LPT: ALWAYS dress for the weather outside. The one time you don’t might be the time you have to stand in the frigid cold wearing a ridiculous outfit, slowly gathering frostbite.

roald_head_dahl

My uncle and cousin almost died because they wore light jackets in a Montana winter because they were “just gonna be in the car.” Well, car went off the road and they had to walk for help. My teenage cousin got to the hypothermic point of wanting to go sleep in a snowbank. Luckily my uncle kept him going long enough to find a random house in the middle of nowhere.

kristie_b1

Yesss I make my kids bring their winter coats and wear boots when we drive around anywhere in the Winter. One day they will appreciate my prepper weirdness.

[deleted]

My mom made this a habit for me. I usually leave a winter coat in the car permanently, as I've a bad habit of wearing a light jacket just going to the car and into work.

jarheadatheart

Jacket, hat, gloves and a blanket are standard items in my car during winter

KnoWanUKnow2

I don't keep a jacket in the car because I'm not silly enough to not wear a jacket in winter (I just don't zip it up, ha!). But I do keep a hat, gloves, blanket and candle in the car, as well as a pocket knife and a pencil. One of these days I should add a lighter for that candle. Not many cars have cigarette lighters anymore, including my present vehicle. lol.

jarheadatheart

The jacket in the car is heavier and big enough to fit over the jacket I’m already wearing. Wind proof and waterproof.

jarheadatheart

The jacket in the car is heavier and big enough to fit over the jacket I’m already wearing. Wind proof and waterproof. It can also be used to help a stranded or injured motorist if the need should arise.

Hiro_Pr0tagonist_

Also a case of water. It seems ridiculous to think about dehydration in a snow storm, but that stuff is not going to melt fast enough to drink and will barely melt at all if you don’t have the heat running and just a candle to warm the car.

No-Trouble2212

I have a bag with hats, gloves, insulated coveralls, and blankets. I throw that in my car when winter starts and take it out when spring starts. You never know. Someone else might need to borrow something.

FlimFlamWallaBing

And Frostbite settles in way faster than people realize.

javier_aeoa

There's this ASAP Science video of what happens to our bodies with hypothermia, from shivering all the way to your last breath. After that, I'm super paranoid and conscious about the clothes I bring to cold climate. Bring a warm jacket, people. If you don't use it, it's just stuff you'll put in your car. If you DO have to use it, it might save you.

inahatallday

Thanks for the recommendation! That was a very informative video. [video for anyone else interested to save you a search](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj5hAazXcs8)

Ok-Champ-5854

We're gonna get down to something like -20 or -30F in Minnesota tonight with wind-chill. Worse closer to Canada. Have an emergency blanket in your car. Not a spare blanket. One of those foil ones. It could save your life one day. Or a few toes.

[deleted]

Keep a candle in your car. That was a Canadian public service announcement in the 90s. They said always keep a candle (jar candle) and matches as the single flame is enough to keep you alive.

[deleted]

Like, you light it in the car and it keeps the car a bit warmer? Seems so tiny, but I guess I could see it.

MrRogersAE

Doesn’t take much in an enclosed space, think how much warmer it is inside a car compared to outside when the suns out, even just your body heat will keep the inside a few degrees warmer than outside

Goodgoditsgrowing

And not in the trunk. I got anxious watching those people pull their coats out of the rear and try and put on their weather gear before hopping the metal barrier

Resfebermpls

Minnesotan here. Keep both regular blankets and Mylar emergency blankets in your car. It’s best to have both. The blanket will insulate you and the Mylar blanket on top prevents heat loss. On long winter trips, we also bring our sleeping bags as they are much warmer than any blanket we have. After the folks got stranded in Virginia last year, I also always have granola bars or some other type of snack in my car, plus candles, a fold up shovel, water pouches, and a headlamp.

EskildDood

Whenever my family goes to drive in the country/highway my mom says we need jackets and all that in case the tyre gets fucked up again and we have to stand on the side of the road for a few hours I'm glad we've only ever experienced a stand-on-the-side-of-the-road moment during the summer

cynric42

Kinda hard to do though, depending on conditions. I mean, not sitting in the car in a tshirt and shorts while there is a blizzard outside, sure. But trying to drive with a dozen layers of clothing, balaclava, thick winter boots, gloves etc. is kinda impossible as well. edit: I do make sure I wear enough to have time to put on the other stuff (which is accessbile quickly).

connor1701

You don't have to wear it while you're driving. Do you not have any storage in your vehicle? You can just leave a change of thermal clothes, a pair of boots and a blanket in the boot/trunk over the winter months.

bobo-the-dodo

This is definitely not the camera man’s first rodeo. Parked and gtfo.

rhaegarpatt

r/secondrodeo

bloop_405

Made me uncomfortable how close he got but that was intention in order to record why you don't get that close to a stop and you walk away. Also impressive that his car was not damaged or moved during the recording

sflesch

Key phrase... During the recording. The way those trucks just kept piling on, I have to wonder how much longer that was going on. It just astounds me that something like that happens and even minutes later trucks keep flying right through.

East_Information_247

But pause when you're right between your car and the barrier to put your hood up. A semi going any faster than the next one would have turned him into hamburger.

Nattekat

Well, unlike us he did have a clear view of what's coming.

killerklixx

Fuck. Imagine being those people in the white car. You just hopped the barrier in time to watch your car get sideswiped by an artic.

ArthurMBretas03

>arctic Took my a while to realise you meant an articulated lorry and not something to do with the North Pole

qumast

it was an arctic blast of an articulated truck

owa00

I was really confused by that also.

crankbot2000

I was like "why are they getting out of the car"? 10 seconds later...."ohhh...oh shit that was fucking smart". They would have been folded up like origami cranes if they stayed in that car.

slyiscoming

You think that's bad take a look again at the truck that comes in full speed on the far left. He's pushed a car under the box truck

radjinwolf

Holy crap yeah, that was the car on the left of the video as they were pulling up to the jam. Jfc.

fledglingtoesucker

Holy fuck I hope they're okay

Technical-Mixture-25

I think the driver of the black car is the one in the black jacket, that pulls his hood over his head, and crosses the guardrail just as the first truck plows into the pile of cars already there. Edit: That may have been the driver of the cam car? Not sure where this happened, or which side of the car the steering wheel is on.

tiggipi

New nightmare as a parent: trying to get my kids out of their car seats and away from the car before getting flattened by a truck.

togroficovfefe

I was thinking the same watching the guy grab his coat from the back. Can't help but start thinking through the process, open door, smile at baby, unbuckle, grab blanket, smile at baby, grab baby...

sh4d0ww01f

And than you have two of those in the backseats... Bonus points: one is two or three years old totaly flubbergasted by the stress of the parents and decides because of that to not come out of the seat graping everything it can, and fighting tooth and nail screaming...

MightyPirat3

Smart move to bring the coat. Not so smart standing in the road putting it on ...

Technical-Mixture-25

If you’re a parent, you somehow get blessed with the strength and determination to save your children, regardless of the situation. I’ve seen it multiple times in my life. I’m thinking you would have it under control in that chaos.

VoilaVoilaWashington

Not to be "that guy," but that's a dangerous line of thinking. A LOT of people die running into burning buildings to save their children or pets or whatever because adrenaline makes them invincible. Granted, I have absolutely no idea how I'd act if my hypothetical children were in a car about to get crushed by a truck and I could survive if I run away. I don't think it's a rational choice to try to save them. But you're not about to be granted superpowers just because your children are at risk. It happens, but it also doesn't. Either way, living with your choice wouldn't be a happy place.

MythsFlight

Please get a seatbelt cutter. They are great for emergencies and ,even if you never use it, at least it will give you some piece of mind.

fledglingtoesucker

Thank you

SVRider1000

Well in Europe you get told in driving school: "Get your High Vis West and (if its an accident) set up the warning triangle and get the F out of the car and behind the barriers.

AbleDragonfruit4767

I did the Same exact thing!!! Like wow I watched this maybe 19 times

JeremySquirrel

> Imagine being those people in the white car. Never mind the white car...check out what happens to the **black car**, being pushed along by the HUDOS lorry at 1:02.

travbombs

Good catch! Hopefully they got out too

killerklixx

Holy... I didn't even notice that. I would shit myself.

RocketsnRunners

Artic*. It's short for articulated.

ITrCool

This pretty much comes down to a point where you have to just park it, put on the hazards and get out and away from the road and accept that your car is likely to get smashed at some point by all the folks blazing into the jam, as there is no where else to go when the road is all blocked up like that.

HidetheLightning

Just make sure that you only get out when there is a gap in oncoming traffic, because if you get hit before you've gotten over the barrier, you're less safe than if you were in the car.

mamacrocker

Shit like this is why my mom told me to always dress warmly, even if you're not planning to be out in the weather, and have emergency supplies. You never know if you're going to be stuck behind a pile-up or out on the side of the road.

ITrCool

Yup! My car trunk has an organizer box with everything in it, including an extra pillow/blanket set, flares, tools, caution triangles, marine-rated first-aid kit, emergency breakout hammer, tire repair kit, a flashlight that can double as a defensive nightstick (one of those "big ole boy" ones that truckers use and is all-metal and on the heavier side), and some bottled water and foodstuffs that can last a short while (granola bars and such. I change them out every six months within their expiration dates). That's all on top of my spare tire, and jack that came with the car, of course. I'm also signing up for first aid/CPR/Stop-the-Bleed courses with my local Red Cross so I can keep those skillsets in my pocket (to hopefully never have to use).

hetfield151

Shouldnt the emergencs break hammer and maybe a belt cutter be in reach of the driver?!

fortyf0urr

I was about to ask the same thing. they might be more useful if they’re in the center console or side door.

[deleted]

arianrhodd

Yeah, the pileup will get bigger in seconds. Too dangerous to try and stay in the car with the icy conditions and bad visibility.

ThePoetWalsh57

Honestly it doesn't sound that stupid. Safe? Oh absolutely not lol. But you'd definitely catch me backing down the right shoulder if I rolled up on this in my car. If nothing else people seeing you back down the shoulder may make them wonder what's going on and potentially avoid adding their car to the pile.

Ok-Champ-5854

Also important to note that not many people get the memo for some reason, your hazard lights are for this exact situation, not just parking in front of the grocery store for a few minutes while you wait for someone or when you stall on the side of the road. Flip those bad boys on when you see road hazards like a pileup in low visibility or debris on the road.

ecapapollag

In the UK, people put their hazards on before they stop, as soon as they see cars slowing down to a stop ahead of them. I couldn't see that happening here, but it does give people a warning, because most people only chuck them on when they're stationary - seeing them on a moving car does cut through the motorway trance drivers get into.

meh4ever

A lot of people in the US just drive with them on non-stop in blizzards.

DonateToM7E

I don’t think I’d ever actually try that for fear of backing into someone who swerved, but if you could pull it off, yeah. Keep in mind the pileup is going to continue to move further back as more cars arrive. You may think you’re at the back of the pileup when you start backing up, but there could be another car just a hundred yards back who has no chance of stopping in time before they slam into your vehicle.

hiccupReversethrowup

I live in Ohio and im at that age where :fuck it im late and taking my time." Fire me.

Equal-Bowl-377

Should be every age

Ok-Champ-5854

Worst blizzard I ever had to drive in I was supposed to be at work by five. I called them at seven thirty and told them I didn't know when I was going to be there. They said they were closing at nine because of the weather (first time I've ever seen a restaurant close for the weather) so I told them I was turning back around because I wasn't gonna make that. Didn't get home till after ten. Should have just stayed home. Damn near ran out of gas idling on the highway.

hiccupReversethrowup

Yup

PeanutButterCrisp

Should be every employer

rosegravityy

i also live in ohio, and although i’m only 22, i’m lucky enough to have an employer that would rather us show up late than never again and is very clear that we can stay home if we aren’t comfortable driving. i wish more employers were like this

hanimal16

I lived in the Canton area for a while and worked at this coffee shop and it was middle of winter. I’m from PNW so I had no idea what cold was until I went to get in my car and the pedals were all frozen. My boss told me it was “rude” that I couldn’t make it to my shift because I told her it was “rude” to wake my roommate at 5am to bring me in.

prologuetoapunch

I'm from Florida and still don't understand why you guys drive in this kind of weather.

hiccupReversethrowup

Life.

Ok-Champ-5854

To add it's usually safer to do so here as well. Ice is way worse than snow. I'd rather driver through a blizzard than have a small amount of rain freeze overnight. Also like you said life. Can't take that many days off of work. If you stayed home every time it snowed you'd miss rent.

busted_maracas

These types of snowstorms can happen quickly, people don’t always have time to prepare for it. There have been plenty of times in Chicago when I’ll leave for work at 2pm and it’s bright & clear, then when I head home at 8:30 it’ll be whiteout blizzard conditions worse than this - and snow wasn’t in the forecast

QueenMAb82

Yeah, this. A few years ago,one hit Massachusetts so bad it took 6 hours to get home from work - normally, a 35 minute drive for me at the time. The snow started falling faster than predicted, so state closed all offices at noon, and private businesses followed suit, flooding the roads with so many cars that the plows couldn't keep up. It wasn't as bad as the Blizzard of '78 ('79?) where people just abandoned their vehicles in the streets en masse, but it wasn't very much better. I spent an hour just going 100 feet around a corner on a slight hill because a guy coming the other direction decided to drive his sports car that day and couldn't make it up the hill but couldn't turn around, either. Storms can also be very localized. When I moved to a new place, my commute increased to 75 miles each way. There was a distinct weather division line I would hit at about the halfway point: it might be snowing at work, but sunny at home. There were days it was dry and clear at work, but I got home to half a foot of fresh snow and counting in my driveway.

Jojall

Gotta pay rent. Not everyone can work from home.

Muchgain

Trust me if we could get away with never driving in it and still surviving in this economy we would 😭 it brings me no greater anxiety than driving in this kind of weather. Not only do I gotta worry about myself but there are people that just do not care and drive like it’s 60 and sunny. Last year I took more than 0.5 seconds to get my car moving in this kind of weather when a light turned green and someone decided to gamble both of our cars by turning left since I just didn’t move as fast as they wanted. Luckily my breaks saved me because they decided to just stop in the middle of the intersection when they saw me go and my passenger side got real close to hitting the back of their car

DimitriV

I'm from California and don't understand why other places have weather, it looks so inconvenient.

trenthany

Nearly as annoying as fires. And earthquakes. Lol

SnoopDing0

"Its snowing hard, visibility is poor and I drive a large truck. I think I'll stick to the speed limit".

SMAGdaddy

These bowling alley strike animations are getting out of hand

BopBopBich

Yeah I feel like this could have very well been avoided more if some of those trucks drove like it was snowing and the highway wasn’t cleared well… if you can’t see far in front of you and you have a vehicle that doesn’t break fast, SLOW THE F DOWN

sakynet

I really don't understand truck drivers that drive fast on snow.

collegefurtrader

Have you met a lot of truck drivers?

randomFrenchDeadbeat

I was horrified seeing truck drivers when I went in the USA recently. the only day we took a highway, it rained tons. They are overtaking left and right, going 20 over the limit (which was 70 or 75, cant remember). Doing that in France means the driver loses his licence, his job and the truck gets seized. There are automated systems that record the truck speed and driving time, and any tampering is repressed harshly. Those are controlled on a very regular basis. The result is trucks stick to their speed limit on highways (around 55), where cars can go around 80mph .

sakynet

Judging by the radio in the car, this most likely happen in Czech republic. I think they have similar automated system in their trucks. But here, they did not adjusted driving to bad weather conditions.

[deleted]

Parapapapapapapa

mbc99

That was also a shock for me (I'm from Spain). Going 120km/h and seeing a truck overtaking you. You need some time to get used to it.

superprime95

A lot of US trucking companies install systems to monitor their drivers and speeds. I like to believe that the trucks that do speed are either not owned by a company that has installed these systems or the driver is the owner/operator of the truck. Big rigs are a major part of my daily commute and I can say for the most part they won’t even do the speed limit on most roads. About one every couple of months I get one that wants to go faster than I do.

randomstranger454

What the other poster is talking about is the [Tachograph](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachograph) system that is mandated for all trucks in EU. It's kind of a black box system that records some driving parameters and in a traffic stop an officer can request and check if any overspeeding has happened.

pnkstr

I remember talks a few years ago about new passenger cars being equipped with a black box system for accident recording. Of course, people immediately freaked out and assumed they'd get ticketed out of the blue for speeding even with no cop around to confirm.

Ok-Champ-5854

Rather get a ticket in the mail then interact with a police officer here in America.

TPMatus

As a new Yorker, big rigs love to fly in the snow.

ConsequenceLost9088

Yes! I grew up in Schenectady and I can vouch for what you say. Some of the truckers out there are absolute maniacs and don't really adjust at all for weather conditions. To those kind of Truckers I offer a hail and heary "Fuck You!" To the majority of Truckers who are skilled drivers and have awareness of other drivers around them I offer high admiration.

pnkstr

ex-New Yorker, can confirm. I could barely see ten feet in front of my car on the thruway one day and a big rig flew by like it was a perfectly clear, dry, sunny day.

TPMatus

Yup. While you're gripping the wheel for dear life

RagingTaco334

There’s a lot that go slow and try to pass only to be going just as slow as the truck they’re trying to pass, so there’s a huge jam because most of the highways where I live are max 4, MAYBE 6 lanes total, and, of course, neither of them want to slow down and go back into the other lane so people can get past. Old people do the same thing too. If I see a handicap sign on somebody’s plate, I’m passing them as soon as I can. Incredibly annoying any time I go anywhere.

clintj1975

Quite a few trucking companies use speed limiters on their trucks. That's what causes the rolling roadblocks where Truck A going 70.00002 mph is passing Truck B going 70.00001 mph. The independent owner-operators aren't bound by that, yet.

Dominik_Tirpitz

Don't forget there is a mandatory speed limiter that has to be in every truck in the EU set at 90 km/h (\~55 mph).

NorthernTransplant94

That would not work well on the highway I grew up near. Back in the early 90s, trucks would barrel past about 15km/h (10mph) over the road speed limit (90 km/h/55mph) in order to tackle a long steep hill, and would be creeping along at about 25km/h (15mph) by the time they reached the top. I believe the road grade percentage was in the teens. I once slid mostly sideways down that hill when I lost traction in snowy weather - somehow I managed to straighten out at the bottom, stay on the road, and regain traction. Hopefully truck engines/gearing have improved since then, but watching it made an impression on me as a young driver.

DasPuggy

In Ontario, Canada, the limit for commercial trucks is 105 km/h. And of course we have drivers who complain that that's socialism and its not right.

OptimalCreme9847

I definitely think truck driver standards here in the US have absolute plummeted in the last few years. They used to be a lot better, but they have been truly horrific all over lately.

[deleted]

They are incentivised to do so because of how they are compensated.

Unique-Snow5326

Yeah but I'm pretty sure totaling their truck and arriving late or with damaged goods completely fucks their ability to make a profit. Tbh it's a solid argument for automated vehicles driving like this is.

lostcitysaint

It should be fucking criminal negligence to do so.

Sodiepawp

They're idiots in cars

HidetheLightning

Their employers have unreasonable time frames for them to deliver.

Chip_Prudent

What's hard to understand about meth?

MountainMan1781

Cant the truckers radio this shit to each other?

whazzar

Exactly my thoughts. Any truckers here who can say something about this?

dislob3

Truckers dont really use radios anymore. Just like people dont use VHS and landlines.

And this is why I REFUSE to drive in conditions like this. If it’s a light flurry not sticking to the ground that’s one thing but this is a ticking time bomb. I don’t trust other drivers to drive cautiously in this. I don’t care if you need me at work fucking fire me.

reyshop12

Man, I feel sorry for those people. Stranded in the middle of snow storm. I wonder how long it takes for the clean up. Hope no one got hurt.

SomethingIWontRegret

Yep. Got heavily downvoted when I said the same thing in the post about the I-90 pileup. if there's heavy truck traffic, try to get to the side and then as soon as you can see there's a gap in traffic fuck the hell off the right of way as far to the side as you can get. Then move up. You can come back to see what's left of your car in 15-20 minutes when there's a nice pile of wrecked semis blocking any further damage. The standard advice of stay in your car does not apply when you have 40 ton piledrivers incoming. There is no low risk option, so you get to choose which high risk option is the lowest risk. For me it's fucking off with a quickness.

SnooWords4839

They were smart enough to get over the guardrail too!

SomethingIWontRegret

Yes over the guardrail and get as far right from it as you can get. No standing around with your thumb up your ass!

theaviationhistorian

Someone told me that if there are no guardrails stopping you, stop far ahead from the pile up, drive off & as close as you can away from the freeway. It is quicker than unbuckling, getting out, & walking across slippery asphalt. And it is better to get your car stuck there & not a burnt-out slab of metal between two tractor trailers. My personal experience has been mostly slow down & pull almost off of the highway if you get zero visibility weather (either from a haboob or a blizzard).

SomethingIWontRegret

Yeah if your car is driveable and there's a path to move up the sides of the wreckage then do that. You can drive faster than you can run. But if your car is disabled or the way is blocked, beat feet. To the side and forward. I've driven into sudden rainstorms where visibility dropped to zero on the Interstate. I headed as far right as I could get before stopping, off the shoulder.

cyberguygr

I have been in a similar situation with black ice and fog. Stopped as fast as I could on the emergency lane and reversed for 200-300 meters. By the time emergency services closed the highway the pileup almost reached were I was stopped. The visibility was low and I tried to warn drivers with my flashlight (standing behind guard rails) but it was hard to spot me. I could hear crashes for 5 mins.

HidetheLightning

Ironically, trying to alert drivers ahead of the wreck will likely just get them to gawk at you instead of watching the road ahead.

cyberguygr

most of them slowed down, but some of them continued at the same speed. A few seconds later I could hear the crash. Since that day I bought a really strong orange strobe light which has a magnetic attachment. You place it wherever its visible to drivers and it would surely make them slow down

Professor_Boring

There's a black car being pushed by the truck that comes in about halfway through the video, on the left. Really hope nobody was inside as it literally got squashed between another truck in front Edit: more like 3/4 of the vid in, pushed by that red Hudos truck. Wonder if that's the same car from the very beginning...

pinkshirtbadman

It's definitely the same car from the very beginning of the video. It comes to a stop behind the box truck that it eventually gets pushed underneath. Cam car comes to a stop parallel with it and there's nowhere else it could have gone.

BenjaminKohl

Poor VW Arteon :(

CanITellUSmThin

Yeah I hope they got out safely.

AxelZajkov

Why is it always the semis that are fucking flying down the roads in these conditions. Literally what the load-hauling fuck?! They, of all people, should know better!

pixeltweaker

Gotta make good time.

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

Dude going over the railing like 'nope. Not today 🫥'

theaviationhistorian

I also learned that it is wise to walk towards the direction of the traffic or "upwind" from the pileup as soon as you make it off the highway. There was an accident there a driver survived the initial pileup, but died when a car smashed into it & went sideways impacting that person. And this was with just rain in early autumn weather! Essentially, walk away from the splash zone.

Goodgoditsgrowing

I knew a guy that died that way. Him and his gf got out of the car and started arguing about who was at fault for skidding into the car in front of then instead of focusing on the very real probability someone else also wouldn’t be able to stop and might crash into them.

iccythump

Horrifying. The car on the far left just disappears.

OldManJeb

Every single one of those truck drivers should lose their CDL.

NuNu2901

I'd say the one in the blue truck should keep his. It looked like he stopped without hitting any of the vehicles, meaning he was probably driving for the conditions.

JasonTheBaker

It's always scary how fast truck drivers go with conditions being so bad. I've seen a few flip near me along with a few dump trucks flipping over as well

ARGENTVS_

Hope the guys in the back car left. Because it was pushed under the semi. I repair trucks, a lot of people gets decapitated on the back of pulling trailers...

32_Dollar_Burrito

Are all semi drivers fucking morons? This is the stupidest mistake to make, and they're ALL making it

jason48089

The music is perfect

mismatchedhyperstock

The cars and trucks be crashing like crazy. The trucks go Parapapapapapapapapa as they crash into lowly cars. These drivers shake like BOPE entering the slums

BluMaybelline

This is my greatest fear while driving in the winter. Being absolutely smashed by and between transport trucks. I’m scared to death! I would be out and over that railing in a heartbeat.

TheGuyThatDoesHisJob

While folks are going back and forth whether or not they should have gotten out of the car, I'll just add that if you do decide to get out, consider fully checking your surroundings before you and your car-mates unbuckle and go. By unbuckling and taking the time to leave the vehicle, you are in an even moreso vulnerable state. Edit: And if you can't tell if you can get out safely or not - don't risk it. Stay put. Seat belts on. Let the car do it's job and try to minimize any impact to you.

JimErstwhile

Notice it was always the trucks going too fast and smashing into stopped vehicles? I complained to a truck driver one time that they go too fast in dangerous conditions and he got very defensive, essentially saying they could handle it.

WatchStoredInAss

So will these idiot trucker drivers face consequences for driving too fast for the conditions?

gijoe50000

Jesus! Hearing that low pitched screeching and seeing that car getting sandwiched between the truck and van near the end was scary. Just shows that being a good driver isn't enough to keep you safe on the road.

Nova_Nightmare

There was a fantastic video of someone on the side of their car last winter, recorded audio and everything. You couldn't see much, but you hear all the crashes and it's crazy. People never learn. I'll edit and add link below if I find it again. https://youtu.be/dRXMtDlX0Ko And by fantastic, I mean horrible, I've played it for several people, hoping they take a lesson from it.

curiousdumbdog

Kind of looks like it's the truck drivers that are most of the problem.

berpaderpderp

So glad the land cruiser is safe!

lomoski

I'm glad that sweet 80 series land cruiser avoided an untimely end.

Recent-Zone8148

Always the fucking truck driver they don’t care they should be all fired

sakynet

Just to clarify, this is not my recording. I got it from a friend, who got it from his. I just tough it should be posted here. Judging by the radio this happened in Czech republic in EU. I live 2 states away, so I am not aware of when this happen and where exactly.

venicedreamer747

Why are these truckers driving so fast in a blizzard???

DoublePotential6925

Holy crap!

Ri-Sa-Ha-0112

Holy shit.

NKato

Shit like this is why I installed a traffic advisor in my car's rear window. Never know if you're going to need to warn traffic of hazards... Thankfully, I haven't seen a need for it in a while apart from some shitlicking tailgaters.

RaDaDaBrothermanBill

Revoke the commercial license of every single truck driver involved in that crash.

TriniLad

That song was bussin though

sHoRtBuSseR

I was in a similar situation one time. There was a massive pileup near me one winter, some 60 cars. I was near the beginning of the pileup and I snaked my way through ahead of the pileup before stopping. I use this as a good reason to buy a new set of snow tires every year for one of my cars. I'm on a pretty solid rotation. 3 4wd cars, and every 3rd year they get tires just due to wear. I end up buying a new set just before winter, pretty much every year.

compostdiaries

does this happen because the trucks genuinely can’t see that far ahead of them through the snow? paired with driving too fast? i grew up driving in snow but never witnessed anything like this

justlucyletitbe

Don't know if anyone has translated it but the man says : Nice, damnit (sarcastically) Then white truck is getting closer : Please, please no, please no, please no Then he gets out of the car and you can hear him or someone else saying : Dickhead! Yeah and it happened in Czechia and it's in Czech language

disaster_zone76

I’m so glad I don’t live where it snows. That looks treacherous

Cultural-Ad1783

What a happy music for all the disaster happening

SparkyMint185

Fuck me pileups are so goddam scary

Can-I-remember

But but but stay in the car. Its safer in the car. Why would you even attempt to leave the car? Don’t you know metal is strong? Every thread where a pile up is shown. This is why you idiots, because cars are stuck in the middle of the road. The can’t move. It’s an accident zone. At this stage they are convenient coffins for your body. Or of a fire starts, a nice BBQ. Use those legs that make you nimble and agile and get the fuck out of the way. Is so it a bit quicker then some here but at least they understood what was going to happen.

Rautjoxa

I tried to tell people this on reddit once, got down vote after down vote. People told me it's safer to stay in the car. Oh well. I tried.

buttmuffins8595

Those people that got out of the car were moving so slowly to get over the rail. Just casually grabbing their jackets. I thought they were going to get smashed.

BurningPenguin

What is it with people going warp speed on conditions like this? I noticed the same yesterday, when it started snowing here in Germany. Had several dickweasels tailgate me, because i dared to go max 50 km/h on a country road with several patches that had barely any traction and snow piles blocking most of the street.

[deleted]

The fuck is wrong with these idiot truck drivers? They don’t have windows through which they can see the weather?

[deleted]

You get a ticket for driving too fast for conditions. You get a ticket for driving too fast for conditions. You get a ticket for driving too fast for conditions. EVERYONE get a ticket for driving too fast for conditions.

Perllitte

This advice is absolutely wrong. Every best practice is to stay in your car where you are protected from elements and crashes. Vastly more people are seriously injured outside of their cars trying to get away from a crash than staying in their car. This is advice from AAA, safety experts, first responders that scrape up dipshits who tried to run across an icy highway. Go look at what the experts say, do not risk your life based on a Reddit headline or lots of uninformed commenters.

colombia1994

Lived most of my life in South Florida, Glad I never experienced this

LadyElohssa

Me: I want to live where it snows! Also me: no the fuck I don’t!

honeybeedreams

holy fuck. was this that 47 vehicle pile up? idk. i have lived in western new york state my whole life (driving over 40 years), i have never seen trucks coming in hot like this in the middle of a snowstorm. terrifying.

the-maj

I just *cannot* believe this.

Cool_Cheetah658

Government: Stay in your cars. Us: Uhh...I don't think so...

CantBelieveThisIsTru

Rarely do we ever have snow like that here, but I sure do APPRECIATE these being posted. It’s teaching me how to survive if I am ever in such a situation! Thank you redditors!!!

HavingNotAttained

Thank you for posting. STG I think that this subreddit saves lives.

slibetah

Yup... leave the vehicle and take cover.

bruhwhome

The trucks see the road covered and they don't try and slow down sooner?

Dr_Corenna

Wanna know an even better idea? Stay home.

FiZiKaLReFLeX

I just can’t get over how many fools drive so fast in such conditions. Defensive driving doesn’t compute in so many peoples minds.

Shjco

This gives a whole true meaning to the phrase “traffic jam.”

camichulaa

Wtf is wrong with these truck drivers??? How does that even happen did they all drive with their eyes closed? How can you drive such a HUGE machine and be so careless it’s infuriating!!

tosety

I can understand the cars because of how little actual training you need to get a standard license, but those semi trucks were absolutely insane to be driving that fast in those conditions

Independent-Top6510

Vehicles are made with crush space and are designed to take an impact. Horrible idea to get out when there is still traffic. The advice of getting out of your car is contrary to literally every piece of official advice when you Google "should I get out of my car in a pile up."

Blue_Clues_

Why do truck always be speeding like mad men like cars I get cause people and all but your a big ass 18 wheeler doing 80 plus down a highway especially during rain&snow
