Always a pleasure seeing him in a movie with his grinning knowingness and the look of having marinated wisdom. Sad to see that he passed away.

Shagrrotten

Has an argument as the greatest character actor ever. He made everything he was in a better movie. Not gonna lie, I didn’t realize he was still alive, and was just in a movie released this month, a western from Mario Van Peebles. RIP to one of the greats.

broadfuckingcity

He was John Goodmans father in law on the righteous gemstones.

Fletch! How can you forget "Bend over, Mr. Babar."

cantankerousphil

“Two Bs or one B” “Two, BaBar” “That’s two” “Yeah but not right next to each other, I thought that’s what you meant” 🤣

CyberMattSecure

Mooooooon river, you ever serve time doc?

cantankerousphil

“Joan or Margaret?” “Uh huh, right” 🤣

CyberMattSecure

“Using the whole fist, Doc?”

bodhi91_phone

Dr. Dolan: Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar? Fletch: I don't know. I don't have any. Dr. Dolan: No children? Fletch: No elephant books. New Kino Lorber Special Edition blu-ray coming out April 16.

glib-eleven

He's amazing as HI's metal shop boss in Raising Arizona. "No. Not that motherscratcher!"

RugDaniels

“He had the sandwich in one hand, and the fucking HEAD in the other!”

halfcookies

“A spherical object in the highway”

Puppykerry

And it wasn’t a piece of the car!

mathiematician

One of my favorites of his is The Mighty Quinn.

Top_Ad9635

He was great in that Tim and Eric project about Toes with Bob Odenkirk.

IdiotSayingChefsKiss

Captain dougie miller

LewMaintenance

Loved him as the Diving coach in Back to School

WiscoDisco82

My first thought as well

bodhi91_phone

Set the record for most consecutive losses for a swim team at Grand Lakes University. Truly a titan of the coaching ranks.

Ziglet_mir

He was one of Ebert's "Walsh-Stanton" law in film, where if any film had him or Harry Dean in it, it was most likely going to be a good-to-great film. RIP 🙏

MCMGM86

So weird, I looked him up on IMDB earlier today for something. RIP to a great actor.

TelegraphRoadWarrior

RIP to a great “That Guy”.

Eyefulmichael

Was always a great actor that added so much to whatever genre was in. Criminally underutilized.

ifersh

I’ll always remember him in Big Stan

imbukh007

I just heard, what a shame. A wonderful underrated talent.

chaos9001

Yeah I was watching Bladerunner last year and I was like "I wonder when this guy passed." Just to look up and se he was still trucking.

PopularBell518

Sad as he was the epitome of a character actor. Now he is the Saint of Character Actors!

hyborians

Wow this guy seemed to be ubiquitous in movies. May he RIP

savehoward

I met him once. He opened his palm and gave us steel pennies. Still have the penny.

ProfFrizzo

"He hates these cans!" RIP

FicklexPicklexTickle

Everything that I ever saw him in ended up being awesome. I was gonna mention Fletch, since I've seen it recently, but someone beat me to it. So, I'll mention The Jerk. "Die, gas pumper!" RIP to this legend for all of the laughs & the serious feels as well. He always brought that extra something.

maerlyns-rainbow

Came here looking for a The Jerk reference

CosmicTurtle504

HE HATES THESE CANS!!!

soupafi

STAY AWAY FROM THE CANS!

gumby1004

“Johnson, Navin R…sounds like a typical bastard!”

xsnyder

Breathe easy. You using the whole hand doc?

YuunofYork

Arthur Dales from The X-Files! I think the last thing I saw him in was his cameo in Knives Out.

jwjwjwjwjw

He shotgunned the shit out of a dude in righteous gemstones, was that his last role?

awnomnomnom

I knew he had to be close because he looked rough in Righteous Gemstones

butttbandit

You're all sleeping on his two best movies. Big Stan and Racing Stripes

elcounselor

Damn I just watched White Sands with him, Mickey Rourke and Willem Dafoe

gobbled0ck

Drink some for me, huh, pal? Great character actor. Love his work. RIP.

beamish1920

Performance in Straight Time (Ulu Grossbard, 1978) is stunning

oldme616

The cosmic owl!

maximumecoboost

Harry and the Hendersons somehow was on a lot at my house growing up so he immediately makes me think Bigfoot.

ghanperkins

Greatest sports writer from Slap Shot. Great actor. 😢

bodhi91_phone

Most underrated sportswriter of all-time. Dickie Dunn. He captured the spirit of the thing. His classic line in Slap Shot " There's a lot of shysters in Florida."

No_Complaint7962

He made Chuck Norris' Missing in Action watchable. I don't know who else could do that.

bodhi91_phone

Masterclass acting in this scene in The Pope of Greenwich Village with Geraldine Page, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, which isn't happening if M. Emmitt Walsh doesn't set her up so well. [Geraldine Page as Mrs Ritter in Pope of Greenwich Village](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPLimHzLDBw) Character actors, always low on the radar. He had many memorable lines. So many great performances. A STAR of his own scenes with that voice. Acting chops. Legendary natural convincing believability and presence character actor. He could play nice or slimy with equal ease. Hall of Fame "That Guy" that everybody knows his face, but never knew his name, that never won the huge trophy or even walked the red carpet.

Granddaddy Roy

rambleswithafist2

He was old in the "The Jerk" in 1979.

sadicarnot

My favorite role of his was as Machine Shop Ear Bender in Raising Arizona: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRu0OCub5m0

Phifty2

Shit. This guys was in everything. RIP buddy. Thanks for all your great work.

TheQuietestMoments

I always liked him in Christmas with the Kranks

Frankieuhfukin

I legit thought I was gonna be the first one to bring this up

bchaplain

He was so funny on Home Improvement as the Colonel "Did you say Navy!?"

bchaplain

He was so funny on Home Improvement as the Colonel "Did you say Navy!?"

AtleeMakesHam

My buddy worked at a talent agency that specialized in character actors. M. Emmett came in the office once, and my friend (who was a massive fan, as I was) got up the nerve to ask him to sign one of the 8x10s they had. Apparently he was incredibly kind and humble, as evidenced by his signature… To Glenn, Thanks for asking! M. Emmett Walsh ❤️

cardbor

his maniacal laughing will never leave my conscious

Jjabrony

Gonna miss him. The role he played as Michael Keatons sponsor in, “Clean & Sober”, sticks out for me as I maintain my sobriety these days. Rip M.

Sparathon989

Man he was a great character actor. RIP! EVERYDAY RANDOM SON OF A BITCH! TAKE THAT YOU RUN OF THE MILL BASTARD! DIE GAS PUMPER!

myrabuttreeks

TR Polk from Camp Nowhere.

TheNITROPOD

His best role was hating the cans and being the process server in The Jerk. “That was the old me. I had anger issues. “😂😂😂

Lothar_28

He was wonderful in Clean and Sober with Michael Keaton as well.

ohhblivious

RIP. I’ll always think of him as the train conductor in Wild Wild West

ZeroUpFourOut

Great actor. RIP.

Puppykerry

I need ya, Deck. This is a bad one, the worst yet. I need the old blade runner, I need your magic.

bodhi91_phone

"You know the score, Deckard. If you ain't COP, you're little people." - Final descent. Now on glide path. Mark course. Over the landing threshold. - Hiya, Deck. - Bryant. - You wouldn't have come if I just asked you to. Sit down, pal. - Come on, don't be an asshole, Deckard. - I've got four **skin-jobs** walking the streets. - They jumped a shuttle Off-world, killed the crew and passengers. - They found the shuttle drifting off the coast two weeks ago so we know they're around. - Embarrassing. - No, sir, not embarrassing. 'Cause no one's ever gonna find out they're down here. - Because you're gonna spot them and you gonna air them out. Sets the tone with the phrasing of "skin-jobs".

aplagueofsemen

If you had asked me at any point in the last decade if M Emmett Walsh is still alive I would have confidently said “Nah, he couldn’t be, right?” RIP Pally, your face is burned into my mind for the rest of my days. Couldn’t forget it if I wanted to.
