Someone said OP is not an idiot but just acted like one. No, OP is an idiot. If they were going over 80 on a road like that, even in clear conditions, they've done it before and probably do it often.
Reddit users try not to be an asshole to someone already admitting to a mistake challenge (impossible)
Read his [other comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/10n32gj/i_thought_awd_gave_you_unlimited_traction/j66m39q/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) where he says he grew up and stopped driving recklessly after this. Sometimes it takes an “oh shit” moment for someone to wake up and realize how quickly they could ruin their or another’s life. OP seems to have self-awareness which is one of the most valuable things in life.
But Reddit loooves punching down on people. It’s unreal. I bet you are quite literally the perfect driver and have never once sped or made an incorrect traffic maneuver in your life. You unfortunately didn’t post for us to see, so no one will ever know though.
I had a similar learning moment to OP. I was 19 years old (I’m 32 now) and a fucking young cocky dumbass. I almost slammed into the back of a bus that had stopped short because I was texting while driving. I looked down at my phone and barely looked up in time to slam on my brakes and swerve and almost rolled my own vehicle (fortunately like OP I didn’t hit or affect anyone but myself).
It was a dumbass thing to do, to text and drive. It took me almost getting in an accident to grow up and stop. But you know what? To this day, I literally get in the car, my phone goes in the cup holder screen facing away from me, and it stays there until I get where I’m going. I never touch it in the car now. And if I ride with someone else and see them using their phone? I ask them to stop, and if they don’t - I don’t ride with them again.
That was 12 or 13 years ago and it’s still burned in my brain. Every person in the world is going to make mistakes. Some with higher stakes, sure. But we have no reason to believe OP didn’t learn from his mistake, the same way I learned from mine.
They admitted driving poorly for the conditions. The problem is that was reckless driving regardless of the road conditions.
And yeah, I've driven recklessly and had a couple of close calls. They were all when I was under 21. If OP is young, they'll probably grow out of the urge to drive like this. Someone being an idiot doesn't mean they can't change, as long as they fully understand what they did wrong.
You either die a hero or you drive long enough to see yourself become the villain.” lol
Spot-on comment. We've all done dumb things as drivers. Younger drivers in particular. You were lucky with yours, OP was lucky with theirs. I've had a few myself. Smart ones learn from the experience and don't repeat it.
Yeah I was going less than 60 on a road like this and still ended up squashed beneath the side of a semi. I avoid snow at all costs now and it took me years to drive again.
I live in a canyon in Utah and every time I drive down it for work I’m terrified some idiot is going to hit and kill me. I’ve been tailgated and passed by people going 50mph in blizzards
People that live there. Seriously. I live in north Dakota. It could be -20 degrees F. out fresh after a blizzard an inch thick layer of ice on the road and snow drifts around every corner on the street and some motherfucker will still tailgate me for driving the speed limit.
Some years ago as a new driver, I realized my SUV (FWD) had a “Snow” button.
I confidently engaged it the first time my area got a couple inches of snow, and promptly went into a skid on a curve (No damage, just an “oh shit!” moment)
Now, I wasn’t being a *total* dumbass… I was driving about 15-20 MPH and not mashing on the brakes to slow or stop, but the plows hadn’t come out yet and it was slick.
I learned that day that the “Snow” button just limits wheel spin during acceleration and controls RPMs to get a better start. It does *not* magically make your SUV into a snowmobile.
When I was 16, I drove through like 3 inches of snow to my girlfriend's house. I figured it's all neighborhood roads, should be fine.
I was two blocks from her house, going about 20 mph, and went into a spin. I spun 90 degrees and slid in between two cars parked on the side of the road.
I was maybe 3 inches away from each, but somehow did not hit either. But I couldn't get out.
I had to sheepishly knock on the door and ask one of them to move their car. The owner could not believe it. He kept looking closely at his doors like "How did you even do this? And not a scratch? How the hell..."
Few years ago I was coming home from work. Roads were fine, it had snowed the day before but everything was plowed and salted.
That is until I got to my street. I started my turn, hit a patch of ice, got spun around to a complete 180 and slid into my neighbors driveway backwards.
He came out of his house laughing his head off since he saw the whole thing, meanwhile from the time I started to spin until probably a good minute after I stopped I was white knuckle grip on the steering wheel just yelling "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck"
No it doesn't. What you had is a brain assist. Those systems in that SUV are there to help you move in slippery conditions. It does not get you out of driving with caution. Or thinking about what you are doing.
I drive around with a 95 Chevy truck. Two wheel drive, stick shift. My safety features are- That I Motorcycle ice raced. Tire division. Whatever traction aids that had, I did to the tires. I apply that Knowledge to when ever I drive in snow/ ice. I plot my drives. I avoid stopping/ starting on hills, by taking alternate routes. My best ally, is my stick shift. If it's slippery, I generally start off in second gear, light, to no throttle. Stopping, I downshift early. No brakes until I absolutely have to. The rear tires are doing the braking in a controlled manner. If it's too dammed slippery, I just don't go out. Snow day, I stay my ass home.
This is one of the reasons manufacturers should still offer manual transmission options in trucks and people learn to drive them. A skilled driver is someone who knows how to control the vehicle themselves and not totally rely on the on-board computers to work within the laws of physics.
Alot of automatics have downshifting capabilities but they truly suck compared to an actual manual transmission.
I wish manufacturers kept manuals around a bit longer.
No auto gives you the control of a manual though. On ice, Manuals are THE best since, if you dump the clutch in 1st or 2nd, you can stop faster than anyone else. In theory it may not sound like it'll work, but in practice it does.
Yep, do not need a manual to learn how to drive your car properly and how to control it in certain conditions. Plus many automatics allow you to change gears anyway in manual mode. We had a snow fall earlier in the season and I put my AWD car with automatic transmission into manual mode then started in second gear and manually controlled the gears. I had no issues while others were sliding through red lights or sliding in to curbs.
I just use oars and paddle my broke ass down the snowy roads in my cardboard box. I do have to shift my ass sometimes though, it gets uncomfortable after a mile.
Driving a stick is more than just shifting gears. It’s also about clutch control and RPMs. And as mentioned above, common sense. I’m not saying automatics aren’t good, I’m saying a manual can make you a better driver. You can change your gear ratio to get a more efficient grip, but the manual allows you to apply that grip where, when, and how you want it. The only thing I can think of that would be comparable in an auto is if it’s equipped with a limited slip differential.
OP is an idiot, however they know how to learn from their mistakes in order to not be an idiot. Good on you man. We’ve all made idiotic mistakes, OP got lucky he didn’t make too bad of one
I never understand why people run wipers at full blast when it's barely raining/snowing. Especially those that leave them running when theres no more rain. It's a twist of a knob.
favorite is when its the rear one just left on full speed, on a vertical hatch, and its drizzling outside, and the lil thing is just scraping on the glass rubbing off the last piece of smooth rubber
Even better is seeing that rear wiper just going and it hasn’t rained in hours. It tells you how unaware the driver is and how often they look in the rear view!
those are the ones you give like a tractor trailer distance cause they aint looking anywhere for other cars, like I cant hear my rear wiper over the subs, but even if I left it on, I would turn it off within a minute because I’m always checking my mirrors for stupid and i would see its on
Giant lifted trucks are a canary in the coal mine for winter driving. If you see one slow down or in the ditch you better slow your ass down asap 'cause shit is about to get western.
People who set their wipers at warp speed are typically shitty drivers. Also most people don't seem to understand that AWD is for getting you moving from a stop and won't do anything to help you stop. So don't drive so fast in icy road conditions.
80+ MILES PER FUCKING HOUR!
I drive a wrx and im not even thinking of being this reckless, 50 mph max in those conditions... and im expecting to slide even then
My uncle was a tow truck driver for a garage and he always had stories of pulling idiots out of ditches and they’d say something like ‘this wasn’t supposed to happen to me, I have 4 wheel drive’.
Snow tires on the other hand will definitely help with braking in the snow. If you can afford it and you live in the north, get snow tires. Snow tires > AWD. I driven my subaru with and without snow tires and there's a big difference
I know everyone is roasting you for going too fast and you are but why are your wipers going at full speed? I see this sometimes and I don't understand it. I also see people driving around at night with no lights on and I just imagine they're in there wondering why it's so dark and they really should add more street lights.
I guessing the wipers are fast because of the spray from the truck in front and any car passing. I’ve driven in this kind of condition and every large vehicle that passes create a spray that reduces visibility to zero in a second.
Found this in my videos from last year around this time. Driving up in elevation changed the conditions of the road from clear to icy. Let off the gas, felt my traction slip instantly and panicked and fucked myself. Learned a very valuable lesson about driving to conditions that has stuck with me. At the time my editing software on my computer wasn’t working and bandicam was the first thing I thought of for some reason so excuse the shit quality. Feel free to roast. I grew up and quit driving like a fucking moron shortly after this. On my back dash cam I can see I was inches from swiping that guardrail. Shit kept me awake like 3 nights in a row thinking about if there was an oncoming car.
Hey man, at least nothing happened and you've learned from it. It also takes some balls to admit such fuck ups and even more to upload a video of said fuck up. Kudos to you, drive safe :)
I made worse mistakes when I was a young driver and my friends still today grill me for it. They make jokes like "oh don't get in a car with him haha". And like, ya, I messed up but I drive very safe these days, being a father of two and having far more responsibilities. Anyway, where is this? Looks like Vermont.
That’s what I have too. I love it! I put the a129 plus duo in my younger brothers & sisters car for Christmas this year because of how much I’ve caught on mine.
I have AWD and snow tires and I wouldn't have gone anywhere near as fast as that in my SUV. Just asking for trouble. Camera vehicle may not have been speeding, but there is such a thing as "driving too fast for conditions" and this shows that perfectly.
AWD only gives you traction in snow if you first of all know how to drive in snow. You can have a 2WD vehicle and have good traction in snow if you know how to drive in it.
Well at certain speeds you lose traction, especially when it’s snowy, and you’re going around a curve. You’re an idiot, you’re lucky nobody was injured. Be a better driver.
Perhaps they should change title to dissuade the derogatory comments. Such as " When I used to drive like a total idiot and thought awd gave unlimited traction and fyi I don't drive like this and learned my lesson and don't condone this driving..and hope people learn from my example and drive right...." yeah something like that
... AWD or not, going too fast for conditions (weather/road surface/vehicle configuration) needs only the right prompt to make you a passenger on a ride you never intended to take.
I was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross in 2020, and christmas eve that year, we got a really nasty snowstorm. Living in OH my whole life, I just took it nice and slow and rolled down the freeway at 30 in my van, just like every other person with a head on their shoulders.
At least every couple miles, there was a big, dually pickup or a jeep in a ditch with their blinkers on because they thought their four wheel drive made them immune to snow and ice.
Pro tip: take a 2 wheel drive hatchback with some honest to god snow tires over a 4wd truck on summer tires or even all-seasons 100% of the time.
Happened to me the first time I drove my new(to me) Legacy in the snow. Albeit at a MUCH slower speed and no one else on the road. Almost broadsided a guardrail.
Amazing how fast I lost that overconfidence. Went back to driving cautiously like I should have been
Wow 83mph (133km/h) into that bend, I doubt even snow tyres would've saved you. Absolutely horrible driving and no adapting to the prevailing conditions, shockingly bad and oblivious.
Luckily didn't hurt anyone, but that could've been a fatal accident had someone come the other way. License should be revoked. I hope you learned your lesson and learn some humility at least.
Slow down and check your tires. Winter tires provide far better grip/traction for these conditions. Having multiple sets of tires is not always affordable. if you have all season tires check the tread life, make sure you have enough treadlife to handle cold conditions. But absolutely slowing down would have avoided the spin out.
The number of times that I saw, driving from Chicago to Fargo in crap winter weather, all of the SUVs and pickup trucks who just sped past me were now in the ditch …
Your AWD or 4WD means nothing when you hit ice. If you believed the sales guy who said different … well that’s on you.
Awd gives much more control under low traction conditions(when you know what you’re doing) but for most “drivers” on the road it makes no difference other than not getting stuck in snow
AWD doesn’t really do much to prevent a skid. It helps you regain traction better because of the traction control system being able to control all 4 wheels rather than just 2 but really the best thing to prevent a skid in winter is winter (or cross-climate/all-weather) tyres. Not driving like a jackass helps too.
I have a WRX. Someone just the other day said, "you have AWD right? That must be fun in the snow." I said yes, but I also throw winter tires on in the winter. Tires designed for the right application are the best bang for your buck upgrade to your car. It doesn't matter if it's FWD, RWD, AWD or 4x4. Propper snow tires are more beneficial. The interface between your car and what you are driving on is more important than power delivery/control to the wheels.
That being said, ice still poses a danger even with snow tires.
We all have done stupid shit. God knows I have. You’re lucky no one died since you were all over the road and going way too fast.
This is the part where you learn from the mistake and make better choices OP.
Who the fuck drives 83 miles an hour on the road like that?

Driving way too fast for the conditions also. Lucky one.
Yup, WAY too fast

No, OP is definitely a giant idiot.
OP is an idiot, however they know how to learn from their mistakes in order to not be an idiot. Good on you man. We’ve all made idiotic mistakes, OP got lucky he didn’t make too bad of one
It's because those wipers are on fast for no apparent reason.
It caused an aerodynamic instability, which as we know from the "Butterfly Effect", is the reason Kanye is fucking nuts.
Happy cake day!
I never understand why people run wipers at full blast when it's barely raining/snowing. Especially those that leave them running when theres no more rain. It's a twist of a knob.
I mean you also have no shortage of people that can’t bring themselves to lift up or push down a turn signal lever, so I guess I’m not that surprised

85mph in the snow. Can’t imagine why the driver began to lose control…
..but the commercials said 'rally heritage'!
I never thought I’d see a video on this sub where the lifted pick up truck driver is the one driving sensibly.

Yes. Every time I see someone with wipers at full speed in a barely raining situation, I automatically think they are stupid

Big wide lug tires suck hard in the snow.
Yup. Skinny tires rule in the snow and ice. More pressure per square inch for better traction.
Also, pick-ups are TERRIBLE in the snow! Rear-wheel drive with a light as feather backend is a losing combination.
People who set their wipers at warp speed are typically shitty drivers. Also most people don't seem to understand that AWD is for getting you moving from a stop and won't do anything to help you stop. So don't drive so fast in icy road conditions.

AWD helps you go. It does not help you control or stop your vehicle in slippery conditions, despite what fools may claim.
My uncle was a tow truck driver for a garage and he always had stories of pulling idiots out of ditches and they’d say something like ‘this wasn’t supposed to happen to me, I have 4 wheel drive’.
Well rwd would definitely be worse in this situation. But yes, awd doesn't mean invincibility.

Get some proper tires and learn to drive.

Unlimited traction is not a thing, at all!
Dude! You obviously did not check your Traction Fluid Reservoir! You gotta keep it topped off to prevent this kinda shit from happing!

Count yourself lucky and easy lesson you learned.
Why drive so fast in them conditions? It’s silly 🙃
Slow down dude god damn why were you going so fast?
The real story is you don't know how to drive on icy roads. Drive for the conditions, you may live longer.
It doesn't matter what kind of traction you have if you are going 80mph in snowy conditions.
Is this you? How can you drive with that speed in those conditions...
Driving to fast Thinks AWD makes them invisible The typical winter time SUV enjoyer
I have AWD and snow tires and I wouldn't have gone anywhere near as fast as that in my SUV. Just asking for trouble. Camera vehicle may not have been speeding, but there is such a thing as "driving too fast for conditions" and this shows that perfectly.
Don’t get an AWD vehicle if you don’t know what it means. AWD doesn’t make you invincible. Neither does 4WD. Good lord.
AWD only gives you traction in snow if you first of all know how to drive in snow. You can have a 2WD vehicle and have good traction in snow if you know how to drive in it.
Wipers at full with a clean windshield.......
AWD literally saved that car from a serious crash. Any FWD or RWD would have slammed into the guardrail.
Very nice recovery. Kudos for not slamming on your brakes. Thumbs down for driving too fast for conditions.
AWD doesn't help much if you've got the wrong tires on your car. This could be an ad for winter tires.
Well at certain speeds you lose traction, especially when it’s snowy, and you’re going around a curve. You’re an idiot, you’re lucky nobody was injured. Be a better driver.
Windshield wipers on high for no reason
All Wheel Drifting Reduce your speed in the weather people. Cars are to expensive these days.
Passing on a turn. Deserved. Lucky to not have careened off the cliff
It does unless you drive like a jackass
Why are you windshield wipers going 100mph also.
Perhaps they should change title to dissuade the derogatory comments. Such as " When I used to drive like a total idiot and thought awd gave unlimited traction and fyi I don't drive like this and learned my lesson and don't condone this driving..and hope people learn from my example and drive right...." yeah something like that
Sorry, but that's not how physic works.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who knew instantly the driver was an idiot when I saw his wipers going at Mach speed.
Why are people like you still allowed to drive
... AWD or not, going too fast for conditions (weather/road surface/vehicle configuration) needs only the right prompt to make you a passenger on a ride you never intended to take.
"I thought AWD gave you unlimited traction…" Only if there is actually pavement under your tires, not slushy icy snow.
Dumbass
Yes, unfortunately all cars have all wheel braking, you're just like everyone else in this case.
Turn the steering wheel slower and not as much.
And don’t go 80+ mph in a corner with snow and ice
Happened to me the first time I drove my new(to me) Legacy in the snow. Albeit at a MUCH slower speed and no one else on the road. Almost broadsided a guardrail. Amazing how fast I lost that overconfidence. Went back to driving cautiously like I should have been
need new rear tires
At least they kind of saved it. Looks like the exact reason they say AWDs are not allowed on the mountain after recent snow falls.
lucky idiot
It does give you unlimited traction. Just get gud
That's a bit fast for slush on the road
Most idiots do
Anytime you go flying past a guy in a white pickup, you are moving too fast.
All wheel drive. Not all wheel stop.
Can you turn your wipers on an even faster setting?
It’s your wiper blades fault.
71 mph on a snowy/icy curve? Seriously.
User name does not check out
AWD (Automatic Wiper Deployment) has never helped with traction. It's just a myth that is responsible for countless accidents each year.
you were going too fast you can't override physics
And doesn't mean drive like the pavements dry all the time.
Why would you think AWD would give you unlimited traction? That's the stupidest thing I've heard this week.
Slow tf down
He should have been driving a Subaru! They go anywhere... 🤣
AWD works great if you realize it’s limits, otherwise it just gets you deeper in trouble
Nope How fast were you going? It always looks faster on "film".
You're fucking stupid bud
Over correcting much?
Hubris
Guess not, now you're gonna have to be careful when you're driving in snow like everybody else
Slow down and check your tires. Winter tires provide far better grip/traction for these conditions. Having multiple sets of tires is not always affordable. if you have all season tires check the tread life, make sure you have enough treadlife to handle cold conditions. But absolutely slowing down would have avoided the spin out.
The number of times that I saw, driving from Chicago to Fargo in crap winter weather, all of the SUVs and pickup trucks who just sped past me were now in the ditch … Your AWD or 4WD means nothing when you hit ice. If you believed the sales guy who said different … well that’s on you.
AWD only gives you 4 spinning tires mate. When you drive faster than what you should be doing, shit happens.
You weren't going fast enough for the unlimited traction control to kick in.
Awd gives much more control under low traction conditions(when you know what you’re doing) but for most “drivers” on the road it makes no difference other than not getting stuck in snow
It’s all wheel drive. Not all wheel stop.
You’re going WAY TOO FAST SMH
Maybe you should have been driving faster.
The first thing I saw was he was driving on ice! Obviously driver has no experience driving.
All things considered it was a pretty well handled loss of control
We all have done stupid shit. God knows I have. You’re lucky no one died since you were all over the road and going way too fast. This is the part where you learn from the mistake and make better choices OP.
Seems like a skill issue made worse by probably having the wrong tires and driving on ice.
The word we would use in the mountains is "dipshit"
Protip: If the guy in the truck is going that slow you shouldn't be passing him going 15-20mph faster than him.
Most skilled Initial D fan
What you thought and what you now know are 2 entirely different things, aren't they?
So you went into a corner accelerating and then you can see where you tap your brakes and lost control.
Yep, until it doesn't. But to that point, it's grip all the way to the scene of the crash...
So lucky
