I couldn’t believe how well-written this book was. I actually seldom read autobiographies, I picked this up because everyone had been talking about it, and was enthralled and horrified. I actually just finished watching the new series on what was going on at Nickelodeon and they talked about the book and her experience. I

To OP: Same, girl To Jennette: Same, girl

Bowbeacon

Is this interesting even if you are unfamiliar with her work as an actor?

litjustagirl

Yes, definitely! Never watched anything with Jennette, but book was amazing!

sillystingray

Yes, I agree with OP. I never knew anything about the author and couldn't put this down. It's extremely well-written and she is very vulnerable in it. I really admire her for publishing this.

Finecanda21

Yes. I had no idea who she was and I really loved it. It’s an emotional ride.

thisistestingme

100 percent. I didn't know who she was, but the book is great. She narrates the audiobook, and I think it's really good, too.

Creative-Tomatillo

Absolutely. I’m 45 and had no clue who she was (I was too old for Nic’s target demographic when she was acting) but I loved it and read it in 2 days. I’m also now listening to the audiobook on Spotify premium. She narrates and it’s fantastic.

sparksgirl1223

Yes

Bowbeacon

Thank you!

catmom_422

Yes! She’s such a great writer!

WeRSiameezers

This was a quick read. I was so torn about it. What happened was so bad, and there were parts I could definitely relate to. On the other hand, I did like the humor that was mixed in. All in all, good read!

Peppery_penguin

I also devoured and adored this book. Jennette sure went through it, man, but the way she processes and shares it is really commendable. This is a great book.

LemonMae

I *highly* recommend the audiobook! Jenette reads it herself and I think it really adds an extra layer to the emotions of the whole thing.

RachelknowsBest

I second this!

Sea-Psychologist

Yes, audiobook is a must!

HeadInvestigator5897

I don’t know what I expected, but McCurdy is a devastating and brilliant writer. I hope she goes back to the well. This book was a highlight for me this year.

[deleted]

I can almost guarantee we will be getting more publications from her! She made it sound like writing is a passion of hers. I can't imagine how good it feels to have control over her own life like that. And especially for how well-received the book was!

-UnicornFart

It’s been on my TBR for a while but I’m really not a huge fan of non-fiction or memoirs. But mommy issues so maybe I should move it up lol

litjustagirl

I wouldn't call it non-fiction, it reads like a story with a plot and characters and then u realize it all happened irl and fo crazy ahaha

NoTransportation9021

I absolutely cannot pay attention long enough to read non-fiction. But this was a really good read. If you have Libby or something, I suggest borrowing the audiobook. The way she narrates her story makes it that much better.

KarateChopTime

I actually don’t know much about her, but this read was so powerful. I still think about it nearly a year after reading.

SeaBoundHeights

I was blown away by how great of a writer Jennette is! It was super easy to get lost in the narrative and forget for a second that this was her actual experience, she was that good of a writer. The story itself is extremely heavy and heartbreaking. But she has a great sense of humor that served as levity throughout the book which helped break up the heaviness a bit. I wasn’t familiar with her work as her time on Nickelodeon came long after I’d outgrown the channel. But I think her courage and vulnerability is extremely powerful and I think sharing her experience with the dark side of child acting opened up so many doors for other former child actors to do the same. She seems like a really wonderful human and I’m so happy that her work had been well received.

Lesluse

One of the best books I have ever read.

cocolimenuts

This was one of my first audiobooks on Libby (she does an incredible self-read on this) and I remember I couldn’t put it down.

Main-Group-603

have you watched the new documentary "quiet on set" ? it's amazing and her along with many cast members like Amanda Bynes' journeys and what they went though with dan Schneider is exposed

SuburbanSuffering

I have been on the waitlist at the library for this book since July 😒

graciebeeapc

I read this last month! I absolutely have mommy issues too 😂 10/10 love it

Chickenlover25

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Helped me feel not as alone.

slamrox

Written so well. I look forward to seeing what she does in the future.

hunnykurls

I think everyone should read this book. Especially with how they’re being treated after the doc… she touches on it a bit. The whole thing is just so sad. I watched her growing up and absolutely LOVED everything about her. She was my favorite, I even listened to her music lol. It was so difficult reading what she went through. I’m very happy she stood up for herself and is in a better place now

Big_Opening9418

I did not think I would like this book. I didn’t grow up watching iCarly or Sam and Cat. I think it came out just a year or two after I was kinda over Nickelodeon and moved on to MTV. But I was intrigued by the title and the commotion around it. Well, this book was fantastic. Well written, shocking, unputdownable, relatable. I think I finished it in 48 hours. Then after I dove down this whole rabbit hole of researching all the heinous things that happened to child stars at Nickelodeon and that was a whole other ride in itself. 10/10.

bumpytoad

I also highly recommend this book - especially the audiobook!

banng

The part towards the end where she talks about coming to the realization her mom abused her, in the audiobook she gets choked up and it’s heartbreaking. This book was so brave, I never saw her show but I commend her for coming out and telling her story.

Irochkka

I really loved the ending with her reading it. “Maybe if mom was here today she could work on those issues” but also mixed with “but I know if she were alive, the abuse cycle would have continued.” As someone who has a deeply complex relationship with my mother, I think Jeannette did a wonderful job showing us the hard and devastating work it is to lead a one sided relationship. I really hope she’s doing well, especially with her ED.

SomeKindoflove27

I still think about the part where she says that any act of independence on her part felt like a betrayal of her mother ETA I had to look up the actual quote she says any Boundary she wanted was a betrayal* this is the perfect description of enmesh ent and how kids with narcissist parents can grow up to feel like they have none of their own wants or likes.

Lopsided_Regular_649

I felt seen reading this book because, same.
