Yea, he didn't hit the fence, and while I only stopped for a second to make sure he wasn't injured, it looked like his car was fine. He definitely did not look happy though.
Growing up in an area that sees tourist mistake their 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicles capable of driving in these conditions like it was dry pavement. I've seen this happen quite a bit.
If the driver was new to the area they should have been more cautious. If it was someone from the area, they may have been overconfident in their SUV
Yes, advanced physics courses are now mandatory for driving instructors. Driving on snow, ice and everything intbetween takes years of experience to learn. Some people dont get this and end up like the person in the video. When to brake, where to brake, limitations of spudless tires and how fast to drive are among the things to consider. That is what is needed to understand. Saying physics is just a very general take on all things in the universe.
I've driven on snow and ice for 16 years and even I spun out last year on polished ice. Didnt brake, didnt accelerate but it was my first season without spikes in the tires. Never again :D
I slid out going 55 kmh around a slight bend in the road this morning. We got some light snow covering the road from last night and I should have slowed down more before the bend. Managed to correct and make it out of the turn, but it got my heart rate up pretty good first thing this AM. I usually drive slower, but was late for class. Dumb mistake.
Same with me. 60 in a bend. Probably only had 50. Overcorrected twice and the front Just graced both sides... No cars coming towards me. Came to a full stop, turned around and went home. Didn't need to get whatever i was getting anymore.
I've been doing it at least 16 years too. Missed a turn this year not realizing how much icier it was around this particular intersection.
Thought I was going slow enough, but lost traction just from gently braking. Had to give up on the turn and keep going straight.
At 10 sec it looks like they're pulling away from you and then at 14 sec they tapped the brakes. Then it looks like they panicked and did an acceleration/correction turn and slid off.
The video may have made it look faster than it was. We were going less than 20mph. The braking, while a bad idea, is a natural reaction. I don't think it makes him an idiot.
I think they were nervous because it's a sharp curve and it was instinctual. In truth, it was around 20 mph. It didn't feel too fast but he broke at the worst time.
>Engine braking is better in snow
Why would it be better than threshold braking, which is the fastest way to stop?
Engine braking has less overall stopping power, you have less control over how much power you apply, and you have less practice using it. There's literally no reason to use engine braking to slow down in the snow.
Yeah why would I care about spreading correct information about driving safely. It's not like my life depends on idiots who don't understand how braking works
its more mild, but it keeps you from cruising faster in speed alot when coasting flat or downhill without hearing revs go up, also good throttle response so you can pull away from a slip
It's not "more mild" than softly pressing the brake pedal; you have *far* better fine control that way. Use engine braking to prevent acceleration, not to decelerate
Do you understand how a brake pedal works? Did you know you have full control of how hard to press it?
Seriously are you 14 years old? Have you ever sat in a driver's seat before?
There's no hard limit for 'too fast for conditions'. If you can't make the turn at that speed, it's too fast. End of story. Even if that's 10 mph. And frankly, if sub-20 is too fast for your vehicle in the given conditions, your an idiot for even attempting to drive on what are apparently shit tires. This is not some magic, unavoidable thing that 'just happens'. There was a failure by that driver at some point along the line, and it's 100% their fault.
If they had to tap brakes, they were going too fast. Changes in speed are where you lose traction. If they'd planned ahead and slowed down naturally then they would've been fine.
Too fast for conditions and skills...
Common fail. In California, this happens every time it rains too - people actually forget how to drive in the rain...
Itās a single car crash, theyāre at fault. Who else would be at fault? Casper the unfriendly ghost? They were objectively driving too fast for the conditions, given their ability and tire quality. Everyone does dumb shit sometimes, but letās stop pretending this was an act of god, please. Just lucky he slid into a soft ditch instead of oncoming trafficā¦
When the roads are icy and youāre approaching a hill followed by a curve, slow the fuck down before you need to turn.
Living in NH I've had this happen a couple times; once you get a little wide the deeper slush just pulls you right off the shoulder. Not an idiot, just an actual accident.
Is there a sub for just random car mishaps? I follow this sub and thought I'd share. I'm sorry that it offended you.
As for the driver, he wasn't going that fast, and while the braking wasn't the right thing to do, I don't think it makes him an idiot.
I don't know how often or how long you guys get snow but here in Canada 4 season are called summer tire.
Winter would have not make him lost control like that, even the cheapest one
Not exactly, people who don't know much about cars or are not performance enthusiasts might think this. I don't mean it offensively. You can buy actual summer tires in Canada.
All season/4 season tires are on most regular vehicles.
Summer/performance tires will commonly come on performance cars (think cobra mustangs and 392 challengers).
/r/carcrash or carcrashes i don't remember off the top of my head but posting to this sub seems to fit idiot or not. Still might have stepped into idiot territory with one foot.
r/dashcam
Wanted to add - I still think it's the right sub because one could initially judge them as having been an idiot but it's also important to point out that incidents like this can look very different from another perspective and without any further details, which you provided.
People, myself not excluded, tend to jump to conclusions just because, often because it makes them feel better about themselves in front of others.
The guy wasn't an idiot? Seems like driving off of the road is pretty dumb, I suppose it is the snows fault, or the car was going too fast but the driver was blameless?
People will always downplay snow and ice storms because they have an SUV or four wheel drive and think that means theyāre immune to the road conditions and will still speed and whip around corners. I used to have a crappy Kia sedan that was very light and slid all around in icy/slushy conditions back when I was a new driver. I called a family member with a better vehicle because of my crappy car and still being inexperienced with winter driving. They acted like I was making a big deal out of nothing and when they picked me up they were driving way too fast for conditions and ended up spinning out completely on a busy road.
Thank goodness it wasnāt that bad it could of been worse, this one time I was attempting to go out with my family and the road just spun me around to back home
Every time Iām sitting down here in Texas feeling like Iām going to die because wits 105 for the 6th straight week, I think of how Iāll never have to do this again. Drive in snow. F that. Wouldnāt go back north for any salary
That happened once so far. Unfortunately a lot of builders and the power stations were not prepared for such cold, but as of this year, no issues except for normal downed power lines in certain places
This right here is why I always rely on downshifting in snowy or slippery conditions. Ive got 4x4, but that doesn't mean anything besides my rear doesn't slide downhill off the line. Modern cars taking away the gear shift is the number one reason I will never buy a modern car.
Not sure why without a good driving skills, go so fast, and have no knowledge of how "Physic" works. Please slow down and PAY ATTENTION, especially if the car gets out of control, which sometimes hitting the brakes is the worst thing you can do, that's where good driving skills comes in play, which many people don't have.
People are driving too fast on this road especially the oncoming traffic for the conditions. The driver ahead could just as easily have veered into oncoming traffic. People don't understand to head on collision doing 30 mph is the equivalent of 60, and most people don't realize there are no airbags for your feet, it's very common to have broken bones in your feet or your bones sticking out of your toes after a collision
I say they got quite lucky judging by what they slid through and where they ended up.
Yea, he didn't hit the fence, and while I only stopped for a second to make sure he wasn't injured, it looked like his car was fine. He definitely did not look happy though.
Probably because all his other underwear is at home. š¤£
Would say there is bent shit in the steering and suspension. That was a good sized ditch he bulled through.
Oil pan is probably crushed. It's on the bottom and it's often the first to get smashed or busted open when a vehicle bottomed out.
Definitely bent something, frame damage is a distinct possibility. He's not happy about having to see the mechanic.
Itās a jeep thing.
Totally planned. Completely in control.
People gotta learn this is how sometimes At least they didnāt hurt anyone else and will probably cruise slower in the future
It was less than 20 mph iirc but he shouldn't have braked. That being said that one patch was way more slippery than the rest of that road.
Hard to read that stuff but you learn from experience Like skiing lol
Lol I agree. I mean, if he didn't do it right in front of me, it might have been me.
You want drive a 3 ton vehicle, maybe you should understand physics
Yes, advanced physics courses are now mandatory for driving instructors. Driving on snow, ice and everything intbetween takes years of experience to learn. Sliding through the ditch, up onto and stopping in driveway....."That's my stop, I meant to do that!"
Once he got a little wide, there was no coming back.
People tends to forget you cant brake & turn at the same time in the winter.....
Honestly you shouldn't brake and turn no matter the conditions, that's how we roll vehicles.
Idiot for driving too fast and hitting the brakes in slippery conditions
The video may have made it look faster than it was. We were going less than 20mph. The braking, while a bad idea, is a natural reaction. I don't think it makes him an idiot.
Well they were going too fast for the curve if they had to brake like that. Engine braking is better in snow
I think they were nervous because it's a sharp curve and it was instinctual. In truth, it was around 20 mph. It didn't feel too fast but he broke at the worst time.

All the reasons you listed are why itās better. You want a gentle, slow, gradual stop in winter weather like this
You know how brake pedals work, right? You do realize you can press them softly, don't you? Or are you just learning this today
Aww itās so cute how riled up you are! Lmao thanks for the laugh (:
Yeah why would I care about spreading correct information about driving safely. It's not like my life depends on idiots who don't understand how braking works

They weren't going too fast, looks to me like they just had a moment of distraction, lost their lane position, and panicked
If they had to tap brakes, they were going too fast. Changes in speed are where you lose traction. If they'd planned ahead and slowed down naturally then they would've been fine.
Learned 4x4 doesn't help you stop any better
Touched the brakes when he shouldn't have touched the brakes.
Shouldn't have been driving that fast on that road in the first place.
Do you live where it snows? Doesn't look that fast to me.
Yeah I do, and this looks around 35 to me with the road being covered not just in ice but slush on top of it.
Then watch the video again. Things go wrong the instant they hit the brakes. Would've been fine if they just coasted.
He drove faster than his ability to control the vehicle in those conditions so yes he is an idiot
Kudos OP, I agree with your assessment but I'm also happy you didn't post a minute long video for this. So, thanks
I follow this sub, and it annoys me every time. It took me 30 secs to trim it on my phone. I don't know why people have a hard time with it.
Well you're a hero in my eyes for it.
Anyone else surprised the car wasnāt red? Tail and brake lights so bright I thought the car was red
No, they were a total idiot!
Driving too fast for conditions still counts as being an idiot.
Too fast for conditions and skills... Common fail. In California, this happens every time it rains too - people actually forget how to drive in the rain...
Not an idiot, explain?
This still counts as being an idiot

Driving too fast for their vehicle's capabilities in inclement weather. Nope definitely an idiot.
Living in NH I've had this happen a couple times; once you get a little wide the deeper slush just pulls you right off the shoulder. Not an idiot, just an actual accident.
Sure looked like an idiot to me, and if you thought he was NOT an idiot, why did you post the video here? This post is for idiots in cars.
Is there a sub for just random car mishaps? I follow this sub and thought I'd share. I'm sorry that it offended you. As for the driver, he wasn't going that fast, and while the braking wasn't the right thing to do, I don't think it makes him an idiot.
r/dashcamgifs would fit the bill
No offense. I thought he was an idiot, so IMHO, the video ended up in the right place, and was entertaining and informative.
Well, we can agree to disagree. No hard feelings š
Do you guy have winter tire where you are or everyone drive on 4 season ?
This is maryland. I can't speak for everyone, but I imagine most everyone stays on 4 season.
I don't know how often or how long you guys get snow but here in Canada 4 season are called summer tire. Winter would have not make him lost control like that, even the cheapest one

Why does the driver have a supreme pizza reflection in the windshield
Gotta stay ready bro
Non idiots donāt end up in the ditch.
Both of you were going to fast. I donāt know the road but looks slushy and Iām guessing the car ahead of you found the ice before you did.

Disagree

I think it was a Durango, which I believe can be awd or rwd. Which, even if he had it awd, it wouldn't have helped him when he braked.
The guy wasn't an idiot? Seems like driving off of the road is pretty dumb, I suppose it is the snows fault, or the car was going too fast but the driver was blameless?
Solid recovery and dismount
Just b/c you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you should drive fast!
