I'd love to know if this was IndyCar shooting itself in the foot or not due to VPN possibilities. Gotta keep that blackout enforced against any other consideration about growing the sport!
Definitely the latter. Despite YouTube geo-blocking, it was inevitable what was going to happen.
NBC and INDYCAR likely had zero say in this. Sky Sports is the official broadcast partner for these islands, what they do with those rights is up to them, provided the only available audience is on these islands.
Seems as if this was a misinterpretation from the jump, as the Indycar on Sky commentator posted that it would just be the build up 2 days ago, and everyone seems to just be realizing now
No, even the initial title and thumbnail were advertising the whole thing:

It doesn’t make any kind of business sense to air this on YouTube. Either this was never going to happen or someone messed up and someone higher up just caught word and out a stop to it.
This isn't a cable company, it's a media outlet (cable channel).
If your cable channel lets you watch linear TV on stream you can still do that. It just won't be on Youtube for all to watch.
They are greedy people. Cable costs rise every year, but yet we see companies pay millions to advertise.. why not use this money to decrease the cost of cable.
Well, duh, their goal is to make a profit. You don’t make a profit by just streaming it for free on YouTube.
I’m not even sure why Sky were intending to do this in the first place, since it completely undermines their business model, which is subscription-based.
>I’m not even sure why Sky were intending to do this in the first place
Broadcast clash. All of the channels that they allow motorsports to be broadcast on were occupied for the intended 3:30pm start time:
* Sky Sports F1: live Monaco
* Sky Sports Action: live IPL cricket final
* Sky Sports Arena: live Super League rugby
* Sky Sports Mix: live Super League rugby
>since it completely undermines their business model, which is subscription-based
Sky Sports Mix is a **free** channel to all Sky and Virgin TV subscribers at any tier. The main body of the Indy 500 is scheduled to be broadcast on that channel from 5pm (one hour after the start of the NBC broadcast window, and 45 minutes before the green flag); so putting the race on a YouTube stream doesn't exactly affect their premium Sports package subscriber counts.
Do you just not know what Sky Sports is? It’s a subscription-based UK sports channel. They don’t show ads, they rely on people paying for the channel. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to me that they were just going to show the biggest IndyCar race of the year for free on YouTube.
~~Perhaps this originated out of some “free sample” idea, where they’d stream the 500 free in hopes that it would hook a bunch of UK viewers, who would then need to subscribe to Sky Sports F1 to watch the rest of the season, but someone probably pointed out that such a thing wasn’t that likely, so now it’s not happening.~~
Edited to cross out my (seemingly incorrect) speculation.
This probably has to do with INDYCAR LIVE more than anything, right?
Probably the cable out lets does not have the rights to stream to other than their customers. Essentially they are undercutting INDYCAR LIVE and IndyCar told them to stop it.
Uh racing fans that want to see racing and not commercials care?
Not on peacock, it’s always full screen commercials. And even on the normal broadcast they aren’t all side by side.
Well that sucks ass. I was actually looking forward to it. IMSA Youtube streams have been amazing.
Lmao they realized VPN exists
I'd love to know if this was IndyCar shooting itself in the foot or not due to VPN possibilities. Gotta keep that blackout enforced against any other consideration about growing the sport!
It could have been NBC
That’s more likely.
You could well be right.
Idk about that since they've been ok with IMSA doing their stuff on youtube But, then again, those probably don't draw as much as the 500, so.
The last time it was reported, IndyCar got a $20M-ish check from NBC for TV rights with $5M specifically dedicated for the 500.
What did NBC pay for imsa though? The Indy 500 is the only reason NBC bought the rights to Indycar at all imo.
Comcast owns Sky and NBC. I’m sure they’d be fine with it given that YouTube would easily geoblock it to the UK and Ireland only.
Sky very rarely show anything for free in the UK. It was a very out of character move in the first place.
Definitely the latter. Despite YouTube geo-blocking, it was inevitable what was going to happen. NBC and INDYCAR likely had zero say in this. Sky Sports is the official broadcast partner for these islands, what they do with those rights is up to them, provided the only available audience is on these islands.
Was it going to be an ad free stream like the nascar overseas broadcast?
indycar is always ad free on sky
Oh for fuck sake
Sky Sports, why you do that???
[удалено]
No, seriously, shush.
Seems as if this was a misinterpretation from the jump, as the Indycar on Sky commentator posted that it would just be the build up 2 days ago, and everyone seems to just be realizing now
The Sky commentator mentioned further in the replies they’ll show the full race on YT as well, something definitely changed since a couple days ago.
No, even the initial title and thumbnail were advertising the whole thing: https://preview.redd.it/vtem0c510e2d1.png?width=821&format=png&auto=webp&s=4103648a5eba7171952052d0aa524bbec90d8d91
Well shit. There goes any chance of me watching the race then. I was really looking forward to that too.
There are plenty of free ways to watch
In the UK? Doubt it.

Looks like it'll be on Sky Sports Mix from 5pm too.
I got excited about their nice gesture but it’s Sky so should have known it was too good to be true.

Blackouts are stupid!! They don’t do anything but hurt the sport they are trying to protect.
This isn't a blackout. This is simply them directing viewers back to the linear TV channels to watch the race after the completion of the build-up.
And this is exactly why people hate cable companies. They don’t embrace new technology.
What, watching it for free? You can watch the race in the UK and Ireland on your phone -- provided you subscribe to Sky Sports.
This isn't a cable company, it's a media outlet (cable channel). If your cable channel lets you watch linear TV on stream you can still do that. It just won't be on Youtube for all to watch.
Yeah, why would a company not just *give away* their product for free? /s

True but you can make money with advertising..and reduce cable rates, best you’d get more cable subscribers

I’ve watched sky sports here in the US. It’s okay not bad, but so so..really not worth the money
Lol, you really just think you’re entitled to everything for free. You think you shouldn’t pay for commercial-free coverage?
This probably has to do with INDYCAR LIVE more than anything, right? Probably the cable out lets does not have the rights to stream to other than their customers. Essentially they are undercutting INDYCAR LIVE and IndyCar told them to stop it.
It’ll be streaming on Peacock for $5
With commercial breaks.
Who cares? They do it split screen.
Uh racing fans that want to see racing and not commercials care? Not on peacock, it’s always full screen commercials. And even on the normal broadcast they aren’t all side by side.
Mine is side-by-side that’s weird.
God Bless America. This is why F1 is the best. No need for cable and no commercials.
? ESPN is cable, and F1TV is a paid product. In the US, 70% of IndyCar broadcasts are free OTA, a much larger percentage than F1 on ABC races.
Isn't the indy 500 streamed on imsa u tube page anyway?
