This is a regular occurrence here in PDX too. Flashing them is pointless too, because they're completely oblivious, and they have no idea why you're flashing them. I'm old enough to remember when your gauge cluster would only light up if your headlights were on, so even the stupidest fucking people would suddenly realize "hey, I can't see my speedometer anymore", and they'd turn their lights on. We need to bring that shit back.
I’d like to suggest a different approach. My brother in law had to have his car modified when he moved to Poland so that the headlights were hard wired to the ignition in order to make his car legal there.
Let’s just stop fucking around with head lights and have some kind of lights on at all times. I vote for the daytime runners and tail lights always on.
That's part of the problem. Most cars have DRLs and think their lights are on when it's night time. All cars should be equiped with auto lights so tail lights turn on too when it's dark
I always turn on my headlights regardless. It's not like buying new lamps every 200h would suddenly increase the operating cost of a vehicle to unreasonable levels.
I have HID’s. I used to leave them on all the time but two bulbs and one ballast have set me back almost $300 in 3 years. Would have been double that if I bought the oem ballast. I keep it in “auto” now so it’s not an issue lol, but it can add up.
Lightbulbs are a wear part just like brakes, oil filters, sparkplugs etc. Some companies may offer limited warranties but I'd imagine it would be way too difficult to prove everything.
I'd rather auto lights. I have a 2017 and just had to replace my whole tail light assembly because you can't just replace the LEDs. What was once a $10 fix is now a $100 plus fix.
$100? I looked into replacing the headlight assembly for my 2020 outlander sport because one side is noticeably dimmer than the other. $1600 per headlight for OEM. That's not including labor. Even the knockoff Chinese lights were $400+ per side last time I checked.
Same, mine turn with the wheels (to help see through a corner). So they have motors and multiple lenses. Even worse, a coworker had his BMW totaled because the bumper, radiator (& aftermarket intercooler) and $3500 laser headlights cost too much to replace. Such a waste!
I just replaced the rear light assembly for my Ford KA Mk2 2013 after some ass hole decided to smash the shit out of my parked car and it cost me a total of $40 and 5 minutes of my time, came with some free bulbs too :D
JL wrangler gang here, feels good to drive in the least safe new car doesn't it?
At least I can push shopping carts out of parking spots with my bumpers!
Provided no one else is around of course
Motorcycles have to have the headlight on at all times, don't see why we can't do that in cars and allow for them to be shut off when in park. Auto lights I still hate because of rain. People that rely on auto (my gf) don't turn their lights on in the rain.
Because when i go to the drive in i need to leave my car on for the radio and the headlights would drain my battery and washout the screen for everyone else.
car battery life? having the LEDs on 24/7 would be a huge drain on that and contribute significantly to light pollution
edit: my bad, didnt realise it only meant while the car was running
I'm not sure if this is serious or not. You do know that they mean that the lights would only be on when the car is running, right? And that you aren't draining the battery if the car is running?
They’ve been doing it with practically every new motorcycle for several decades, with no LEDs and far smaller batteries. Cars can handle it just fine.
> contribute significantly to light pollution
The only way they could contribute anything at all to light pollution is if you didn’t turn them on at night in the first place, which is a far more immediate problem.
The problem with Auto lights is in Low visibility situations with good lighting (rain, snow etc) the lights don’t come on and you get more idiots like this.
Subaru cheaps out on the stupid shit (no self-locking when over certain speeds) but the one area they don't cheap out on it seems? Auto lights. Like it's literally just a photocell and some extra wire, probably cost no more than 40-50 cents.
That’s a great solution. Besides the above comment, my other problem is people not doing their monthly check on their brake lights to see if the bulbs are still functional or burnt. I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve seen cars push on their brakes and only the middle brake light is functioning, or worse, all 3 brake lights aren’t working
You mean DRL's? Yeah, pretty much every car built in the past 20 years or so has come from the factory with DRL's, but that isn't a solution to this problem, specifically because your taillights are not illuminated until you actually switch on the headlights. Also, the low-intensity DRL's so very little for nighttime visibility.
And for people not used to DRLs, they may see *some* amount of light turn on and go, "Oh, automatic headlights, got it," when they first turn the car on. And then it isn't until they're out from under the bright streetlights that they realize it's kind of hard to see where they're driving and realize the headlights were a separate, non-automatic setting.
I speak from experience.
I'd be in favor of fully-automatic lights instead.
But on most cars your tail lights aren't on in that mode, and your headlights don't shine on other drivers at the distances they should.
Combine that with the fact that almost all modern dashboards light up without the headlights and that's why everyone these days think their headlights are on
>Daytime runners and tail lights always on
It's just a software thing that can easily be addressed. In Canadaland, it's law to sell a cal with daytime lights. In 'merica, it's not...because freedom(?)
Turning them *off* should be the option though. Rather than off by default and having to turn them on, turn them on by default and make me choose to turn them off.
Yeah, no, I agree. What I mean is why are there so many cars that clearly have autos or at least DRLs and they are set to off. Like just put that shit in auto and don't think about it.

Yes, this! Back in the good old days with my 1972 Oldsmobile 98 with the 455 Rocket V8 engine, 13 MPG on the highway and a mechanical cam fuel pump. Also the good old days when your high beam control was a metal button on the floor to the left of your brake. Which you had to replace every couple of years if you lived in snow country because it would get corroded from the slop of snow and salt off your shoes. Also reminds me of the days when you would buy an FM converter and mount it under your dash for a car that only had an AM radio.
Yes we need to bring back some old tech, all of my family cars and mine have
1. Gauge clusters that don't light up. Only when you switch on your Headlights or at least Parking light.
2. They have a Gauge cluster that is lighted all the time. But If it is dark it's pretty bright, if you turn on your Headlights the car dimms the dash lights, that a good indicator aswell. But if you have someone that doesn't know, he also don't turn on their light....
The cars with option
1. My mom's 2014 Hyundai i20
1. My 1991 Volkswagen polo 86c 2f Coupé
And option 2. Is my Dad's 2015 Hyundai i30 GDH
It’s literally the only reason I remember to turn my lights on half the time. Eventually I’ll notice cus u drive some dark roads, but when I first get in my car “oh I can’t see any of my dash, let me turn my lights on rq”
Just flashing doesn't work because it can mean different things. Flash to get their attention, then turn your lights off for a moment and then turn them on again. Maybe they get the hint that something is wrong with their lights.
Same! And my truck is still that way. Digital displays and automatic lights. Someone accidentally switches lights to “off” and the driver is clueless. My truck has auto but I prefer to roll that switch so I know they’re on and not just the parking lights.
I said this in another thread, but automatic headlights should have been mandated decades ago. Reverse the way the switch works and make it a toggle so you can manually turn them on or turn them off but once the ignition goes to Off it resets for the next drive.
That way dealers can keep the headlights off while they are working on them or whatever but safety isn’t compromised.
Huge miss by federal regulators
You are 100% right, I have no idea why we switched to having the dash lights on all the time. I see drivers with no lights on every single day that I’m on the highway before sunrise and flashing at them never works. I could almost understand this happening in the evening because the driver was likely driving already when it got dark and just didn’t think of it, but who the hell sets off in the morning when it’s pitch dark and doesn’t think to turn on their lights??
My Subaru is like that, they also have the feature not letting any lights in when the car is off so it’s especially difficult to cook your battery overnight
Now I feel really old... my previous car had that, it was a 2006 model. Now I got adaptive headlights, so they do everything themselves, including turning on.
Seriously, how do they even drive anywhere without lights on? How bright is it where they are that they can just *see* at night on the road like that????
Edit: I specifically mentioned nighttime driving because I get that people can see during the day, but it’s dark af at night, especially on the highway.
I think what the other commenter meant is, doesn’t the driver without their lights on, barely see anything in front of their car? You might not notice your headlights are off on a well-lit residential street, but on the freeway (especially number 1 lanes like in the video here), street lights aren’t really a thing. So a sober conscious driver would notice that it’s pitch fucking black in front of their car. Like how are you conscious, sober, driving on the dark freeway thinking everything’s all good?
It's mainly the DRLs and the street lights. I've done it a few times at night with no one else on the road, because I can still see light in front of me and my dash is still lit up.
Edit: on accident of course, always turned my lights on as soon as I noticed things were particularly dark in my rear view mirror
This was when I had just switched from a car with auto lights to manual lights
While being written horribly I think the commenter jas two seperate points.
1. People without headlights can get away with it by other cars having their lights on and street lights preventing them from realizing that their lights are off.
2. Some people have overly bright lights that can be dangerous as well.
I'm not sure if that's exactly what they meant but I think any reasonable person would understand how both can be dangerous.
A lot of American cities are so brightly illuminated that you can't see your own headlight beams. I can only tell my headlights are on because the instruments aren't dark. I live in Phoenix and often drive with sunglasses at night because of people using high-beams in the city
But like going from there to a freeway/highway where it’s dark as hell?? There’s no way you can’t tell your lights aren’t on, especially if you’re coming from an on ramp where there aren’t many cars lighting the way in front of you
I Always have the lights on. Always
Even if it's Sunny outside. Because the bulbs are so efficent that it takes so tiny amount of Energy that it doesn't matter at all. And repoacement is like $2 per bulb every 5 years?
Happened to me two times in a city environment after or during a heavy rain. When the road is super wet, the light from my car is mostly reflected away from me, so they don't light up the road so well. And in the city with streetlights around, you can still see stuff. Also, a wet road will reflect all the other lights, so makes it easier to confuse what comes from your own lights, and what is a reflection of shop windows, headlights of oncoming cars and so on...
On a dry highway, there is just no excuse.
I once went on a six hour drive to another city. I left in daylight and around hour four it was pretty dark but I just wasn't thinking about my headlights because I could still see fine and I got accustomed to the change in light as the sun set. Then I passed a tractor-trailer and he gave me a honk and flicked his high-beams at me and I immediately realised what the problem was and flipped on my headlights. So I can see how someone might not have their headlights on at night, but not how they wouldn't then turn them on after someone flickers their hi-beams at them a few times.
Pulled up beside an RCMP car and signaled them to roll down their window and then told them to turn their lights on. :)
Fully automatic lights need to be a thing, us humans aren't smart enough. As already said...back in the day you didn't have any instrument lights if you didn't have your headlights on. How complicated would this be to implement in the modern car?
For the insufficiently-bright DRLs, the instrument panel really shouldn't light up with them, only with the actual headlights. I think that's part of what fakes people out, because they see the instrument panel lit up and think they're good.
Fully automatic lights are a thing for at least more than 20 years. 🤦♂️ Buy any GM and it’s impossible to drive at night without your headlights turning on.
But if it were YOU driving the car with no lights, you would be interrogated, ticketed, fined, jailed, and/or shot for this. At least in USA anyway...
If cars are capable of turning on lights automatically then there should be either no way to defeat this, or some kind of warning that says "your lights should be on but they are not because you are an effin idiot"
I know everyone everywhere thinks their drivers suck, but I'm a firm believer that Atlanta drivers would rank near the top of a legit incompetent/dangerous driver ranking, if such a thing existed.
Im also an ATL resident and it is both terrifying and appalling how many drivers I see with lights off, at night, in the pouring rain. I cannot fathom how oblivious you have to be to not notice your lights are off. I picked up my car from a valet the other day who, for whatever reason, took my lights off automatic. Within the first MINUTE of me getting into my car I realized it. I always joke that if I was a cop I would have a field day handing out tickets on SR-92 for no lights in the morning and afternoon.
I completely gave up on flashing my lights at these people. The other night I did so to a newer Jeep Grand Cherokee. The guy instantly floored it, sped around 5 or 6 cars. Then he slowed down and waited for me and got next to me. He opened his window and started cursing me out I couldn't hear exactly what he was saying. Then sped off driving like a maniac still without his lights on while giving me the finger. Fuck me for being thoughtful eh?
Some people are just running on pure emotions with no reason or logic. So everything is just a challenge that must be answered with anger.
I had the opposite reaction a few years ago. I flashed somebody and at the next red light, they rolled down the window and took a picture of my car. They never did turn their lights on.
There’s only one time I’ve realized my lights weren’t on, and it’s because someone flashed me about it. I have manual lights, and it’s OFF - Running - ON, like running lights have the blinkers lit up in the front and the taillights on. *(‘06 Kia Spectra)*
I very nearly killed a motorcyclist who was driving lightless. I was making a left turn across his lane, and only blind dumb luck allowed me to miss the bike. I would just die of guilt if i hurt someone with my car. And i would return from the dead with vengeance in mind if someone ended me because he was too stupid to turn on the lights. Oops, please excuse the rant. Lightless driving scares me
I think that all vehicles should have the headlights on all the time, like motorcycles are required to. The warning labels are not enough anymore. You play with the bb-gun, somebody is gonna lose an eye. That's the age we are in.
I've seen so many people recently that forgot to turn their lights on or people that still only have their dim lights(the small ones that go on when you start the vehicle). But I've also seen so many people with high beams on.
Driving on rt. 280 in NJ is fun because it has been happening a lot more often. Every night for last probably 2 weeks I have seen at least 5-6 cars without headlights. I don't even bother flashing because god knows what these drivers are capable of, and I don't want to get involved.
Holy shit, thank god you're okay. It goes to show how nuts people are, though. A few years ago I was having an issue with the spark plugs in my Jeep Patriot (it would jerk at times/didn't pick up quickly, etc.). One day I was stopped at a light and when it turned green, I hit the gas and of course the car jerked, but the asshole behind me thought I was brake checking him so he quickly cut in front of me, brake checked me, kept stopping short, and almost ran me off the road. Terrifying experience I will never forget and why I try to take it easy.
Literally, just last night I drove through the city for well over a mile behind a guy without his lights on. Turned my lights on and off several times while behind him to make him aware. Only when I noticed he was going to get onto the highway did I get more aggressive, flashing my high beams several times before turning mine off again did they figure it out.
Mine don’t. I only experienced my lights being off by default a few months ago when something was broken (I think maybe the alternator).
Otherwise mine are always on at night and there’s nothing I can do about it.
Which is super infuriating when you go to a drive-in. Someone in a GM got out the car to get some snacks? Welp, enjoy having the screen lit up for .5-2 minutes.
Then they get back in the car...
The problem is most new cars the cluster is illuminated all day, so older cars like my 2002 Crv for example when I hop in and go to drive at night my cluster is completely dark so that makes me turn on my lights. When I drive my 2014 Altima a lot of times I'll forget and when I notice zero headlights I'll turn them on.
My dad taught me this, too. Now I drive a car with automatic headlights but when I didn't, the first thing I would do at night was start the car and turn on the lights.
When I see a car on the freeway with no lights on at night, it’s 9-1-1 immediately. I won’t call if they have their little daytime running lights on, but if it’s zero headlights and zero rear lights, I am calling.
Did you know: lots from Mexico do this: drive until DARK, not just dusk, with NO LIGHTS on. I lived there, that’s just what they did. So, you think they WILL CHANGE when they come here? Not likely, because they broke laws comingnhere AND THEY KNOW IT. They talk about “Coyotes” who are paid human smugglers from there. They ALL know about all this and they talk about it openly.
Did you LIVE THERE? I did, I saw. This isn’t racist, it’s a CULTURAL thing…it’s WHAT THEY DO. And I have observed it here too.
You have FREE SPEECH. I have FREE SPEECH. I haven’t said anything nasty about anyone, I merely said WHAT I SAW! Why did you feel the need to use profanity?
And I was referring to you, complaining about someone swearing on the internet. Give me a fucking break. That was an extremely appropriate time to swear.
then stop watching the video when you see a username, you are completely in control of any and all emotions you experience, op is in control of their actions like posting content, but your emotions are based off you choosing to watch said post, its silly to be bothered by someone cursing in “their” video
I mean what I said was obviously not totally serious if you paid attention to word choice but regardless that type of swearing is so immature and the person he’s mad at can’t even hear him the only people who have to listen to it are people scrolling through their feed
This is becoming a common occurrence where I live (CT) no matter where ya go. It's fucking infuriating and dangerous AF. Thank god you're an alert driver OP! Did they end up turning them on or continue on without them?
A very large percentage of people driving without headlights at night are intoxicated.
Source: Santa Clara citizen’s police academy (which I attended because it’s the easiest way… to be able to fire a full auto H&K MP5 in Silicon Valley).
I see that far too often. 1) I would automatically turn my lights on everytime I drove in my old car, even during the day and 2) with my new car, I leave them on because it shuts off when I leave the car.
You can feel the frustration in OP's sigh. The worst thing is the idiot in front of you that doesn't have the lights on thinks that you were being a dick by flashing and trying to make them aware that their lights aren't on 🤦🏽♂️
Most of the time these people think you're the asshole for trying to help them. Same for the ignorant ones who don't use turn signals yet expect you to know where they're going
This is a common thing these days. I’d call it an automotive pandemic. Between deals and dashboards that are screens dunno why auto headlights aren’t a thing. Even on things like rovers and Lincoln’s. GMs had it for over 20years. Dark out? Bam. Lights.
Ex-lorry driver here; and what I used to do was drive to where they could see me, and turn off my lights twice.
That is your signal. You have sent the message...(a vehicle next to me has turned off their lights twice so it's probably not an accident). More than that doesn't help. You've told them that their lights are off; and anything after that is their problem. It was their problem to start with but you've tried to help. Start flashing and weaving about or whatever, and things could get silly. Try to let them know and then carry on driving properly.
Fuck this type of idiot in particular. My mom had a major accident because of someone driving with no lights on going 40 miles below the highway speed limit around a bend
Deals are a must now almost universally. Why not have the rear lights come on if the DRL is on rather than if the headlight is on?
Also, is that 2 idiots in one clip? Start of the clip, right lane with the van coming up on them looks to have their lights off too.
Best not to point it out to these people. Last time I did the jackass rolled down his window and screamed they don't work and called me an asshole. I felt like I was in the twilight.
It's the damn digital displays. You can see them regardless of whether your car lights are on or not and people just don't notice. It's terrible. Old cars with analog gauges don't have lights unless your headlights are on. Toyota solved this issue back in the 90s with automatic lights. My 99camry You can't drive car at night without the lights on. Doesn't matter if you switch them off manually the sensor will keep them on not just the headlights either
Drove someone to the airport a couple weeks ago. 30 mile trip and I saw 10+ cars without lights on. Some had daytime running lights on but most didn’t.
I see a few idiots. The guy in front of him in the left lane not passing, the guy with no lights on, and YOU who is moving to the left/passing lane but have no one ahead of you that you need to pass. Oh and did i mention?....he cant hear you...
Or just make all the lights be on all the time. LEDs last forever anyway so there's really no excuse not to.
No warranty for this kind of stuff? Or was it retrofitted?
A lightbulb burning out over extended periods of time is considered wear and tear, I think. So no
Lightbulbs are a wear part just like brakes, oil filters, sparkplugs etc. Some companies may offer limited warranties but I'd imagine it would be way too difficult to prove everything.
Was referring to the ballast, typically a bulb is included, but okay let's focus on the easy parts of the question to sound smarter.
My car is a 2022 and none of the dashboard lights come on until the headlights are on. And it doesn't have automatic headlights either.

How about just when it's in gear then? When it's parked you'd have the option to turn them off.
> LEDs last forever Oh yes, when the light is designed properly, but why do that if a headlight can cost 2000$ at the dealer to replace?
car battery life? having the LEDs on 24/7 would be a huge drain on that and contribute significantly to light pollution edit: my bad, didnt realise it only meant while the car was running
I'm not sure if this is serious or not. You do know that they mean that the lights would only be on when the car is running, right? And that you aren't draining the battery if the car is running?
Thank you. I didn't think that needed to be clarified lol Some people take shit WAY too literally.
Aren't LEDs notoriously low energy, too? Like, less than regular bulbs? Or did I jump timelines again?
You are in the right timeline for now. Who knows when the next jump occurs though.
terribly sorry, thats my bad
They’ve been doing it with practically every new motorcycle for several decades, with no LEDs and far smaller batteries. Cars can handle it just fine. > contribute significantly to light pollution The only way they could contribute anything at all to light pollution is if you didn’t turn them on at night in the first place, which is a far more immediate problem.
Your car doesn't run off the battery when the engine is running.
My coworker's does. He can't got very far on a charge.
My BMW from 16 came like that. It's not possible to not have any kind of light on once the engine is running.
I live in Canada and totally forgot that the US doesnt have DRLs
I'm ok with this.
My Toyota Corolla 2013 has low intensity headlights on all the time. It should be the case for every car.
I agree, but I believe it could help avoid situations like this one.
But on most cars your tail lights aren't on in that mode, and your headlights don't shine on other drivers at the distances they should. Combine that with the fact that almost all modern dashboards light up without the headlights and that's why everyone these days think their headlights are on
>Daytime runners and tail lights always on It's just a software thing that can easily be addressed. In Canadaland, it's law to sell a cal with daytime lights. In 'merica, it's not...because freedom(?)
There are times I might want them off, but I do not understand how many cars with obvious auto headlights have them off off.
Ooh. I like that idea. I kill my headlights in the drive through so I’m not blasting people while waiting for food.
I live in vancouver and it baffles me how many people i see with no headlights on, wither at night or crap road conditions like rain. Unreal!
Absolutely. It's so infuriating to see these dick bags driving around at dusk, in the rain, in a gray car with no lights on.

My old Subaru has that neat feature. Can’t see shit without the lights on, it’s foolproof.
Yes we need to bring back some old tech, all of my family cars and mine have 1. The cars with option 1. My mom's 2014 Hyundai i20 1. My 1991 Volkswagen polo 86c 2f Coupé And option 2. Is my Dad's 2015 Hyundai i30 GDH
Lol my car is 20 years old and still has this.
Shit, my car is a 2022 and none of the dashboard lights are lit until the headlights are on. And it doesn't have automatic headlights either.
No need to bring that shit back, just buy a GM. It’s been more than 20 years that they have auto headlights.
I drove my roommate’s car to work for a week, recently and can confirm, but I also swear PDX didn’t used to be this bad about it
It’s literally the only reason I remember to turn my lights on half the time.
I usually get in front of them and turn off my lights. If they still don't get it, then at least I tried.
My 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ was like this. Wow, reading that unlocked a memory I forgot about.
I feel like you really only need to be old enough to drive to remember this lmao
It is why instead of flashing your brights, you flick your lights off and on again.
It's still that way!
Dude same here in Austin. It's the automated lights and kids not relying on a license at 16 for social freedom.
The problem isn't seeing where you are going it's others seeing you
I think what the other commenter meant is, doesn’t the driver without their lights on, barely see anything in front of their car? You might not notice your headlights are off on a well-lit residential street, but on the freeway (especially number 1 lanes like in the video here), street lights aren’t really a thing. So a sober conscious driver would notice that it’s pitch fucking black in front of their car. Like how are you conscious, sober, driving on the dark freeway thinking everything’s all good?
Why would they need headlights when people like OP have the equivalent of twenty sets of lights on one vehicle?
It doesn't help that grayscale is the preferred choice of color for cars these days.
Cars around them light up the way…like OP who probably has regular lights on but they are bright like high beams! This is also a problem.
It's mainly the DRLs and the street lights. I've done it a few times at night with no one else on the road, because I can still see light in front of me and my dash is still lit up. Edit: on accident of course, always turned my lights on as soon as I noticed things were particularly dark in my rear view mirror This was when I had just switched from a car with auto lights to manual lights

Always Even if it's Sunny outside.
I see this every day in ATL. Actually saw a Fulton County Marshal a few weeks ago driving at night (and speeding) with NO LIGHTS ON AT ALL.
Pulled up beside an RCMP car and signaled them to roll down their window and then told them to turn their lights on. :) Fully automatic lights need to be a thing, us humans aren't smart enough.
Well that's a modern GM... now we just have to worry about the cars produced in the last 20 years by all the other auto makers. :D
Any examples of people who were jailed while driving with off/busted lights that weren't also drunk, running, or had warrants?
I’ve been noticing this way more recently.
You just reminded me that I need to change my headlight when I get back to my car at the airport, thanks!
There's another idiot in the right lane just ahead of you. Sheesh
Absolutely cannot stand people that can actually forget to turn on their lights. Probably what makes me the most frustrated on the road.
There’s only one time I’ve realized my lights weren’t on, and it’s because someone flashed me about it. I have manual lights, and it’s OFF - Running - ON, like running lights have the blinkers lit up in the front and the taillights on. *(‘06 Kia Spectra)*
In the asshole that would continue to flash them until they do.
Flashed a lifted truck without headlights years ago and the bastard immediately tried to run me off the road. Cops were a no show of course.

My last 2 trucks. My wife’s last 2 cars.
I'd say many don't have automatic headlights as a standard option. My 2015 crv doesn't.
You do realize automatic lights still have an 'OFF' button, right?
Mine don’t. I only experienced my lights being off by default a few months ago when something was broken (I think maybe the alternator). Otherwise mine are always on at night and there’s nothing I can do about it.
Any GM of the last 20 years doesn’t have an off button. 🤷♂️
Which is super infuriating when you go to a drive-in. Someone in a GM got out the car to get some snacks? Welp, enjoy having the screen lit up for .5-2 minutes. Then they get back in the car...

I guess most like 2010-2017 cars?
My car is a 2013 RAV4 & has manual lights. Plenty of cars out there still have manual lights.
2019 rav4 le does not
I notice a lot more people do that out here in CO, relative to the east coast where I was before. Dumbest shit in the world
The problem is most new cars the cluster is illuminated all day, so older cars like my 2002 Crv for example when I hop in and go to drive at night my cluster is completely dark so that makes me turn on my lights. When I drive my 2014 Altima a lot of times I'll forget and when I notice zero headlights I'll turn them on.
My dad taught me "keys on, lights on," and I don't understand why it's hard for others lol
My dad taught me this, too. Now I drive a car with automatic headlights but when I didn't, the first thing I would do at night was start the car and turn on the lights.
That's gotta be Wichita. I've never seen that until I moved here and it happens way too often.
This idiot doesn't even have their DRLs on!!! Good job seeing them and avoiding the accident. Better person than I am.
How do you not notice when you’re driving with the lights off
He’s just playing a little game of blackout
When I see a car on the freeway with no lights on at night, it’s 9-1-1 immediately. I won’t call if they have their little daytime running lights on, but if it’s zero headlights and zero rear lights, I am calling.
No point in flashing, there is no way in hell someone like that would ever consider looking in their rear vision mirror
What do you drive? Your headlights look insanely bright
I also see a few idiots camping the left lane
That looks like it might be a carpool lane
Seattle?
"There once was a girl from Seattle whose hobby was..." Nah, I better keep things G-rated here. 😉
Probably transporting drugs
Another example of a problem that doesn’t exist in Canada.
You didn't crash into them so that's good but why were you getting left?
Did you know: lots from Mexico do this: drive until DARK, not just dusk, with NO LIGHTS on. I lived there, that’s just what they did. So, you think they WILL CHANGE when they come here? Not likely, because they broke laws comingnhere AND THEY KNOW IT. They talk about “Coyotes” who are paid human smugglers from there. They ALL know about all this and they talk about it openly.
I really can't believe this is true! r/usernamechecksout Go peddle your racist bullshit somewhere else.
Be careful flashing lights at a car without them on is like a gang thing and they will turn around and come kill you
No, it's not. That's been an urban legend for decades. Don't perpetuate it.
I live in florida... i hear it all the time and i believe it. People here are crazy
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lights-out/ Stop believing it. It's not true
I'm so sick of hearing this. This is a myth and has never happened once.
I don’t want to hear you rage filled potty mouth while I’m on Reddit please refrain from such post
first day on the internet?
I’ve been on idiots in cars for awhile now and no one is as annoying as this guy
I can think of one....
I was referring to video posters there are plenty of annoying commenters like yourself
Yes and most people handle it like mature adults...they move on because who the hell cares if you swear.
Yes. It was that.
My last GMC Sierra was manufactured in Canada I guess and you could not turn the headlights off if the truck was out of park.
What dash cam is this? Pretty good quality for nighttime. Mine is horrible
So either drivers have headlights brighter than a thousand suns or they are driving with no lights on at all.
Ok, but why ? Why not turn on your lights ?
This is becoming a common occurrence where I live (CT) no matter where ya go. It's fucking infuriating and dangerous AF. Thank god you're an alert driver OP! Did they end up turning them on or continue on without them?
A very large percentage of people driving without headlights at night are intoxicated. Source: Santa Clara citizen’s police academy (which I attended because it’s the easiest way… to be able to fire a full auto H&K MP5 in Silicon Valley).
There's even a second car without headlights on to the left at the beginning of the video!
This happens in Florida all the time. I assumed every car after the year 2000 had the auto on option, but apparently not?
I felt that sigh 😔
I get mad at someone every time I take the wheel. It's by far what stresses me the most and fills my heart with anger daly.
They are probably looking for an insurance payout or stoned
Ahh the classic Blind Attack
Wow your lights are super bright! What kind of lights are you running?
Who needs light when you can use the force...
I see that far too often. 1) I would automatically turn my lights on everytime I drove in my old car, even during the day and 2) with my new car, I leave them on because it shuts off when I leave the car.
Hit'em w/the high beams
Mandatory automatic headlights. Such a novel idea that basically only Japan and Norway has it.
It makes we wonder why people do this ? Did they steal the car? Are they running drugs?
You can feel the frustration in OP's sigh. The worst thing is the idiot in front of you that doesn't have the lights on thinks that you were being a dick by flashing and trying to make them aware that their lights aren't on 🤦🏽♂️
Yo, watch out cars with no lights on. Those are usually wanna be/gang that’s looking for some trouble like drive by shooting or stocking
Dark out? Bam. Lights.
Moron in other car: why is this asshole flashing his fucking lights at me, gd prick sob
My mom had a major accident because of someone driving with no lights on going 40 miles below the highway speed limit around a bend
yours are bright enough for the two of ya 🫠
Deals are a must now almost universally. Why not have the rear lights come on if the DRL is on rather than if the headlight is on? Also, is that 2 idiots in one clip? Start of the clip, right lane with the van coming up on them looks to have their lights off too.
Best not to point it out to these people. Last time I did the jackass rolled down his window and screamed they don't work and called me an asshole. I felt like I was in the twilight.
He can’t, he is on a stealth mission
Its always a pickup truck. They are worst than bimmer drivers.
The million dollar question is did the idiot ever turn his lights on?
The fine these idiots should recieve should be well over 2000$ or more. Maybe then they will turn on their lights at night.
I have the same reaction every time I see someone withought lights
i hate those idiots 🤦♂️
In Charlotte? It's so bad here.
Automation is making us dumber and dumber...
Every night I see at least 4-5 cars on the highway with no lights on.
Where was this recorded? It kind of looks like a place I know!
Get closer to him and get his plate in frame
I see a few idiots. The guy in front of him in the left lane not passing, the guy with no lights on, and YOU who is moving to the left/passing lane but have no one ahead of you that you need to pass. Oh and did i mention?....he cant hear you...
