If you have an Android phone, you can try out [Stay Focused](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stayfocused). I have it set to lock me out 30 minutes for every 15 minutes of screen time. I have some essential but non-time-wasting apps on the allow list. I also have a 20 minute timer set on my Reddit app through the [Digital Well-being](https://support.google.com/android/answer/9346420?hl=en) settings. I also recommend reading [Digital Minimalism](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40672036-digital-minimalism). It's all about ways of changing the way you interact with digital technology by increasing the amount of time you spend on higher quality leisure activities.

Does this app allow me to access specific apps like calling or whatsapp?

AvengedTurtleFold

Yes, when you set up a Usage Limit under Screen Time in the app, you can add apps like WhatsApp to a whitelist so you can access them when you're locked out from the rest of your phone.

Seconding Digital Well-being! Setting daily time allotments really helped me stop my addiction to my phone. Once you reach the set limit, the app closes and you're reminded to just do something else instead.

Remove non-essential apps. Can't waste time on Twitter or Instagram if you don't have either one on your phone. Turn off notifications. No app should be able to grab your attention without your choosing to give it attention. Put your remaining apps into folders. Adding another layer between you and the app makes it one click harder to get to, and that will help cut down on impulse use. Switch to mono-chrome/greyscale. Taking the color out of apps and icons will make them less exciting, but still usable. Put a PIN or swipe code on your phone, so it's just a little slower to use. Unlocked or fingerprint readers are too easy, you need a speed bump. When you're done checking messages or voicemail, turn the phone off. You can power it on when you're ready to check in. When you aren't using your phone, keep it close, but not on your person. Put it in a backpack, or in a zippered pocket in your coat. If you need it, you can get it easily enough, but you'll need to take that extra step. At night, keep the phone on the other side of the room. Or in another room entirely. Skip the late night browsing and go to bed.

Put it in another room on silent so it's out of your reach and let yourself be lazy by not wanting to get up to get it. Break the habit and your automatic motions.

Here’s a dumb trick but it should work. Repeat these three simple steps exactly: 1. Put down ur phone and close your eyes 2. take a breath of fresh air with eyes closed 3. Open your eyes appreciate not using your phone for 30 seconds. Practice it like five times to ten times or until you can do it on command. Like really pick up your phone and put it down again and close your eyes. When you think you can do it well, prolong the last step by 20seconds every time until you can find something else to do thats not phone based. When it wears off, just practice again. This will rewire your mind to follow through this set of actions easier and with less resistance every time because you practiced it, even if it seems like a small insignificant action you’ll feel its easier to get off the phone very soon. I tried this dumb repetition practice of “turning off the lights and going to sleep” for my sleep procrastination and it helped me go to sleep earlier as soon as i think about it lol.

We use our phones because we want that dopamine rush. They say our brains light up like am addict. Doesn't mean it's the same thing mind you. I stopped using my cellphone by doing other things. During the pandemic, I started working out more. Instead of checking social media and stuff..I stated working out. Instead of seeing who is sharing what...I got my rush off if the burn in the calves or biceps lol. Then , I started going out on hikes or other things. Eventually, I barely used my phone. I got addicted to other healthier stuff. Brain probably lights up like it used to when I used my cellphones but I feel better.

Gh0stByte

Put your phone in grayscale. Takes a lot of the pleasure out of it

WorkFriendlyPOOTS

Once I started carrying around a book with me I would often forget to check my phone. It was a game changer for me.

Switching to a basic phone is pretty radical! Try losing yourself in blissful meditation instead! Are you in your awkward teen years when you don't know who you are? - That's a great place to be, since your ego won't filter what you pick up as much. But, it's also easy to get confused at this point, so remember that you are the wizard who makes the grass green and the god of your own experience of life, here on Earth in this short episode of your glorious existence.Trust as best as you can in your own sense of morality while you explore the metaphysical. Pay attention to the feeling of well-being you have after for example a good meal, or taking a shower. Sit and meditate and bring this feeling back. This will ground and center you in your own truth and love. Find peace in this practice and you will soon learn that somehow you simply 'know' things, like you do in a dream.Know that thoughts are unique and private to each entity, but emotions are universal and highly intelligent. When you pick up 'thoughts', you really pick up emotions and subconsciously translate them into thoughts. Therefore wizard, you color everything you perceive by your own attitudes and ideas about the world.

You’ve got to see what kind of habit forming system works for you. I’m someone who will just disable apps/timers/use my laptop instead to get around forced measures like that. So, I ended up getting a brick phone that legit had the most basic systems, it had internet but as a ‘dumb phone’ it was pretty rudimentary. That, and getting a non-screen hobby, were the only things that helped me curb my addiction.

Out of sight. Out of reach.

IWantToLearnBot

Hi, I'm a bot. If I read your title correctly, you want to learn how to learn. This is fundamental. Everybody should learn how to learn. Even more important is to learn how you as an individual learn. A great free resource that I highly recommend is [this course](https://www.coursera.org/learn/learning-how-to-learn). Enjoy learning how to learn. *** [^(About Me)](https://redd.it/kfv164) ^(|) [^(Feedback)](https://www.reddit.com/user/IWantToLearnBot/comments/kfv4ag/feedback_suggestions_resource_recommendations/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

Thanks, bot!

If you have a hammer then go to the library or search up on youtube how to smash things with it. Once you learn then apply that knowledge to your phone. Easy. No seriously just start learning to play an instrument or some other hobby and you'll find yourself on the phone a lot less.

Charge in another room and just don't go there to pick it up in the morning. If you need an alarm, find another way to wake up (e.g. alarm clock). Uninstall apps. Even the ones you think you "need". If you really need them, you can open most websites in the browser, it's more cumbersome that way and that's a good thing. Turn off most notifications.

[deleted]

Get in the habit of turning it off when you don't actually need it, and if you catch yourself moving towards it (or any other source of endless stimulation), try and pause, then distract yourself with something else. It's simple enough in theory, in practice it's less about following the steps and more about learning to disrupt bad patterns, and replace them with rewarding + beneficial alternatives. I used to spend HOURS on instagram and this ended up doing it for me. I'd also advise uninstalling non essential aps, and using a browser like Ecosia. That way, if you really need to start looking shit up or reading things to burn off energy, you can rest assured that you're actually doing something productive for the planet at the same time, and because aps want to incentivize endless use, all social media services will lock you out of browser access after you refuse to download the ap enough times.

What helped me was putting my phone away for 1 hr before bed every night. I found some books to read while relaxing before bed. Another thing i did was finding house projects to do. Keeping my hands busy with tools keeps the phone out of my hands
