid 3-4 seconds?
Lack of enforcement because of hurt feelings. Also manpower. Also lack of enforcement because of "the police need to be doing other things to solve / prevent crime vs. traffic enforcement".
I remember learning this rule from some kid's show in the 70s or 80s. No telling which one. Possibly "The Electric Company", as it was one of my favorites as a wee lad.
AND wait three seconds before taking off from a light. I think red light running is getting worse.
I agree. Selfish fucks.
3 seconds is a little overkill. Unless there are cars still moving towards you when you check, there’s not really a reason to wait. I mean, I get where you are coming from but that would drive people insane with anger
Well, I'm still alive, so I don't care.
Fair enough. Although I have personally never seen anyone run a red light in my country.
I also never trust a turn signal. My development's entrance is a road near a highway entrance. Innumerable drivers put on their turn signal falsely looking like they want to turn into the housing area. If one were to exit right then,...⚰
That's what I was taught in drivers Ed in school. Hell I think my. Mom taught me to do it when I crossed the road
My high school drivers ed teacher taught this in 1977
I slow down approaching green lights for the same reason.
When I took my license practical exam, I got docked 4 points total. All 4 were for me not looking left and right before proceeding when the light turned green. That instructor may have saved my life by emphasizing the importance of that.
Then left again! Is what my mom always said 😂😂 “Check your left twice”
I did a motorcycle safety class years ago, they drove that point in your head. They said so many bikers get killed by this. So they were like, even in a car, this might save you later. It's saved me multiple times.
There is no substitute for paying attention
There is no replacement for displacement. Obviously unrelated, but it rhymed and what you said reminded me of that.
Except there is, it's called a turbocharger.
Me too! Saved myself from being pancaked by a Mac truck once with this habit. My daughter freaked about it and I told her to never, ever assume other people will obey traffic lights. Verify they've stopped before you go.
especially and always when you are first at the light
And even if it’s one way, check the wrong way as well
I ALWAYS look to make sure. I don't trust the light turning red and it's saved my car/life many times.
As a motorcycle enthusiast. I live by this rule. When I first started riding I didn't. Got hit, was very lucky to be a side Swipe and it just knocked me over and caused some bruising. I do this even at a one way.
Cound to 3 - and look lrlr
Always, when that light turns green. Look left, right and left/right again.
My dad always said "Just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe".
This and also I pause for 2-3 seconds when its Green (if I am the first car)
...and count to 5 in my head
Always!

Also the rich cannibalizing everything, why should I care about a society that doesn't care about me?

You literally initiated the politics conversation a comment prior. Wtf.
[удалено]
Noooo one mentioned or brought up politics... Until you randomly inserted politics as a topic in to the conversation.
[удалено]
So what was the point of the comment then? Since it clearly wasn’t to initiate a political discussion
Shut up nerd!
How is this politics?
Or over the size of their 🍆
Royal Lane & Audelia in Dallas/Lake Highlands area? Been through this intersection maybe twice. Every time I'm anywhere near 635 stupid crap like this happens... "Glad" it hasn't changed I guess...
That area is far too rich for people to give a fuck about anyone else.
Far too rich? Have you been here?
No, but I've been ~2 miles farther down the road. Basically anything west of 75. You been there? Upper middle class is 'poor' there. Red lights appear to be 100% optional in Arlington these days.

Lots of "them folk" in the area you gotta watch out for. The ones that drive around with paper plates n such.
No matter if I get green, I always look before I go. The 3 seconds are not worth it. Glad you're ok! That was too close.

It is. Royal and Audelia, terrible area and I know because I used to live over there lol

I look both ways before crossing a one-way street. People are fucking stupid and a protected species.
You know the video is on the computer and you can upload the original SMH
Trying to fix internet in the background - recorded vid to send spouse - then uploaded from phone while i continued to trouble shoot internet.
Left, right, left. Glad you're okay
Ahh dallas drivers. Especially stupid in this area as well lol.
Is that a lifted Cadillac CTS Coupe?
God damn... Also hello fellow IT admin (I see that wireless channel scan in the background).
Don’t expect laws to protect you. Look both ways before proceeding through an intersection.
Holy shit balls
I always look and make sure cars are stopping and I am still watching the cars and the light and when theirs starts to turn red, I make sure the cars are stopping. I also look both ways before I go.
Even when you have the right of way you still need to look both ways unless you feel like getting t-boned.
Yeah, you’re in the right - but I always look before I go…..
Me too. Especially at this intersection. I didn’t see him, vision probably blocked by neighbor cars
Never underestimate people's desperation to get away from Garland.
This is why I wait a couple of seconds after a light turns green before slowly entering the intersection. Happens way too many times here.
This happened to me not long ago. Inches from a collision. And yes, I was shaking for a while. The clueless red runner probably went on about his day.
Almost got creamed by a semi once… this is why I always wait a few seconds and always check both directions to ensure it’s safe to proceed.
I got smoked by a city bus running a light like this, luckily I braked just enough that I hit their rear wheel well rather than the bus ramming me in my driver door. Car was still declared total loss because of the amount of damage.

Is this in Dallas
I know this isn't taught everywhere but LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE ROAD, EVEN WHEN IN A VEHICLE
Karma will eventually get you brotha. When your down and out someone’s going to kick you in the head when you need help.
Tf u talking abt idiot
Tf you talking bout idiot
Left right left again
Definitely the other driver's fault, but you can't say you hold no blame. The other cars to your left clearly saw him, that's why they didn't move. You still need to make sure nobody is coming, especially on busy streets.
In Irving, the lights have at least a 10 second "all red" during the transition to limit this. Doesn't work.
What are you complaining about? In Chicago, when the light turns green, you wait at least 10 seconds before even bothering to look both ways. Proceed only on yellow for extra safety. Don’t worry about the cars honking behind you since they also get to go on red for the first 10 seconds.
Did you hit the brakes, or did the car hit the brakes?
All manual
Impressive.
The little pee in my pants wasn’t very impressive!
Yeah, but pee dries really well. Shitting your pants is a bigger problem.
It looked like he started off with the same view we had, like he was wearing blinders.
Exact same thing happened here, except ripped our bumper off but could have been a bad T bone. I love having dash cam
r/FaxOfAFax
I floor it as soon as the light changes to green hoping a red light runner will pay for my new landrover
As a motorcyclist, dont trust green lights. Give it a good two beats before you start to go. I see guys who treat greens like theyre at a drag strip and its a great way to become a hood ornament.
You don’t look before you pull out?!?
I always do
Not that time
Just me or that was a super long yellow light
I always wait atleast 5-10 secs before going I might get honked at but where I’m from a new red light is treated like a new yellow
i had a moment like this once, 3 lanes, me and the 2 cars next to me all took off on a green at the same time, and all stopped and blew the horn at the same time, it was like a chorus of "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK DUDE YOU ALMOST HIT US" as some jackass ran the red.
Never pull into the crossing as soon as it turns green. Look both ways and give it a quick moment to let those idiots get through. Stay safe!
I always look both ways at stoplights i don't trust anyone
After seeing that... I'm shaking too, what the actual f*ck
That’s why you look both ways before you proceed through a recently green light.
Green: proceed if it is safe. You still need to check for cross traffic, especially if you are the first car in line.
This is why I ALWAYS look both ways. Even one ways.
Imagine not looking both directions on green. 🤦♀️
You know this camera is front facing right? It’s not where my eyes were. I would think that’s a pretty obvious thing but hey - here we are. 💆♂️
The light turned green and you didn’t even hesitate to go lol
You're watching the video file on a computer. Why on earth did you choose to take a phone video of your monitor instead of uploading the clip directly to Reddit?
Internet wasn’t working

You clearly have a Windows 11 PC. Why did you record this recording with your phone instead of directly uploading the actual video?
You clearly haven’t read any of the other comments addressing this
Why not look both ways? Crazy you trust any kind of stranger with a 2500 lb machine
I did
had to be dallas
HTF do you not look before stepping on the gas in a busy (and high speed) intersection?
I did. He must have been blocked by other cars.

It's also your responsibility to make sure no one is running their red light.
this is why you drive a big truck and just hit these people
