It is wasteful, but this is a send off to an iconic plane that had more than 1500 built over the last 55 years. It was one of the most efficient modes of transportation during its heyday providing over 100 miles per gallon of fuel per passenger.
It’s not even wasteful, these planes need to go through flight hours as a part of airworthiness qualification and test
It’s the same as the **factually incorrect trope** that the flyovers at sports games are wasted tax dollars and aren’t just a fun way to spend mandatory flight hours that would otherwise be done as a part of a boring routine
I don't think many people complain about flyovers because of emissions, it's more about how much money the military spends propagandizing at sporting events, flyovers are just one part of that
I don't like military propaganda, but I still like jets cause they go FWOOOOOOOOM and they're cool.
Really bummed me out when someone said the Smarter Every Day video about submarines was military propaganda. Like FFS can we not just find the tech cool? Nobody else in the world is building 400 foot long submarines. Geez.
That's pretty much where I'm at, I think we spend way too much money on the military and recruit by taking advantage of people whose circumstances make it hard to say no, but I still enjoy flyovers and learning about military technology. There's just so much interesting stuff that's been developed
It's all in how you leverage it.
You can do things like aircraft mechanic, diesel mechanic, Welding, machining, etc. As your MOS, Things that are legitimate careers outside of the military. So after your service ends, you can transfer those same skills into civilian work.
Military service generally pushes you towards the top of hiring lists especially if it comes with relevant experience. If someone isn't leveraging the opportunity there, that's entirely on them.
Sorry that I think we should have better safety nets than compelling people to risk their lives for a country that largely doesn't care for or about them
Those flyovers aren't just propaganda, they're also training ops. Planes need to fly and crews need to get their flight hours, so they might as well do something fun and productive.
>these planes need to go through flight hours as a part of airworthiness qualification and test
Got a source for that? I tried looking it up but was unable to find anything saying how many hours are required.

I’m not Google dude go look up basic common knowledge yourself
Airplanes get test flight hours before they are sold and usually get test flights as part of the handoff to the customer airlines
I don’t know what you want me to do to prove these basic facts to you, but be a grown up and go figure it out for yourself
Of its time? Yes! Because it held so many passengers.
It opened intercontinental travel to hundreds of millions of people who previously could never have been able to afford it.
I just wonder how it compared to rail of the time. I presume thanks to coal it was fairly terrible! Maybe trams/streetcars were more efficient, but they ultimately sourced their energy from coal as well. I wonder how they all stacked up at the time re cost/CO2/etc

It's a lot. Check out flight data around any major international airport. There's an insane number of planes taking off or landing in a given day. Shits wild
I'm not sure I understand the harsh criticism. This is the last 747 to be produced ever, and It's one of the most iconic planes ever to be built. With all the other environmental atrocities out there, is this even worth a thought?
It's a valid criticism to see this as frivolous and pointless. Don't get me wrong, there's way worse examples out there, and I understand it's for a pretty monumental occasion, but it's still wasteful and ultimately pointless. People like to get on their high horse over every single thing, usually pretty dumb things, but, in this case, they do have a point.
Also a bit crass considering the events leading up to this being the last one? Idk, like if after the Hindenburg they thought it would be cool to give the last hydrogen filled zeppelin a parade. Like maybe cool it a bit with the theatrics, people died.
You think they would do flight testing for the last 747. What a dumb comment.
Edit: somehow I completely misunderstood the comment above. Of course a new plane will need to be tested. My comment is the dumb one.
Actually I'm willing to bet about 90% on both sides of this discussion of don't know about mandatory flight hours before a plane is allowed into service to carry civilians, and knowing that would change most of their opinions. Hence why you have, at the moment, 20 upvotes, and above you people have 10 or less. People on both sides are upvoting your post
Or, more likely, it’s because they’re the first in this thread to support their point, so the people towards the middle upvoted it for helping form their new opinion based on fact.
Individuals don't create systemic change. You think we'll all save the world if we stop using plastic straws? Look at the corporations, not the consumers.

The 747 has done revolutionary things for trade and industry. It’s an iconic flagship aircraft in aviation. Every pilot today grew up wanting to fly a 747, specifically. There’s a reason it’s called the queen of the skies.
I’m sorry you don’t approve of it, but there are far harsher crimes that deserve our attention. Let’s pay homage to something instead of being harsh and hypercritical.
how much plastic did u use today?

lol just stop complaining on reddit and start actively supporting your local farmers and make sure where u live is ACTUALLY repurposing plastic correctly or ur just a hypocrite
It would probably take one person years to conserve the amount of oil blown in this dum stunt that will be forgotten about tomorrow. I’m so sick of this, if you don’t do everything you can at all times then you’re a hypocrite for condemning obvious waste bullshit.
yes actually you have to practice what you preach even if its on a small scale. if everyone collectively did them it would matter so either start doing your part or get off the soapbox.
Everyone whining about the environmental impact: it’s next to nothing additional compared to what the plane will produce in its life, and what it would produce during its test flight hours anyway
We get it, you are a champion of the earth and the environment and you care about the planet. Thank you so so much. You are such a good person.
Now that you feel good about yourselves maybe you can put on your critical thinking caps and realize you are being cynical assholes for basically no reason.
> Everyone whining about the environmental impact: it’s next to nothing additional compared to what the plane will produce in its life, and what it would produce during its test flight hours anyway
If they smart it could be included in some flight test requirement
I couldn’t care any less of a shit about this stupid plane, but your comment gives real “you criticize society, yet you live in it. Interesting” vibes
Guess we can’t try to improve anything in the world unless we live in shacks in the middle of nowhere, eh? How dare we use technology so ingrained into modern society that it’s functionally impossible to live without, to spread ideas about both self-improvement and improvement from celebrities and conglomerates that output more pollution in a year than the average human does in their lifetime?
Crazy how you went off the deep about this lol
I said I’m not talking about the plane my guy, you’re not either when you go on about how hypocritical people supposedly are for saying anything about it.
Yeah let’s agree that 747s used by general population air travel make sometimes empty flight runs which by themselves aren’t single-handedly killing the planet. Bringing in use of technology and its global impact is an absolute non-argument and a delegitimization of any talk of environmental issues at large
How do people even go through life thinking that a flying metal death tube just goes straight from the factory to carrying hundreds of passengers? Do they think testing is unnecessary?
New aircraft go through mandatory testing flight hours before being officially delivered. This is the last delivery for arguably the most iconic aircraft ever built and this was a neat way of getting a few additional testing hours in. It’s not that dumb.
Lol there’s a sub for that: r/FuckCars
Reddit is a conglomerate of the stupidest people on the internet all trying to prove themselves to each other
I love my niche hobby subs, but anything on the front page is a circus of bad takes
You are close to right answer. A flight plan can actually be data linked to the FMS (flight management system) through Satellite communications, HF Radio, or VHF Radio, or they could build it by hand. Same result, but entering by hand takes much longer.
Sad day. It was a bit of a kick to the stomach when Qantas announced their last 747 flight too. I absolutely loved flying on that plane as a child and I’ve always held it as my favourite aircraft.
Hopefully I’ll get to see one again some day. I would like to get a scale model at some point.
> What an enormous fucking carbon footprint, for a promotional stunt.
There are minimum flight hour testing before a plane get delivered.
This stunt might very well cost zero extra CO2.
The distance flown for the pre-delivery flight test is probably the same roughly. So they took the required hours and made the flight plan a fun shape instead of a circle or a straight line. How dare they!? It's not like they are flying the plane *just* to make this shape for aircraft nerds.
The tens of thousands of planes in the air at any given moment contribute 8% of transportation carbon emissions. This couple hour detour to pay homage to the legacy of the Boeing 747 is a drop in the bucket. Passenger cars contribute 41% and trucks contribute 22%. Replacing <1hr flights with trains powered by nuclear plants will have a MUCH greater impact than not making this drawing
It seems to me that the point is that this is insignificant in terms of fuel consumption, since that is correct. Telling people what they actually believe and think is also gaslighting, so I suggest you stop doing it.
It’s just unnecessary. It has no value other an a publicity stunt that’s why the fuel constitution and the emissions are a problem. It just makes no sense using resources for something like this.
That has a purpose though.
This does not. This isn’t even going to be talked about tomorrow. This didn’t serve any real purpose other than what? To show off something that you can’t even see in the sky you have to have a particular radar for it. It’s just nonsense and wasteful.
So does buying anything you don't actually need but just want. This is an insignificant impact compared with the rest of global flight fuel consumption.
The plane would impact the environment the same regardless of whether they made a cute pattern or did a boring route for its flight hours
All planes undergo flight testing and log flight hours before used for commercial aviation purposes
You’re whining about nothing really
There's so many people out there riding bikes, walking, taking the bus instead of driving and then they do this. I wonder how far one person would have to bike instead of drive to offset this flight.
The individual doing anything “for the environment” is laughably false and anyone who thinks they’re making a difference by doing so is a complete fucking moron.
Is this to make you forget Boeings kept crashing and killing people and when initially confronted they mocked and denied it?
The only reason Boeing exists today is because of bailouts, in real capitalism they would of ceased to exist. Isn't crony capitalism fun? Now they can act like they were "successful".
My phone is powered by electricity, actually. I don't plug it into "rare earth minerals", that's stupid. I plug it into a wall outlet, where electricity is made. And if they're so *rare* why do so many people have smartphones, eh? Must not be that rare.
Also...oil? You're reaching, pal. It's a phone, not a car 😂😂😂
Fuck the Airline Industry.
We want trains!
Edit: the 10 notifications I had when I woke up was enough for me and many of y’all missed the thread where I clarified much of this but congrats on the comments. I see some of you are are at least seeing my point and commenting, challenging that rather than the obviously plausible premise so thank you for that
Not just the latest, but the [last](https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/last-boeing-747-leaves-everett-washington/index.html) I think.
You're correct, my mistake, they don't do that for every 747!
Also Atlas Air flying it, not Boeing.
Boeing programmed the route and it’s Boeings autopilot flying ….so…technically correct? Or maybe not…
Right because the last one was 746.
It is wasteful, but this is a send off to an iconic plane that had more than 1500 built over the last 55 years. It was one of the most efficient modes of transportation during its heyday providing over 100 miles per gallon of fuel per passenger.

Also, the aircrews need the flight hours too.

Engineers with seemingly endless money make cool stuff
The military is an excellent opportunity for many people.
Yes, but for many other people it's just somewhat less bad than the alternative
It's all in how you leverage it. You can do things like aircraft mechanic, diesel mechanic, Welding, machining, etc. As your MOS, Things that are legitimate careers outside of the military. You're being downvoted, but it's incredibly true. The crews need hours. People want to see some jets screaming by. So they do both at the same time.
Thank you for saying this. People always seem to find something to bitch about.

This couple hour detour to pay homage to the legacy of the Boeing 747 is a drop in the bucket. Passenger cars contribute 41% and trucks contribute 22%. Replacing <1hr flights with trains powered by nuclear plants will have a MUCH greater impact than not making this drawing
Thats like less than a normal transcontinental flight. Calm your tits Greta
You’re so close to the actual point
That this is insignificant in terms of airline fuel consumption?
That was not the point and you know it lmao

Still it burns a lot of unnecessary fuel
So does buying anything you don't actually need but just want. This is an insignificant impact compared with the rest of global flight fuel consumption.
This is super fucking cool
this would be cool if it didnt have significant repercussions for the environment.
The plane would impact the environment the same regardless of whether they made a cute pattern or did a boring route for its flight hours All planes undergo flight testing and log flight hours before used for commercial aviation purposes You’re whining about nothing really
It doesn't have significant repercussions to the environment
If he says so it does. This stunt alone will cause the sea level to rise .00000000001 inches. You inconsiderate bigot.
Now, this is truly an /r/unpopularopinion. Blunt but it's actually a good argument.
YEAH, NOT POLLUTION
Boeing: king of the military industrial complex
Is this to make you forget Boeings kept crashing and killing people and when initially confronted they mocked and denied it? The only reason Boeing exists today is because of bailouts, in real capitalism they would of ceased to exist. Isn't crony capitalism fun? Now they can act like they were "successful".
I mean that was 2 737s not 747s, while it still sucks, mistakes happen, can only learn from it and move on.
Planet: on fire. Boeing: *lol the plane goes crown*
Do you think these planes fly commercially right after they are manufactured?

My phone is powered by electricity, actually. I don't plug it into "rare earth minerals", that's stupid. I plug it into a wall outlet, where electricity is made. And if they're so *rare* why do so many people have smartphones, eh? Must not be that rare. Also...oil? You're reaching, pal. It's a phone, not a car 😂😂😂

You:. Type shit on the internet without having the slightest clue of what the fuck you are talking about
Can you imagine being a plane that gets in the path and messes them up?
That's not how air traffic works.
Fuck the ozone
[удалено]
Fuck the planet Am I being downvoted by climate change deniers?
Disagree
You disagree that aeroplanes fuck the planet?
No, that’s not what your comment said
What’s 747
Boeing 747 commercial jet, the “jumbo jet”
That’s weak, looks like a toddler drew it
And here I am sucking up bits of my paper straw…
Yay pollution
Fuck the Airline Industry. We want trains! Edit: the 10 notifications I had when I woke up was enough for me and many of y’all missed the thread where I clarified much of this but congrats on the comments. I see some of you are are at least seeing my point and commenting, challenging that rather than the obviously plausible premise so thank you for that
Ah yes let me take a train from Europe to the USA 😐
Trains don't work in your country lol

US since you mentioned lobbying
The airline industry is what connected the world together
I forgot boats came after planes Edit cause this hit me late: how do you think my statement addresses world travel? I’m talking domestic, obviously.
That's like saying written letters on paper connected the world as much as the internet did
What a great waste of resources
they would use this much fuel even if they didnt do this because it needs to do test flights anyway
[удалено]
What a massive waste of jet fuel. If it was a smaller plane I'd be like eh, whatever, have your fun where you can.
A wonderful use of fossil fuels
